Grey's Anatomy - Episode 8.09 - Dark Was The Night - Review

31 Dec 2011

As seasons go, this one is shaping up to be pretty darn good. Definitely superior to Season 7, which disappointed almost every fan on some level at some point and possibly better than a few of the earlier seasons (too early to judge completely). “Dark is the Night” kept up the season quality proving to be a fitting mid season finale, giving us drama, story and our usual dose of dark humour. I will venture to say it was a better episode even than the S7 season finale. It was enjoyable. But it was flawed. And is by no stretch of the imagination the best that the writers have given us or could have given us.

Meredith and Derek have lost the baby and the social worker has nailed the adoption door shut, there is no hope. Whilst this story has it’s charm and honesty (and unbelievable cuteness – cue another picture of Derek and Zola – pause for a moment and stare at it) I’ve always found it difficult to believe that these two doctors would ever end up with an adopted child. I may well be proven wrong, Zola may pop up again, but there was always a strong chance that the social workers would struggle to find Meredith and Derek a stable couple. After all, we’ve seen little about them recently to illustrate they are stable. It’s not that I don’t want them to, or that they don’t deserve a child, it’s that adoption is a road full of traps, roadblocks and bumps. I am sad for them, but also glad for the drama.
"No more talk about kids. I'm going to stop that now and go daydream of what life would be like if my mother  didn't get Alzheimer's and Derek was still with Addison"

Meredith retreats to being Meredith and her reaction leads us to one of my favourite scenes in the episode with Cristina and Derek. Ever since S8 “Adrift and At Peace” the bond developed between these two characters has disappeared, but here we get a reminder. Cristina reminds Derek that Meredith has a pattern of behaviour. She will come back.
Putting blocks in the Meredith Derek relationship seems to be the raison d’être for Grey’s but we can comfort ourselves that Derek is at least starting to spot the error of his ways.
"Yes, I know, it's all my fault" swoon swoon swoon

Henry’s expiry date has arrived. Oh dear. We all knew this would happen, right from the very moment he appeared – as a patient. That he appeared in THE lift told us much about the impact he was intended to have on the show – clearly of some emotional importance to a character. And he was. Poor Teddy fell in love with him, lost him, but she doesn’t know it yet. The big ‘unveil’ being drawn out to 810. Much credit goes to the writers for this involved plot. Not only was Henry an entirely likeable character, written as a humorous, warm foil to Teddy’s serious professional, his demise has been neatly intertwined with Teddy and Cristina, an already complicated mentor/mentee relationship. Because although it is clear to the viewer that Cristina was blameless in his death, this fact will not be so clear to Teddy, and I suspect will be drawn out for some time through the rest of the season. I am looking forward to how the writers portray Teddy’s grief, hoping that they will continue to build some much-needed depth into this character.

I fear this is the last 'happy' shot of Teddy we're going to see for a while!

If I have one criticism of this story within the episode it is that we know he’s died. I would have preferred the drama of not knowing – but then I do love a good cliffhanger! Actually I have two criticisms but the second is attached to my increasing dislike of Owen. Owen, if you want to be chief then bloody well act like it, and please take that dreadful over-acted hang dog look off your face.

Speaking of chief, I mean the real, one and only chief, Dr Webber. Wasn’t he lovely? Although he will always be chief to me I continue to love the fact that he is enjoying his ‘regular attending’ job, that he’s still learning and that he’s respecting the 5th years and their own experience. His interaction with Cristina as she enters the OR to start the surgery on Henry was a lovely continuation of “Heart in a Box”, he understands her, possibly more than most, he is willing to learn from her, and he pays no attention to her apparently ‘heartless’ approach to patient bedside manner. He’s relaxed, and comfortable with himself, and remains, as one of my commenter’s rightly pointed out, the heart of the show.
I am confident he will protect Cristina from the wrath of a grieving Teddy.

