-Ratings Breakdown:
The huge news at NBC, no doubt, is The Voice, which led the network to Monday overnight victory with a dominant 9.8 rating/15 share from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, that beat the year-ago combination of scripted dramas Chuck (3.4/ 5 on 2/14/11) and The Cape (2.3/ 4) by a whopping 244 percent. And it was just eight percent below its Monday return one week earlier (10.6/16 on Feb. 6), which translated into 17.84 million viewers and a 6.7 rating/17 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day results. Congratulations, NBC…you have a bona fide hit.
Here is the half-hour breakdown:
The Voice (NBC)
8:00 p.m.: 9.1/14 (#1)
8:30 p.m.: 9.7/14 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 10.3/15 (#1)
9:30 p.m.: 10.2/15 (#1)
Week two of NBC musical drama Smash lost noticeable steam, however, with a third-place 5.7/10 in the overnights at 10 p.m. The positive news remains the time period improvement, with the 5.7 almost double the lackluster 2.9 time period average this season (courtesy of The Playboy Club, repeats of Prime Suspect and Rock Center With Brian Williams). But Smash dipped by 26 percent from its week-ago debut (7.7/13 on Feb. 6). Retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of The Voice was lacking at 56 percent. And Smash dropped by 15 percent in the second-half hour (6.2/10 to 5.3/ 9). One year earlier, older-skewing Harry’s Law was equal in the overnights (but Smash will, of course, perform better in the younger demos).
If Smash settles in now, NBC could still have something here. But if there is more erosion in subsequent weeks, this could be a potential issue. Stay tuned.
Despite the increased competition, CBS was equal to its Monday overnight average from one year earlier with its line-up of How I Met Your Mother (#2: 6.7/10), 2 Broke Girls (#2: 7.5/11), Two and a Half Men (#2: 8.7/13), Mike & Molly (#2: 7.7/11) and Hawaii Five-O, which won the 10 p.m. hour with a 6.6/11. Season to-date, Two and a Half Men is still on the plus side year-to-year. But compared to the year-ago evening last night (9.6/15 on 2/14/11), it was down by nine percent.
In the battle of ABC’s The Bachelor versus The Voice on NBC, relationship mumbo-jumbo takes a clear backseat. But a 5.9/ 9 for The Bachelor from 8-10 p.m. is only 11 percent below one year earlier (6.6/10 on 2/14/11). It will, however, be interesting to see what happens when Dancing With the Stars returns in March. Expect the Monday HUT levels to explode.
Here is the half-hour breakdown:
The Bachelor (ABC)
8:00 p.m.: 5.9/ 9 (#3)
8:30 p.m.: 5.8/ 9 (#3)
9:00 p.m.: 5.8/ 9 (#3)
9:30 p.m.: 6.2/ 9 (#3)
At 10 p.m., Castle closed the evening for ABC with a second-place 6.1/10, which was three percent above the 5.9/10 on 2/14/11.
Elsewhere, something has to give and recently introduced drama Alcatraz on Fox dipped to a series-low 4.2/ 6 in the overnights at 9 p.m. One year earlier, short-lived crime solver Chicago Code was stronger at a 5.2/ 8. Earlier in the evening on Fox was soon-to-conclude House at a fourth-place 4.8/ 7, which was 28 percent below the 6.7/10 on 2/14/11. Yes, it makes sense for House to call it quits.
As always, The CW could not compete with its line-up of Gossip Girl (#5: 1.1/ 2) and freshman Hart of Dixie (#5: 1.2/ 2).

Alcatraz isn't looking good. Would it be cruel to root against it so Fringe can get a 13 episode final season?
ReplyDeleteDisapointed Alcatraz's ratings are falling so badly.
ReplyDeleteThey should never have killed the Chicago Code they were still finding there footing but it was getting interesting. I must say i didn't expect the dip in Alcatraz, but with The Voice and CBS going strong Fox might not be able to afford letting Alcatraz keep its own storytelling pace....
ReplyDeleteGO CASTLE! Please note that Castle built UP from it's Bachelor lead-in. YAY!
ReplyDeleteIt'll be interesting to see the A18-49 ratings especially for the 10pm shows
ReplyDeleteAm I the only who can't the number of viewers ?
ReplyDeleteHouse is making lousy numbers this season. They shouldn´t have let Lisa Edelstein go.
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't. I think Alcatraz will turn out to be a great show, but now between Alcatraz and Fringe...I'd choose Fringe, cause it deserves to be finnished properly. Since Alcatraz won't have much time to evolve, there won't be any regrets about its cancellation.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you. With Alcatraz's ratings dropping like this, if it came down to Fringe vs. Alcatraz, there is no universe where I wouldn't choose to keep Fringe.
