7 years ago, on July 21rd 2004, FX lauched its third original drama series after The Shield on March 12th 2002 and Nip/Tuck on July 23rd 2003 : Rescue Me, a dramedy following the life of FDNY firefighter Tommy Gavin, whether its with his co-workers or with his family. And now, the show is beginning the final countdown. In 2 months, on September 7th 2011, Rescue Me will be gone.
Denis Leary stars in Rescue Me, produces it and wrote most of the episodes of all seasons with his friends Peter Tolan (also co-creator and director of ¼ of all the episodes) and Evan Reilly. Season 2.
ReplyDeleteThere's plenty of seasons so I'll rank
them : 2 > 1 > 3 > 6 > 4 > 5.
I watched the first 2 seasons in a
week, in late January 2009. After watching these 26 episodes, I was a
huge fan of the show. Seasons 1 and 2 are must-see TV, and hands down
some of the best seasons of TV I've ever seen.
I watched seasons 3 and 4 the next
month, and season 3 was good enough most of the time but I had a hard
time watching the very disappointing 4th season (no
inspiration, we come to not give a shit about the characters, the
humor became just gross and not funny, the drama feels fake all the
way, there's just nothing worth watching).
I started season 5 like everybody else,
when it premiered in April 2009... the thing is, I finished that
season a month ago. I simply gave up around the middle of the season
(I think I may not have seen most of episode 5.14, I don't remember).
I had come to hate the show, something I did not think was remotely
possible. Episode 5.08 was the only good episode in the first 13
episodes or so.
But because I never thought about being
done with Rescue Me for good (having loved it so much in seasons 1
and 2) and because the final season was coming up this July, I wanted
to be up to date and then I forced myself to continue, starting a
month ago. Episodes 5.15 and 5.16 were awful, but episodes 5.17 to
5.22 weren't that bad (I admit Maura Tierney's character gave the
final 6 episodes something interesting). I realize Denis Leary's
thing at the time was to have very long scenes in each of the last
4-5 episodes of the season : the characters talked a lot for a long
time and while the dialogues may have been well written, the stories
were crappy, but time goes by quicker when you have a small amount of
scenes.
Season 6, on the other hand, is
surprisingly quite good. It's nothing like seasons 1 and 2 during
which I felt involved, cared about Tommy, his evolution and in which
comedy and drama brilliantly blended, but there's definitely some
improvement compared to seasons 4 and 5. I still have episode 6.09
and 6.10 to watch, I'll do that tonight but so far, it is fun to
watch. The dialogues, as always, are well written, I acknowledge the
show has been pretty consistant of that (but it doesn't matter how
well thought out some lines may be when the stories just suck).
Now, I'll just talk about Sheila. Sure,
some Rescue Me characters had shitty storylines, but the characters
weren't shitty per say. Sheila, however, is. You have no idea how
much I hate her. Sheila is one of the most frustrating, annoying
character ever created on television, and she's in the main cast
since the beginning and will be until the end. In the first 3
seasons, there were some good things around but she has always been
hysterical and a pain in the ass. Her always sex-oriented storylines
with Timmy are plain boring. In season 5, every time Sheila was on
screen, I literally wanted to smash her face into a jelly, and even
smack her face off of her face (© Charlie Kelly).
They milked the cow for far too long,
they didn't know what they could come up with to fill the last 3
seasons but I admit I'll miss the show and the guys of the 62 Truck
of the FDNY, I really will.
I liked season 3. The house burning down was the start of full-on bat shit crazy Sheila. Sorry, Bunky Bunk. That lunatic is the only enjoyable part of a few very uneven seasons of Rescue Me for me. At least Sheila owns her crazy, unlike Janet who's nuts in her own way yet completely hypocritical and in denial about so, so much.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I haven't re-watched any of the seasons, so they are not all fresh in my mind..... but I think Season Two or Three were the best.
ReplyDeleteI really have no idea, I've only seen all the seasons once and it's been a while. I loved the first 3 seasons, then the 4th was a bit weaker iirc and 5 had simply too many episodes. And season 6 just wasn't the same anymore.
ReplyDeleteSo I'd have to choose for any of the first 3 seasons.
Haven't seen the earlier seasons in a while. From what I can remember, season 2 was my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI voted season 2, taking a chance that's the one I'm thinking of--where the chief retires, then doesn't know what to do with himself, so he eats a bullet. He had a lot of bad things happening in his life, and his arc was intense.
ReplyDeleteSeasons 1-3 were perfection.
