Mmm. Does not look good, and apart from the fact that Watson is a woman, Lucy comes over as being totally miscast and looks just out of place. and even a little awkward.
I'm sorry that It isn't more appealing because I love Sherlock Holmes and the more the merrier but this is just not for me. But then what do I know. It might be great sucess!
I love you Johnny, but seriously, this is so wrong that hurts me physically. It's not original or what, it's just a remake of a remake mixed up with an ordinary investigation tv show. I just think of Sir Conan Doyle and I feel sorry, really.
Let me just say first that it is a tremendous accomplishment for the BBC version and the main actor that i am now comparing this Holmes to his, instead of Brett's, which I did up until a year ago. This Holmes is, plain and simple, strange. And, sad to say, a bit weak. But, I survived Charlton Heston playing Holmes, so I will survive this.
By the end of the trailer, i have some hopes for this. Not as Sherlock Holmes, i am going to have to ignore that it has anything to do with that, because it's just not right. But as a standalone series, i would be interested in this i think, interested enough to give it a go.
For some unknown reason Jonny Lee Miller has always made me feel irrationally angry. I shall stick with Sherlock, that way i won't have the constant need to stab myself in the eye with a pencil.
But that is just my personal opinion, i am sure there will a few followers for this.
not sure about this but maybe its just the trailer still though not 100% in for this , i dont know maybe i need to watch the pilot but BBC sherlock seems way too amazing this looks like CSI x Sherlock in one
I'm a big fan of the BBC version, and I really can't stand this... THING. I mean, Watson is a fucking man, and Miller... come on, he just can't be Sherlock. He has nothing of Sherlock. And the name... "Elementary" Really? I hope this thing won't work. I really hope so, because it's fucking ridiculous.
Do you hear that whirring sound? It's Sir Arthur Conan Doyle spinning in his grave.
I was initially a little interested in this show but I don't know now. It just looks like another procedural + an accent. I don't think I'll watch this one.
Feels like some exec just grabbed a pilot script for an unmade procedural series, changed the names to Sherlock and Watson with a ball point pen and fired it off to be shot. I hope this fails miserably.
I'm kinda looking forward to this more and more. Unlike most I really like the idea that they made Watson a female. I think that will shake things up as long as she doesn't become a love interest for Holmes. If it had been a male Watson it would have been very bland for sure. I am a fan of the BBC version and don't think this will be nowhere near as good but I like the differences I have seen so far so I will give it a shot.
Okay, seriously, am I the only one who doesn't this find this horrible? It's nothing like that blessed BBC series, and I'm all for it, because it offers a different approach to the characters. And they have the talent with Miller and Liu, I just pray for the writers to really put their back on it, because this could be good if they really go for it.
I am a big fan of the BBC version (seriously, that shit is a masterpiece) But this one could be good (it will probably not, but it could be good); I don't think that the concept is intrinsically flawed, the execution might fail, but even if it's half as good as the BBC version, it would so majorly better the landscape of current american television.
What stands out in terms of Sherlock Holmes for me is his utter familiarity with where he is. I mean, he can see a soil sample and tell which part of the city its from. This guy is from England and now he is New York solving cases? He doesn't know the law, he doesn't know how things work there. His deductions can't be informed by his knowledge about the city and the people in it. I don't really see this is a true Sherlock Holmes adaptations. It didn't seem the like the case was familiar with it too.
I hear you! I don't see as a true adaption either, how could it really? As they said in the clip, its the New Sherlock Holmes. I going to watch because i like Johnny L.Miller and last season when LL was in Southland i really liked her in it. I never cared for anything else she did,but seeing her in SL she really made an impression on me.So if the show is unwatchable i will have wasted an hour...
A few observations: - Mmkay. This is about what I expected. - Combine Greg House and Patrick Jane, give him an accent and you have what CBS considers Sherlock Holmes. - Good supporting cast. - This is nothing like Sherlock Holmes but, for the CBS audience, it's probably better this way. - I'm glad Lucy Liu is finally starting to get some TV roles that aren't pigeon-holing her. Southland helped with that problem too. - Whatever this Frankenstein is, it's got a better shot than the rest of this years dramas. - This is exactly the sort of cookie-cutter, homogenized pap that the CBS audience goes for. It may not win any Emmys but it may draw viewers. - CBS basically replaced The Mentalist on Thursdays with another version of The Mentalist.
To all of those people waving your "BBC Sherlock" flags, there are a few things you should know: 1. - CBS doesn't care about your show. (nor should they) 2. - The vast majority of the TV watching public in the US also doesn't care about your show or know it exists. 3. - You are right. This is NOT Sherlock Holmes. This is a modern day reimagining of the character that allows the writers to do whatever the hell they want with him, so you shouldn't expect it to be anything close to the Sherlock Holmes you know. 4. - Sherlock is still on the air and in production so there is absolutely no reason why the presence of this show should matter to you at all, especially since these aren't competing projects.
This doesn't even look like Sherlock Holmes - it just looks like they took the names Holmes and Watson so they could jump on the bandwagon. It have been more appealing if they hadn't based it on Holmes and just marketed it as another 'Mentalist' type show. I do want Jonny Lee Miller to have a hit - but this doesn't look like it.
I just realized something. If this show is on the air long enough it will be the only version of Sherlock Holmes where he eventually has sex with Watson! XD
