2010 Character Competition - Round 2.8 - Day 16

25 Sept 2010

Don't have a lot of time to write today, but yesterday we saw River Tam pull off a really impressive victory over an Abby Sciuto who never really got going, managing less than 1000 votes to River's near 7000. It certainly is looking very good for firefly at this time, it's totals something that only Dean Winchester & Elena Gilbert have managed so far. :P Also winning was Spike, who easily saw off Chloe Sullivan, and makes you wonder how Buffy herself has flopped so badly in the competition, losing in round one to Sookie Stackhouse.
Today we have the might of 'Dexter' Morgan taking on the much lighter, but still very popular Rachel Greene of 'Friends.' Also we have Malcolm Reynolds, who will be hoping that the 'Firefly' fans of yesterday stick around to help him beat leader of the 'V' resistance Erica Evans. It's gonna be good. Better get voting then :)

Also keep upto date with the competition and/or ask questions by following me on twitter. I'll also post some of my reviews, writing updates & other bits & bobs, more often than not TV and Film based. I'm at: http://twitter.com/AdDHarris

Don't forget to keep following your bracket if you entered the competition at http://www.dawgsled.com/darkufo/welcome.asp

Voting Time Folks...

In advance, the voting window is 24 hours, and I have set closing times for the poll, but if they do not work, or they aren't set at any point in the competition, the poll will close when I check the votes myself. This is not at all due to cheating, it's due to the fact that I will be busy and so please let's avoid the torrent of abuse that the infamous Smallville vs. The Vampire Diaries produced :P

Have fun guys, and any questions as always email me on:

  1. I voted for Dexter & Erica. I've watched both shows and they were entertaining :)

Excited for Fox vs. Dean tomorrow though also!

  2. Dexter and Malcom for me :)

    Brackets have been updated

    ReplyDelete
  3. Dexter and Malcolm for me!!!

    ReplyDelete
  4. me too
because i don't like Dexter and i do't know Firefly

    ReplyDelete
  5. Im rooting for Fox tomorrow. What about you Adam?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Fox for me as well tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  7. You really need to watch Firefly. And after that - Serenity.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Serenity is the film that was released after Firefly finished. Am I right?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Fox. I may have just watched a few Supernatural, but it's Fox

    ReplyDelete
  10. Dexter Morgan and Malcolm Reynolds - No Questions.

Dexter is easily one of the greatest characters to ever grace the TV Screen. Why would anyone vote for someone out of Friends? Absurd if you ask me.

Malcolm Reynolds - Although I haven't started watching Firefly yet, the show seems to have a large fan base for their characters. Sorry Erica (Juliet D:), but Malcolm gets my vote.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Rachel. Erica. Neither will win, but I don't care about any of these characters anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Tomorrow is a more exciting contest for me as well. I love both characters. I devoted a lot of time to both shows. But for me it is Dean.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Dex and Erica :D i really hope Erica wins over that-guy-from-firefly... never watched the show

    ReplyDelete
  14. Dexter/David and Juliet/Erica

    ReplyDelete
  15. For me it`s Dean too ;)

    ReplyDelete
  16. I voted for Rachel and Malcolm, but it actually doesn`t matter for me who wins. I like Rachel, but I don`t care for her as much as I care for other characters! Tomorrow`s poll is totally different story ;P

    ReplyDelete
  17. Dexter and Mal.

I voted against Malcolm last time, for good reason. He just wasn't the better character that round. This time, even though I am a huge supporter of Elizabeth Mitchell and I do like V, her character Erica just isn't as unique or appealing as Mal (yet).

    ReplyDelete
  18. I voted Dexter and Erica, though neither were choices I felt very strongly for. I think Mal is awesome but I prefer almost everyone else on Firefly to him! XD

    ReplyDelete
  19. If you don't know one or both shows at all then you should abstain from voting.

    ReplyDelete
  20. People refuse to apply that philosophy to public elections that actually matter so it's probably a waste of energy to nitpick about about a TV character poll.

