  1. I really like Katie Cassidy.

Let's hope this season writers treat her better and thew new chick won't really steal her main story.

The amount of outright IGNORING both the press and the writers did towards her during comic con was outrageous. She is one of the leads, for gods sake...

  3. Cassidy does a good job with the material she's been given on this show. She takes on a whole lot of hate that should rightfully be directed at the writers, the producers, and their choices for her character.

  4. I don't think people hate Cassidy so much as the character. At least I don't. I've loved Cassidy in other things.

I'm kind of hoping she leaves the show and finds a better role somewhere else, because I have no faith in the writers to turn this character around.

  5. I can't mirror your lack of faith in the writers. Season one of Arrow was, to say the least, satisfying in most respects and I have no problem giving them the benefit of the doubt in regards to Laurel.

This show and this writing staff does not deserve the air KC breathes, considering how they keep treating her so far.

First they completely ignore her during Comic Con (which clearly irritated her).

Then the whole Black Canary stuff happens.
Then the freaking poster places her in freaking background to the point that you need magnifying glass to confirm her identity.

That's not the way to treat your lead heroine AND one of the most iconic DC Universe female characters.

Fan-pandering kills shows, that's a given rule of tv shows. But the amount of disrespect for the actress is staggering and infuriating.

  7. I won't deny that the show could utilize the character better than they have but promotion for the show is done by the network so I can't point the finger at Arrow for any of that.

  8. Yeah, agree to disagree. I think the writing is the weakest part of the show, especially for some of the female characters and love interests like Laurel. Thea isn't very good, Helena wasn't very good, McKenna wasn't very good. Laurel was the worst because she's the heroine of the show and gets the most focus. Her character is so bad I would never be able to take her seriously as Black Canary, a super bad ass super awesome vigilante.

Moira and Felicity were good mostly because they weren't solely or mainly love interests.

It's not Emily's/Felicity's/the writers fault that Felicity is a much better character than Laurel and that the character annoys people so much. The writers responded to what the audience liked and wanted, a.k.a Felicity Smoak. She earned it and with very little material she had to work with. That's remarkable. Unlike your insipid/empty "Laurel needs attention because she's the lead girl" argument.

What also kills adapted shows is silly determinisms like "she's a big character in the books so she should be popular on tv too". Get over it. The tv show isn't a copy or an homage to comics fans, things change and people will respond differently.

  11. My god could her extensions be any longer? lol Shake it off....anywaysss looking at her costume i'm thinking she'll be doing more kick ass scenes, well i hope so seeing as she will be Black Canary....i'm also wondering if they'll even bother to put in her "canary cry"?? Probably not. Sigh. Idc how corny it is, it's her signature, and i for one would like to see it. (Just as long as they don't copy Smallville's attempt at it).

  12. It's easy to blame the writing staff but frankly, I think it's her acting that makes her not be the lead female character anymore, and I think it's her acting that made the writers kept trying new things for Laurel last season hoping something would stick.
Emily, Willa, and especially Sussanna are much stronger actresses than Katie, and Caity Lotz is stronger too, I'm not certain they'll keep Katie around for much longer.

Its not exactly her signature as comics had both powered and powerless version of her. Her signature is, well, being strongest martial artist in dc universe and being able to out-think batman.

    1. Yes it is writers fault. KC is far better actress, she is just not getting a good material, while they went the easy route with Felicity by filling her character with one liners and not much else. Its not bad and it attracts nerd audience, but its not a long term solution and her character WILL get stale, as snarky one liner characters work better in small dosages.

    2. Fan Pandering never does any good. IF writers give in to fan demand and change story it always ends in trainwreck. Ask Supernatural. Ask Vampire Diaries.

    3. Defensive much? My post never ever brought up the geek girl, EVER.

Thank you InvestedInYourFuture! It's good to know that I'm not alone in my way of thinking about these dam shippers and fandoms! I told them the exact same thing, that their wants and desires ruin great shows. It's as simple as that and not really far from the truth.

Whoa there! I'm going to have to disagree with you on her being the best martial artist in the DC Universe InvestedInYourFuture. If memory serves me right, that title belongs to Lady Shiva, whom I wouldn't be surprised if she appears in Season 2 of Arrow or beyond. That lady could see what her opponent's moves were going to be before the opponents themselves even knew what they were going to do. She has even humiliated Killer Croc and survived an encounter with him using nothing but her body and no weapons.

You couldn't be more wrong. What kills adapted shows are silly shipping's of characters that make absolutely no sense to have them as a couple, and fans' reactions and demands dictating the course of the show itself, rather than the creative minds behind it.

    1. If she was the far better actress she would have made the character work better. I'm not trying to pit Katie and Emily. I like Katie's acting and I've seen how good she can be before, but Laurel is just plain boring, even when the writers gave the character good storylines to deal with. And Felicity only became a regular by the end of season 1, she used to be just a secondary character but then the audience liked her and actually became invested in a female character from this show. I'm sure Feicity will get better character development now that she's become a major player.

