The latest results are undeniably the most shocking so far in the competition. The runner of two years ago, The Vampire Diaries, has been eliminated at the first hurdle. Doctor Who and The Vampire Diaries both had a mega amount of votes in a poll which managed to get both fan bases voting en-masse, but Vampire Diaries fell just short. It's worth noting that The Vampire Diaries lost with more the second most votes of the competition so far. It had almost double the amount of votes of our second most popular poll. Also in a quieter poll Alias saw off the challenge of Six Feet Under in a comfortable fashion.
Today sees Castle make its mark in the competition, and after under performing last year is many peoples favourite to reach the later staged. To do so it first must beat the recently finished Desperate Housewives.
Also today we have a mega-clash with two of the biggest TV shows of the past twenty years going head to head. The X-Files stands in one corner, Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the other. Only one can progress. Which one I can not call!
If you want to see the draw for the rest of the competition, and see which show will take on which other show then head HERE for a look. Let the voting begin!

The only show I really have any interest in is The X-Files as it is genre defining TV! :)
ReplyDeleteOh Adam, how could you place Buffy and The X-Files against each other? These are my pick for best already concluded shows. My only hope in making a choice is to wait 23 hours and vote for the one with the least amount of votes. Impossible decision!
ReplyDeleteLuckily the first race is a no-brainer for me. Castle all the way. Here's hoping it is in the final 4.
Castle and The X-Files. :-)
ReplyDeleteX-Files vs. Buffy? Two of my all time favorites pitted against each other - way too hard. Thankfully the first poll was very easy (go Castle!) leaving me lots of time to ponder my own personal Sophie's Choice. Buffy or Scully? Spike or Mulder? Giles or Skinner? Cigarette Smoking Man or The Mayor and Glory? Aliens or vampires? Too much to decide ... so confused ... head hurts ...
ReplyDeleteX-Files and Castle for me
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt The X-Files, and Castle!
ReplyDeleteI do it for the joy of seeing people struggle :P
ReplyDelete#itsnotmyfaultipromise
Castle all the way!!! and X-Files.
ReplyDeleteTrust No One (except Fox Mulder)
ReplyDeleteThat Buffy X-Files show down is going to be an interesting one...
ReplyDeleteThat's the biggest problem with this poll. I don't really understand, how they placed very popular shows against each other in the very first round. Nobody puts Rafael Nadal Vs Roger Federer in the opening round of a tournament!! I don't really like this poll.
ReplyDeleteas much as I love The X-Files, Buffy will always be the number one show for me!
ReplyDeleteDesperate Housewives and Buffy.
ReplyDeleteCastle and X-Files!
ReplyDeleteOooo painful. The X-Files vs. Buffy. I finally went with Buffy, but I wish they could both win. And in the first poll I voted for Desperate Housewives.
ReplyDeleteCastle was an easy choice... But to choose between Buffy and X-files was hard! At the end, I chose Buffy.
ReplyDeleteWith the username Spike - I think I may have been disappointed if you didn't vote Buffy
ReplyDeleteCastle and Buffy.
ReplyDeleteI really wish the polls were re-arranged so that I could vote for the X-Files AND Buffy though. :(
lol Not that I think you meant to, but it really feels like you're dismissing Buffy's influence on television as well...
ReplyDeleteCastle and X-Files.
ReplyDeleteBuffy vs X-Files ... both shows are brilliant and were pioneers in so many things concerning genre shows! This was the hardest choice so far ;/ but in the end I went with Buffy!
ReplyDeleteAnd Castle without a doubt!
I was only teasing Adam. What shows come against each other in a round is usually a result of how many nominations each had in contests like this. Generally it's a mathematical thing, not a trying to drive us insane kind of thing.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Adam is dismissing it - Buffy certainly had an impact. If you were to compare the impact of the two shows, however, I'd certainly argue X-Files had a bigger influence than Buffy in the long-run.
ReplyDeleteI went with Castle and I reluctantly chose Buffy over X-Files only because, as a series, Buffy finished a lot stronger than X-Files did.
ReplyDeleteCastle, for sure, but X-Files or Buffy, X-Files or Buffy, X-Files or Buffy...? hmm, I'll go with Buffy! ;)
ReplyDeleteMy votes and sentiments exactly
ReplyDeleteBuffy! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm not surprised TVD was voted out. Season 3 was super weak. Besides, the show will never be able to even come close to some of the best shows ever.
