The 2012 STV Favourite TV Series Competition - Day 9 - Revenge. vs. Supernatural & Smallville vs. The West Wing

28 Jun 2012

Hey Folks,

We have now officially passed the half way point of round one, and we have 16 of our 32 shows ready and waiting for their chance to progress into the third round. The two shows taking their place in the next round were NCIS, which snuck past The Walking Dead in a close battle, and Arrested Development, which creeped over the line by overtaking Flash-forward in the final few hours of the day.

Before then we have to wrap up the second half of round one, which starts today with the two time champion Supernatural getting its competition underway. It faces a brand new show which has some popularity around these parts, Revenge, and it will be a good early indication on how Supernatural is going to do.

We also have superhero hit Smallville challenging Aaron Sorkin's most successful TV series, The West Wing in a day that is sure to excite. Can the cult Superman show defeat the Emmy Award eating smash hit that was The West Wing. One thing is certain; should bring in two very different sets of fans

If you want to see the draw for the rest of the competition, and see which show will take on which other show then head HERE for a look. Let the voting begin!

  1. It's all about The West Wing for me today. Epic TV series that is one of the best. I'm a big Aaron Sorkin fan, so it's all to easy to pick.

In the other poll I would go for Supernatural, as it's not a bad TV series.

  2. At long last...Supernatural!Haven't watched Revenge, but even if I had,it would make no difference.

And Smallville. It was the first TV show I watched regularly,so I have a soft spot for it.

  3. Well i can see i'll be in the minority today, i tried watching SPN and it didn't do anything for me.I'm going with The West Wing, what a great show! Revenge is my second pick but if it lost i wouldn't sleep over it.

  8. Nelly, don't forget this is only the first round, once they get into the second round it will get
harder....But don't forget its for fun, that is one reason why they bother. They give us this while the shows are on hiatus, and they do it on there own time.

  9. Wow, I feel like a jerk but I LOVE what I love, Supernatural & Smallville

..my darling I know is only for fun and those HIATUS ..shows..huuh..they try to crash SUPERNATURAL..but they need medical attention for broken fictitious nails or claws..enjoy a funny battle

  11. "Faints"
I would never have thought you would have liked Supernatural. :)
See just how wrong one can be!
    Only teasing! :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Supernatural and The West Wing. I love SV but there was too much baggage dragging along for the second half of the series.

    ReplyDelete
  13. love all those shows. but Supernatural and Smallville are the obvious choice... because they both have the amazing Jensen Ackles in it...
come on SPN fans...lets win this!!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Supernatural and West Wing. Not that Smallville didn't have it's moments, but the West Wing was spectacular.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Supernatural and Smallville for me. I've never watched the West Wing or Revenge, and neither of them particularly appeal to me as shows.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I went with Supernatural and Smallville. Supernatural wasn't even a question - it's one of my absolute favorite shows on TV, and I think it's underrated. I look forward to seeing how they'll do out of the death slot next season. As far as the second poll goes, it's simple: I've never seen The West Wing. I hear it's a brilliant show, so hopefully I'll get to it someday. But for now? Superman gets the vote.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I have watched up to "The Curious Case of Dean Winchester"... the episode dragged so much I never got through it when I was doing my SPN watch, and since then I've just not got back to it.

I thought S1 had some of the best episodes that I've seen, but I enjoyed the S3 arc towards the end of the season, and I thought S4 had some decent episodes as well. S2 was a little hit and miss for me though... and I was enjoying 5 until TCCODW came along :P

    ReplyDelete
  18. Supernatural all the way, let's win another poll, see this one.

    http://www.eonline.com/news/watch_with_kristin/golden_remotes_2012_winners_are/325796?cmpid=sn-000000-twitterfeed-365-kristin&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=twitterfeed_kristin&dlvrit=51396

Also Smallville. The best clean family shows are on CW. lol

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yeah, they put SPN in the death spot and just like most of the characters on the show, it comes back from the dead. lol

    ReplyDelete
  20. The CW shows are sure in the first round in general (not just this one) :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. I fell for SPN with the first ep, J2 seemed like they had been doing their characters for years. It is all about family and is my favorite TV show. I have cried/sobbed more like it, with these brothers and love the Angel/Demon arc.. I love Revenge also, but was so easy for me. lol

    ReplyDelete
  22. That last sentence there says a lot about you!! :p

Well, it's good that you did like some of the episodes. One can't ask for fairer than that! I didn't like TCCODW either.