Even though it strikes me as a House solving crimes, I might just give this a look due to the cast with Rutger Hauer and Lucy L and her wonderful turn on "Southland" ... This also reminds me of another show that CBS had on a few season ago, "Eleventh Hour" that I rather enjoyed ,and turns out was another adaptation of a BBC show...
I suppose it depends on how you're looking at it. If you want to say that Sherlock Holmes is the inspiration for the modern day barrage of brilliant, quirky detective shows, then Sherlock Holmes has been responsible for a phenomenon that has been going strong for the better part of two decades.
I actually really liked it! I still need to watch the British Sherlock, so I can't really compare the different versions, but I liked Jonny Lee Miller. He's like the police-version of House. It's also great to see Lucy Liu on television!
From the Promo of Elementary, i can see the Johnny Miller ( great actor) & Lucy Liu will do great. But i think the surrounding cast, isn't going to solidify the two major characters. I'll still watch the pilot, to see where this leads to. Where is Mycroft Holmes? 22 episodes is a lot, whats the story going to be throughout the season, i have a feeling there will be lots of filler episodes. Elementary looks decent, ok writing, the production & directing looks average. But that could change. To me the BBC is spectacular, amazing writing, amazing cinematography, amazing supporting cast, amazing everything. Overall Elementary might be a bust or a hit. We will have to wait and see.
Predictable, I really hope for the sake of all thing scarred bout British legendary story telling that this piece of bull does NOT come to florition. If any sane human being wants to see Sherlock done so irrefutably genius please see the BBC's Sherlock. This is just another attempt to bank roll on a classic. SHame on you!
A lot of very good points that I do agree with you on. I've never seen the Mentalist, but I've been wanting to start watching it and based on all the comments here, now I really want to start watching it. I really like the points you made about the BBC thing. I totally agree that CBS doesn't care. They never do care about those things, as they probably shouldn't. The 2nd and 3rd points you're making about the BBC version are both very true and very important. I barely knew that BBC existed and that there was a Sherlock show on it. About the 3rd point, I think many of the people commenting here are failing to see that CBS isn't trying to simply rip off of an idea or concept that's already been done. They are trying to reimagine it as much as they think is necessary for it to do well while keeping the fundamental concept of Sherlock Holmes. My biggest concern is the casting of Lucy Liu as Watson. Having Watson be a woman is already a big difference, but also in that promo something didn't quite feel right. I'm not sure if she was the right choice to cast for that role. I do know this: this show is going to have a hell of a lead-in to support it. TBBT, followed by TAAHM, followed by POI, and then this? If this show fails it won't be because of poor lead in support. It has one of the strongest lead-ins that I've ever seen.
I'm a little disappointed. I was really looking forward to this, now I'm not so sure, it's missing something. I'll watch the pilot just in case this was a bad trailer but it'll have to be REALLY good to get me to stick around.
I like Lucy Liu's Watson but Miller's Sherlock...meh... maybe they should have gone for a female Sherlock as well. Sherlock comes across like a lost puppy in this preview...
Now THAT'S what i was trying to put my finger on! He comes across like a lost puppy, so true, and Sherlock should have a shell most of the time, a somewhat impenetrable aloofness... Ahwell, no matter, they will take it in a different direction and i'm okay with that, we'll see what happens.
for me they are using the same formula of Castle or The mentalist, i dont know it doesnt feel like something original or different than some of the shows we have on the air now
idk with you guys, but the quirky camera angles (ie the scene where they were talking to a lady) was really remiscent of BBC's Sherlock. He's even got a scarf for chrissss sake. And don't get me started on that title screen.
It's bad enough that they stole the idea from BBC but also copying the style? My my, so dissapointing.
But then again, I think I'll go ahead watch the pilot and see how it goes. Really curios how this show is going to come into full circle.
It's not only the male=genius but also the eccentric aspect, childlike in a way, that I point out. I never watched Bones, but I think the main female character is quite the serious one or am I wrong? If so, I will give it a try just for that :-)
Usually, males on tv shows are the childlike eccentric who are funny, don't give a damn about social conventions and are somehow irresponsible while the female is the "feet on the ground" responsible one, she take care of the childlike genius.
ex: mulder/scully; Jane/Lisbon, Walter Bishop/Olivian Dunham, Castle/Becket, dr who and her companion ... and so on
I like a lot of those shows, but It would be cool to see the gender roles reversed once in a while.
In Bones yes most of the time Brennan is serious but she's also childlike in a way (she has a kind of innocence) and you could definitely describe her as "eccentric". She also does not care much or even understand most social conventions, often hilariously misunderstands common phrases or pop culture references, says things in a very blunt and tactless manner, etc. However, she is quite a responsible person, and she mostly has her life together. So it's kind of a blend. In the case of Bones, her partner Booth serves the role you describe, he kind of teaches/helps her how to be more "human", emotional, observe social conventions, etc. You should check it out because it very much does reverse the gender roles a bit in the way you describe. :)
I will check it out. A character who has a kind of innocence, but is blunt, tactless and doesn't understand social conventions (like personal space) or reference (Who is Glenn Close?) is definitively my kind of character if you know what I mean ;-D thanks to George and you :-)

