  1. Mixed feelings on this one... I thought the Nina stuff was really well done. Usually I'm only lukewarm about her character and in this one she really shined. IMHO, there was a whole lotta Martha and she was so dimwitted this time around I groaned. Loved all the emotion between P/E, but then it was hard watching "Clark" marry Martha in front of Elizabeth too, and I have to admit it was a little annoying that they brought back the flip flopping where in one scene Elizabeth pretends not to care while Philip does, then Philip doesn't care while Elizabeth does. I swear, they need the sense slapped into them.

  2. The scene with Paige and Elizabeth was very telling. Elizabeth says "feelings come and go," but Paige counters with "I don't want to fight for his feelings, either he's into me or not." I think that pretty much sums up Phillip's attitude at this point - either Elizabeth loves him or she doesn't. I feel like he's realized that he can't make her love him and that she needs to make up her mind. There has never been a question about his feelings.

  3. Oh don't get me wrong, I LOVED that there was so much emotion--you could see it in both of their eyes that they love each other, that they want it to work, that there are finally deep feelings there... but it was also a bit of a letdown because even though it was so clearly there, it kept getting deliberately skirted every time. It's not a matter of questioning whether it's there--it was, and marvelously acted by MR and KR--just that now I'm wondering if the show intends to torture us indefinitely and have them keep going back and forth and play "not it" on who has to say they like each other first. That has built great drama and IF they give us a little hint of resolution (I still have my fingers crossed for next week), would be worth the build up. But if they keep doing the flip flopping thing indefinitely, I think it will get a little frustrating because it never goes anywhere.

  4. I loved the scene with Paige and Elizabeth and I think that was one of my favorite Elizabeth moments that we've seen to date. I think you're exactly right that Paige provides a bit of insight into how her father is defeated and giving up a little bit unless and until there's some indication that Elizabeth feels something too. There was also a similar connection when "Clark" described his "ex" wife to Martha... I thought there was some truth in what he was saying about why the marriage hadn't worked.

I guess after last week where a step forward was taken, I was hopeful we would move away from the misconstrued signals and back and forth. Maybe they're saving it all for the finale, which would make it worth it, but I'm losing faith just a little. I thought it was wonderful seeing Elizabeth develop those strong feelings, great to watch her character going through that emotionally, but if it's just shown to the viewers and then they keep shrugging and walking away from each other... I dunno, that's okay to watch for awhile, but it gets frustrating after too many episodes too. Does that make any sense?

  5. But will she ever show that, or will he have three wives on the side and a permanently broken heart before she finally admits it? :(

  6. I don't think it will take that long, she tried acting on it in last weeks episode. But went about it all wrong, which she realized when Philip didn't pick up on it (or choose to ignore it). It's hard for her to show her feelings, something that she has been scared of most of her life. Give her some time to figure it out, though the events in the finale may either postpone or accelerate it.

  7. Well I suppose that is fair. We don't know what the intentions of the writers are. Though they seem aware that there are a great deal of people out there who like the Elizabeth/Philip romance. But there are also a bunch of people that enjoy the angsty separation they are going through.

Their relationship is such an integral part of the show, that I have a hard time imagining that they will keep them apart for much longer.

The fact that a separation story between the two lead characters could even work, and is resonating, in a show's first season is a testament to how well the show and it's characters are written. Also, just look how fanatical people here are about it. ;)

I have hopes we'll see them in a more positive light next week, with the big events either being the catalyst for that or something that happens after they show us hope of them getting together again. I hope it is the former, but the latter is entirely possible as well.

It's hard to imagine that the main relationship on the show won't get some spotlight on next weeks finale. :)

  8. The wigs totally made me laugh too! But then you're right the wedding was sad on so many levels. I think I hurt for every person there except for Grannie, who's a tough old bird. Everyone there was either hurting because they didn't have the person they wanted, or they were being lied to (Martha and her parents) and would soon experience a horrible end.

  9. I hope you're right. I have enjoyed how thoroughly they've explored the separation and problems between P/E, but ultimately their relationship is so integral to the story that I miss it when they're just platonic spy partners, which, despite all the longing looks, they've basically been for 5 episodes now. I'm hoping they will have a moment in the finale, but since they've stretched it out this long, I'm a little discouraged too, and wonder if they just intend let things stay bad for a very long time.

  10. See, I like the angsty separation as long as it leads up to the reward of a nice reconciliation, whatever that looks like, considering what a mess they've made of their relationship. The lows make the highs all the better, you know? I just think we've been in a low for so many episodes now, it makes it depressing to get through the week's installment and have them still not any better.

And since it's THE main relationship on the show... I dunno... it just feels different from other shows where I could take it or leave it. They really hooked us into caring in the pilot, and I've been rooting for them to find a little piece of happiness ever since. Watching "Clark" marry Martha, ugh.

  11. Oh, I understand completely. I think the reason why it feels like they have been stuck in the same place forever is that the ball is now firmly in Elizabeth's court. Phillip is done getting hurt, always being the one to reach out and smooth things over. I'm even starting to feel like he's slowly giving up. And Elizabeth having all these epiphanies, yet not acting on them is really frustrating to see. Sigh.

  12. I think that's part of the problem, actually. She didn't have trouble expressing feelings for Gregory and Zhukov. It would be understandable if Phillip felt like she didn't really care for him all that much.

