I think it's time I stopped pretending that this show isn't a poorly disguised attempt to have a live action Batman series on television. He's got the cash, the suits, the gagets, the voice, and the one-liners. It works because there's no cape or cowl.
I have always felt that to make a s"superhero" show successful these days they need to make the series grounded in reality and lose the fantastical villains and costumes....
PoI certainly meets those standards. Perhaps it is not 100% grounded in reality or realistic in its depictions of Reese abilites, but it follows real world logic and laws.
I suppose the name of the producer has some influence on your perception, otherwise I could tell you that those elements you mention (being rich, being cool, etc) could be Iron Man; or maybe some other guy (i'm no expert on superheros, it's never been my kind of thing apart from Spiderman when I was a kid).
That said, I do aknowledge that some level of fantasy exists, as Reese is depicted as almost superhuman. But even so, the lack of supervilains and superpowers makes POI harder to write, as no current superhero 'deus ex macchina' is available (the-asteroid-that-passes-close-to-earth-and-emits-a-greenish-radiation-right-when-the-superhero-needs-to-return-from-the-dead kind of thing).
Ok, maybe you're right... I just don't like the idea ;)

That's absolutely right! I never cared for superheroes mainly because what's the point? They'll just pull off some power we never had heard before, or introduce a new super character that will help with a tailored-to-fit power to revive and save the superhero. It's pointless to expect any kind of logic unless the profit logic for selling action dummies and t-shirts afterwards.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Woooooooooooooooooooow. Badass show ever.

And because there's no Robin saying Holy Generic Quip?
ReplyDeleteAnd, especially post-Smallville, the niche is available.
ReplyDelete"And because there's no Robin saying Holy Generic Quip?"
ReplyDeleteThat definitely helps. :)
Well, let's be honest. There is no procedural crime drama on television that is strictly realistic. None of them are even close. So, no big deal. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteI love the drinking game idea. ;-)

I know right?
ReplyDeleteI can respect a money grab by a superhero movie... it's why studios make that type of movie. It's not for artistic sake. XD
The big cheesy blockbusters are made to make masses of money that can fund the artistic pictures that win the studio awards. XD
Gadz! A PoI drinking game? I could be in for that!
ReplyDeleteIt would be more successful than the Game of Thrones drinking games I tried I'm sure. They just got you smashed before the midway point.
Quite true... and ironic, isn't it?