Desperate Housewives (sorry Castle) and Buffy.
ReplyDeleteLike CB said... didn't dismiss it, just stating that X-Files was monumental for TV. That's no disrespect to Buffy, just not on the same scale as The X-Files in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteDesperate Housewives! So sad it will be out in the first round... no chance against such a large fan base like Castle has...
ReplyDeleteIn all fairness, this is a 2012 competition. Based on your analogy I'm sure in ten years time you may see Nadal and Federer in the opening round of a tournament :P
ReplyDeleteIn all serious though it's purely down to the luck of the draw.... The most nominated shows, current and finished, couldn't meet each other straight away. X-Files and Buffy, for whatever reason, both didn't fall into that category.
He could've got it from Cowboy Bebop.
ReplyDeletecastle and buffy!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite shows of all time are in these two polls. Castle on the first one. How do I choose between X-Files and Buffy? I'll go with X-Files because of Gillian.
ReplyDeleteCastle and Buffy for me and am surprised that Buffy is behind.
ReplyDeleteNever watched either of these, not like it would make much different, most my favourite shows are being voted out!
ReplyDeleteTom Scavo? Of course you voted for DH. I did too.
ReplyDeleteSame reasoning as me, regarding Buffy vs. X-Files.
ReplyDeleteMe too, Buffy over X-Files. Buffy was so darn much fun! And the greatest cast of characters, from Spike to Anya to Glory and that beast from Anya's side who was so nice to everyone. Loved X-Files, but Buffy ftw.
ReplyDeleteOnly by 4 percentage points, at this time.
ReplyDeleteYeah, you told me that before.
ReplyDeleteVoted for DH, but of course Castle is going to win
ReplyDeleteAlso voted for Buffy
Good to know... we have to lose with dignity :)
ReplyDeleteCastle and X-Files today.
ReplyDeleteCant believe TVD lost. That has to be the biggest upset since adam started these competitions
hehe. I'd vote for Buffy over ANYTHING.
ReplyDeleteI would also like to point out that Buffy should win this, for The Body alone.
ReplyDeleteCastle. DH was better this season than its previous seasons but Castle still had a much strong season for me.
ReplyDeleteBuffy...for several reasons....X-Files had a strong few seasons but, ultimately left me feeling as though the writers didn't respect the audience. ( This is, in part, due to a few things Chris Carter said in interviews.) With Buffy there may have been a few eps that missed the mark but always, when I looked back at a season I could see how that the big picture had been in place from the beginning.
BUFFY!!!!
ReplyDeleteCastle and Buffy this time around. Frankly, I don't think Desperate Housewives has a chance against a show like Castle, especially since it had about four or five seasons of less-than-average writing. And Buffy is still one of my favorite shows of all time. I grew up on it, and it was a brilliant show with a fantastic cast that in my opinion only got stronger as the years went on.
ReplyDeleteI think that second poll is going to be neck and neck, though! It's tough.
DH and Buffy!!! Girl Power!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think Buffy is still undervalued for what it brought to TV. The whole high school as hell theme really sold me on the show and how they could use the supernatural to highlight very real issues. It was also the first time I can remember that the little blonde cheerleader wasn't the victim but the hero. She saved people, killed monsters and basically kicked butt all over, paving the way for other empowered teens and females on TV. I mean without Buffy being a critical darling, I'm not sure we would have had Veronica Mars and other strong adolescent female roles.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to be a shared quandary. I would say Angel or Mulder instead of Spike but I liked the earlier seasons better. Other than that, yeah - I'm in the same boat. Both were groundbreaking shows that turned into TV obsessions for me. Both also let me down in the later years. Both included iconic characters who still resonate m=with me on the rewatch. Tough, tough choice today.
ReplyDeleteI agree very much so.
ReplyDeleteI'd expect for them to run close the entire time, probably flip flopping who's in the lead depending on what websites pick up the contest when.
ReplyDeleteIt was a huge upset. Probably a good thing we didn't do the predictions because a whole lot of people would be feeling the pain today.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry X-Files. I know you are good, and I love you... But this is Buffy we are talking about.
ReplyDeleteI mean, look at my icon!
Castle all the way, though that promo image (season 1?) make's me miss the Becket that looked like a badass detective.
