Gossip Girl - Season 6 - Likely but Shortened Season

15 Mar 2012

Gossip Girl" will likely be renewed for a shortened sixth and final season, according to an individual close to the production.

The CW drama is expected to return for a reduced number of episodes like fellow CW drama "One Tree Hill" did for its final season, the individual said.

A spokesman for the network said that CW has not yet made a decision about picking up any of its scripted shows for next year.

Given its low ratings, the show is seen as perpetually on the bubble. "Gossip Girl" averaged 1.7 million viewers, and a 1.9 rating in the women 18-34 demo, this year. That's a far cry from the 2.35 million viewers the show averaged in its debut season.

  1. I feel Gossip Girl has run its natural course and a shortened final season I think is the way to go just to wrap things up and say goodbye.

  2. There's not much to wrap up, it's not like it's a complex show.  The show pretty much revolves around stale, repetitive, contrived relationship drama that completely undermines the characters and their development/growth (or lack of one in this case).

    how and where?

  4. I'd expected this. This bad ratings wouldn't go unnoticed by the CW. This is at least better than the rumored full season pick up

  5. they mean Live+7 those are live+SD so the numbers they are talking about includes DVR Numbers too

  6. I think they're referring to the 18-34 demos or dvr or whatever, Gossip Girl is still performing badly.

  7. The CW clearly doesn't care about ratings or common sense for that matter seeing as how they've already renewed America's Next Top Model.

  8. Chuck had a reduced final season and that worked out well for them. It forces the writers to not waste time on boring, pointless stories  e.g. royal wedding/ Nate plus random guest star and hopefully helps them focus on wrapping up the character arcs in a satisfying way.

  9. ok. so they compared the numbers from the 5th season, and you say they count dvr numbers as well, with numbers from the first and those numbers aren't + dvr numbers. i'm not from US so i don't know, did you use dvrs in 2007-08? but either way dvr numbers are useless, and the show deserves to be cancelled (and i'm the one who still watches it :/)

  10. The difference is that Chuck actually had storylines to wrap up, not to mention a lot of people pretty much dropped the show for that season after it was dumped and burned off on Fridays.  Gossip Girl would be more of the same until it finally ends.  There will be more pointless stories/contrivances to create unnecessary drama and pad the show out much longer than it needed it to.

  11. Yes, it certainly does deserve to be canceled, but what do you expect from incompetent morons who renewed America's Next Top Model, which turned out to be a flop, and has a new reality show coming out in the summer about musical chairs?

    ReplyDelete
  12.  True, I guess it's just wishful thinking on my part that the writers could  focus on the character stuff and less on stupid OMFG moments.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Unfortunate, it'll be more of that.  We're still going to be stuck with Josh Safran and the writers' incompetence.

  14.  Haha, what? You're not on pins and needles waiting to see what couples come out ENDGAME?

(Gawd, I wish I could suss out the jerkass who started floating that around as a shipper term...)

  15. well they can't cancel everything, even though every show with exception of tvd and supernatural (and maybe 90210) deserves that fate. btw i will never watch SS and JS's shows, never again, i have learned my lesson :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. They don't have to cancel everything, they can keep shows like The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural, as well as 90210 since it's at least stable.

There's a reason Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage left this sinking ship of a show.

    ReplyDelete
  17. No, but that's 1 of the show's biggest problem, it began catering to petty, immature ship wars and they had to create terribly contrived relationship drama.

    ReplyDelete
  18. This is what I figured would happen, and honestly I think they're lucky they're getting anything at all.  Still, I'm glad.  It'll give them a chance to wrap things up well (I hope), and hopefully they'll go out in style like Chuck did  :)

  19. dont blame it on Schrwartz and Savage a blame safran since hes showrunner when schwartz and savage where in charge Gossip Girl was very good they understood the ships, the storylines and cgaracters better then Safran does hes the one who destroyed the show not savage and schwartz

  20. i didnt see season 1 compared DVR Numbers just season 5 they dont have info for season 1 just season 5 right now

  21. Chuck was dumped on Fridays and burned off its' remaining episodes, interest in the show itself pretty much declined until the finale itself.

What exactly is there to wrap up in Gossip Girl?  Chuck actually had storylines to wrap up, all Gossip Girl has is repetitive, stale, contrived relationship drama that goes around in circles.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm not blaming it on them, I'm just saying there's a reason they left in the 1st place.

