Early Ratings Analysis

The analysis below is based on the early household numbers and are NOT the same as the numbers that will be posted in the above table later. (See the About section below)

For more information on the Nielsen Ratings see this Wikipedia Entry.

NOTE: The opinions expressed here are NOT those of SpoilerTV but of the Author of this Article, Marc Berman.

-Ratings Breakdown:
Led by the season-premiere of “Dancing With the Stars,” it was an easy overnight victory for ABC on this final Monday of the 2012-13 season. Now airing just one night per week, “Dancing With the Stars” opened with a 10.8 rating/17 share in the overnight households from 8-10 p.m., peaking in the 9-10 p.m. hour with an 11.0/17. Comparably (and minus “The Voice” on NBC and original episodes of the CBS comedies in the competitive mix), this was a four percent increase from the year-ago season-opener (10.4/15 on 9/24/12). And that translated into 14.11 million viewers and a 2.5 rating/7 share among adults 18-49, based on the fast affiliate results.

As for the show itself, bravo to the faster pace, the interactive Facebook element and, of course, to the amazing Valerie Harper, who is an inspiration to us all. My pick for the first to bid adieu: Bill Engvall.

A repeat of “Castle” following the “Dancing With the Stars” season-premiere with a second-place 4.7/ 8 at 9 p.m.

In series-premiere news, Fox drama “Sleepy Hollow” was sampled with a second-place 6.1/ 9 in the overnights at 9 p.m. Comparably, that outdelivered the series-debut of failed year-ago occupant “The Mob Doctor” (3.7/ 5 on 9/17/12) by 65 percent. It built from the season-premiere of lead-in “Bones” (#2: 5.0/ 8 at 8 p.m.) by 22 percent. And it did not lose any steam at 9:30 p.m. Consider this a positive start for “Sleepy Hollow,” but don’t forget that the evening will be in all originals effective next week.

In season-finale news, CBS summer drama “Under the Dome” won the 10 p.m. hour with ease at a 7.4/13. Comparably, that was 80 percent above an encore of “The Big Bang Theory” at 9:30 p.m. (4.1/ 6). And it proves that original scripted dramas on the broadcast networks can indeed resonate in the summer.

Earlier in the evening on CBS were repeats of “How I Met Your Mother” (#3: 3.1/ 5) and two episodes of “2 Broke Girls” (8:30 p.m.: #3: 2.9/ 4; 9 p.m.: #3, 3.3/ 5) from 8:30-9:30 p.m.

In series finale news, summer flop “Siberia” on NBC exited with a mere (and series low) 1.1/ 2 at 10 p.m., which was 86 percent below the series-premiere of drama “Revolution” on the year-ago evening (7.9/13 on 9/12/12). “Siberia” dipped from lead-in “American Ninja Warrior” (#4: 2.6/ 4 at 9 p.m.) by 58 percent.

At 8 p.m. on NBC was the second Monday telecast of “The Million Second Quiz” at a fourth-place 2.7/ 4 in the overnights, which was 44 percent below its week-ago series-opener (4.8/ 8 on Sept. 9). Comparably, that 4.8 in the overnights translated into 6.52 million viewers and a 1.7/ 5 among adults 18-49, based on the fast affiliate data.

Also in season (or series) finale news was sophomore reality series “Breaking Point” on The CW at a miniscule 0.4/ 1 at 9 p.m., which was only equal to year-ago failed Canadian occupant “The L.A. Complex.” That said, there is no reason to believe there will be a third season. At 8 p.m. on The CW was an encore of “Hart of Dixie” at a last-place 0.5/ 1 at 8 p.m.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below)

  1. Crossing my fingers Sleepy Hollow does well next week. It's a good show so far.

  2. I hope the demos are still above 2.0 for Bones, considering the early rating is lower than last year's premiere.

  3. Ah, oh how i've missed the deluded rantings of the all self-important Marc Berman. It's good that TV season is back.

  5. Oh Berman, you biased troll, Sleepy Hollow did a 3.2 demo in the top 25 markets and you call it a ''Positive Sampling'' instead of a ''Winner''. Which it clearly is, but you probably didn't like it, so you won't.

  6. Under the Dome got a 7 week high for it's mediocre finale.

  8. Hi, does anyone else have problems with the table? I can't see it. :( I'm using Chrome and I tried to use Firefox but that didn't work. Any ideas what could be wrong? Thank you!

  9. Both Bones and Sleepy Hollow went up 0.1, meaning 3.5 to Sleepy Hollow and 2.3 to Bones (the same as the premieres of season 7 and season 8).