ReplyDeleteI can really see SMASH falling down and down and down and getting cancelled at the end. Sure, it's still too early to say, but this show just isn't really for everybody (I for one begin to LOVE it, just like Glee) and the ratings will reflect that.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't posted them yet.
ReplyDeleteIt would, because I don't believe it's a situation of "Alcatraz OR Fringe"...I think at this point Fringe is just not doing well AT ALL in the ratings. Whether or not they cancel Alcatraz, I don't think it'll help Fringe's prospects...
ReplyDeleteOf course I could be wrong. Fringe has always been the lucky one in times like these...
My opinion is that Alcatraz was doing fine before the Voice premiered, and I think that if they want to save this series, they need to get rid of The Finder (whcih gets worse ratings fter AMERICAN IDOL than Alcatraz gets) and slide Alcatraz there for the rest of the season, Or until Touch comes out. House really is crumbling against NBC atm....
ReplyDeleteAlso, It's not good at all that people are dropping like flies over at The Voice+Smash. I think they need to change it up a bit. No one likes to watch a 2-hour singing show anymore, American Idol even cut down on its time...if they want to keep the audience up, they should soon switch to hour-long episodes, with smash at 9, and something else new at 10, so that they don't erode in the ratings so fast.
The ratings dropped even with her on board last season. I doubt House would do better with her. Get it already she left for her own reasons, nobody from TPTB wanted her to leave the show.
ReplyDeleteI totally see your point, but I'm not sure it will make a difference.
ReplyDeleteFringe is doing badly and honestly probably won't ever improve ratings wise after it's fourth season. I think its survival is solely about the potential cost cutting next year. If all parties can come together on a budget point I think FOX will renew it gladly... and maybe not just 13 episodes!
Honestly though, I like Alcatraz after 6 episodes more than I liked Fringe after 6 episodes. Which is why I expect Alcatraz to get cancelled! XD
I don't believe in "Alcatraz or Fringe" either. But since Alcatraz is bombing and House is going down (we don't know how Touch will do in the Alcatraz slot), hopefully FOX will decide to stick with an established show (even if it under performs) and give it a proper ending.
ReplyDeleteCastle's a bit lower than I'd like to see.
ReplyDelete0.5 for Gossip Girl. That's Dair for you.
Hahaha. Goodbye Gossip Girl indeed. LOL
ReplyDeleteoops his like instead of reply. Dair has nothing to do with the low rating for GG. It's an old argument which does not hold up.
ReplyDelete'Terra Nova will survive.' Alcatraz will not. Fringe only in one universe (which one, hopefully ours! :D )
ReplyDeleteDifferent numbers. One is the early Household numbers the other is the 18-49 demo rating.
ReplyDeleteGossip Girl's ratings have gotten worse and worse on its' own.
ReplyDeleteIf CW is dumb enough to renew this crap instead of actually trying to fix their network and appeal to other demographics, then they all deserve to go down.
What is going on with Castle? Before the break it was normally best in it's time slot but since it came back it's been down. Should we be worried with those numbers?
ReplyDeleteAlcatraz is pulling in better number than Terra Nova did.It might not survive, but i wouldn't say Terra Nova is a sure in..
ReplyDeleteI wanted her to leave. I hated huddy and apparently so did many other viewers who stopped watching House when it became the huddy show. It's too bad that a lot of those viewers they lost over the past couple seasons didn't come back for season 8. The show is so much better than it had been for the past 2 or even 3 years.
ReplyDeleteWell Castle isn't doing as well as it normally does,Smash must be drawing away some viewers..
ReplyDeleteI believe it was on the decline before Smash even premiered.
ReplyDeleteI believe TN hit a low of 2.1 and Alcatraz has just hit a 1.9 so while TN is doing better there is still a huge possibility FOX will just cancel both.
ReplyDeleteOkay FOX how about give Fringe one last season for us! One Tree Hill got one, how about you?!
ReplyDeleteIf Smash stays above a 2.0 chances are it will get a second season. NBC cant afford to cancel any show hitting above a 2.0 its already got too many shows under.
ReplyDeleteWhen the full ratings table i will look, honestly i forget, but i thought it was higher. Thanks for letting me know... :P
ReplyDeleteAnyone else notice Gossip Girl gets the same In demo as Nikita this week and was even lower In overall
ReplyDeletethan Nikita last friday? If Gossip Girl slips to where Nikita Is at on friday that may help Nikita's chances
of another season.By ratings you could make case CW would be better off axing Gossip Girl and keeping Hart of Dixie. With Vampire Diaries safe the CW show I would like to see saved Is Nikita.
