The 2012 STV Favourite TV Series Competition - Day 13 - Doctor Who vs. The Vampire Diaries & Alias vs. Six Feet Under

9 Jul 2012

Hey Guys,

Yesterdays polls delivered two perhaps surprising results, with How I Met Your Mother and Battlestar Galactica seeing off the two shows with stronger online fan bases in Community and 24. It's no surprise however as both shows are hugely popular and worthy of a place in the next round.

Today sees us begin the final quarter of round one, and it begins with a cracker of a showdown between the British TV flagship, Doctor Who challenging The CW's most prized possession in The Vampire Diaries. With the vampires holding such a big online fan base it will be tough for the Doctor to see round two, but he certainly has a fighting chance.

Also today we have J.J.Abrams' Alias challenging the HBO classic Six Feet Under. Both shows have seen a few years of dust since they last aired new episodes but both still have the chance at a second round challenge.

If you want to see the draw for the rest of the competition, and see which show will take on which other show then head HERE for a look. Let the voting begin!

  2. Not seen many of todays shows, but I went for Doctor Who. The Brit in me must be shining through :P

doctor who and vampire .runner up doc WINNER VAMPIRE..ALIAS AND SIX tough one i like both but i vote ..SIX.

  5. So easy to vote when you only watch one show in each poll.
Vampire Diaries, which was a pleasant surprise for me when I started watching.Plus, season 3 is my favorite so far,so I'm very happy with it right now.

And Alias! One of my favorite shows of all time.Amazing plot, action and characters. It was the first show I watched regularly and it was also the first show where I liked the bad and the good guys equally!Weird,I know, but it had some awesome bad guys!

  6. Will have to go with Six Feet Under and Dr.Who.

Vampire Diaries S3 was an utter trainwreck. Logical fanbase thinks so, critics think so, i think so. It was a huge mess of misogyny, sexism and twilight-level of character decisions. i LOVED the show in the first season and still supported it in second, but even current lower-quality Dr.Who with the whole horrible pregnancy storyline is still miles above the mess that is TVD.

AS for Alias and 6feet Under...its a hard choice because I LOVE both shows. Sadly Six Feet Under is a bit more original and Alias, while definitely great show, was still just a try to repeat the mood and spice of La femme Nikita.

  7. Dr.Who is...not at its best. Moffat's years started STRONG and Karen Gillan's Amy pond was possibly the BEST companion of the whole series reboot...and then the current season hit. I guess Moffat focused more on Sherlock this year...The moment Karen Gillan leaves the show, I will not touch it till Moffat goes away from the lead writer role.

However it still beats most of lower quality shows like tvd even in its current state.

  8. Doctor Who is one of the best sci-fi show, the last season was amazing. VD S3 was terrible, no storyline!! So I voted for DW in the first poll.

    ReplyDelete
  9. OMG, tomorrow's vote is going to be sooo hard but today was easy, Dr. Who and Six Feet Under. Alias fell apart (as do most of JJ's show) toward the end and Six Feet had the balls to do something truly different with the reset and it was brilliant.

  10. When I saw the first poll, I thought it was going to be a hard to choose till I thought about how DW is now and I had to pick TVD. I use to be the biggest fan of DW till Matt Smith took over, I feel since then the show has gone done hill. Not sure why but I just can't stand Matt Smith :\ TVD is my favourite show at the moment :D

  11. Yes,when i voted for Dr.Who it was for what it once was,not for what it is. Now that i'm thinking about it i shoudn't have even voted, it is after all for the 2012 season...did not use my brain...sorry all!

Alias all the way. Sloane's ending was epic.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Alias was wonderful. J. G. was just so good; she was just a natural in the part. The other characters were also just spot-on. One of the few show where I realy admired the talent of the female actress.
Then Dr Who. It's a classic of one's younger days, although I'm not too impressed with the actual Doctor.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Finally two shows that I really like, Alias and Six feet under. Difficult choice,

I ended up voting for TVD and Six feet under.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ugh...that first poll. I hate to vote against DW but I've never seen much of it, and I do actually really like TVD. :|

Also, I LOVE Six Feet Under but I've been wanting so badly to watch Alias. Oh well, for now SFU gets it. such an incredible tv show.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Doctor Who (the Tenant years) gets my vote without hesitation although I watched season one of the Vampire Diaries and it was a lot better than I expected. I just hate love triangles so... I also voted for Alias, mostly because I tend to be anti-HBO shows and I've liked what I've seen of Alias.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Agreed. Dr.Who even on its worst day(and frankly that was exactly what the latest season was, imo), beats TVD's trainwrecky-ness by a mile.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Its still a great show, though. Not as good as before, but good none the less.

