Showtime - Penny Dreadful and The Affair cast Eva Green and Ruth Wilson, Californication delayed

Season 3 of Episodes (9 episodes) will premiere on Sunday, 12th January, 2014 at 10:30pm on Showtime, after Shameless season 4 (12 episodes) and House of Lies season 3 (12 episodes).

That means the very funny Matt LeBlanc-starrer is taking Californication's spot, which in turn will air its seventh season (12 episodes) alongside Nurse Jackie's sixth season (10 episodes) in the Spring of 2014.

Both of these dramedies will be paired with Showtime's new scary psychological thriller/horror series, Penny Dreadful (8 episodes), from Sam Mendes & John Logan (Skyfall), starring Eva Green and Josh Hartnett.

If it does start in April, Penny Dreadful would therefore be taking the spot of the recently cancelled Borgias. There was a protest about that at the TCA today, btw, which consisted in a plane flying over the convention center (taking place indoors) and a couple of protestors outside — Showtime boss David Nevins said he asked a "fan" what he thought of the season three finale / series finale, and that guy had not seen it, he was a paid protestor.

Not only that, but The Affair has cast its female lead : Ruth Wilson (Luther) is joining Dominic West (The Wire). In this drama from In Treatment producers Sarah Treem & Hagai Levi, she will play the role of a married woman, mother of four and married to Noah (West), who tries to get her life back together after a tragedy.

Besides The Affair, other pilots in contention for pickup include the Ridley Scott-helmed drama Vatican starring Kyle Chandler and comedy Trending Down starring Philip Seymour Hoffman.

  1. Why would they mess with what works? The 2 hour block of Shameless, House of Lies and Californication was one of the best 2 hour blocks on all of cable if not the best.

  2. Because Episodes got a Emmy-nods because Matt LeBlanc is awful. I dont like what they are doing with Californication myself. And Cali season 7 is also finished shooting, so why keep the show locked up for so long? Smell like a last season to me.

  3. All 3 shows had their highest viewership yet why screw with that? Why couldn't Episodes air this past spring in between Nurse Jackie and The Borgias? There was an open timeslot between them. With the season 6 cliffhanger I could see next season being the final season though. If that's the case it looks like I'm gonna lose 3 of my favorite shows next year. Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Californication.

  4. I'm always up for more Eva Green on my television but why Josh Hartnett? I'm sure there were better options out there.

  5. Haha. Dont be so harsh on Hartnett. He couldn't even come back to the sequel to Sin City.
