Grey's Anatomy - Season 8 - Kate Walsh talks AU episode and Private Practice

3 Jan 2012

"The whole concept is really cool — a Sliding Doors kind of thing," says Private Practice star Kate Walsh, who guest stars. "It's interesting to see all of the characters turned upside down a little. Ellis is alive and well and has changed everything. She has a different relationship with her daughter, which makes Meredith a different person — not the kind of woman who would continue on with someone who's married." Meow!

To create an alternate-universe look, the makeup, wardrobe and hairstylists returned Kate to the way she looked in 2005. "It was really fun for me to be back in the really coiffed hair and red lips," she says. "And all the guys are wearing ties and buttoned-up white coats. Patrick [Dempsey] looked a little like a mad scientist so we were calling him McDreary instead of McDreamy. It was all very strange, creepy and cool."

While the hospital staff perceives the Drs. Shepherd as the perfect couple, Kate says viewers will "see what's really transpiring. There may or may not be a baby on the way."

This may also be the year when Addison becomes a mommy on Private Practice. Kate teases, "She's going to Palm Springs with Jake." Hmmm... perhaps to conceive a baby in the desert? "That's all I'm tellin' ya!"

  1. So I'm taking this to mean AU!Addison is knocked up, and she and Derek are definitely having a baby. Addison isn't pregnant on PP, but hopefully she will be soon.

And I'm still thinking AU!April will be pregnant because Sarah Drew is.

  4. At this point, I'm only curious to see which episode I will ultimately dislike more - this alternate reality episode or last season's musical episode.

  8. I'm intrigued to see how this ep turns out.

  9. Because it was forced, awkward, and ill-conceived?  It's likely that the only person that disliked it more than me was Patrick Dempsey.

  10. I kinda liked it, but I understand why people hated the musical episode.

I'm so excited for this AU one, though!

  11. This is going to be painful to watch!!! I hated Addison and Derek.... HATED them!!! And now she's gonna be pregnant as well??? And Derek and Meredith can't have kids in reality??? How about you don't make this episode and make Meredith pregnant in the actual show, Shonda!!!! The only reason I'll watch is because I loved Ellis and I'm intrigued about her relationship with Meredith. I hope that at least Meredith is in a relationship as well !!! Mark maybe!!! :D !!!!

  12. very well. I enjoyed it I think it definitely pulled away from the drama and emotion that could have been felt.

  13. To be fair, there were parts of the episode that I liked but none of them involved singing.

  14. Calm down! It's just a fun episode in an AU. It's not supposed to be reality. I don't understand this overreaction from people. I hate Derek and Addison, too, but you know what? I'm freaking excited for this! It's going to be awesome and fun.

And Meredith doesn't need to be pregnant - She and Derek can adopt - Hopefully Zola.

And I heard that AU!Meredith is engaged.

  15. i can respect that. Some of the songs did take away from the emotion  of the scene for me. But over all i enjoyed the episode and any chance to hear Sara Ramirez sing im down for it. She is such an amazing talent.

  17. I'm intrigued about this AU episode.  Also the little comment from KW in the article "the viewers will see what is really transpriring" make's me think that it's not all happy in the marriage still and maybe Derek is pining over Meredith, or if infact that she is engaged as some reports suggest he still hate's his vet touching her with his bare hands lol.

  18. really hope we get the adoption answer in the next couple of episodes. Would love to see the social worker just show up with Zola and surprise them.

  19. This! I really love Zola, and I want MerDer to adopt her! All three of them are a cute family.

  20. Didn't Meredith and Derek get the adoption answer in one of the last episodes before the show went on hiatus for winter break? Wasn't it no to adopting Zola?

  21. I absolutely loathed the musical episode, and I can see this episode easily going that way, that said I'm kind of looking forward to seeing this one... It might just be severe TV withdrawl causing delusional thinking, but I think this will be a polarizing episode where either you love it or hate it. And, as a Kate Walsh fan, worst case scenario I'll get an extra Addison beat, which is still a win in my books...

I didn't follow cast reactions to the musical episode, did PD vocally hate it?

  22. He didn't say he hated it.  He did say in TV Guide magazine that the musical episode "was a mistake."  If he was willing to say something like that publicly, you can bet that he did hate it.
