i have been a hardcore arthur/gwen shipper, but i just can't after this episode. just the worst writing i have ever seen. so arthur just goes from "everything is gone between us" to "i need you!" i have never seen a worse developed relationship
I strongly disagree. I believe that Gwen's betrayal created a side of him that genuinely does feel like there's nothing between them anymore, but that leaves the side that's in love with her intact.
I've been cheated on before. It was a kiss (just like what happened here) and that kind of tore me in two. A part of me hated her for it but a part of me still loved her. It's the same thing for Arthur. He won't forgive her betrayal, but move past it? Sure.
Well, it is hard to put this into a few sentences.
I enjoyed the episode as such: loved that Merlin took charge and used his magic to great effect (like killing off Agravaine, putting Morgana out of action..), loved that Arthur listened to Merlin more, loved the sword in the stone scene, loved Arthur's doubts and Merlin talking him out of it,
...BUT there was still not the recognition of Merlin by Arthur I had hoped for. ...BUT there was not even the tiniest of reveals to anyone (Gwen was an obvious choice here... Arthur surely could have coped with a bit of dragonlord knowledge?)) ...BUT I could not understand how Arthur changed his mind about Gwen so quickly. How he can he trust her so suddenly? Just because Isolde died and he realized what he was missing? Hmmmm....I guess the writers are setting up a situation which will create more stories in season 5!
And as for Morgana,.... how on earth did she disappear from the castle??? I love this show but the writers MUST give us a reveal at the beginning of series 5, so Merlin can deal with Morgana and Arthur has time to get used to the idea of having a sorcerer as a friend and servant!
Amazing! I love that Arthur FINALLY got Excalibur and met with Morgana! And how she freaked out without magic and ran away from our king;) I don't like however HOW Arthur got Excalibur, I really wanted him to get it on his own. And poor Isolde... So sorry for her. And the betrayal at the end! I really wish we could see a glimpse of Mordred instead...:)
Loved it. Arthur finally getting Excalibur. Gwen becoming queen (wonder if Arthur will ever find out about the enchantment), Merlin getting really proactive with his magic and that intriguing ending.
Anyway, for all the ppl who doubt Arthur marrying Gwen In my eyes it was not sudden at al. First they 'split' due to Gwen 'cheating', but do they stop loving eachother all of a sudden? NO! As you have seen, in the episodes after that, Arthur thinks a lot about her, gives up a marriage with that princes (who was a great fit btw) and prolly some other stuff I've forgotten. So no, it wasn't: " "everything is gone between us" to "i need you!" ". That were just the words, not their feelings.
Ignoring the typical story holes (like Morgana disappearing in a castle full of battles and armed men) and the very limited VFX of the Fisher-Price white dragon (it is BBC afterall) it was a decent episode.
I guess the lack of Arthur's magical reveal was disappointing. I understand why, but it just feels like it's been long enough after 4 years and it is time. Merlin is no longer the uncertain mageling, he is a confident and powerful mage in control of his abilities. Scary control! He kicked some ass this episode!
I was not a fan of the slow-motion fighting either. Frankly it came off as cheesy as did the Tristan and Isolde synchronized fighting.
That all aside, their was some serious movement in this episode. Arthur's confidence has been restored, Excalibur has been claimed, Camelot has been reclaimed, Merlin was instinctual and in full control of his abilities with no hesitation of using them in the open versus his enemies, and Gwen and Arthur finally are together so no more silly royal-commoner love issues. At least not for now....
I think that dragon is going to play a role in Morgana's redemption. I'm almost certain she's going to get a storyline like that next season. Mostly because if she tries to take Camelot yet again, it would be bad plotting, and if she keeps going down the same path over and over again people are going to get bored of her.
I like evil Morgana, but it has run its course. I think a redemption storyline would keep things fresh. I saw hesitation there when she and Arthur faced each other. That woman desperately needs some kind of positive influence in her life. So far her allies have either inspired or enabled her insanity.
I think the reveal will come next season, it feels like it's the endgame if you know what I mean. We the audience are seeing how Arthur doesn't grow into his father and instead unites Albion, not what happens from then on afterwards. I still think that Gwen will be the first to know, she will most likely see other unexplained things and put two and two together and realise it was merlin who saved her from Morgana maybe.
