Lights Out - FX president expresses disappointment at Lights Out ratings, cancellation coming?

15 Jan 2011

FX president and GM John Landgraf acknowledged that he's disappointed in the ratings for the premiere last week of the network's latest drama series -- the boxing-themed Lights Out -- and continued to do post-mortems on the demise of Terriers but he remains undaunted going forward, stressing, "We've had six critically acclaimed shows and four ratings successes, one failure and one unknown. You can't bat .1000 in this business. That's just the way it is."

Landgraf cautioned that it's far too early to dismiss Lights Out as a failure after just a single airing. "It was tremendously acclaimed. We're disappointed by the premiere ratings, but we'll be running it as planned. There's (rarely) been a scripted series on television about boxing, and this is a very good one...(But) no matter how good the show is, the question is, 'Are they somebody's first choice? Are they good enough to overcome massive competition in the marketplace?' I can't tell you what will happen over he next 12 weeks. Premieres are very important, but shows also find audiences over time. We'll just have to wait and see."

  1. He's right and he's being fair enough.
I really hope this one doesn't get axed. I just got around to watching the pilot today and i don't want to see this one go.
I am glad to hear that they're giving it its complete run

  2. I'm gonna have to kill someone if they don't air all 13 episodes.

  3. You shouldn't be worried, even if the ratings are not great. I have never seen a cable channel that doesn't air all the episodes of a show (except Caprica lately whose 5 last episodes aired in a row 2 months after the other ones, but that was on SyFy, they're irrelevant).

I'm sure FX will air all the other 12 episodes, Terriers' ratings sucked from the very beginning (the pilot did a little bit more than Lights Out's actually) but still, they did air the whole season nonetheless.

Lights Out had a great pilot, that was not tremendous though but I will stick around for the whole season/series.

But anyway, Landgraf should be more concerned about what I'm gonna do to him and to his family if he doesn't renew The League for a 3rd season.

  4. Please document this. I would love to see your story re-enacted on television some day. "YOU KILL MY FAV'RITE SHOW. YOU MUST DIIIIIIIEEE."
    *cue the epic shootout*
Plus, I'd probably get a little too much enjoyment out of watching the actor portraying the person responsible for getting rid of more good tv get his ass beat down. :)

  5. The show is actually quite good, its just that people don't give it a chance, they watch one episode and judge the series off that. I also think that people are sort of turned away from it because it's about boxing, but the truth is that it's about so much more, a athletes life, returning to the ring, overall a terrific show that is extremely underrated.