Way better than its competition in this poll so the choice is very much so right one :P

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yeah, current Doctor is underwhelming and I'd go as far as to say that his companion, Amy Pond, is what carried the last two seasons.

    Tenant's Doctor was way better.

    ReplyDelete
  20. S1 of TVD is arguably the best season of entire show, by now there's barely anything left of actual plot and the whole show is all about one giant love triangle full of character inconsistencies.

And yeah, Tenant years of DR. Who are amongst the BEST things ever to happen to genre tv. So much emotion and talent.

    ReplyDelete
  21. vampire diaries and alias...easy peasy

    ReplyDelete
  22. It was always a soap opera. It will always BE a soap opera. And while I didn't think season 3 was all that great, it was nowhere near as bombastically terrible as you're making it out to be.

    ReplyDelete
  23. So true.
The Scottish lass was great, but this guy's a bit of a boiled potato compared to the perfect Dr. Who that Tennant gave us. He was a balanced mix of serious and quirky. :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Easy, The Vampire Diaries and Alias

    ReplyDelete
  25. I voted Vampire Diaries and Six Feet Under. Very easy today for me ! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Also have only watched the first two series of Doctor Who...although it was foreseeable that it has no chance against VD. It is a fun series but I miss Rose. :(

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think this poll isn't supposed to be constricted of your opinion of the 2012 season. Since how can you compare it to Firefly or so? lol

    ReplyDelete
  28. Alias, since this was the first show I followed closely since it aired and it was also my first TV series on DVD. Fantastic cast with Jen Garner, Ron Rifkin (Proto-Ben :D), Victor Garber and the rest. Even if the story suffered in the last few years.

And Doctor Who since I liked the first two seasons and haven't started Vampire Diaries yet.

Doc Who and Six Feet Under for me

    ReplyDelete
  30. For anyone interested in watching the original Doctor Who, I maintain a list of all the dvds on Netflix. Without this list it is a lot of work finding them all and figuring out which order to add them to your queue. I hope someone gets some use out of the list. Happy viewing!

  31. Very easy choices for me this time around. I went with The Vampire Diaries (which isn't great, but I was never able to get into Doctor Who) and Alias, which is still one of my favorite spy dramas on television. Man, I miss that show...

    ReplyDelete
  32. I know i personally felt that way, since i don't watch anymore why vote for it?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've tried DW a few times but never was able to get into it, so TVD wins here. And even though I'm trying to finally catch up on 6FU after all the great things I've heard (especially about the finale), I have to vote for Alias..

    ReplyDelete
  34. Today I vote for the assumed losers I think...

Doctor Who to me is the quintessential UK drama with its campy humor and off beat lead actors. It is just so much fun and rarely boring. Vampire Diaries was something I enjoyed at first, but now is repetitive and predictable and beginning to bore me.

Six Feet Under was one of the original series of its time or any time for that matter. Some great actors and some great writing made for one of the most under-appreciated series ever, if not one of the best series ever.

Alias was a lot of fun and interesting in the first couple seasons and then it spiraled down hill with its Rambaldi slant.

    Doctor Who
    Alias

  35. Doctor Who and Alias for me.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Very hard choice between Doctor Who and TVD. But, hey, I'm a girl and I can't resist XD. So I've voted for the more handsome hero.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Doctor Who, all the way. There's very few shows that are near as good as Doctor Who; and certainly not The Vampire Diaries.

Never watched the other shows, so no vote.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thanks so much for posting this. Do you by any chance know what order to watch the first 4 DVD's in? I heard they were out of order. I thought I would see how it all began.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Last year Vampire Diaries lost in the finale against Supernatural right?

Let's see what happens this year.

    ReplyDelete
  40. S2 is the best.

And TVD is one of the best dramas that are right now in network TV.

They're the only ones that can pull a love triangle and do it right.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Abhiroop Saluja In terms of numbers. TVD averages around 3.5 Million viewers and Dr. Who in the much smaller UK averages around 7.5 Million viewers.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Unless they have fixed it, the order you want is discs 3, 1, 2.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I also created a list for people who just want to see the highlights without watching all 25 seasons of the original. It includes the introduction and departure of all the doctors and sidekicks, plus the introduction of the daleks, cybermen, etc.

