Yeah I like that idea too, but I'm guessing like you that it's a tad too soon. That could be cool to see in a later season though. They still have lots of material with the will Stan catch them, won't he, the kids getting suspicious, etc. But it definitely looks like they at least almost get caught here, which could be very intense. Hopefully this episode ends on a better note... last night felt so dark it was hard to imagine anyone ever being happy again.
Watching this again, I'm wondering if where Philip says, "There's one more choice that we have," could be him bringing up the option of defection again.
Yes, I'm certain that is a possibility here. Them suggesting moving the kids to Canada is big thing, an option they haven't suggest even when Stan moved in across the street.
Dark? I didn't feel it was that dark, more hopeful than other recent episodes to be honest. There are no more distractions between them, except Martha who becomes seemingly more blind as time goes on.
I feel the same way. I thought the episode last night was so well done, but then it was very depressing to see P/E still so sad and not willing/able to tell each other they have feelings. I really hope we get something positive too. A total reconciliation and everything is perfect wouldn't be realistic, but I hope they at least make up a little and are moving in a more positive direction. The separation storyline was effective while it lasted, but IMHO it's gone on long enough and is now just sad to watch.
I wondered about Grannie too after the promo. That would be interesting if after everything bad she's done (in the name of what's right for Russia, of course), she ended up being the one to save P/E when the op goes bad. But then I hope it isn't because I think she's a great character.
Hmm... how can I describe why I saw it as dark... you're right that the distractions are gone (which is a positive), and I like that they're clearly both having feelings for one another, just afraid to show it. I guess it was just hard to watch the whole story line with Martha being completely duped, and eventually to have some horrible end, then to see Elizabeth so sad missing Philip, wanting what they never had, and having to stand there at his wedding while he made vows to another woman, then Philip having to deal with his own grief over the loss of the P/E relationship and having to seduce and lie to Martha. You could tell it was really hard for him too. Don't get me wrong... it was really a well done episode... just very dark too, with all the characters either hurting terribly, or not aware that they soon would be just beyond the horizon. Does that make sense?
I don't think she would either (and it looks like they go through with the op anyway), but I could see that as being a cool focus of the story arc for the second season and maybe they're trying to set that up. Plus, it only makes sense if they really think they might be killed or captured doing this, that Philip would suggest they run rather than one runs with the the kids and the other stays behind to do the mission.
Wait, who is Granny talking to? I thought it was Beeman??? Can't be... She saw a signal for/of what? That the colonel is a spy? Also, Nina's been feeding false intel to the FBI, right? That would affect what's happening
That was Philip (in disguise) she was talking to. To me, it looks like Philip is the one who ends up going through with the meeting, and then maybe after, she sees a signal that the FBI is about to move in and capture Philip so she warns him and then Philip and Elizabeth run and steal the car? They would have guys dressed casually in the park observing the meet.
My guess is that because they have Prince (Elizabeth's gambler contact) in custody, he spills the beans to the FBI to save his own butt. That's the simplest method of it getting out. Or there could be something convoluted with Nina or Martha, but seems like the easiest method is Prince talks to get out of trouble and demands immunity.
True enough. But would Elizabeth leave the mission so easily? She's always been the mission comes first no matter what, though these past few episodes she has been disobeying orders. I could see, under the right circumstances in the finale, why she would choose to abandon her mission in favor of running.
Ah, I understand now. In that regard, yes, it was dark. These characters are suffering a lot or will suffer in the future. I love how this show doesn't glorify being a spy, it's hard work and emotionally damaging.
I hope they can one day retire together, but I don't think that is going to happen. On watching the last episode again I realized that they might not ever be just happily together. There will always be another mission and being a spy, as long as the cold war rages on.
I think Prince may owe his wife a lot of money (if he hasn't been paying for awhile), and once they start checking into him (because he works for such a high security level program), he gets nervous and admits everything. That would explain how they seem to know about the meet.
I would say there's still hope. After all, we all know the cold war is going to end, and even though Elizabeth is so hard lined now, maybe she softens over time and starts to see her kids' future as something more critical to consider. I don't think they could ever just retire though... I think they'd either have to leave the KGB or defect, or just run.
Oh, I don't think Elizabeth would ever say yes. Not at this point. But we know from the pilot that Philip is already ready to defect. So I think he would have no problem about suggesting the obvious solution--they leave the KGB behind and just escape, all four of them together. And it might set up the second season where maybe the push is more their ideological differences rather than outsiders like Irina and Gregory causing problems.
This looks awesome. Love the idea they might get almost caught at the meet and get chased by Stan and the FBI. Looked like they were stealing and hot-wiring a car, which could be an awesome way to finish the season (especially with some sort of slightly happier ending for P/E, cough...)
Looks like season 2 might be them on the run? I kinda like that idea, but it might be a tad to soon. Though it's also entirely possible that the promo is misleading. Again. ;)
Can't wait, not sure how it will end this season I hope we get something positive with the Elizabeth/Phillip relationship. If anyone dies I think it might be Granny though I do love that mean SOB.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

I can't believe this is the last episode of the season. I'm already dreading the cliffhangers! One of the best new shows this season.

Wholeheartedly agree with you there! :)
ReplyDeleteBut he was only picked up for not paying maintenance allowance right? How would they go from that to working with the KGB?

ReplyDeletethanks.
ReplyDeleteSometimes with the wigs I hardly recognize them!
I think watching them in a car chase or a getaway could be very cool. Usually we don't get anything quite that action packed!