Alex and Meredith take off to save a baby under the guidance of (a not before time professional badass) Dr Robbins.
"Alex, we can't leave the baby" "Of course we can Meredith, it's a plastic doll"

Whilst this little story arc clearly provided us with some drama I struggled to connect it to the main ongoing events at SGMW. It was merely a vehicle (no pun intended) to get Alex and Meredith talking. It worked. It was also probably meant as some kind of baby parallel with Zola, but if it was, it was lost on me. I couldn’t help but feel that the writers blew the punch line by having both characters walk out of the ambulance unscathed. And whilst they were treated to a desperately sad sight as they opened the door, the emotional impact had already severely diminished. The cynic in me would say that this was deliberate due to ongoing contract negotiations. To go into a two month hiatus with doubt over the survival of two original characters would have been an extraordinary kick in the pants to the fans. So whilst it reduced the impact it was the right decision to make. The conversation that preceded it between Alex and Meredith was quite true to character and illustrates that Alex still feels some responsibility for Meredith and Derek’s situation (although he shouldn’t) and doesn’t quite know what to do.

But the plot lines of this episode struggled to move beyond mediocre and the strong Teddy story was negated by the contrived and poorly executed ‘mistake’ storyline. Regular readers of this blog will know I am no Jackson Avery fan, but even I can spot when two characters/actors have been stitched up. Neither the brilliant Sara Ramirez, nor the pretty (that’s the only positive adjective I can use to describe him) yet dull Jessie Williams deserved the treatment they received. Given the gravity of the surgical mistake made and the fact that this is a career defining moment for both Dr Torres and Dr Avery this story was given insufficient and superficial treatment.
Yes, I usually avoid including pictures of Avery, but ladies and gentlemen we are now looking at a massive FAIL. *insert evil laugh* (Not you Callie of course!)

It was a device to get Teddy into a different surgery and keep Callie busy. There was absolutely no emotional investment in the patient. We did not see the surgery, nor did we see any interaction between the two surgeons before, during or after the event, only after they discover an error. There has been some build up to this event from Callie’s perspective – brilliant surgeries in the past few episodes – and Jackson, despite being the Günther, has been shown to lack confidence and is decidedly the weakest of the 5th years technically. But neither character deserved the lip service they received. Don’t get me wrong, I am secretly pleased that Jackson is messing up, but still, that’s not the point...The most engaging part of this story presented itself in the form of Bailey coaching Callie. This interaction has helped to save the storyline from the abyss. When is there ever a bad scene between Callie and Bailey!

Perhaps I was expecting too much of this episode. It was, after all, merely a mid season finale. But it was built up by television writers and critics with crescendo. And if you know music, you will know that at the end of the crescendo is some form of worthy climax.

It was enjoyable, there were moments of brilliant writing and acting – the entire Teddy/Henry/Cristina/Richard arc – also include the lovely comic timing of Chyler Leigh when she’s talking to Owen – you know this is still a quality show. There was story progression in other areas. We finally got to hear an admission from Derek that he is partly responsible for the situation he finds himself in with Meredith. Despite the fact that she doesn’t want his children Owen knows that Cristina has a big heart. And Arizona and Mark continue to demonstrate that they have found some peace with each other. And as a side point, wasn’t it great to see Arizona as the badass tiny human surgeon at last.

I really felt more for the characters in this episode than I did in the “emotional shoot out” that was the S7 finale. I really enjoyed the episode the first time around. But I had to watch it again to write this review and to be honest, doing that was something of a chore.

The very best moments:
Watching Cristina become aware of who it is - brilliant Sandra Oh.
The moment Cristina realises she's only gone and screwed up her Cardio-God-In-Waiting title.
Cristina and Richard – the more I see of this surgical mentor/mentee type relationship the more I love it.
Meredith and Alex arguing in the ambulance. Oh how I’ve missed their banter.

And the best dialogue:
Cristina to Derek – “She always comes back , she might need a minute to back away but she comes back.”

M: “I offered to time share Sofia with Derek and Meredith, if they don’t end up with kids of their own. He said no.”
A: “Why?”
D: “Because your child is not a rental car. We’re not gonna take her out one week a month”
A: “Have you seen her? Because she’s heartstoppingly adorable”
D: “You’re missing the point”
M: “HE’s missing the point”
A: “No, she’s delicious, she’s addictive, why wouldn’t you want to parent her”

Oh Dreamy, you’ve SO missed the point.
A: "Seriously Derek, if you could take Sofia off our hands then Callie and I will finally be rid of Mark"
M: "aww Arizona you don't really mean that, you're just havin' a laugh"
A: "No really Derek, take her"

And finally I offer a big UP to the lovely, brilliant, funny and adorable Scott Foley. We will miss you.
But please don’t come back as Dead Henry. I beg you.

Happy new year everyone!

