Tuesday 3/05/13
Household
Rating/Share
CBS 9.7/15
Fox 7.9/12
ABC 3.4/ 5
NBC 2.3/ 4
CW 0.9/ 1
----------
-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Tuesday 3/07/12:
Fox: +147, CBS: +33, ABC: + 3, CW: -10, NBC: -32
----------
-Winners:
“NCIS” (CBS), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (CBS)
-Fading Fast:
“American Idol” (Fox)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Celebrity Wife Swap” (ABC), “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers” (NBC), “Hart of Dixie” (CW), “The Taste” (ABC), “Go On” (NBC), “The New Normal” (NBC), “Smash” (NBC)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown:
Once upon a time the competition could not touch the steamroller named “American Idol.” But two-hours of the sinking singing competition dipped to a 7.9 rating/12 share in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., which trailed competing “NCIS” (12.9 rating/20 share -- #1 for the night) and “NCIS: Los Angeles” (#1: 10.0/16) on CBS by an average of 31 percent. “Idol,” of course, will still win the block in adults 18-49 (and other young demos). And “Idol” did hold a significant advantage over year-ago Tuesday night sitcoms “Raising Hope,” “I Hate My Teenage Daughter,” “New Girl” and “Breaking In.” But 12 seasons into its run, Fox needs to start planning for a future without “American Idol.”
In week two news, new CBS crime solver “Golden Boy” won the 10 p.m. hour with a 6.2/11 in the overnights. Comparably, however, that was 10 percent below last Tuesday’s preview (6.9/12 on Feb. 26), which translated into 10.56 million viewers and a 1.8 rating/5 share among adults 18-49 (based on the Live Plus Same Day data). The overnight retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “NCIS: Los Angeles” (9.8/15) was only 63 percent. And moving into its regularly scheduled Friday 9 p.m. time period (out of “Undercover Boss” and into “Blue Bloods”) this week is unlikely to bode well. Word of advice: Do not get too used to “Golden Boy.”
On ABC, week two of the return of “Celebrity Wife Swap” tumbled to a distant third-place 3.5/ 5 at 8 p.m. And that, comparably, was 34 percent below last week’s season-opener (5.3/ 8 on Feb. 26), and 21 percent below failed year-ago drama “The River” (4.3/ 7 on 3/06/12). Minus the lead-in support, cooking/competition “The Taste” was not so tasty as a series-low 2.4/ 4 at 9 p.m. With less competition, older skewing crime solver “Body of Proof” perked up to a second-place 4.6/ 8 at 10 p.m., which was double the 9:30 p.m. portion of “The Taste.”
Elsewhere, NBC could not compete with its combination of a two episodes (repeat and original) of “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers” (8 p.m.: #4, 2.4/ 4; 8:30 p.m.: #4: 2.3/ 4), “Go On” (#4: 2.3/ 4), “The New Normal” (#4: 1.9/ 3) and “Smash” (#3, 2.5/ 4), which might gain some of its lost audience if NBC flipped its time period with current Monday 10 p.m. clinker “Deception.” The next time someone tells you that lead-in does not matter, remind them of what happened to “Go On” and “The New Normal” after “The Voice” took a break.
As for The CW, on the fence “Hart of Dixie” (which would never have seen a second season if the network had more hit shows) opened with a typically lackluster 1.3/ 2 (#5) at 8 p.m. And it led into a repeat of “Beauty and the Beast” at a 0.6/ 1 at 9 p.m.

“Hart of Dixie” (which would never have seen a second season if the network had more hit shows)" You can say it for Gossip Girl, Nikita and 90210 too.
ReplyDeleteMarc Berman, you should categorize Golden Boy or Body of Proof in the loser category.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure CW would love to have more hit shows but the reality is they dont so they get stuck with poorly rated ones not good for them but good for the fans of those shows who more often than not can pretty much guarentee a long and happy viewing exsistance. HOD has shit ratings but ratings are relative and on the CW and its lack of hit shows that means that HOD is a show that will get 4 seasons for syndication. Idealy the CW would like to pick up around 5 new shows for the next season and have them all be hits so they can really clean house of the low rated shows. The reality is usually very different.
