Oh, those poor Supernatural boys.
This season, the Winchesters have lost their beloved Impala, their friend Castiel and now their only remaining “family” member (RIP Bobby). But where did Bobby go? How will Cas come back? And is Sam about to lose his last marble? TVLine went to executive producer Sera Gamble to get answers — and dish about this week’s time-travel adventure (airing Friday at 9/8c)!
TVLINE | You ended the fall finale with the Reaper posing a pretty big question to Bobby. But then with last week’s episode, you didn’t address that question. Why did you decide to go in that direction?
In Episode 11 and in episodes to come, we wove in oblique references to that. What we want to do is keep the audience in the same grief space as Sam and Dean, who miss Bobby and start to question whether what they’re seeing is evidence that he might be a spirit or whether they’re just going through that normal grieving process where you think you see your loved one everywhere. Anyone who has gone through that knows that happens sometimes. And even when you are the world’s foremost supernatural investigators, that could happen to you.
TVLINE | Was the empty beer bottle one reference to that? Like, maybe ghost Bobby drank it?
Yes, that was definitely meant to tingle everybody’s “spidey sense” and make you wonder, “Is this one of those just lapse moments for them or does it mean something more?” It’s definitely meant to be evocative.
TVLINE | Will we at some point get an answer as to what Bobby chose?
We’re not going to leave you totally dangling forever. We would never let an actor as good as Jim Beaver go forever and ever. We fully intend to see him again in some way. I can’t give away everything, but I can say at the very least, we could do something like flashbacks to earlier in their lives, or bring him in in some other way.

So excited for the rest of the season!
ReplyDeleteSo nice to have some actual spoilers! Can't wait for... everything;)
ReplyDelete-Seems like fans were right about ghost Bobby being the cause of the missing beer?
ReplyDelete-Some good stuff on Sam
- the clown thing sounds awesome but for the fact the episode is written by Dabb and Loflin who cant write Sam to save their lives
-MP back as Lucifer is always good
-Misha will be back as Cas which though they tried to throw us all off was what we all suspected any way
-Found it interesting that both in this interview and the other earlier today both interviewers ask lots of questions in regards to Sam and push the issue there a bit, seems like the lack of Sam's story so far this season has really been noticed by many
-I really want to know about the Unicorns in episode 14, because if its about fears then I want to know who the heck is afraid of them and why? Would be hilarious if it was Dean.
-the tidbit on episode 12 was interesting about them being in the same place at different times which was what I thought would be the case since I think they're actually hunting the same thing
-still thing the old friend is Jody Mills and that they're trying to make it more interesting then it actually is
Knowing Jim Beaver's coming back makes me happy. The guy's a lot of fun on screen and definitely a reason to tune in to "Supernatural."
ReplyDeleteAnd Cas' return is something wonderful to look forward to as well.
"Supernatural" never gets old.
Flash backs to the brothers' earlier lives. Woo hoo! I am all for that.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I love Bobby, I am not sure, if I want to see him back as a ghost. I think that it would take away from his send off that was "Death's Door." As I have said before, I want the dead to stay dead. Sorry Jim Beavers (you will just have to stay over on Justified with Timmy O).
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the rest of the season! Looking AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteRoll on season 8, 9 & 10 :)
Hope Bobby's back sooner than later. The clown thing sounds good but I know not to get my hopes up because of the writers.
ReplyDeleteThe empty beer moment didn't make me wonder. There wasn't a lot of subtlety to it. I just assumed it was Bobby.
ReplyDeleteI should be excited about unicorns? As much as I didn't like last season, at least it had forward momentum. This season is all over the place with no steps forward.
ReplyDeleteDammit! Can the writers please be courageous enough to kill someone off for good!! You did a fantastic job with Death's Door, let that be that. Well, at least keep it to flashbacks...
ReplyDeleteYup.
ReplyDeleteHopefully.
I actually think the opposite ... that Dabb/Loflin write a slighty better Sam than Dean, The duo just can't put Sammy in the hospital to save their lives. *G* No other comments on 7.14; I just hope the episode doesn't Dean or Sam look stupid like Swap Meat did. Yuck... except for a few small parts.
Yes, I made the same observation about the interviewers asking more questions about Sam and taking note that Sam's story was lacking. It reminded me of last summer's interviews where SG/RS were being put on the spot by a seeming lack of Dean spoilers. Dean does a storyarc this season that's all his although there's always going to be disagreement as to "its" being a good storyarc. I'm neutral about it being a good story arc but I am getting weary of it and that is similar to how "some fans" (I'm not going to try to quantitate) felt about "Soulless Sam" in S6. I loved it but can readily admit that SS was not to every fans' taste.