  3. I did enjoy this episode but i do have a major issue with b.s. storyline Callie and Avery had.  I know you despise pretty eyes but the writing was wack for those 2 characters.

Meredith/Derrick/Cristina story was written and executed very well. I do enjoy the relationship that is between Cristina and Derrick theirs definitely a love and understanding their.  Its not overt but we know it exist and its very sweet to watch.

As far as Mer/Der I dont see them getting Zola back. Though stranger things have happened on grey's, i mean they had a person have sex with a ghost.  With that said I do enjoy they are showing the dark side of adoptions.  Meaning its not as easy as people might think, regardless if ur a world class surgeon it doesn't make u fit to be a parent.  I think they are doing a really acurate job at depicting the adoption process.

Im over the Alex blaming himself story. Wow is me I get, get over the self loathing.  Yes he mucked up but Mer/Der were responsible as well.  I need them to write Alex a better storyline b/c I'm over this nonsense.

The best storyline is definitely Cristina/Richard/Henry/Teddy/Owen/Lexie.
This was executed perfectly.  I was actually sad when Henry died but then I really felt it when Cristina found out it was Henry. Sandra Oh is a power house OMG she pulls at my heart I love her.  Owen is a lil bitch who needs to grow a pair.  I agree with you he's is totally not acting like a Chief.  I do enjoy the writers exploring the Cristina/Webber relationship more.  Webber always knew Cristina was special and a gifted surgeon.  I love how he gets to see it truly first hand and just acts as a guide to help her become even better and in the process he in turn is becoming better.  Its really sweet to see Webber branching out and not be so focused on Meredith.  I do want them continue this exploration with these two.  It sucks for Teddy its not much more you can say.  Its a cruel joke for us and Teddy that we know Henry is gone but she doesn't.  Its cruel for the viewer b/c we know the secret yet we cant tell her ad we know once she finds out she will be crushed, heart broken, will feel betrayed and alone.  We just have to wait watch and see it unfold.

Mark and Arizona were cute, with the sharing Sofia thing.  Funny how that seems to be an issue in an upcoming episode were Callie wants Mark to babysit but he wont and she cant find no one to take Sofia lol.

P.S. Bailey scenes with anyone is golden.

Good Review my friend, hopefully next week when Grey's returns it wont take you this long to write the review.  lol just joking!

  4. Finally I get my fav review and reviewer back! I'm happy, about time. I have been waiting this patiently :)Wellcome back my dear friend.I love this season so much and in so many ways, surely it has much more quality than season 7 you are perfectly right, even if personally I didn't dislike totally season 7 but just registered a series of mistakes and poor writing sometimes that writers are trying (succesfully I would say) to address now, and with the efforts they are making honestly I forgive them and I'm really enjoying this season.About the mid season final we are talking about I do agree with you but I want to stress the point about that Callie/Avery thing (I don't even know how to call it).I'm beyond upset and mad about it. I don't quite understand the point. Does it is needed to give Teddy a reason to blame Callie, on top of the rest of the hospital, for her impossibility to be close to her husband during the surgery that will bring him to death?Well, this is the only reason I can think about involving the ALWAYS badass, hardcore, artist, kind, high professional rockstar-with-a-scalpel Callie in such poor low and non-sense surgical mistake (as you underlined properly this comes immediately after she has just performed a series of incredible high quality surgeries just to recall her high surgeoun abilities). And it is true is Avery mistake but anyway Callie is at least pictured as a superficial supervisor (so out of her character) reading a gossip magazine thinking about JLo instead of looking carefully during an extraordinary and difficult surgery lead by Avery (seriously???!Avery?!?) that has never been showed before working with Callie. I'm confused and very disappointed, mad, shocked, about that.I loved the parallel about the cliffhanger and the meaning of Meredith explanation in the voice out of screen. The explanation of the whole episode, the explanation of life facts.Bailey is back and I love, love it. Finally, Jan 5 is really close and I love love this too :) grey's is coming back *squeal* Happy new year to you too dear.

  5. While I absolutely loved baby Zola, I hated the adoption storyline because I knew it was never going to develop in the way that we wanted it to. The real question now is will Meredith and Derek finally have a baby of their own??