However I do share your liking for Lost which I loved every minute of, even the bits that dragged a little, and 24.
Two out of five ain't bad :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes i know how much you love the show, even though i don't watch i read your comments.I understand how emotionally invested you are in SPN,F

    ReplyDelete
  24. First poll was a no-brainer: it's always going to be Supernatural for me. But Revenge is a great show as well.
Second poll, I gave it to Smallville even though I never really got into it. For Jensen. =)

    ReplyDelete
  25. SPN also won it here last year! Be nice if it was something different this year.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Glad to see that Jensen won Drama King. Now we have to keep our fingers crossed that either he or Jared (I'm banking for the former) wins the Teen Choice Award for Sci-Fi/Fantasy Actor. :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Again it happens that I haven't watched any of these shows. I did watch some of The West Wing, but it didn't catch fire with me. No voting from me today.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Woo hoo! I get to participate. What a great way to start vacation and for once I have watched a decent amount of each show in the poll. The hardest vote is Smallville vs The West Wing. With both I enjoyed over one season but then my attention waned and I stopped watching. Will have to do a last minute gut vote I think.

The other poll is easy for me. I watched Revenge because it was my aunt's favorite new show. I liked how Revenge moved at a breathtaking pace and it's the juiciest show not airing during the day this year. I have really enjoyed the episodes I've seen and can't wait to get caught up over the summer as I hear there are even bigger twists at the end.

Still Supernatural has been my favorite show since 2005. As my adoration typically wanes for a show between the 3-5 year mark, this is my longest TV love. I started watching because it was being touted as a new X-Files and Buffy, my other great TV loves, and I found the pilot to be one of the few genuinely scary episodes I'd ever seen on TV. However it was the third episode that truly hooked me. By that time both of the main characters became full-fledged people and their journey became a scheduled part of my week. Since then SPN has had its ups and downs just like any other show, but no show has captured my interest as much as this one. In the end it's an engaging show about two brothers who face impossible odds to do impossible tasks in the name of family and loyalty, who prevail when courage is tested. It is unlike most other genre shows because of its delicate balance between high drama, laugh out loud comedy, scares, gross scenes, and delicious snark. For me, Supernatural at its best is more heart pulling than the most acclaimed drama, funnier than the biggest comedy, and more devoted to family than anything on TV. It may not be for everyone, but I strongly encourage everyone to give it a chance. It may surprise you and hey, Netflix has made it easy to get caught up by having the first 6 seasons on streaming.

Thank you for this sweet little homage to a great little show. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I just enjoy these polls because it is only one vote, can't pack the ballot box, so may the best show win....and I just hope it is SPN again. lol

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well said and glad you got to vote, I was thinking about you.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Supernatural is indeed one of the best shows out there, albeit severely underrated. I absolutely agree with everything you said about it!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I always wondered where you stopped. I have to say season 4 and 5 were not my favorite. I'm glad you gave it so much time.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Adam is one of the people who tried Supernatural because of the Best Show contest. Hopefully there will be more this year.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The pilot was surprisingly good for me too. Usually it takes quite a long time for actors and crew to gel but for SPN it felt like Jensen and Jared understood the characters right from the start. Crucial since the brother relationship was what made the show stand out from all others right from the start for me. It's similar to the Walter-Peter relationship on Fringe, in that it is the relationship that ties me to the show even more than the plot.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Supernatural barely beat Fringe last year. I would expect the contest this year to be even more tough.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Dahne