looks bad
ReplyDeleteLooks eh, Jonny Lee Miller is awesome but was there really a need to make Watson a woman?
ReplyDeleteOh Jonny Lee Miller I love you but your Sherlock is making me head desk
ReplyDeleteNo no no no no no. Just no. BBC's Sherlock is so much better than this.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what to think about it, so I will definitely check it.
ReplyDeleteMmm.
ReplyDeleteDoes not look good, and apart from the fact that Watson is a woman, Lucy comes over as being totally miscast and looks just out of place. and even a little awkward.
I'm sorry that It isn't more appealing because I love Sherlock Holmes and the more the merrier but this is just not for me.

BBC called, they want their franchise back.

Well I will be watching for Lucy Liu.So hopefully she Is given some good stuff to do.

ReplyDeleteLooks completely bland compared to BBC's Sherlock. Not even worth getting mad about.
ReplyDeleteAnother excentric genius outsider male teaming up with a good in his job no-nosense female.
ReplyDeleteIs there a show where the woman is the excentric outsider genius?
They tryin' to me watch this Sherlock, but I say
ReplyDeleteSir Arthur Conan Doyle just rolled over n his grave....

This new version of Sherlock, looks like a new version of Castle.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to at least check it out!

they have just ruined Sherlock forever
ReplyDeleteRemember when they made Starbuck a woman?? That turned out pretty awesome IMO.
ReplyDeleteDo you still plan on watching BBC's Sherlock? Then it's not ruined forever.
ReplyDeleteIt's called Bones.