This is more about giving people an excuse to interact and discuss (and in some cases debate/argue) their favorite shows and characters more than anything else. The poll is really just a catalyst.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I do completely agree with you, and that's why I keep coming back to every poll. But admitting you're voting one way simply because you don't know anything about the other show creates no dialogue. It just looks meaningless.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Fox vs. anything is Fox, at least for me.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Dexter and Mal. No contest.

    Friends, really? *shudder*

    ReplyDelete
  24. I voted Mal.
Not because i'm a fan of captain tightpants but because i want to see River Tam pitted against Malcolm Reynolds.

    It will be really badass!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Or it can be really strategic in that you vote against a character you know will end up going against a character you really do like. I also think it is valid to vote for a character you like instead of one you don't know. If we had to abstain from every vote simply because we had not seen both shows, this competition would be in trouble. There were a lot of shows represented and even though I watch a lot of TV, I had not seen a lot of them. BTW, I also think it is valid to vote against a character you didn't like even if you have never seen the other show. There would be far less people voting and responding if they had to see both shows to vote.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ackles vs anything is Ackles, at least for me.
(Ok with the exception of Kristen Bell...)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Me too. Because then only one of them will be in the contest and I hope it is Mal. Same with the LOST showdowns. I can't wait until Kate loses to Jack.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think you missed the point. I agree with you; I just don't agree that posting a comment that's just "Voted for A because I've never seen B" adds anything to, well, anything.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Rachel because I don't watch Dexter, but it's more of a "she probably won't win" thing. Mal for the second, no contest.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Someone correct me if i'm wrong but i think we cannot have an "incestuous" finale (two characters from the same show) anymore.
(At the bottom of the bracket, Castiel, Damon and Locke are out, Smallville characters are pitted together and all remaining Lost characters are on the top of the bracket).

I wouldn't be so sure about Kate loosing to Jack and the winner will face Elena next. Ouch!

    ReplyDelete
  31. If it ends up Jack vs. Elena, I will do something I never thought would happen in this contest. I will vote for Jack --- twice!

PS - I'm cautiously optimistic that Jack will decimate Kate, given that many LOST fans can't stand her. I can't understand why she is still in the contest.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I reeeeally wish I'd seen Firefly BEFORE doing my brackets xD Now I'm voting for Mal cos he's awesome but it goes against the bracket (although that's mostly cos I had Cas beating him in round 1)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anybody with a TV/Internet Connection should be watching Dexter.

    ReplyDelete
  34. A lot of people forget that this is a character contest and just end up voting for whoever's in their favourite show.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Except for people who like their heroes to be more hero and less anti-hero. I wasn't into Tony Soprano either. In fact, I'm not really a Showtime or HBO person.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't really think every show needs a hero. A protagonist, sure.

And I was no fan of the Sopranos either.

    ReplyDelete
  37. WOW, I just don't really know what to say. After reading your likes and dislikes I would say you have the worst taste on the planet because they are exact opposite of mine. Not even trying to be mean or anything, but wow, just wow.

It sounds like you may be more into ABC After School Specials and such. HBO makes the best shows period. Network is pretty terrible overall.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Do they even make after school specials any more? I'm not into "everything is rosy and hit me over the head with a moral" shows either. It just prefer less smut, nothing more violent than Supernatural or Bones, and a vocabulary that goes beyond cursing. I won't say that you have terrible taste, but not watching HBO and Showtime does keep my cable bill down. :-) I watch a lot of tv, including network, but most of the shows I like are on basic cable - USA and TNT.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It is perfectly okay for somebody to have completely different tastes.

HBO doesn't make the best shows period, as what makes a show "better" is subjective. HBO does make some quality shows but while I may think Dexter is miles ahead of Bones, that doesn't mean I'm right.

