Fringe - Anna Torv Wants Less Tormented Olivia

28 Jun 2011

Fringe star Anna Torv has revealed that she wants her character Olivia to be less "tormented" in the show's fourth season.

In the sci-fi drama's third season finale, Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) was erased from history by a mysterious time paradox.

Torv told FearNet: "I want to see how much of Olivia's turmoil and sadness is connected to Peter, or things that have happened with him around."

She continued: "Are those things gone [without him]? Is there room, perhaps, for her to unbutton her coat a little bit?"

Torv, who plays both Olivia and her double Fauxlivia on the Fox series, added that she is keen to explore "a different take" on her character.

"Is there room for a different take on her?" she speculated. "Is she softer or is she harder [without Peter]? I am hopeful that she won't be as tormented. I think she needs a break."

Torv was recently named 'Best Actress in Television' for her Fringe role at the 37th Saturn Awards.

Fringe will return to Fridays at 9/8c in the fall on Fox.

  1. I don't think Olivia is the kind of character who gets to catch a break. It'd be nice to see but it might make her less interesting.

  2. She had half the season playing Olivia less tormented.... Less tormented Olivia - Fauxlivia, XD

Seriously though, I do too. End of the world scenarios don't exactly lend themselves to happy-go-lucky Olivia, but I would like to see a few episodes of her investigating while happy... dare I dream to think maybe even a PLAYFUL Olivia!

  3. No you're right. She is a tormented soul from childhood to adulthood. It's part of her very being and they just cannot erase that completely.

  4. Right, even without Peter she's been through so much. And who knows how not having Peter there for her in that moment as a child may have changed her. I can't wait to see how they play this season.

  5. I do think it would be nice to see what was tied to Peter, and I would love nothing more than to have Olivia be happy, but I don't see a 100% carefree Olivia in our future. :P
If it starts that way, it won't stay that way at the very least...

  6. She's a brilliant actress, but I hope so too; Olivia's done far too much feeling sorry for herself!

  7. Maybe a heightened Olivia vs. Bolivia rivalry this season will give Olivia the incentive to finally start dropping some of her baggage.

  8. Plus her fears are supposed to be gone by now...

  9. or without young peter telling her essentially it's going to be ok, what happens to her does she shoot her stepfather still? coz i think that had something to do with Peter..... maybe, i think coz he met her as a child, they have had more of an impact on each other than we realise now....

  10. I'm hoping for something like this because I really don't want everyone to be the same without Peter. I think they need to explore the impact he had on each of these people.

maybe since peter died at 8 or doesn't even exist now walter would have stopped the cortexifan trials or not started and she never became a cortexi kid.

  12. This is true. If Walter wasn't obsessed to make Olivia cross the universes so she could take Peter back home things would be different, but she would still have to face her abusive stepfather. And the trials actually had started when she was three before Peter's death.

  13. The thing is though, Olivia was happier in the pilot than we've ever seen her but she was also repressing memories from her childhood (being experimented upon etc) so it was really a happiness built on a house of cards.
