Supernatural - Song-to-Scene - 1F - Poll

5 Jan 2013

It was a decisive victory for Wanted Dead or Alive yesterday, receiving 96% of the votes. Also moving on to round 2 are the Knight Rider Theme (55%), Walking on Sunshine (72%) and What a Wonderful World (82%). I was pleasantly surprised by the results of these polls and I think that bodes well for coming up with a true song-to-scene winner instead of a favorite scene winner. If you are confused about the difference between these, please read the Contest Basics in the link below. It will also show which songs-to-scene are in this contest and after round 1 is finished, it will have the results so far.

Also below are links to the videos for today's nominees. Sadly I could not find one of House of the Rising Sun but it is throughout the season 2 episode Roadkill if you want to watch it. If anyone knows of a link, please let me know so I can add it to the list. Other than that, nominations will be open until Saturday night for the songs you wish would be on SPN but have not been aired yet. Happy voting!

  1. 1. Beautiful Loser - It's Beautiful Loser for me, but not quite as overwhelmingly as I thought it would be. In the nomination stage, I thought this song was perfect but after countless rewatches I'm still not sure if it is the song and scene or just the montage editing that makes this great for me. The opening verse fits perfectly for me but I am pretty sure that Dean realizes he can't have it all. It's Lisa who first suggests they can make it work, while Dean had his doubts. The way they split between past and present though when saying "just can't have it all" IS perfect and goes to show how Dean is split by the situation. On one hand he cares for Lisa and Ben but he doesn't have his brother and he can't let that go. In the end it is this juxtaposition that will win my vote for the next two rounds. After that it's a tossup. This song does get major bonus points for cutting out the one line of the song that REALLY does not fit. (He'll never make any enemies / enemies, no.)

House of the Rising Sun - The only thing that fits song-to-scene to me here is the mood of the song. The lyrics don't fit at all.

    2. Highway to Hell - I thoroughly admit this song could be any road song and still fit. However, given this was the pilot which set up the framework of the series, it sums up the whole first season well. It showed the importance of classic rock and foretold a road trip from hell, where all your nightmares are trying to eat you. After all, when the song ends Sam is moments away from literally walking into his nightmare. Is this a strong contender? Nope, but I think given its placement it is stronger than its competition. For this round at least.

In-a-Gadda-da-Vida - Scene wise this one wins hands down for me. Song intro wise it's masterful. Song-to-scene is a whole other story. While it may be hard to understand the lyrics, they do not fit at all. It's about a man who wants his lover to join him in the Garden of Eden. This is one of the most whacked out lyric fits of the series, joining the Do You Love Me? bloodbath in The End and White Rabbit in anything.

    3. Cold as Ice - This is the shortest song-to-scene moment of them all (4 seconds and then silence) but it is a 100% fit. Nothing on the show has ever been colder than Ellen in that car. Glacial is putting it mildly; you could cut the tension and serve it on a platter.

White Rabbit - This is a lot like In-a-Gadda-da-Vida and House of the Rising Sun to me. The mood is awesome but the lyrics are so far off in Wonderland I can't give it my nod.

    4. Rock of Ages - This one's going to go far and for good reason. "It's better to burn out than fade away." Dean sure did have something to say. I guess if you are choosing to get between Michael and Lucifer instead of sitting it out, that's the sentiment you go with. Love how it stops with "We're gonna burn this damn place down / Down to the ground" since that's pretty much what the plan was at that point. Short, but a great fit. If it gets down to this and Beautiful Loser going against each other though, I am going to have trouble. Mostly because the power of this song for me isn't in the scene it's played in but in the scene right before it.

All Right Now - Well it was certainly better after they had killed ShifterDean, but I'm not sure things were all right. Even if Sam says it's okay, his yearning for normal remains throughout season one. He's not all right with hunting instead of going to college at this point. About the only that is all right in this scene is the brother bond, and maybe that's the only thing that really matters. Not enough to beat Rock of Ages, but enough for this to be an awesome scene for me. Well except for the verse playing in the background about a guy hooking up after a concert.

  2. Pretty Easy

    1. Beautiful Loser - Perfect for Dean's situation there at the beginning of Season 6, having a normal life, but not being able to have his brother around.

    2. Highway To Hell - Fitting because of what they were going back to, Sam finding Jess on the ceiling and deciding to get back to hunting and it went downhill from there. And he and Dean both ended up literally going to Hell.