ReplyDelete"But 12 seasons into its run, Fox needs to start planning for a future without 'American Idol.'
ReplyDeleteMaybe if the rivals were stronger. Look at ABC and NBC. They are far away from beating Fox on tuesday.
Golden Boy is quite good. It deserves some patience.
ReplyDeleteif it holds around the number it premier with when it moves to Friday it may be renewed, but if it slips its a gonner. Either way it wont affect the fate of CSI:NY that it dead anyway.
ReplyDeleteSo many dead shows walking on Tuesdays
ReplyDeleteAre you sure AI had a 2.4 rating in 18-49? Seems incredibly low for 11.50 million viewers
ReplyDeleteSomeone also has an issue with Hart Of Dixie. Which arguably, when you look at the data the CW likes to spin, it's their 4th highest rated show. get over yourself you bitchy little fool.
ReplyDelete3.4 . Was a case of fat finges. Should be fixed now.
ReplyDeleteCBS Tuesday line up next season-
ReplyDeleteNCIS
NCIS:LA
NCIS:RED
though I would flip LA and RED around to give RED the bigger lead in and well we all know LA will do just fine at 10.
So smash is certain to be yanked, right?
ReplyDeleteNikita was a hit show until it was moved to Friday. Next year, the CW should move it to Wednesday and pair it up with Arrow. These two shows are very much alike. In the Netherlands, Arrow airs after Nikita on a Sunday night and it appears to be a very good combination, attracting lots of viewers and scoring well in the age group 18-50.
ReplyDeletethanks, but still thats very low for American Idol, Tuesdays seem to be an awful night for TV in terms of ratings (excluding NCIS and NCIS: LA in some ways)
ReplyDeletefourth highest show right now???
ReplyDeleteIt's certainly in trouble. When the final adjusted numbers come out later tonight we'll update the Cancellation Chart here
ReplyDeletehttp://www.spoilertv.com/2012/09/the-spoilertv-cancellation-predictor.html
Right. To say that 0.7 is terrible is an understatement.
ReplyDeleteMarc Berman is biased against certain shows.
ReplyDeletePossibly, it's already pretty much dead at this point.
ReplyDeleteI see NCIS, Red and then CSI - it makes sense to bookend a new show with existing shows. NCIS: LA moves to Wed 9//8 and CM slides back to 10. That would certainly be a solid Tuesday/Wed line-up for CBS. No way that all three NCIS' air on same night. LA is ready for another night.
ReplyDelete"Which arguably" <_Something I'm not entirely in the mood to explain the meaning of at the moment, but yes. When you factor women 18-34, and Live + 7 HoD is currently beating every show not already renewed on the CW.
ReplyDeleteI think Go On will get renewed, along with Parks and Rec. But The New Normal is pretty much dead...
ReplyDeleteHappy for BOP, I mean I watch it because their is nothing else that captures my attention in that time slot. Smash really NBC, you should have cancelled it last year. What a waste of so much money.
ReplyDeleteif Zero Hour got cancelled @ 1 rating, I would imagine Smash is for sure in the red zone. I am wondering if NBC will just air the remaining episodes, but they won't renew it.
ReplyDeleteGod I hope Golden Boy gets cancelled.
ReplyDeleteI think so, I think the entire season will be shown but I imagine even for the struggling NBC it makes no sense to renew it, it looks like it could be an expensive show to produce.
ReplyDeletewhy would you hope for that?
ReplyDeleteI agree that Smash will most likely be cancelled. But your talking about 2 different networks. Its like comparing apples and oranges. At one point NBC might of been happy with oranges whereas as now they might want apples...
ReplyDeleteIf Golden Boy gets cancelled, which I'm pretty sure it will, The Mentalist has better chances at being renewed for a 6th season.