I'm with you all the way there! The viewing numbers must rise. :)
I'm really rather curious to see how it does on the Wednesday night.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Should be interesting to see what happens to Supernatural's ratings this season. A combo of new night, bigger competition, better rated lead-in (I presume) and a bunch of people discovering Supernatural on Netflix this summer should make it an interesting ride.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love Revenge, but I love most SPN, so I voted SPN in the first poll

    ReplyDelete
  40. Underrated is a great way to put it. I can't tell you how many people have been trying it on Netflix this summer and coming away addicted. It's been great watching people discover it for the first time - many of whom said they never heard of the show and tried it when they were bored because Netflix recommended it. I hope more people give it a try. I don't expect a big jump in the ratings next year but a little rise would be nice.

Supernatural (I love Revenge, but it's SPN, one of my absolutely favorite shows!) and Smallville

    ReplyDelete
  42. nellymendezcolon28 June 2012 at 15:27

...hello...how was the vacation ..I remember that contest was very close & tight I did not expect any different result in this year competition and remember the advice you give me to create a poll about white collar I did ..BUT..I couldn’t transfer to the spoiler page is right now in my polldaddy account sleeping with the death...AWESOME..

    ReplyDelete
  43. Despite the face that I don't think Supernatural should get my vote, because it's being a really boring tv show for the last 3 seasons, I voted Supernatural because I didn't watch "Revenge". The other poll was very easy, of course "Smallville" :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. SPN ftw :)
Second poll - The West Wing

    ReplyDelete
  45. Never watched The West Wing or Smallville, but I voted for Smallville. And I'm probably going to get a lot of heat for this, but I also voted for Revenge.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Another great thing about Supernatural is its consistency. Through 7 seasons there has never been a terrible season, just the latter two seasons weren't as good as the others. But shows like Buffy and Angel had seasons that were just completely unwatchable when they introduced unnecessary characters and romances that bogged down the drama. I hope the new supernaturalish show, Grimm, keeps it consistent down the road if they don't get cancelled.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Actually I am getting ready to leave for the main part of my vacation in 10 minutes. I will look at your page when I get back to see if I can help.

    ReplyDelete
  48. While I think the last 2 seasons were better than seasons 4 and 5, I agree that SPN has remained consistent in entertainment value. Generally speaking, even the worst episodes of Supernatural for me are better than the majority of what is on TV these days. Really not a fan of reality TV.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I voted for Revenge because it's a great serie and I have never seen supernatural!

    ReplyDelete
  50. too bad the better show out of Super Natural vs. Revenge is gonna get squashed ;( I still voted for Revenge, even though there's no point.

...WHAT...YOU ARE WORKING I think you are in the some beach in bora bora island with the laptop drinking a martini with your soulmate have fun take care ..///O.K.///

    ReplyDelete
  52. I completely accept that Supernatural is a great show but I don't accept when anyone calls Supernatural a little show 'cause, its not. Its popular all around the globe and millions watch it legally and illegally. Many a times this show is mistaken as a little show mainly for two reasons: 1.Because of its low U.S. Ratings - As its on CW and remember Nielsen ratings are not very accurate. 2. Cast and Crew mistakenly thinks, only people attending conventions and people posting online constitute the entire viewership - which is absolutely false. There are lot of people who just watch this show and are not active fans and this number is so huge than anyone can expect.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Supernatural for the first poll. What can I say, SPN has it all - drama, hilarious humour, horror, action, clever lines, a great plot, and best of all, amazing character interactions. There is no better relationship on TV than that of the Winchester brothers. Supernatural makes me laugh, cry, and enjoy.

Smallville for the second. I've been a casual viewer of it,and it is very good.