Completely agree with your Buffy coment. Even if some episodes were weak, there was also this sense of something bigger behind. It was never aimless.
ReplyDeleteIs that what your icon means? I thought it was from Resident Evil.
ReplyDeleteBuffy was the first show I was obsessed with, the first show I loved and made me become a fan, so my vote is for Buffy. But The X files, I love you too!!
ReplyDeletecastle and buffy. really like the shows...buffy especially. so missing it...especially since they continued the comics but not the series. bad choice ...thats my opinion. it feels like the story is continuing but not justified. know what i mean?
ReplyDeleteIt's from one of the Buffy comics covers by Jo Chen.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice. I got my icon from Fringe.
ReplyDeleteCastle.
ReplyDeleteI really don't care if X-Files or Buffy takes the other poll. I love 'em both.
Easy choices today, Castle & X-Files. I did like Buffy but nothing brings out my inner geek more than X-Files and as I refuse to accept the existence of the last couple of seasons and the awful movie it's an easy win.
ReplyDeleteCastle (easy choice) and x-files for me
ReplyDeletevery easy poll,,//.CASTLE AND THE X-FILES...NEW AGAINST ALL...OLD..DIFFERENT SERIES & DECADES
ReplyDeleteNo contest in both.
ReplyDeleteCastle beats desperate housewives by a mile and Buffy The Vampire Slayer still remains as literally THE best show to ever grace out tvs.
BTVS comics cover art is among the best comics coverarts ever created. Be it Jo Chen, S.Morris or P.Notto, all the covers are freaking beautiful and brilliant.
ReplyDeleteAgreed! TVD first season was great. Now, TVD is just a shadow of its former self, full of misogyny, sexism and racism. And the lead female is horribly boring and bland.
ReplyDeleteI would really disagree.
ReplyDeleteIf not for BTVS, WE WOULD NOT HAVE the supernatural genre tv shows now.
X-files was still an "oldschool" genre fiction. Buffy reinvigorated the genre and set the standard for tv quality that is yet to be topped.
Was it REALLY that surprising that current trainwrecky misogynistic plotless TVD does NOT have as huge of following as competent, witty and interesting first season of TVD did?
ReplyDeleteYou're just a pathetic Buffy fanboy. How about you just suck my cock you fucking moron?
ReplyDeleteThe best episode of any show, ever!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed both shows - so I can't complain about either winning this poll. I also believe Scully (even though she did have some quite motherly moments) was a very strong female character. She wasn't the sole lead in the sense that Buffy was - but she was certainly a strong female character. This is not saying she was Buffy, she was nothing like her.
ReplyDeleteThat said - Buffy started in 1997 if I'm not mistaken and it's highly possible that many of the stories Buffy told wouldn't have happened if not for the X-Files. The X-Files drew comparisons for many of the modern day cult favorites (Fringe in particular) - and that's not going to change anytime soon. I think this shows that both shows had an impact - but in the end, I still think Buffy isn't nearly as successful as the X-Files in the long-run.
I also see the X-files as much more than a old school genre fiction - it set a standard for shows LIKE Buffy and made it clear that science fiction/relationships (not ness. romance because Mulder and Scully is much more than that).
Plus, shipping. Seriously, X-Files gets credit for that one (though I wasn't shipping for Mulder and Scully until much later in the show).
Agreed - I loved Buffy (by that, I mean I loved BUFFY), so I watched. The story was good and sure it ended better than the X-Files - but the fact is, the X-Files still is my favorite tv show of all-time despite my severe obsession with Lost.
ReplyDeleteSad the X-Files lost - I realize that the ending wasn't the best ,but for 7 years, it was the best show on television as far as I'm concerned. Congrats to Buffy fans though (I was technically one). Looks like I'm left to cheer Lost.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe the X-Files lost,what a bummer!
ReplyDeleteWow look at Castle go! This is the one to watch this year.
ReplyDeleteYep, it was my outside pick for the whole tournament when I looked at the site stats for the past 12 months.
ReplyDeletethe x flles !
ReplyDeleteI did my own predictions just for fun and I had it going to the final four. If it wins the final four, my guess is it wins everything.
ReplyDeleteI am an unapologetic Whedon Loyalist - Buffy and Castle all the way
ReplyDelete:(