  6. I've been waiting for your review! I'm hoping there might be a twist coming in the adoption storyline and that Mer/Der do get Zola back - but then again this is Grey's. It was great to finally see some acknowledgement from Derek that this wasn't all Mer's fault - he's been a pain this season and some of my irritation lessened after this ep. The Teddy/Henry/Christina storyline was fantastic - the scene where Owen told Christina was perfect. Lexie and Richard were also great as part of the storyline. But can we please have Webber back as Chief - because Owen is useless at it?! As for the other characters...loved Arizona - she was awesome, didn't like the Callie/Avery one - it felt shoved in and I don't buy Callie being inattentive during a surgery.
Thanks for the review! It was great as usual. I'm going to finish with Henry...I knew it was coming but man I was annoyed when it happened. Going to miss Henry (but not enough to put with ghost Henry!).

  7. Bring Back Chief Webber!!!! We should all start a petition! lol

  8. lol How did I know your biggest gripe would be with the Callie storyline, how ive missed it so lol Cant wait for Thursday new episode.

  9. Can't stand the Callie/Avery story. It's an insult to the actors to be honest. I notice the Mark/Arizona 'joking' about has been taken so seriously by die hard Calzona fans. Really should be taken for what it is - an illustration that they are working together with parenting and can now joke about it. That they can joke about it is a measure of their progress.

  10. I couldn't agree more....I enjoy their relationship now (Arizona and Mark).  Before it was so combative and Mark just seemed like an annoying 3rd wheel. But now they share a command interest and have a real connection and bond.  So its refreshing their story its wonderful that they all can co-parent with ease.

I totally agree the Callie/Avery story is a complete smack in the face to Jessie and Sara.  At the very least Sara deserves better, Jessie by default should have gotten a better arch.

With that said (devils advocate) The writers probably did this to throw a bone to other characters (Callie/Avery) b/c the true focus of this episode was the Henry/Cristina/Teddy arc and it was the only way for them to be included.  I think i might have just like it if they played the background in this episode like Bailey did. But maybe it will be flushed and more developed on Thursday.

  11. I love the adoption storyline, but I'm with you, I always feared it wouldn't be handled well. I really don't understand it because Shonda has been through the adoption process. I can only assume she was privileged with speed and ease rather than the real process.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Ahh thanks. See my comment above regarding my view on Callie being inattentive. Ultimately I don't think the story will be about her. I too am going to miss Henry a lot!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Whilst I, like you, hate the Callie/Avery storyline there are two points to stress. Callie reading a magazine through the surgery is quite normal. We've seen Webber do it with a book. We've seen Callie do it to the 'approval' of her peers during the Gunther surgery. This is not unusual.
I am hoping, stress hoping, that this is a big story for Avery and NOT a big story for Callie. Remember all the 5th years are fearful of bad outcomes. It's THEIR names on the docket so Callie wouldn't be the one taking the fall (I'm assuming). I think this will turn out to be more of an Avery story.

    ReplyDelete
  14. You've pointed out how bad the writing was because this is such a serious event (almost killing someone by a huge surgical error) that to ONLY treat it as a bone or as the only way for them to be included is irresponsible. I think this will have consequences. I just hope they are explored more deeply than the beginning of this story.

    ReplyDelete
  15. yea the writers really dropped the ball with these two characters.  We can only hope they redeem themselves in the aftermath/resolution to this  issue.

