It’s official: Mitch Pileggi is returning to Supernatural as Sam and Dean’s presumed-dead grandpa — and not for some one-off guest stint. As I first teased in Ask Ausiello, the X-Files vet will appear on a recurring basis throughout season 6.
“I’m a longtime fan of Mitch’s work,” gushes executive producer/new showrunner Sera Gamble. “And we all thought he did an amazing job the first time around, so we’re excited he was game to [return].”
What brings Gramps back? “For one thing, he’s a Campbell — from Sam and Dean’s mom’s side of the family,” reminds Gamble, “which, unlike their dad’s, has actually been into hunting for a very long time. There’s a whole side of Sam and Dean’s history that they know nothing about. We’ll get to find out a bit about it this season.”
In other Supe news, the show is on the prowl for an actor in his late-30s to mid-40s to play the recurring role of Christian. Described as “capable, calm under pressure, and very good at his job,” Christian has a special relationship to Sam and Dean.

I have to admit, the only episode of Supernatural I've seen is the one Mitch was previously in. After reading this, I've just become a devoted Supernatural fan. :) Yay Mitch!
ReplyDeleteI'm not really into people coming back from the dead (and I know SPN is a supernatural show...), but the writers always come up with a good reason for the return, so I guess I will like it when it is explained...
ReplyDeleteI always liked Grandpa and it is always interesting for the boys to find out more about their family's history, especially on Mary's side of the family. Sam has never met his grandfather, but Dean has, so he will know more than Sam, but learning family history is always a good thing. I am looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see how Gramps comes back. As a spirit guide, angel, or hallucination?
ReplyDelete"Presumed-dead grandpa" sounds like maybe Samuel Campbell didn't die from his knife wound. We were led to believe that possession by the demon Azazel was the only reason he was able to confront Mary and broker his deal. Dean arrived, the demon fled and Grandpa fell to the ground, but what if he survived his injury? Surely an epic falling out would have occurred once Samuel recovered since he'd have known about Mary's deal. Dean didn't even know the names of his maternal grandparents. Mary must not have mentioned them before her death when Dean was 4. John likely never spoke of them to either Dean or Sam. There was mention of an Uncle who paid for Mary's headstone over an empty grave but it sounded like the boys didn't really know that relative either.
ReplyDeleteI loved Directer Skinner so I'm sure to enjoy seeing Mitch Pileggi as a recurring Supernatural character.
Now as for the new character Christian... too bad Christian Kane isn't available to play a part that sounds like it was written specifically for him.