Being an ass about it only makes yourself look ignorant.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I only just realised that. I love this time of year. XD

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well it started this little chinwag. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  42. I am way in the minority on this site but I thought the majority of episodes were good but not fantastic. If it were still on TV, I would watch and enjoy it, but it wouldn't be appointment tv for me. I think the biggest appeal of Firefly is the strong online community that faced a David-Goliath battle and ended up getting a movie out of it. Score one for the fans! Also, it has great appeal in the "what might have been" category, since it was never given a chance to grow. I'd say Firefly is this generation's original Star Trek. A show that was pulled before it could really develop and whose appeal has gotten stronger after it ended. Definitely watch it. It's worth the time and there are only 14 episodes so it doesn't take that long either.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Sorry but nothing on network sine M*A*S*H has come anything close to Six Feet Under in the last 40 years. That would just be laughable to claim. Claiming that network can even touch HBO or AMC is just silly. And I think ANY professional critic would agree with me. I mean if you think Law & Order is even close to being on par with The Wire, or Bonanza is as good as Deadwood then you are the cancer killing quality television.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I wouldn't go that far. There are many shows that can rival and perhaps maybe even be even better than those three shows that you mentioned. The Shield from FX, 24 on FOX, Supernatural on WB, ER on NBC, The Sopranos on HBO, Dexter on Showtime, and the list CAN go on....
While your opinion has been heard, it's just that. An opinion.
Yes, a critic would agree with you, but an actual professional critic wouldn't because all it is is a opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm watching Firefly (i'm at episode 9) I love sci fi and action shows but I just don't understand why people are so noisy about it.. It's a normal show, not even one of the best I've seen. It's even boring sometimes. Honestly I'm not surprised it was canceled..

Anyway I voted for Erica because Liz is my fav actress and she is amazing. V is not the greatest show, the writing it's pretty bad actually, but she is always amazing.
I know she is gonna lose this round, and Juliet will lose against Ben for sure *sighs*

    ReplyDelete
  46. You sure do make a lot of assumptions.

I actually don't like shows like 'Law & Order' or 'CSI: Whatever.' They just don't interest me all that much. I gravitate towards well written shows that aren't quite the norm. But none of that matters, as what we were discussing was you being a complete ass to someone just because they don't like the same shows as you.

Having a louder voice doesn't mean you're the only who can be heard.

    Assbutt.

    ReplyDelete
  47. You are totally and completely incorrect. But don't take my word for it, Roger Ebert said it best.

"To the people who sincerely believe "Transformers" is a good, even a great, film. I sincerely believe they are wrong. I don't consider them stupid--at least, not (most of) them.

There is a point when a personal opinion shades off into an error of fact. When you say 'The Valachi Papers' is a better film than 'The Godfather,' you are wrong. We should respect differing opinions up to certain point, and then it's time for the wise to blow the whistle. Sir, not only do I differ with what you say, but I would certainly not fight to the death for your right to say it. Not me. You have to pick your fights.

So let's focus on those who seriously believe "Transformers" is one of the year's best films. Are these people wrong? Yes. They are wrong. Those who think "Transformers" is a great or even a good film are, may I tactfully suggest, not sufficiently evolved. Film by film, I hope they climb a personal ladder into the realm of better films, until their standards improve. Those people contain multitudes. They deserve films that refresh the parts others do not reach. They don't need to spend a lifetime with the water only up to their toes."

If you believe Supernatural or CSI is even in the same league as The Wire, The Sopranos, Deadwood, Breaking Bad, ROME, Six Feet Under, Mad Men or the like, then you have insufficient intellect to see why you are wrong and should look towards growing as a person.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Again, most of what you said is defined as an opinion not a fact...

    ReplyDelete
  49. - When you say 'The Valachi Papers' is a better film than 'The Godfather,' you are wrong.

That sentence right there is an Opinion.

    - We should respect differing opinions up to certain point, and then it's time for the wise to blow the whistle. Sir, not only do I differ with what you say, but I would certainly not fight to the death for your right to say it. Not me. You have to pick your fights.

To pick your battles or as you said, fights, roughly means, to not argue everything, every point, every issue. You are NOT picking your battles. Instead you keep arguing your point further and further to the point that you are using insults to further your so called opinion.

    - So let's focus on those who seriously believe "Transformers" is one of the year's best films. Are these people wrong? Yes. They are wrong.
Again, that right there is an opinion. Do I need to type out what the definition of an opinion is to you??

    - Those who think "Transformers" is a great or even a good film are, may I tactfully suggest, not sufficiently evolved.

