2 Broke Girls - And the Jessica Shmessica - Review: "Damn You, Jessica!"

In the most recent installment of 2 Broke Girls’ awesome sixth season, Bobby invites Caroline to meet his family over dinner and the entire diner gang decides to join, which stresses out Caroline as she thinks they will embarrass her. Teresa, Bobby’s mom, instantly dislikes Caroline and makes it clear that the entire family prefers Bobby’s ex-girlfriend, Jessica. The dinner proceeds with ridiculous antics, such as Bobby’s sister, Denise, feeling up Han and everyone losing it over Jessica’s pasta sauce recipe. Eventually, Caroline accidentally knocks Jessica’s picture of the wall, but luckily Max is able to fix it. However, the girls aren’t able to stop Sophie from revealing that Bobby’s been sleeping at Caroline’s apartment, angering Teresa. In the end, Teresa accepts Caroline once Bobby expresses just how happy Caroline makes him.

So as we all could have predicted, Caroline meeting Bobby’s family definitely could’ve gone a little bit better. I was so glad to see two obstacles (Bobby’s family and Jessica’s perfection) in their relationship because up until this point, everything has basically been fairy tale perfect and by having this wrench thrown in, their relationship is given so much more depth and moves them into a completely new phase. Not only was Bobby’s family the perfect catalyst for some great Bobby/Caroline development, they also were absolutely hilarious in their own right. Between horny Denise, won’t come out of her room Chrissy, and aggressive mom Teresa, the writers did a really great job of making Bobby’s family fleshed out and colorful. Even more than that, this over the top family mixed really well with Caroline’s try hard attempts at getting them to like her. Overall, Bobby’s family was written and acted excellently and added so much to the Caroline and Bobby relationship storyline. Side note: how excited are you all to meet Jessica after this episode? I cannot wait!

I want to shift gears now and talk about Max. As great as the Caroline, Bobby, and Bobby’s family story was, I think Max (and by extension the rest of the diner gang) absolutely stole the episode with how out of place she was in a middle class home. Seeing Max react to things like furniture as if she was a kid in a candy store was absolutely hilarious and this ridiculous side of her is one we haven’t seen in a while. This season she's been growing a lot through her relationship and break up with Randy and although she’s definitely still been a funny character and I have loved her growth, she hasn’t been as much of the outrageous Max we have seen in previous seasons. The return to Max’s over the top facial expressions and outbursts was a welcomed sight and helped make this episode laugh out loud funny.

One final thing I want to talk about is just how funny this episode was. Although this has definitely been a funny season, I feel like it’s true strength has been the storyline and character development that we’ve seen. Between the M&C Dessert Bar launching, Caroline and Bobby’s relationship, Max and Randy’s saga, and Sophie and Oleg’s baby growing pains, this season has been full of great plot and character progression. This episode, however, had all the usual great development while also making me laugh harder than any other episode this season, making it definitely my favorite episode of this season!

Overall Grade:
A+. Caroline and Bobby’s relationship continued to be compelling with the addition of his family in an episode that had me almost in tears with how hard I was laughing.

Favorite Quotes:
Earl: Oh, I know your boyfriend, Bobby. You name drop him like you’re Gail and he’s Oprah.

Caroline: Okay, fine! The party’s not cancelled, there’s no sinkhole, no one is dead. Come at 4:00 PM. Just please, don’t embarrass me.
Oleg: Uhhh, I think that was directed at you, Max.
Sophie: Awkward…

Max: Hi Bobby’s mom. I’m Max. May I say, you have a lovely house and that’s high praise because I have been in 5.

Bobby: My other sister, Chrissy, she doesn’t come out of her room these days.
Teresa: She’s still in mourning.
Caroline: Oh, over your dad?
Teresa: Over Jessica.

Caroline: Bobby, why didn’t you tell me about Jessica? I told you about my father being in prison…
Bobby: No, you didn’t.
Caroline: …My father’s in prison.

What did you think about this episode? Were you as in love with it as Bobby’s family is with Jessica? Or were you more lukewarm? Let me know in the comments!