I think the boys are working on the same case, too, at different "times". The time travel paradox is if Dean and Ness working together DO solve the case in the "past" it should change the future ... time travel eps make my brain hurt, lol. The semi-lukewarm answer that Sera supplied regarding Sam's dilemma in 7.12 makes me think you're right and the "old friend" will be Jody - not that she's not exciting enough and I'd love a bonding scene, but she was Bobby's "old friend". I'm crossing my fingers for another surprising guest star (other than Chronos) that they may be keeping under wraps.
Thanks for the interview!
ReplyDeleteI knew they were trying to hint at ghost Bobby! As soon as I saw the empty beer the first thing I thought was "It's Bobby!" I really hope they go somewhere with it, like Bobby's actually a ghost. The reaper did say if he stayed behind he'd be one. It would be great, and it would definitely cheer me up in this depressing season. If Bobby is a ghost, however, he definitely needs to eventually find a way to be at peace before he goes crazy like older ghosts do.
ReplyDeleteI have to politely disagree. In my opinion, I don't believe him coming back as a ghost would take away from it, only if Bobby comes back alive. John's death scene wasn't made any less dramatically sad after he showed up in the Season 2 finale so I don't see how this would be any different.
ReplyDeleteI'd agree with you, except I can't let Bobby and Cas go....Bobby was "untouchable", at one time I believed he would never die. When Cas died though, I was worried for Bobby. I definitely had the right. :(
ReplyDeleteAnyways, Bobby coming back as a ghost is not the same as someone coming back from the dead, not to me. I loved when John appeared in the season 2 finale, Ash and Pam showed up in Heaven, and Jo came back as a ghost. Ellen came back in an alternative timeline, and the time travel stuff to the past where the people who have died can have more background story to them developed.
They're still dead, it just helps me cope with the lost.
Inreresting.
ReplyDeleteAs far as Bobby's concerned, if it was me, I'd have chosen to remain a spirit to help the boys with my ghostly presence, knowing that I can ask them to get rid of me at any moment, by burning my bones or whatever.
As far as stories on the Winchester and friends' earlier lives, sign me up to petition for the stories of Sam and Dean's first hunts now!
I wanted to reply to jillyanne, but the Reply button won't let me, on the continuation of the series.
The sky's the limit as far as Supernatural is concerned. The theme it deals with has no limit. There will always be stories to be told.
It's not like Smallville, for ex., where the Clark had to grow up before the actor became too old to portray him and the stories became more difficult to tell.
In Supernatural the actors have grown-up in front of us and if they want, can continue on logically with their roles.
Of course the ratings would have to keep steady, but there's no reason it can't continue for as long as it's viable.
I am very pleased with this season so far and after reading Sera's comments about Bobby, I even feel better about the way they handled it last ep. Looking forward to the Sam eps and him dealing with the broken wall.
ReplyDeleteI have mixed emotions about Misha, as much as I loved Castiel, I also enjoyed all of his characters, so just as long as he is back I feel sure what ever part he plays will be very good. He was just so much fun as Hippie Cas.
I could care less about Castiel coming back. I always felt he was more of a periphery character, like Crowley, then apart of the Winchester's family. Felt Cas being part of the Winchester family was forced fed to us at the end of S6.
ReplyDeleteRegarding Dean's quest of revenge. I find if someone ironic considering that Dean was always the one trying to temper John and Sam's need for revenge with having fun and remembering what is really important- family- each other. Now it seems like it's Dean's turn to go off the deep end. Maybe this will help Dean understand a bit more what Sam went through when Dean died. Sam's need to get revenge against Lilith and even his Dan's need for revenge against the YED.
I agree Lililth. I don't want to see Bobby come back as a ghost. Remember Tessa's words to Dean in My Time of Dying? I don't want to see Bobby ending up like that, or even being exempt.
ReplyDeleteI do want Bobby back, but I want him back as a live breathing character. Hey, maybe Cas will bring him back to make up for his betrayal to the Winchesters.
I would love for Dean to come to some sort of understanding/acceptance in regards to John and how he brought the boys up. He needs to let go of his anger and move on on the 'my dad was a dick' front.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE those flashbacks.. and if they include Bobby, that's even better! I loved the scene where he played baseball with them in Death's Door.
ReplyDeleteThe rest of this season sounds really great!! I can't wait!!!
ReplyDeleteWhy they didn't make flashback episode when Bobby was alive? I can't stop thinking Gamble is just paying lip service. The rest of this season could be worse than now. She can laugh even after removing the touchstone of Supernatural. Scary.
ReplyDelete...I can't wait any longer