    ReplyDelete
  54. You are not a fan of Brotherly love of Supernatural, are you? That is why you stopped watching the show abruptly. Season 2 is my most favorite of all the seasons and I hate the season 3 towards the end. Ironically, Lost is the show, I hate the most than all the shows, I have watched so far and it topped your list. We are apparently polar opposites as far as TV shows are concerned.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Agreed. Seeing "The Wire" lose to Gossip Girl has my head spinning, though.

    ReplyDelete
  56. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!! Somebody tell me how Gossip Girl could get more votes than The Wire. The Wire is one of the best of all time. (Along with MASH, NYPD Blue, All in the Family and Hill Street Blues) I know it is just opinion but opinion needs to have a base to support it.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sometimes when one calls something "little" as in this case "a great little show" it's not meant in a bad way . It's meant to be a compliment; to show affection. :)
I am a great admirer of Supernatural and I would certainly not speak against it. :)
    .

    ReplyDelete
  58. Supernatural and Smallville for me!

    ReplyDelete
  59. nellymendezcolon28 June 2012 at 18:46

...///SUPERNATURAL..AND...///SMALLVILLE....LEADING ..IN THERE RESPECTIVE,,POLLS..had to be that way BOTH series are over the top of the word ..//AWESOME.///

    ReplyDelete
  60. No,I never said you are speaking against the show. I know you are a great fan. But. I am just saying, the Great show of Supernatural is no little.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Supernatural is my favorite tv series ever.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Of course, SUPERNATURAL! That's no contest.
    and Smallville

    ReplyDelete
  63. Supernatural without a doubt ;) One of my all time favorite shows!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Not too tough today: I love Revenge, but SPN gets the vote for far more many seasons of entertainment and even though I stopped watching refularly after S3, Smallville gets my vote as well.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I'm a little surprised at myself. I actually voted Revenge, despite being a hardcore Supernatural fan since its pilot. But I honestly believe that, since this is a 2012 poll that I should compare one season to the other and looking at the season as a whole. Revenge has been better this season than *this season* of Supernatural. I know I'm picking the losing horse but...

I'm also a little surprised at myself for voting Smallville. I grew bored with West Wing. Stellar first season but I lost interest after about season two. With Smallville I watched until Lex Luthor stopped being Clark's friend. I had continued to watch the first few seasons of Smallville because the Lex Luthor character and his relationships (with Clark and his father) were so interesting. My problem was that the inevitable change in the Lex/Clark relationship didn't hold up for me in its execution. However the last 2 or 3 seasons have been in rerun on TNT and it's pretty darned good. So, I have to give it my vote.

    So... Revenge and Smallville.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I love today's polls! I voted for Supernatural and Smallville. Two of my favourite shows! :D

    ReplyDelete
  67. Bad luck for Revenge in their maiden duel :/ I wish it hadn't gone against one of the behemoths so early.

    ReplyDelete
  68. antonio dueñas29 June 2012 at 00:50

    Supernatural and Smallville.

    ReplyDelete
  69. The biggest problem has to do with age. They were to young when it was on,probably never watch when they grew up a bit...lots of young uns here.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Oh Dor, you broke my heart!!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Flank why? Oh were you suppose to vote for SPN? I don't think you'll get flogged for it.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I am so sad for West Wing.

Are we just super loyal to WB/CW shows?

    ReplyDelete
  73. No. I just meant that there are a ton of crazy Supernatural fans on this site that might not be pleased that someone voted against their favorite show.

Remember how I was saying about that whack-job Lucy Liu fan? Well, I gave a bad review of an episode of Supernatural last December that was critical about a fan-favorite character (Bobby) that topped it. They almost incinerated me.

I also had a similar run-in with the Castle fans. My review of the last season finale (even though seven people liked it) was received extremely poorly. The episode wasn't well written, the pacing was awful, and the lack of resolution about Beckett's murder was frustrating; but the only thing everyone focused on was that Castle and Beckett had sex at the end.

Looking back, it seems like I've had a lot of experience in writing unpopular minority opinions about shows with cult-like fans. I myself am a "cult-like" fan of Fringe, but have written reviews that go against the general consensus.

