Metered Market Wednesday Ratings
Fox Wins, but “American Idol” Sinks to a Season Low

Wednesday 3/27/13
Metered Market Results

Household
Rating/Share
Fox 8.3/13
ABC 4.6/ 8
CBS 4.6/ 8
NBC 3.9/ 6
CW 1.8/ 3

----------

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Wednesday 3/29/12:
NBC: +56, ABC: +44, CW: +38, CBS: -15, Fox: -30

----------

-Winners:
“American Idol” (Fox), “Survivor: Caramoan” (CBS), “Arrow” (CW), “Modern Family” (ABC), “Chicago Fire” (NBC)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Whitney” (NBC), “Suburgatory” (ABC), “Nashville” (ABC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Two-hours of “American Idol” on Fox topped this final Wednesday in March, with an 8.3 rating/13 share in the overnights. But, comparably, this was a season low with erosion from the year-ago telecast (11.8/19 on 3/29/12) of 30 percent. Yes, that is significant.

CBS, which tied ABC for second overall because it aired repeats of “Criminal Minds” and “CSI,” opened the evening with “Survivor: Caramoan” at a second-place 6.2/10 at 8 p.m. Unlike “American Idol,” which has sprung a major leak, year-to-year erosion for “Survivor” was only five percent (versus a 6.5/11 on 3/29/12). Too bad this is such a weak season creatively, through. The aforementioned encores of “Criminal Minds” (#4: 3.4/ 6) and “CSI” (#2: 4.3/ 8) followed from 9-11 p.m.

Two on the fence sitcoms ended their seasons (or series runs) last night. Freshman “The Neighbors” on ABC finished third at 8:30 p.m. with a 3.9/ 6 and retention out of lead-in “The Middle” (#3: 5.1/ 9 at 8 p.m.) of 76 percent. Chances of “The Neighbors” returning next season: 50-50 at best.

Competing sophomore “Whitney” on NBC, meanwhile, aired two original episodes (including the season, or series, finale at 8:30 p.m.). Both half-hours finished a distant fourth with a 2.4/ 4 at 8 p.m. and a 2.2/ 4 at 8:30 p.m. Chances of “Whitney” returning next season: nil. NBC should not have renewed this ratings and laugh-challenged series for a second season to begin with.

Also on ABC was beloved “Modern Family” at a second-place 6.8/11 at 9 p.m., followed by sophomore “Suburgatory” (#3: 3.9/ 6) and freshman drama “Nashville” (#3: 3.9/ 7) from 9:30-11 p.m. With retention of only 57 percent for “Suburgatory” out of “Modern Family,” ABC would be wise to cut its losses and issue a pink slip. As for “Nashville,” nice try, but the ratings do not warrant a second season.

Also on NBC was “Law & Order: SVU” at a third-place 4.7/ 8 at 9 p.m., followed by compatible “Chicago Fire” at a dominant 4.8/ 8 at 10 p.m. Comparably, “Chicago Fire” built from year-ago occupant “Rock Center with Brian Williams” (2.6/ 5 on 3/28/12) by 81 percent. And both “Law & Order: SVU” and “Chicago Fire” rose to their best overnights since February 13.

The CW capped off the evening with reliable “Arrow” (#5: 2.1/ 3), which built from the year-ago telecast of “One Tree Hill” (1.2/ 2 on 3/28/12) by 75 percent, and veteran “Supernatural,” with a 1.5/ 2 (#5) at 9 p.m.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) we post the TV Ratings for the previous night.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above.

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. 1. Nashville suffers because it's on during ABC's comedy day. I hope The Neighbors get renewed because it proved to be a great show, same with Nashville

  2. I wanna die now. #Nashville

  3. go chicago fire :) So happy for that show. Now they just need to do better stories with Shay and the show could have all my undying love.