    2. There's a difference between fan pandering and going with what works within the show's dynamics AND the audience as well.

    3. Defensive? This is defensive (and bitter to be honest):
"Let's hope this season writers treat her better and thew new chick won't really steal her main story." You didn't mention Felicity directly, but we're grown ups here and reading between the lines in you comment wasn't that hard =).

LOL because you're the bearer of the almighty truth, right? Give me a break. As if you're not part of any fandoms since you're clearly picking sides here.

  20. I'll have to go with Ioncatrachopatroticocensurado (Jesus that's a long haha) on this one, I really don't believe she is THE strongest martial artists in the DC universe. I'd have to go with Lady Shiva as well. And FTR if they do the Powerless version of BC, i'll be a little disappointed. I wanna hear the cry!! I wanna hear that bird sing! lol

  21. I am anti-shipper and I am anti-fan pandering, but I am certainly not anti-fun characters. Laurel was written as a dud while Felicity was not. Therefore Felicity is the character more people wanted to see. I have no urge to see Felicity and Oliver together. I have no urge to see Oliver and Laurel together. I just want fun TV. Therefore I would love to have a lot more Felicity and I wouldn't care one jot if they killed off Laurel. In fact I say the sooner the better unless they do a major character overall. It wasn't just shippers that wanted more Felicity and less Laurel. And by the way, I do not agree with the argument that Katie Cassidy is the better actress as mentioned above. She can act better than she has on Arrow. That is for sure but she sure didn't make acting choices that made Laurel sympathetic or even interesting. Largely that is writing problem, but there is an acting component as well.

  22. #1. I agree.

#3. Unless she was talking about the new female character who will become the first Black Canary. That is who I automatically thought of, not Felicity.

  23. I agree that doing something on the TV show just because it happens in the comics is lame reasoning. This show is watched by people who both read the comics and do not. They need to be allowed room to breathe in their own worlds and the TV show is not the comics.

  24. Fan pandering does kill shows. It kills potential story lines and causes people to burn out on shows, both audience and those involved creatively. And yes, shippers are usually the worst of pandering - but not with Arrow. The insistence that adapted shows follow the dictates of worlds other people created can be just as bad. That is fan pandering too. The insistence that a show based on previous material stick with anything as complicated a set up as the comic world in which it was born limits the writers more than people begging for Oliver and Felicity on Tumblr could ever do. If something is not working then the producers/show runners of a TV show should have the option to change it (and Laurel is not working at all), but they can't because it would upset the comic fans. I guarantee there is more pandering to comic book fans on Arrow than there will ever be to shippers. Your argument works well for other shows but in Arrow's case, you have to look hard at comic fan pandering if you are going to condemn shippers.

  25. I do think the writer staff shares the lion's burden, but I agree that Cassidy has done Laurel no favors with her acting choices either. She generally comes off as the self-righteous martyr or the whiny hypocrite. She could temper some of these poorly written lines by softening the character some, making small adjustments to score more sympathy, so Laurel comes off as sympathetic instead of irritating. Sadly, pandering to comic book fans means that Laurel can never leave the show. They will have to do a massive character overhaul to make her palatable enough to stick with the show for several years. Honestly I could see her becoming so unlikable that she could drive viewers away if they don't fix her now.

  26. I had never seen Katie Cassidy in anything before this, didn't even know she was part of the Jack Cassidy clan, and so I came to Arrow entirely unspoiled about her.

For me, the defining moment is in Salvation when she is saying goodbye to her mother, who is leaving again. I can see so many expressions on Alex Kingston's face, regret, love, hopelessness. Then the camera cuts to Katie Cassidy and I see ....nothing. Just blankness. Later she goes to the club and runs into Oliver, and what could have been a scene of emotion and regrets fizzles because again, I get nothing from her.

There's been a lot written for Laurel -- her reactions to Oliver's return and knowing he was sleeping with her sister, her relationship with her father, her relationship with Tommy, the arc where her mother came back with the hope that Sara was still alive, her professional life, her relationship mentoring Thea -- these are more storylines than Moira or Thea or Tommy got and way more than Diggle did.

I think the material was good enough. Hey, no one gets that great a material on this show, they all have to work with what they've got. The problem is that Katie Cassidy is not that good of an actress except in certain settings. That's why the scenes when she's fighting her father have life which the ones where she's being a lawyer or with Oliver don't.

They could write more for Laurel, make her the co-star and major love interest of the hero. The problem is that I don't think it's going to do the show any favors. Every time I heard what a wonderful lawyer Laurel is, I roll my eyes because she's not showing me that. They could write Shakespeare-level material for her but she couldn't do it and the show would suffer.

In my opinion, since she's now locked in as Laurel, they should figure out what she does best and write those scenes for her. And leave the rest to Team Arrow.