  13. Yes, I agree. I think Philip accepted less from Elizabeth before--allowed some of her bumbling attempts to be enough--but after seeing how she could be expressive and passionate freely saying how much Zhukov and Gregory meant to her, it would've put into a new light that she never acted that way about him. I think it wasn't so much that he didn't pick up on what she wanted, but that he's no longer going to respond to anything less than her making a genuine overture like she did to the two previous men. And that's honestly a pretty smart move on his part.

  14. Yes, I agree with you on the slowly giving up. That's the same thing I've been seeing in his face the past few episodes. And while I like seeing Elizabeth experiencing all these things, watching her admit them to Paige, admit them to herself, and do everything except admit them to Philip or act on them makes it drag out a bit. If they finally go there next week, I'm fine with it. This show is just so new, there's no way to know if they plan to drag things out.

  15. I wonder if Clark's relationship with Martha has something to do it. Does Phillip look at her and see himself? In a way, he was in a similar position as Martha in regards to his relationship with Elizabeth. Deluding himself, always being the one to compromise, always trying to win her affections. Realizing that would hurt.

I think there will be some kind of "payoff" in the season finale. Might not necessarily be a reconciliation. Then again, as you said, we have no way of knowing.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Didn't she? I never heard her say directly to them how much she loved/liked them. Yes she was with Gregory the last time, but how much of that was that being his last night alive and perhaps persuading him to go to Moscow. Since she was packing his bags the next morning even after he said he wouldn't go. :)

  17. I can see why it would discourage you because they've been separated longer than they've been together, in terms of what we've been shown on the show. I think we get more glimmers of hope on the finale, before the proverbial shit hits the fan.

It's hard to speculate on what will happen next since the finale seems to some major things going down. But I doubt they will keep them separated for much longer, I think the writers know what a chemistry these two have on screen together and we will seem them back together next season. :)

That is still too far away for my liking, but unfortunately I don't run the show. ;)

  18. Yeah I agree here, Philip seems really tormented stringing Martha along. Knowing all the way how much it will hurt eventually when the truth is revealed.

As for Elizabeth the balls indeed in her court now, I think she is still figuring out how to reach out to Philip. And based on the finale she might not get her chance or be forced to take it before it's too late.

That sounded way more depressing than I meant it. :)

  19. Yeah, that scene was fun and sad to watch at the same time. Claudia in a wig was funny and the scene between Philip and Elizabeth talking about marriage saved. I almost wanted to say ''kiss and make up already'' but I realized that might have looked awkward with Martha in the background. ;)

Here's crossing our fingers we get a little more in the finale this week. :)

  20. Sounding harsh here, but at this point isn't it better to just kill Martha when she's fulfilled her purpose? That way she can die happy, not knowing how she has been lied too and manipulated into helping the enemy.

Otherwise, when she finds out, I fear she will commit suicide. :(

  21. Yes, I thought at first she was playing the FBI all along (as I mentioned in my review), but that wasn't the case.

Obiously, though, she sees right through Stan's lies and now will turn the tables on him. However, it might not be as good for her life expectancy.

  22. Alas. I was hopeful, but after reading the preview, it sounds like there are simply more missed signals and signs they care but no one will act on it, which is sad to hear. I don't need them to make it perfect, but it's sad to think we have to wait until January and they won't even throw us a bone.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes. I think the finale could be very good in terms of raising the stakes. I wish it would mean them getting into more of their issues, but they may also choose to just put it off to the second season.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah... I guess I was hoping that in the way they started the season by them coming together romantically for the first time, they would move apart in the middle and find their way back to each other in a stronger way to close off the first season. It just seemed like it would make a nice way to bookend it, especially if Elizabeth was able to reach out to Philip a little, the way he has her all along.

I don't want things to be rosy for them too quickly, and would like to see them continue to struggle next season, but then after all the missed moments and can't quite say what they mean times in the second half of this season, it would make it worth it if they could finally show a little of that in the finale. If they just put it off again, it would be a huge let down.

  25. I don't think we've heard Elizabeth say she loves anyone on screen except for Paige. But she definitely showed that she cared passionately for Gregory and Zhukov by her reactions. That had to really hurt Philip to see her getting so worked up when she's always been kind of take it or leave it with him.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm not sure what they will do with Martha (and it seems I always guess wrong about everything else!) but I can see why they might want to keep her alive to keep the possibility of getting information from the FBI. Of course, I think they would not hesitate to kill her if it was a threat to them.

  27. That marriage scene oh god both hilarious because of the wigs and just the idea of Granny being a nice mom and Elizabeth a sister to Phillip is funny but oh god sad I feel really bad for Martha and for Elizabeth and well for everyone really.

I am so happy Nina is taking control and is going to turn on Stan, it makes sense to me and has been building for the last couple of weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Agreed and I think last weeks episode provided a breaking and turning point for Elizabeth. Having lost two people she loves in short sucsession, Gregory and Zhukov, she broke down after kidnapping Patterson. And she slowly and surely is realizing she loves Philip and doesn't want to lose him too.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Look in Elizabeth's (and Philips' for that matters) eyes, she cares all the way. More than before in any case, she seems sure of it now. Hell, she was even thinking about marriage with him!

As for Martha, love makes blind, she is so head over heels for Clark.. it's actually sad that such a sweet, albeit naive, person will eventually be dealing with the fact that Clark isn't real. It will hurt, a lot.

And Nina, guess my crazy theory was wrong. But it looks like Arkady may give her the chance to redeem herself. Wouldn't surprise me if he deported her to Russia after she served her purpose though.