I DVRed Gossip Girl last night for Michelle Trachtenberg.Shipper wars have nothing to do with Gossip Girl's ratings at this point. As I said In another thread fans of dan and Blair beter enjoy seeing them together while they can.Knowing these producers In a few epiosdes she will be back with Chuck.
Kind of really bummed about Alcatraz, it's one of the few shows of the season I've actually enjoyed and so far stuck with which alas typically means its ratings end up being dire.
ReplyDeleteFeel quite sorry for Smash as well I hope somehow its audience can grow.
OK. It's just that numbers talk more to me than %ages.
ReplyDeleteThe difference is the lead in - Dancing with the Stars vs. The Bachelor. The Bachelor is not the same type of viewer as Castle - at least I hope it's not since I think the Bachelor is mindless drivel. It looks like Castle did better than last year according to the analysis. There is always a dip this time of year because of the break between Dancing with the Stars seasons. The new season of DWTS starts March 19, Castle should see a bounce then.
ReplyDeleteIf the CW doesn't cancel Gossip Girl and gets rid of some their good shows instead, I swear to god...
ReplyDeleteMany Chair fans are already starting to petition to cancel this awful show.
ReplyDeleteIf CW had any sense, they should start to clean house and appeal to other demographics, otherwise they will continue to sink further.
You would be correct...Castle always does better with Dancing with the Stars as a lead in. This happens every year to Castle ratings when the Bachelor is on. You think ABC would take a hint.
ReplyDeleteOnly I'm not so sure it will maintain that. I can see the demo going down, because most teenagers just can't relate to SMASH (unlike Glee, for example). I'm still hoping for SMASH to be a hit, but I'm not really that optimistic right now.
ReplyDeleteI actually don't see that happening. They won't cancel both of their new genre shows... At least for TN I still have a glimpse of hope, so FOX can say "see, we didn't spend a whole lotta money on one season full of shit, content-wise, cost-wise and rating-wise".
ReplyDeleteAlthough I really do see potential for TN to improve over the course of a second season.
For FRINGE, I'm little optimistic. But I wouldn't be surprised if they give us a last mid-season fifth Season to conclude the series.
You know it amazes me how popular singing shows are these days. We had/currently have American Idol, then there was/is America's Got Talent (which is like AI with other acts in addition to singing), now we have the X Factor which is so similar to AI it's ridiculous, and now the Voice. Honestly, how many do they need? I like and watch AI and AGT. I stopped watching the X Factor last season after one of the audition episodes where Simon let a guy through who was terrible. I've never seen the Voice, but I've seen enough promos for it to know what it's about. It's like NBC's attempt to copy AI. It's going to be really interesting to see how well The Voice and Smash can maintain their ratings over the next 3-4 weeks since there's no Super Bowl to use as a huge promotion platform and the competition will remain very strong. I also hope Alcatraz survives. When I saw the promo for it I thought it looked good and although I haven't had time to watch it yet, I'm trying to find the time. It was like Person of Interest. The moment I saw the first promo for that I could tell it was going to be good and it is. I can't get enough of it right now.
ReplyDeleteIm disappointed in Alcatraz's ratings. I think its an awesome show, and Im really hoping it sticks around for a while
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be surprised, CW is incompetent, their poor decision making is what got them into this mess and they will continue to decline like they deserve to.
ReplyDeleteYes i know, that is why i figured that since Smash is similar, plus it has a younger demographic then DWTS,it has to be attracting viewers..
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be surprised either. But still. It hurts that they'll probably ax Nikita or something and keep GG. It's such an anemic performer but they just cling to it.
ReplyDeleteAw, I hate that Alcatraz isn't doing so well!
ReplyDeleteWTF?!? What the hell happened with Castle last night? O.o
ReplyDelete6 SEASONS and a MOVIE.
ReplyDelete(OR 5 seasons with 10-13 eps?)
A whole 1.0 reduction for Smash means it is NOT a Smash at all. I hope it can stabilize...
ReplyDelete:) Firefly got a movie, and it did a lot worse than Fringe.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't worry, "rival show" or similar show Glee did the same. Premiered Strong dropped significanlty for weeks then stabalized towards the end. Though it may not be any comparison since Glee has hit a whole new low this year. I'm hopeful that Smash will find it's niche and I think hopefully 8-9 mil will be it's average. I do want the show to last because it has amazing production value and on par story telling with a cable show.
ReplyDeleteI hope that's what happens. Glee (before people started to hate it, apparently) went up to the 5.0s last season, and that would be a good trend to follow for Smash.