    3. Cold As Ice - White Rabbit is creepy and does fine for its scene but Cold As Ice has more fitting lyrics for the scene

    4. Rock Of Ages - With the whole better to burn than fade away apart

  3. 1. Beautiful Loser was perfect for Dean's life in the season 6 premiere. I am a little older than most on here, I imagine. House of the Rising Sun is about a house of ill repute. It would have been better on 4.03 when Dean took Cas to whore house.
    2. Highway to Hell. Sam was heading home to Jessica's death and hunting the YED.
    3. Cold as Ice...seriously, yes. Ellen was exactly that. lol White Rabbit fits in a way. We are looking at one of the psychic children. The White Rabbit comes from the books Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. The Annotated Alice goes along with the idea most of us have. It's a drug trip.
    4. Rock of Ages wasn't just a good song for an episode. Dean was going in to try to help reach Sam and to be there for him when he died. Yes, he had plenty to say. It was all to Sam. Both songs were good, but this one is special to me.

  4. Beautiful Loser.

Apart from the fact that I love that montage and the song, I think it's more the title than the lyrics that is so spot on for the scene.

There's no doubt that Dean is beautiful in a manly way of course.:) and he is definitely a loser in the sense that he has lost his brother and the hunting life that he loves.

He has Lisa but as soon as Sam comes back as we all know he will, he's going to have to make a choice; stay with Lisa and Ben or go with Sam, thus losing one or the other, so for me it's a perfect fit.

Love "the House of The Rising Sun" but don't really see the relevance with the scene unless as a metaphor for the sun to rise on Molly who finally sees the truth and gets to go to the afterlife, as opposed to her haunting the road and being tortured and killed each year.

    X

Highway to Hell because the road they have just taken leads right there, metaphorically and physically.

The other is a great song but I don't see much relevance.

    X

    Cold As Ice.

I like the song and there's no doubt at all that it fits the scene. An iceberg would have been warmer than Ellen there and I get her attitude for as a parent myself I would be angry too if I thought someone had put my child in danger!

I liked the haunting White Rabbit too but the former fits better.

    X

This is one of those instances where one's feelings influence the choice.
Although I'm not a particular fan of Rock of Ages, I get that the lyrics are great for the scene and the Impala rushing into the cemetery is so cool but what it leads to is a tragedy not a triumph, so I'm going with my heart this time and voting for the other.

"All Right Now" is fitting too, as the brothers are good with each other if not completely "all right."

  5. 1. Beautiful Loser - This is one of those cases where the song enhanced
....the scene in that it spoke to what was going on beneath Dean's surface. Easy
....decision for me. I have always loved House of the Rising Sun, but for all of the
....nominations where the song sits so far under the scene, for the entire scene, it just
....doesn't belong in this particular contest.

    2. Argh! I expected anything going up against In-a-Gadda-da-Vida this early would be
....a slam dunk for me and this wasn't. Highway To Hell almost won my vote...because,
....in the pilot, it is kinda of the anthem to what the show is about...but its not
....played when they're on the road at the end of the episode; they're headed back to
....Stanford and that kind of softened the song-to-scene impact for me. I've already
....stated that this is on my top 10 song-to-scene list. It may not be the popular
....opinion but, for me, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida ratchets the tension of the scene...the
....song and the scene work together to get me just where they want me when
.... Dean's face is revealed. So, my vote goes to In-a-Gadda-da-Vida

    3. I almost didn't look at the clips this one was so easy. But I'm glad I did. The French
....version of the White Rabbit clip was a freaky hoot!. :-) I had to pull out my DVDs
....to rewatch and evaluate the scene.
....Anyhoo...while White Rabbit is a perfect choice for a therapy session when there's
....no way the therapist is gonna believe the patient. Cold as Ice is the most
....perfect 2 seconds of any song in this competition. :-D

    4. Another easy one Rock of Ages I say what I said the first time I saw this
....scene. Best. Entrance. Ever. and that song was a huge part of why.

  6. Jinkies...one of those rare moments where we almost completely agree. :-)

  7. Beautiful Loser just makes the scene

Highway to Hell sums up the series in just 3 words

Cold As Ice, don't think the temp could have gotten any lower in that car, yeah going to be a fun trip.

Rock Of Ages, perfect song in my favorite ep. I really do think I am losing it, even typing about this ep gets me teary eyed.

  8. I'm going to make an argument for White Rabbit. I love the song in that scene because it's not so obvious - it's not a narration of what's going on in the scene, but instead a clever take on the scene that puts a different spin on it. The song brings up associations of the 60s, psychedellic drugs, and hallucinations. Pair that with a character talking about a yellow-eyed man who visits him in his dreams and tells him to hurt people, and you've got an outsider's view on how these psychic kids appear to the rest of the world. Imagine the scene without that song. All of the humor on how Scott sounded to the psychiatrist would have been lost.

  9. I'd first heard that House of the Rising Sun was a jail in New Orleans. Later I heard it was a drug house. Interesting how the same song can be interpreted so many ways.

  10. I'm older (74) and always heard it was about a dope house. In an case I have always loved the song and enjoyed hearing it on SPN.
