IIOY???? SO can't wait until Sunday! While it sucks that Homeland is having its Season Finale this weekend, I have no complaints about Dexter's Finale. Dexter is highly entertaining but these past two seasons have been a let down in many ways. And it needs to end, and end on a good note, too. Now Homeland is something else entirely! A very good show!
A lot of people have criticised Dexter this season, but I think it has been quite good when you compare it to S5 and S3. Season 3 was just dreadful. Trailer looks good, though! Can't wait :D
I loved S5, but S3 was the worst one up until this year for me. Hanks just hasn't been able to carry the show imo, and the plots have all seemed weak and not interconnecting properly at all :(
How they can rank these two shows on a par to advertise them together like this is beyond me :p The only thing I want to know about Dexter is what this cliffhanger ending will be, let's hope the rugrat doesn't get thrown off the roof along with Hanks :o
I loved season 5 and I also think this season is excellent. The writers have really gone out of their way to tie everything back to Brian (duality) and Arthur (trinity) and sets up a type of fate in the Dexter universe by forcing these characters to change and be in new roles, but also by forcing them to take a look back and ask them if this change is really progress, as doomsday = epiphanies and emotional breakdowns....bigger changes.
I agree about Hanks! He's not the most convincing and, to be fair, his character hasn't really been all that fearful, unlike Trinity and ITK :/ The Gellar story was quite good though :) It was exciting seeing how that all played out through Dexter's eyes. Maybe I prefer S6 because it's fresh in my mind. I just didn't like the Lumen story throughout S5 :/
Hopefully they can come up with another ingenuous villain for S7 & 8 :D
I started off not liking Lumen much, but she was played a lot better than I expected I think. She caused a mirror to be held up to Dex which made him (and us) examine himself and his world.
This year was kinda the opposite for me. I was very excited to hear the religious idea and where it could go. But they have played it very black and white, rather than shades of grey/doubt, which hasn't helped us see anything particularly new in Dexter. It's all been too safe imo.
I've joked that I want next years villain to be Deb's doctor, or that she could be her dark passenger instead of real XD Their scenes in the last few episodes have been the highlight of the season for me, there's an under current going on as they talk and examine her life. That's what the rest of the show is missing for me this year :(
I don't think Hanks is the problem, it's the writing. The Brian episode was a prime example of wasted potential because they could have done so much with it. Hanks was better last week when there wasn't the fake-Gellar-story anymore. That story just felt forced and it took away most of the Hanks' character potential for some cheap thrills and surprises which were unnecessary and simply not surprising. That kind of writing and storyline is out of date in my opinion, that twist would have been good maybe 5 years ago, but things have changed. Twists have been overdone and plots have been used. I liked the Lumen story better and imho the worst moment of Season 5 was when they undid everything in the last 10 minutes of the finale. It cheapened everything and just showed that they were not truely committed to the storyline and backed out at the last minute. (I didn't love the storyline, but nothing speaks of bad writing as much as a deus-ex-machina ending which makes everything that happened completely irrelevant.)
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Thanks. Sad to think they're both on the last episode though.

ReplyDeleteDexter finales always make me nervous. This one will be no exception. I guess I can add Homeland to that list now too.