Sorry. Didn't mean to go on so long.

    ReplyDelete
  74. No need to apologize you weren't ranting, and you and i very seldom talk. But i can see how you could ruffle some feathers. But as i always say you have a right to your opinion, and to be able to express that opinion whit out having people jumping all over you for it..

    ReplyDelete
  75. Supernatural is my first love on television. Never have I been so hooked or drawn into a series like this one. Even a bad episode of Supernatural, for me, is better then anything else on television. Smallville was a great series and I miss it.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I haven't actually watched the other shows but my votes go to Supernatural, one of my favourite shows and Smallville which I watched for 8 years (I think I caught up to live TV on season 4). Smallville used to freak me out when I first watched it but then again I was probably not even in middle school so it wasn't really meant for me then =P. Despite the very weird story lines at times still a very enjoyable show. Supernatural has a special place in my heart and really no matter how many amazing posts are written about why we love the show, it's still hard to put into words.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Ha! On a ship heading towards a beach drinking a lemonade while typing on a very slow satelite connection at an internet terminal instead of on my new laptop. Still if I don't check in at least twice a day I miss seeingt eh results of this poll and all the juicy Supernatural spoilers coming out these days. Now I couldn't do that!

    ReplyDelete
  78. While Supernatural is indeed popular around the world, so are many, many other shows. My guess from what little I've seen of international ratings, is that SPN is still a small underrated show throughout the world. If CSI is the number one rated show in teh world, my guess is that jsut like in the US, procedural shows do a whole lot better than serialized genre-based shows.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I think even the "crazy" Supernatural fans on this site know you can vote for whomever you want. However, they may take exception to people calling them out on things they are not doing. It seems like people (not just today) are itching to criticize SPN fans in this contest. We can get very contentious on our own threads talking with other SPN fans, but hopefully we would never be upset that someone voted contrary to us much less bother to jump down their throats about it. I would hope the entire contest would be without people sniping at each other or making little jabs.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I would encourage you to try Supernatural. It's not for everyone of course but many people are surprised by how much they like it when they try it. It's available on Netflix streaming if you have that.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Great reasoning. I love how Supernatural has the ability to combine all categories of TV in 42 minutes. Episodes like Mystery Spot and Changing Channels are prime examples of how SPN can get comedy and drama so very right all in the same episode. An episode like A Very Supernatural Christmas shows just how great they are at blending all those elements you listed.

    ReplyDelete
  82. They've won lost of Emmy. No sadness at all.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Gossip Girl is a recent show which already gives it an advantage over The Wire in this contest. Like it or not, current shows almost always prevail. Also Gossip Girl is shown in many different countries whereas The Wire not so much. Finally, while the CW doesn't have a ton of viewers, it is free to watch in the United States while HBO isn't. Yes people could have watched it in recent years via DVD, Netflix or iTunes, but only if they heard the buzz to watch it. Buzz on a show that has been off the air for years is usually minimal. To be honest, I am fairly in touch with TV these days but there are some shows on HBO and Showtime that I still have no idea what they are about and have to look them up when people talk about them. The Wire may suffer from any of these when it comes to number of votes in an online summer contest.

    ReplyDelete
  84. No. Supernatural will win every poll ever.

    ReplyDelete
  85. The ratings aren't going to increase. They are going to diminish but i'm ok with that, we only need to be better than a few shows. And either way if the ratings are really really bad we still are going to have a farewell season.

    ReplyDelete

Supernatural just because it had my heart for so many seasons :) and The West Wing because I enjoyed it more than Smallville

"Supernatural has a special place in my heart and really no matter how

That is such a sweet thought and so true. I myself don't exactly know why I like it so much.
What I do know is that other shows do not draw me in as it does. :)

  90. I was only kidding!

  91. Being optimistic is great, and if it should win great, but its not the be all that ends all. There are some other fine shows past and present that are as worthy as SPN is.