  4. Nashville's not going anywhere. Marc Berman is so out of touch with the TV industry, it hurts.

    ReplyDelete
  5. He's also been a Nashville hater since day 1

  6. WoHo SVU! Bring on season 15 NBC!!!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Are the Supernatural/Arrow ratings mixed up or did Supernatural actually get higher ratings this week?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Not mixed. Supernatural had the better 18-49

    ReplyDelete
  9. Wow SPN beat Arrow in demos. SPN fans must be going insaneee

    ReplyDelete
  10. I was thinking the same thing haha... but I really hope it's the latter. That would be fantastic, not that I'm actively rooting against Arrow. It would just feel really good.

    ReplyDelete

  12. They could always adjust up/down for the final numbers later.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I am sure that can not be right... going to wait for the finals on that one.

    ReplyDelete
  14. really? supernatural, an eight year old show, beat Arrow by 0.2? and Arrow is a winner but supernatural is not? typical Marc. but that's not the point, I guess the final rating would be arrow adjust up 0.1 and supernatural adjust down 0.1 (cause 818 is really kinda bad) so the two will be even. but the truth remains, ppl losing interest in new shows quickly, and supernatural just keep staying strong! Wake up CW, this is the show that deserves your attention.

    ReplyDelete
  15. of coz it can happen, supernatural is getting 0.9-1.0 pretty often this season, though a little sad to see arrow drop a bit

    ReplyDelete
  16. That's crazy. Thanks! I love Supernatural but I honestly wasn't expecting it to beat Arrow, glad it did if I'm honest though haha. Sucks for Arrow though :(

    ReplyDelete
  17. Lol same here! I would love for Supernatural to beat Arrow, even though I do love Arrow.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Eidnoreid Pills28 March 2013 at 15:58

It's still stronger than most of the other shows on the network and Marc has been clearly biased against Supernatural for whatever reason.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Criminal Minds was a repeat when all 8PM shows were new, and Arrow had an additional NBA competition in the 8PM too in the west coast AFAIK. This could be a one time event if it holds in the finals, we'll see later today and next week I guess

    ReplyDelete
  20. I don't doubt SPN's numbers, just Arrow's. I think that it will be adjusted up.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Why is Arrow a winner when it was beaten in the ratings by Supernatural? Supernatural should be the winner.

    ReplyDelete
  22. If you read the explanations, the analysis is based on the early HOUSEHOLD ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Glad Chicago Fire is looking fine. Worried about Nashville. I want at least one more season - no I need it.

Kinda happy Supernatural beat Arrow in rating. I love Arrow, but it's nice for SPN to beat it in rating once in a while, just to prove it deserves to be on the night it is unlike some think.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I need the Neighbors to stay in my life. Last nights episode was so good I watched it twice :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. It might be adjusted up, but I wouldn,t be surprise if it stay like that. Its slowly, but surely going down in ratings

The first 5 eps had 1,2 of eaverage, episode 6 to 10 had 1,14 and episode 11 to 15's average was 1. It already had two 0,9 since the show returned

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wait, typical Marc what? He didn't state his opinion,he didn't day anything about SPN,all he did was give you the ratings...

    ReplyDelete
  27. still dont know, its ratings suggest cancellation but ABC will likely renew 1 new comedy and 1 new drama just to save face. So at the moment it looks like Nashville and The Neighbours may sneak 2nd seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  28. More like 75% to 25% for the neighbors being renewed, because it still did better than most shows. Besides it is one of the most sucessful new shows on their network.

    ReplyDelete
  29. WOW it went higher then last weeks ep way to go SPN!

    ReplyDelete
  30. That's because he usually have a nasty comment about SPN each week. I watch SPN without being a huge fan but it is obvious that this Mark guy likes to despise the show. He didn't in his review this week but usually does and declared Arrow a winner when they got less than SPN in demo rating..

    ReplyDelete
  31. No worries, its all good! Oh no doubt about it Marc, can come off that way.I ignore him, besides i doubt he reads these comments.

    ReplyDelete
  32. haha,my bad, big mistake :) hope you don't mind :) though I do feel like Marc is biased, not only favoritism towards arrow and trashing spn , I read other comment below, seems like he is biased towards some other shows too.