  16. That part of the storyline of Avery's botched surgery was so contrived. He's plastics. Has always been plastics. Proclaimed plastics in the previous episode and threw Lexie to the curb (wise move) for plastics, which begs the question, "what on earth is Avery doing a spinal fusion?" For Torres who has always been very proficient at her specialty, this was a farce. She should be suspended for gross negligence, misconduct and malpractice for allowing a plastics resident to perform a solo spinal fusion, without supervision, in her presence while she's reading about JLo. That was so ridiculous that it was laughable and for Bailey to say "we all do it," I find absurd.Oh, how I loved your description of Owen. It's sad that Sandra Oh had to be paired with him. It just makes him look worse. Didn't you think that Mark/Arizona's offering of Sofia to Derek was incredibly insensitive? To me, it was like flaunting that he had a kid and although Derek has always wanted one, he doesn't. It wasn't even funny. But Grey's manages to do that a lot. They throw something stupid and contrived into the storyline and expect us all to accept it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thank you very much for your comments. You make some good points, although I do disagree with one or two of them. Avery hasn't always been plastics. Only during S8 has he found this specialty, for a long while he was cardio. However, having found a specialty the 5th years are also required to complete a broader range of surgeries. This is the foundation of the storyline for "bad outcomes" assessment. None of them like bad outcomes. Think back only a couple of episodes and Cristina was building a neck with Callie. Or April was repairing the hand with her also. Meredith accompanied Alex to collect the baby. Alex did brain surgery with Derek and intestinal surgery with Richard. Therefore it is quite reasonable for Avery to be doing spinal surgery and to be taking point. He hasn't completed his training and taking point across other specialties is part of the assessment. It is also not unusual for the supervising surgeon to be sitting on the sidelines reading. Webber read a book whilst Alex did a surgery (on an adult, not a child). (I don't condone the reading, it's just an observation). Whilst Callie IS supervising the purpose of the 5th year assessment is that these residents have to prove themselves as surgeons generally first, then through their specialty, therefore unlike in previous seasons where the Attendings will take full responsibility, in this case a bad outcome is a black mark against the resident. (Remember that Cristina prematurely withdrew from the neck surgery because she didn't want her name against the bad outcome). I'm not defending Callie, she should have been paying more attention. I'm saying that Avery was legitimately doing the surgery, taking point and he now has a massive 'bad outcome'. He most definitely shares responsibility. But I completely agree with you, the whole story was contrived.

Regarding Mark and Arizona - I have to disagree with you here. I don't think it was insensitive. Grey's humour has ALWAYS been dark humour. The show is full of it, from all characters and indeed Meredith is a main proponent of it. Indeed, Alex does it all the time. Therefore Mark's 'joke' suggestion was in keeping with the writing and tone of the show. Even Derek did not respond by thinking Mark made a sensitive remark about him. Derek defended Sofia and Mark's wanting to hire her out. My interpretation of this joke was to really illustrate the strength of the relationship now between Mark and Arizona. Particularly Arizona's state of mind. In my opinion her reaction is key. She goes straight into the joke, without any hesitation, seeing it for what it is, a joke, and feigning shock at why Derek would reject the idea of parenting Sofia. I see it as a very very big signal that these two characters have moved on a lot and are extremely comfortable with their parenting arrangement. It's time for us fans to do the same.

I completely agree with you about Owen and Sandra Oh. I think she does indeed deserve a much better character to partner Cristina up with. The more I see of Owen, the more I dislike him.

  19. The timing of your review is remarkable, a few days prior to a new episode, onward, upward and forward I say. There is great potential to emerge from the aftermath of Henry's death between Teddy and Cristina and I hope the writers will provide...I believe that the adoption story needs to go away...and yes
Avery/Torres ohhhh what were they thinking??...I have no words suitable or otherwise, it was painful to watch. I also will miss Mr. Foley. He was a great addition to the cast. I remain optimistic for what's ahead. I love Alex and Meredith on screen together, some of their past scenes are permanently burned in my brain. Thank you for your review despite it being "something of a chore". I am being uncharacteristically agreeable today...onward and upward I say and Happy New Year.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Thank you! I will admit the timing of review was partly planned and partly not. I wanted to get in on a low Grey's news period but before the sneaks/promos arrived. I must say that writing the episode review itself is not the chore. In order to review properly I have to watch the episode again and concentrate on it quite hard - not do other things like tweeting at the same time. If I'm not inspired by the episode then watching again can be a chore. I found watching Callie and Avery storyline painful to watch.
Yes, I love it when people are disagreeable ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes I thought that is what you meant by it being a "chore". If you do a mid season review or something like that then I will bring my disagreeable self to the table . *_____*

    ReplyDelete
  22. I wrote a very, very lengthy response to you via email, but I don't think it's appropriate here.  I will say, however, residents do need to display proficiency at procedures but certainly not at the risk of patients and certainly not all specialized procedures. Supervising surgeons do oversee as Webber did with Meredith with her wedding present from Derek. Derek did with Meredith when she clipped the aneurysm (even though he was angry at her). That is the norm and for Grey's to project anything else is wrong. Further, a bad outcome is not just a bad mark against the resident, it's also against the supervising surgeon who is responsible for what takes place in their OR. It would definitely be reviewed and scrutinized by the Chief of Surgery as well as committee of the medical staff. Recognizing that this is just a TV show and reality is not part of the show, it's just sad that Grey's would project such practice as normal and don't feel a responsibility to try to at least get it close to reality.  Thanks for your comments.