  92. Lol I know, I meant to ask what did I say that made you upset? Was this Supernatural?

    ReplyDelete
  93. No, its not. Most of the times outside U.S.A, its in illegal circulation rather than legal. For instance, I hardly watch Supernatural on my TV and always watch it on my computer. In almost every country of Europe and Australia Supernatural is really famous but most of the times it happens that majority of viewership is illegal. I am not saying that Supernatural is as famous as House MD, The Big Bang Theory or CSI, but proportion of popularity in U.S.A is entirely different from that of other countries. I will not be surprised if Supernatural is as famous as Lost and Fringe.

  94. LOL, I also have a hard time trying to explain just what SPN is and why I love it so much. I usually end up with it is about family that just happens to fight monsters and save the world. I know lame. lol

  95. Oh that dreaded word! :)

  96. I don't think there will be asignificant rise either. However I think it will stay relatively flat, not decrease significantly either. I do agree that there will be a season 9 at the very least.

  97. Supernatural will not win this poll every year. It might win this year after a very long, drawn out and close fight but it won't be easy. People are confusing the first round with much tougher rounds. Being overconfident just makes Supernatural fans sound arrogant and that is something we want to avoid particularly in this contest. The goal is not actually winning. The goal is to get new people to watch the show.

  98. So many shows are downloaded illegally. I can see Supernatural being as famous as Fringe and other genre shows. Still even on the torrent stats I see Supernatural, while being higher than any Nielsen rating by far, is still not in the top 10 shows.

  99. You can't expect more than this from a genre show. According to many people, genre shows are some freaky monster shows that make any sense.

  100. it also makes it difficult to tell people why they should watch the show =P "they fight monsters and it's awesome"

  101. I guess you're right. Kinda reminds me of telling my players we were going to learn how to catch a fly ball with two hands. They just looked at me strangely.

  102. Funny how times change. As a kid I had 3 networks, PBS and a couple UHF channels to watch. Summer vacation sucked when living in the country. Then in my twenties I only watched TV on Saturday and Sunday afternoons for hoops and football. Now I watch Supernatural with my 11 year old special needs son. (He loves it when demons and monsters die!)

Now I'll drive myself crazy trying to analyze the change over the years. I kind of figured the reasons you gave were why. I should have guessed it as I've learned how rabid the Supernatural fandom is. I think it is even stronger than the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" phenomenon from a couple decades ago.

Haven't seen passion like that since.....ever.

  103. Just think, somebody might come along and read this and ask what is a "Rocky Horror Picture Show."

    ReplyDelete
  104. LOL! Yeah, like what is stoup ball,or stick ball! Wait, since your a country boy you might not even know what stoup ball is?

I was just thinking of you, wondering how your doing, and how your back is progressing?

  105. I loved Rocky Horror, that was one very strange movie. lol

  106. AWESOME is the perfect word. ;)

  107. Not getting any better. Last trip to surgeon was pretty much him telling me how bad it was and how lucky I was that I won't need a wheelchair. He told me to stay positive and 9-12 months will tell where I'll be forever. I'm at three and counting.
    Are you feeling better?

    ReplyDelete
  108. Strange indeed! :) I'll never forget my first time sitting there taking it all in,then by the end knowing the words and dancing along with everyone else in the theater. What a good time, strange but good! :)

  109. Oh gee Scott i wish i could remember that segment i saw about the surgery this doctor is doing. It was on the show Sunday Morning, the studies are under way, even doctors are hopeful. I know they are showing repeats i will keep my eye out for it.... I hate when doctors tell you how lucky you are but the fact is they are right,we know it,we don't need for them to tell us that, we want to know how to deal with the pain day in and day out.How to function in everyday actives without the pain wearing us out....Guess i don't need to tell you that, and i guess i just answered your question,lol...

So cool you and your son watching SPN together, made me smile! :)