Again with the insults. Some could argue that you are sufficiently evolved since you are clearly wrong about what you are arguing about.

    - If you believe Supernatural or CSI is even in the same league as The Wire, The Sopranos, Deadwood, Breaking Bad, ROME, Six Feet Under, Mad Men or the like,

And yet again, that is an opinion...

    - then you have insufficient intellect to see why you are wrong and should look towards growing as a person.

I'm not even going to say what I think...

    ReplyDelete
  50. But my opinion is fact.

Wheel of Fortune is not a better show than The Twilight Zone. That is a fact. Anyone who would say otherwise should immediately report to the nearest ER so they can check for brain activity.

    ReplyDelete
  51. What would be considered to be the best network show on television at the moment?

Because I can assure you the Boardwalk Empire pilot was the best pilot of the fall season so far, hands down.

I would be interested what other people felt was the strongest new show and what shows are considered fan favorites with great ratings and critical acclaim right now. On network particularly.

    ReplyDelete
  52. The next round will be up this evening. :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. With my sufficiently advanced, enlightened, and evolved intellect, may I suggest ignoring him. While I'm sure he won't stop hurling insults, it is less fun for the class bully when the other kids on the playground won't play with him. As my momma says, "If you have to sink to insults, perhaps you don't have anything else on which to stand."

    ReplyDelete
  54. Forgot to add my choices, How stupid of me LOL.

I love Friends. It is one of my fav sitcoms and you can watch it again and again. I choose Dexter because he's a serial killer that you actually root for and it's great to watch that play out on screen and Dexter nails it xxx

I choose Malcolm because he's more of a warm character than Erica and generally funnier but i would choose V over Firefly because it's V xxx

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hi Devo xx Just wanted to tell you what i though of the new shows:

I agree with you on Boardwalk Empire. Loved it and can't wait to see more. Surprisingly i liked Nikita. It reminded me more of the Point of No Return movie with Bridget Fonda And Gabriel Byrne.

I liked Lost Girl. Has a buffy flavour to it so thats a win. I'm in the minority but i enjoyed the gates as a bit of entertaining fluff and because i fancy Luke Mably(i'm a girl LOL). Like Haven and Rubicon and look forward to seeing Hawaii 5.0, and the Event (hoping for another head melter like Lost)

A fan favourite for me is Supernatural, Fringe, Inbetweeners, Gossip girl, Community, Family guy And American Dad. Oh forgot Dexter, never forget Dexter LOL. I like other shows but these are my fav's.

I think Hawaii 5.0 is a fan favourite as well as Boardwalk Empire and The Event. I can't be sure of that though. Thanks for reading and i'm interested to hear what caught your eye xxx

    ReplyDelete
  56. just need to say this cause i missed the vote Sam versus Elena WTF!

Sam should of won that. Sorry guys i watch both shows but if i had to pick one over the other it would be supernatural all the way xxx

    ReplyDelete
  57. Buffy vs. anything is B...oh forget about it. She's already out!

Actually Dean is the only character I would not vote against. Buffy, Booth, Scully, and Abby were close.

    ReplyDelete
  58. FX has pushed more boundaries than any other channel with several very successful shows. That alone makes them better than HBO : )

    ReplyDelete
  59. Is Firefly any good? What other shows relate to it?

    ReplyDelete
  60. The way Firefly is influenced by the US Civil War makes it special to a lot of people. The Confederacy fought for as many noble reasons as they did sinister ones. In Firefly Mal was fighting for liberty and the right to self determination, the same things the Rebs fought for. It has always been my opinion that if The Confederacy had abolished slavery themselves in 1861 then they would have had the moral high ground. It is a very interesting dynamic to have on the show and I think Southerners identify with Mal Reynolds. Firefly gives us a look at what a strong unchecked central government like ours has the potential to mutate into and was fascinating for me to watch.

Some people might realize that The Civil War lead to the end of slavery in America, but it also lead to an out of control federal government that sends our brothers and sisters to die half a world away in places like Vietnam and Iraq. I bet you dollars to donuts that if The Confederacy had survived the war we would never have turned into USA:World Police like we have today.
