Chicago Fire - Kind Of A Crazy Idea - Review

Things are…well…good between Dawson and Casey, at least, the hour started out that way. But in reality, things are not all good between these two. All the Scrabble in the world won’t solve relationship issues, and these two are swimming in them. It’s not that they don’t love each other, I know they do. They’re just not on the same page and in this episode, I think it’s safe to say they’re in different chapters altogether.

On the first call of the hour, Dawson rescues Louie, one of the most adorable toddlers I’ve ever seen. Louie grows pretty attached to Dawson right away, so Dawson rides to Chicago Med with him. Louie is a foster child, so DCFS comes to take him and hopefully find a home for him. Yeah, you can see where this is headed from a mile away.

After shift, Dawson tells Casey she wants them to foster Louie.
“I can’t get him out of my head, Matt. The way he jumped in my arms…I have a feeling this was meant to be. That everything that happened this year, with us, maybe it all led us here to this little boy.”
Casey is not keen on the idea, and for valid reasons. Much as they try to ignore it, their relationship is struggling. Plus, Casey is swamped with his alderman duties. “I want to have a family with you,” he assures her, and I believe him. Even though he didn’t say it, I think part of him also worries that Dawson isn’t in the relationship 100 percent.

That being said, this is a strange storyline for these two. For the entire series, we’ve seen time and time again how badly Casey wants kids (and what an excellent dad he’d be). And now presented with the opportunity, he chooses not to. And I get that it’s horrible timing for him, but if everyone waited for the perfect time to have kids, no one would ever have kids.

Dawson, still unable to get Louie out of her head, decides to foster him on her own. It’s not so easy though, as the approval process is months long. Louie will be long gone by the time Dawson is approved. I don’t expect her to give up on fighting for Louie, so it will be interesting to see how this all plays out. I loved the callback to the episode earlier this season where Herrmann told Dawson what a great mom she’d make. While I don’t want to see Dawson and Casey break up, I would love to see Herrmann help Dawson with Louie.

Will it continue to drive a wedge between her and Casey? Well, this is a drama, so you bet. Casey even acknowledges this himself after Boden tells him the alderman position opens up a lot of doors.
“Closes some too.”
Can you hear that? No? Well it’s the sound of my heart falling to pieces.

Elsehwere…

After Sylvie strikes out with convincing Otis to get the bloodwork, Cruz gives it a shot. Otis blows him off too, so Cruz is left with no choice. It’s time to bring in Baba. I love Baba! It might have been a bit much, but Baba get it done. Right after shift, Otis (along with Sylvie and Cruz) goes to Med to have the bloodwork done.

Otis doesn’t have leukemia! But it’s not nothing, either. Otis has ITP, a platelet disorder. The disorder won’t keep Otis from his job forever, but he will be sidelined for a bit. I’m glad it’s nothing serious, because even though he’s a minor character, I’ve really loved Otis this season. I can’t help but think though that giving Otis this disorder was done to further a different storyline, like introducing a replacement (who will be labeled temporary, of course) who could stir up drama.

Jimmy and Sylvie respond to a frat house where a guy is in bad shape after drinking a bottle of soy sauce. And once again, that’s about the most interesting thing that happens with these two this episode. When are we going to see some progress? I need more of these two! I know it’s tough to shine the spotlight on each character every week, as it’s a big cast. But really, I’m begging for more of these two.

On the first call, Severide and Cruz almost died trying to save…a life-size Darth Vader bust, which resulted in another great Capp moment. “Great save, guys. Obi Wan taught you well.” Severide doesn’t find it funny, and asks Boden to look into some fancy facemask gear that would help Squad in future similar situations.

After making a few calls, Boden finds out the budget for CFD for the year is gone already. Strange, because the year isn’t even half over. So Severide gives it a shot and discovers the CFD funds were allocated to other places. Naturally, this issue brings in Casey the Alderman who with a few calls, diverts the funds to the new thermal imaging masks.

While trying not to be distracted by a shirtless Severide (good luck with that, girl), Stella works on convincing Herrmann to switch to artisanal ice cubes at Molly’s. After convincing Otis and Dawson to go with the artisanal ice cubes, Stella procures the special icemaker from a friend at a discount price.

The entire hour is basically a prelude to Severide and Stella finally giving in to their amazing chemistry. After Molly’s catches fire because of the icemaker, Stella vows to take on the repairs herself. Late one night after shift, Severide stops by to find Stella struggling, and offers to help. But before either of them can get to work, they give in and close out the hour with a make out sesh. Could this finally be a serious relationship for Severide? I’d be willing to bet that Stella will be a series regular next season, so there’s definitely that potential.

What did you think of the episode? Will Otis’ replacement stir up the drama in the house? How will Dawson’s pursuit of Louie affect her relationship with Casey? Is Severide finally ready for a commitment with Stella? Share your thoughts below!