Josh Safran is just an incompetent moron who deserves to be unemployed.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm honestly not that interested in how viewership changed or declined for Chuck in its final season - since I knew it was ending, and ratings were essentially meaningless, I was able to just enjoy the show.  And I think they did a great job with the time that they had left - I think it got back some of the spark that it had been missing, and I'm glad they decided to go out with a bang.  Gossip Girl could certainly use some life breathed back into it.  That's what I'm saying - they'll be put in a similar position, and hopefully they can use it to their advantage to restore a bit of what made people enjoy it in the first place.

And as far as wrapping up Gossip Girl goes, no, there may not be any huge, mysterious stories to tie up, but it would be good to work toward some semblance of closure.  It does go in circles, and the book never seems to be closed on any particular issue, especially when it comes to relationships.  I REALLY wish they'd stop with the ridiculous relationship drama - but that may be asking too much with this show.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That's the problem.  Gossip Girl has nothing else to offer but contrived, repetitive relationship drama.  Chuck actually had real storylines to explore/wrap up, Gossip Girl has nothing new or interesting left.  The show has already ran dry of new ideas, it's just repeating terrible storylines like the stupid Royal relationship crap, Serena has yet another half/step-sibling, more back/forth crap that has gone completely stale, etc.  I'm not even talking about mysteries, there's nothing new/interesting left to explore.  The writers are just making ridiculous things up and recycling old, tired ideas over and over again.  The books were much more interesting compared to how the show is at this point.

  25.  They are referring to the 18-34 demo. I was just at a function with Les Moonves - president of CBS - and he specifically referenced Gossip Girl as being a show that is hurt by traditional Neilsen ratings because its primary demo - university students - watch online - where dvr and C+3 numbers make a HUGE difference in the numbers.

  26. The thing that i was waiting... Its time to say goodbye to GG, and nothing better than one more season to give the series an epic finale!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I was hoping a final season would be shortened. I want a proper final season, but not necessarily a full 22-episode one. I honestly figured that they would do this with the ratings being what they are, but we'll have to wait and see what they officially do...

  28. What upsets me most, is how serious people take this show. I hear people
say it dipped in quality or stopped being interesting as if it was ever
anything more than a silly show about attractive rich kids hooking up.
There was never a dip in quality or creativeness because the show has
always been the same. It stayed true to itself and it's honestly a joke
to try and say it was ever more than that. I like the show, don't get me
wrong, but I know it's a guilty pleasure silly show and that's why I
like it. Because I can just enjoy the characters and the overly
ridiculous situations they end up in. It's fun and i'll be happy to see it wrap up however the writer's choose to do so.

  29. I have no problem with shows being given reduced final seasons to wrap things up.  Much prefer they did that then cancelled it with no chance to wrap up stories.  Not too bothered about GG as I don't watch it, but I do like the concept in general.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Well, I'm really surprised by this ......NOT.
Seriously, I doubt they'll even get a full 10 episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah that's just plain stupid , but I do like the idea of series with about 13 episodes. They should do this for more series on the CW

    ReplyDelete
  32.  Nah, It'd be more-so 13 for a shortened season.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Sounds like a sencible move for the show and the network.

    ReplyDelete
  34. What exactly do they have to wrap up.The writers merygoround with relationships what does It matter
If It ends this season Instead of addational 13 episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I guess it is better than no season renewal at all.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The only real thing they have left is revealing who Gossip Girl is. Which I assume is just going to be Kristen Bell at the end of the final episode winking at the camera while she runs over most of the cast with a limo. (a girl can dream)

  37. Do you think the reason of bad Ringer ratings is Dair? *rme*

    ReplyDelete
  38.  lolz. Of course it is. Dair is to blame for all the bad ratings on the CW. Their 10 minutes of screentime in a 45 minute episode is killing the show!!

    ReplyDelete
  39.  I think it's all a matter of taste. I don't think the writers are bad. I've been a JS/SS fan since The O.C. These people have gone to a great amount to have the jobs that they do and this is what they've chosen to do, so to say that they should be fired or should just find a different career field because you don't like the way they write the show doesn't make sense to me. It's extreme and irrational to say. If you're dissatisfied with their performance on the show, then just rant/vent about that instead of saying they should be fired/completely leave their career field. Someone could not like the way DarkUFO runs this site, but does that mean he should be fired? No, cause it doesn't make sense.

  40. You obviously don't watch the show if you think that's the case, gossip girl has done a tremendous job of creating real characters that we love and root for, despite it's seemingly superficial subject matter.