Me too, let's hope he joins them in S5 and the three of them take a different track :D I'm intrigued to see where they will go with the dragon storyline, is he really evil or is it just that he has to see Emyrs/Morgana play out before Albion can be united by Arthur?
I do so hope that you are right about the reveal! I can't see how the show can continue with a sensible storyline otherwise. I also hope that Gwen will find out first. Merlin needs another confidante apart from Gaius and Gwen would be perfect, as she could support Merlin when the time comes to reveal the magic to Arthur. Well, and now for a very long 9 months ....
The series finale is a total mess! Really the worst writing I've ever seen in the series. Someone, please, make Julian Jones pull himself together or remove him from the screenwriters' team!! As well as the first 2 episode of the series (which, too, were screened in accordance with the script written by him), this episode is the worst in regard of plot developement!! All the scenes are jumbled, rushed and badly thought through!
ahaha. Lovin reading the comments. I kinda agree but for me this show is pure entertainment and I dont really care if stuff dont follow up. It's just fun and I love Arthur's story :P And YES season 5!! I didnt know
Morgana downs several armored knights of Camelot with 1 sword swipe each ...BUT serving girl Gwen is an even match for her.
I enjoy this show enough that I forgive these sorts of things though. There are only 2 real fantasy shows on right now, Merlin for light entertainment and GoT for the drama.
Agreed, it's escapism TV, although it does get on my nerves at times because I want the show to be so much more. Esp seeing how the youngsters have grown over the years; Colin and Bradley in particular are really blossoming into fantastic actors :D
Ok so for everyone who doesn't understand Arthur's 180 on Gwen ... I really think this was the entire purpose behind Tristan and Isolde. See how much they loved one another and then to see him lose her is a very powerful motivator in terms of forgiveness.
I'm pretty sure at the beginning of the show when he said they were done he meant every word. I also think that he probably never considered the possibility that Gwen would ever die. See Isolde who is a much more accomplished fighter go down probably reminded him of Gwen's mortality. I don't think he would have ever gotten over it if anything had happened to Gwen and he never offered that forgiveness to her and those words were the last thing they shared.
Considering this, I didn't find his flip even slightly underdeveloped.
Thank being said - I wish he would find out about that damn bracelet that started all of this hootenanny.
I love Colin Morgan - this was a great performance from him. He can play it so straight and dramatic when needed but he never loses his boyish appeal and sense of humor :) He makes me smile - especially when he's killing off that sack of crap uncle of Arthur's. That dude was a dick and I can't spell his name XD.
Morgana is dumb ... there are surely much more inventive ways to have Gwaine sing for his supper ... and as long as he can do it shirtless, I'm good with any of them. You'd think after he killed off a bunch of her men, she would get it - he's better than they are you moron.
Dragons are cool. I want a little dragon egg (Game of Thrones) and I want to sit on it until it hatches me a little pink dragon that breathes cute little cotton candy puffs of smoke that smell like someone set a cake on fire.
Thanks. That is at least something to look forward to! Of course, if you are really sad (like me) you might just watch all seasons again before season 5 starts ; )
I think you have described Arthur's feelings very well. The fact that she still stood shoulder to shoulder with him when he needed her the most, even thou he had said that to her, must have shown him that he can always count on her imo too.
As for the bracelet, I really thought Morgana would gloat about it once she was in the position of power at Camelot... just before the tables got turned on her. Could still happen next season.
"...BUT serving girl Gwen is an even match for her."
I kind of felt like they addressed this with the hit Morgana took on the way to her chambers - she was already wounded. I also wouldn't call them an even match as Morgana easily disarmed her wound and all ...
True dat ... guess I'll have to console myself with some new shows starting, faves returning and summer series heating up until then. I have started letting my daughter watch this show so I will be rewatching with her periodically :)
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Writers, Y U NO REVEAL?

Because nothing consequential ever happens on this show.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm done.

There's always lots of speculating to be done in the off air months thou, esp when they get back to filming and photos/set reports start coming in :D