It is still a long list, but much shorter than the complete list.

  44. Season Two was....a mixed bag.

Everything Up until the end of Masquerade was a mix of great and decent. After that...show fell....hard with quality going down through the rest of the season and the main "heroine" (notice the clauses) becoming more and more of a mary sue and less and less of a character.

And sorry, but nope. TVD does NOT HAVE a love triangle. Its not convincing, its not realistic and it skips over any form of believable development. Its like "they are in love because they are". Yes, so? Why are they in love? How their characters complement each other? How their characters are affected by that? WHERE'S THE dilemma of love triangle? None of that is there.

Arguably TVD's main "triangle" (note the clauses again) is one of the worst and most boring aspects of the entire show. Almost no one watched it for the triangle in the first season. They watched for flashbacks, twists and compelling interesting storyline. They watched wanting to know what is the deal with katherine and elena. they watched to learn more about Elena's missing parents, they watched because of the lore of the town. They watched it for side characters like Alaric

All of that was gone afterward. Mid S2 its like suddenly NO ONE ELSE matters,. Its just Elena, the infallible godly mary sue who makes no mistakes and her two pawns who sulk after her and cry. Don't let me get started on Season three, even. Currently, the DES triangle is the TV-representation of Twilight.

TVD takes "Heroes" approach into romance, by stuffing two or three people together and completely neglecting to do any sort of build up.

Show had its strengths back then when it was good, but "romance" or "love triangles" never was one of them.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I can't believe TVD lost! Didn't even make it past round 1 =(

    ReplyDelete
  46. While I am excited that Doctor Who beat Vampire Diaries, I am very surprised. If we had been doing predictions, I would have said Vampire Diaries would have been beaten by Castle in the next round.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I agree. I think it is more a vote for your feelings overall about a show. Obviously you can't judge a show that didn't air this year by this year alone so it doesn't make sense to me that you would judge current shows any differently.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Awesome. That's the way I'll order it then. I really appreciate you doing this.

    ReplyDelete
  49. No, that was 2 years ago. Supernatural was against Fringe last year and it was a much more exciting contest. Both spent a lot of time neck in neck and traded the lead a lot. This year there is a chance the finale will be Game of Thrones vs Castle, given that many fans were less than stoked at both Supernatural and Fringe's current seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well, I'm happy to see that many of us here aren't the only ones who can get surprised. Next round pits Breaking Bad against Game of Thrones, which will also be heartbreaking to see one of those loose.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Despite vocal minority on the internet, TVD is not as popular as it was. IT has alienated a huge part of fanbase due to the controversial decisions, lack of coherence and writers blowing up at their fans in very insensitive manner.

The show does not have the following it did in first season, which is clearly reflected in show's ratings(show having lost around million and half viewers since the end of S1)

Doctor Who fanbase on other hand is HUMONGOUS. Its a show with legacy of DECADES and a lot of brilliant actors and fan-favorite episodes. Its not really surprising TVD, in its current miserable state, was beat.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I understand that you are very unhappy with Vampire Diaries. You have made that perfectly and repetitively clear on this thread. I don't watch TVD (I voted for Doctor Who) so I have no vested interest in it or how the fans feel at this time. I would say that you probably need to stop watching it though since it is angering you so much.

I am surprised that Doctor Who beat Vampire Diaries, not because of show quality or even ratings. I am surprised because I don't remember Doctor Who articles making a huge splash on this site whereas The Vampire Diaries ones usually have a lot of views, although a whole lot less than they did in season 2 of course. These polls are NEVER about the quality of the series, as we hear someone complaining about every other poll. They are about who can rally their fan base the quickest to get the most votes. In the past, Vampire Diaries has shown itself to do that well. In fact, they were winning every single time I checked this poll yesterday. I ended up putting out another all call to Doctor Who fans just to get it closer.

My guess is that The Vampire Diaries fans were busy with the countless other polls that are going on right now for it, especially for Ian Sommerhalder, and this particular one didn't get picked up on the main fan sites. Whereas it is equally likely that some major Doctor Who fan sites did pick it up so that it could eke out a win. My guess is that if the same poll were run on a different day 8 out 10 times TVD would win. You have a personal vendetta against Vampire Diaries and it sounds like you, while being disappointed with its current state, still love Doctor Who. I don't care one way or another about Vampire Diaries and I like Doctor Who. In the big scheme of this contest, both mean exactly nothing. It's all about who mobilizes their fan base best in 24 hours.