ReplyDeleteLooks cool but lets face it this is what it would look like if Monk and The Mentalist had a baby show.
ReplyDeleteI would hope Jonny Lee Miller has a wonderful British accent... he is British! XD
ReplyDeleteThen again there are a few Brits that sound so "foreign" to me whenever they speak in their natural accent and not the American accent I'm used to! XD
Holmes has had a revival with the movies (terrible) and BBC series (brilliant) and is more popular now than at least the last 30 years... maybe more.
ReplyDeleteMeh. Two films (one of which bombed) and one foreign TV show is a shaky bandwagon. Revival, as you mentioned, is a good word for it though.
ReplyDeleteYeah it certainly is not a phenomena like Twilight/ Vampires was a few years ago when vampires were everywhere in TV and film.
ReplyDeleteThen again, I guess it is easier to be a phenomena like that when it is a genre like vampires and not a specific entity like Sherlock Holmes.
I suppose it depends on how you're looking at it. If you want to say that Sherlock Holmes is the inspiration for the modern day barrage of brilliant, quirky detective shows, then Sherlock Holmes has been responsible for a phenomenon that has been going strong for the better part of two decades.
ReplyDeleteHa lol..... :D still chuckling
ReplyDeleteI do like Jonny Lee Miller but I'm really concerned that they will turn this into a romantic tension thing and that will just do my head in!
ReplyDeleteI actually really liked it! I still need to watch the British Sherlock, so I can't really compare the different versions, but I liked Jonny Lee Miller. He's like the police-version of House. It's also great to see Lucy Liu on television!

ReplyDeleteI like Lucy Liu's Watson but Miller's Sherlock...meh... maybe they should have gone for a female Sherlock as well. Sherlock comes across like a lost puppy in this preview...
ReplyDeleteLol! Your first two sentences made me snortle. :P
ReplyDeleteEh?? It looks nothing like Castle!
ReplyDeleteI live in England and his English accent is fine - nothing weird about it at all, perfectly normal for many areas here.
ReplyDeleteNow THAT'S what i was trying to put my finger on! He comes across like a lost puppy, so true, and Sherlock should have a shell most of the time, a somewhat impenetrable aloofness... Ahwell, no matter, they will take it in a different direction and i'm okay with that, we'll see what happens.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see the trailer as I was not interested in the series, having seen the trailer I am now defintiely not going to bother watching.
ReplyDeletefor me they are using the same formula of Castle or The mentalist, i dont know it doesnt feel like something original or different than some of the shows we have on the air now
ReplyDeleteStill not interested in this. I prefer the BBC version. Watson a woman (just so they can give them UST) and taking place in the States? No thanks.
ReplyDeleteAnd not all Brits speak so nicely. It is wonderful to listen to him. I still don't think I'll watch this show, though.
ReplyDeleteidk with you guys, but the quirky camera angles (ie the scene where they were talking to a lady) was really remiscent of BBC's Sherlock. He's even got a scarf for chrissss sake. And don't get me started on that title screen.

meh, looks like stuff already airing and not as good. Will pass on this one
ReplyDeleteIt's not only the male=genius but also the eccentric aspect, childlike in a way, that I point out.
ReplyDeleteI never watched Bones, but I think the main female character is quite the serious one or am I wrong? If so, I will give it a try just for that :-)

I like a lot of those shows, but It would be cool to see the gender roles reversed once in a while.
hmm its an interesting twist on an old story.....not sure till i see the pilot
ReplyDeleteIn Bones yes most of the time Brennan is serious but she's also childlike in a way (she has a kind of innocence) and you could definitely describe her as "eccentric". :)
ReplyDeleteHe's not Scottish. He was born and grew up in London. He can do a very very good Scottish accent which is why you may think that.
ReplyDeleteI will check it out.
ReplyDeleteA character who has a kind of innocence, but is blunt, tactless and doesn't understand social conventions (like personal space) or reference (Who is Glenn Close?) is definitively my kind of character if you know what I mean ;-D
thanks to George and you :-)
Ha ha yes. I was actually just talking with someone the other day about how Castiel is basically the male version of Bones. She even says "I don't know what that means" all the time which is kind of like Cas's "I don't understand that reference". :P
ReplyDelete:-D
ReplyDeletejust added Season one of bones on my summer agenda ;-)
this is not the sherlock you are looking for *wave hand* :-D
ReplyDeleteOn Elementary Watson isn't military, wasn't wounded, Sherlock and Watson didn't found each other by chance, Watson didn't help Holmes to struggle with his addiction.... Hello!!! THAT'S NOT SHERLOCK HOLMES. That's only another procedural using a famous character name. Let me guess, we are going to see UST between them?? Don't count on me watching this!!!!
ReplyDelete
