The Walking Dead - Remember - Review and Discussion

2 Mar 2015

A couple of weeks ago I was saying I missed the more natural, smaller character moments of the earlier seasons. This week I ate my words.  I absolutely loved this episode! It was filled from beginning to end with wonderful moments as the group found themselves in a place that’s become completely foreign to them – normalcy. There was also humor! Another thing I’ve greatly missed.

There were so many details that put a huge smile on my face. Throughout the episode, my conversation with my TV went something like this: “Oh my God. Rick and Carl have a living room! Oh my God. They have granite countertops! Oh my God. Rick is really going to shave that beard!” On a side note, on The Talking Dead it came out that Norman Reedus (Daryl) kept Rick’s shaven beard and has it in his refrigerator.

There was a lot of care shown on getting the reactions for each of the characters perfect. Daryl bringing “dinner” and skinning it on the porch of his Good Housekeeping home added humor. Daryl will never change, and I love that about him. He was the fish out of water, which made sense since he never would have been comfortable in such a whitebread neighborhood, even before the zombie apocalypse. Daryl, who would be the least comfortable with deception, wore the face of the group’s doubts and skepticism, although it was seen to a lesser extent on the faces of Rick, Glenn, and others.

The funniest moment had to be Carol’s interview: “I always had dinner on the table for Ed when he came home. I miss that stupid, wonderful man every day.” This of course was followed by an admission that the group was “nice enough to protect me,” accompanied by a modest smile. Carol displaying a big smile as she was turning in her gun was the first hint that something was off with her.  The interview that followed later was perfectly delivered. This connects back to season 4 when Carol also put up a facade for the group, which wasn't seen through until Rick figured out that Carol had killed Karen and David.  She’s a woman who’s not above wearing a mask of innocence and helplessness to survive. She probably had a lot of practice in her years being married to abusive Ed.

I loved seeing Carl do a normal teenage boy thing like stalking his crush. Speaking of which, where do you think Enid went after she jumped the wall? Was she going to a specific destination, or was she just needing time out in the open because she was having trouble adjusting within the community?

The various characters’ perspectives being shown as video tapes – like in a documentary – was a great touch, and added to the feeling of the absurdity in seeing this group living again in a normal suburban neighborhood. Glenn's interview, in which he says that they need to make this work because they were almost out there too long, adds solemnity to their situation.  Another nice scene was watching them unload all of their weapons on a rack that looked like it was about to spill over.

Michonne displayed mostly hope, but at the same time her doubts showed when she lied to Deanna about everyone in their group being ready for it, and when we saw that, like Rick, she was having trouble sleeping through the night. Was she suspicious of the new group, or just that their refuge wouldn't last? I’m leaning toward the second, but they're connected. Her doubts about it lasting seem well-founded as Rick looks like he might be the one to bring it crashing down.

I loved how, when Rick and Carl ran into each other at the cabin, Rick didn’t even think to ask why Carl was outside the walls alone. They just understood each other.  They easily fell into their father-son walker-hunting partnership – a scene reminiscent of the two defending the prison walls together in season four.

The group had a nice, victorious moment when Glenn knocked out Aiden, and Deanna took it well.  I still have my reservations about Deanna, as the governor in Woodbury had a habit of saying one thing publicly, but a different thing privately.  The scene with Aiden's group toying with the walker reminded me of the walker in the well in season two, and how the group had become so comfortable that they underestimated the danger.

The big twist of the episode was Rick’s statement that if the group at the Alexandria Safe Zone isn’t strong enough to make it, they’ll take the community from them. Part of him has become Tony from season two, or the governor. Rick seems to be struggling with this though, as the other part of him warned Jessie and Deanna that they should be distrustful of him, and he immediately sets his watch when Deanna gives him the time. The sheriff is still in there. The question now is whether he is now too far gone. The darkness he brought with him was represented symbolically as Rick’s darkened handprint remained on Deanna’s white walls during his visit.

Finally, there’s the mystery of what happened to Rick’s gun. Do you think Enid took it? Or maybe the group's patrols? Aaron had admitted to using surveillance equipment on them when he was following them, so maybe the group isn't as open as they appear.  I also still want to know why Aaron's photos from last week didn't have any pictures of the community's people.

I think that Enid is related to the men that didn't work out and were exiled earlier. She's likely taking them food and supplies. They probably took Rick's gun from the blender and I wouldn't be surprised that they put the walker under the carpeting that grabbed Rick's leg by surprise. It looked like that was a trap.

I don't know too much about the comic series at this point as the source material but I suspect that Alexandria is what it appears: a safe haven. The residents don't necessarily come across as "weak" as Carl and Carol have been saying but they are inexperienced and naive.

It's likely that those in Alexandria have been very fortunate. The conditions in and around the community are such that they haven't encountered large herds of Walkers and they haven't needed to venture too far off to search for safety and resources. Dumb luck. So they're not as experienced and quite frankly: corrupted by the experience of raw survival and the depravity that Rick's group has seen first hand.

Everyone seems to want to distrust Deanna and the Alexandria residents. They're hiding something. They have to be right? Not necessarily. We already went through the "oasis with a dark hidden secret" plots with Woodbury and Terminus. Alexandria might be exactly what it appears.

  2. Episode.......12.......
There are weird, eerie things going on........I believe Deanna, and Aaron have not been totally up front with Rick and think something is going on, not only inside the walls but also outside the walls....!!!
Time will tell, just what the group is up against.......so here we go again another bunch will learn the hard way not to mix with Rick and the group, cross them and you are crossing out your name.........
Carol.....our sweet homemaker is under the care of the group who will protect and keep her safe......
ha, ha, ha, take note if you are smart and wise I would not rile our sweet Carol or you just might get a bullet between the eyes, rumor has it she has done it before.......
    Father Gabriel....where art though ?
Daryl........we are worried about Daryl. I think he may be in danger, hope the group keeps a close eye on him......?
Carl.....is a man in a boy's body......the big different between Carl and the other boy's.....Carl is much smarter, wiser, and knows how to shoot and take out walkers......the others know how to read comics and play games.......not hard to see who will win this round ?
As for Dim and Dum.......these two have no idea about the outside world......they play with walkers,
and treat others with no respect, take note Glenn put him on his ass this time, the next time it could be Rick or Michonne.......they are a danger to the group and could cause a problem for everyone!!!
Rick's gun........who took Rick's gun ? for sure he was being watched, but Rick will find out who took the gun and will get it back, better watch out because you the one in question is going to get more than a slap on the wrist !!!
Well that's how we see it, looking forward to episode 13........

  3. I really didn't like Rick's comment about taking Alexandria over if necessary....it's scary to see him go there in his thinking. These people have done nothing wrong yet he is willing to sacrifice them for his own people/interests.

  4. I can sympathize with Rick, Carol and Daryl's mistrust ......... they have been burned too many times. But, as I've said countless times, Pappa Rick is who I'd want watching my back and the familys !!!

●Carol was just Hilarious ! All sweet smiles and FUMBLING her guns, nice cover
●"I can be a douche bag sometimes " ... truer words where never spoken -Nice punch Glenn
●Who snatched the gun, AND why didn't that walker show up when he put the gun there in the first place? - very suspicious
●Jessie's Creeper hubby on the porch .......... hmmmmm, that didn't seem threatening !
●Deanna's "they didn't fit in" - exiled comment ....... a Daryl foreshadowing? .... she best NOT go there !!
●Enid n Carl ....... curiosity killed the cat OR young love ? lol
●Carol and Daryl's reactions to Rick's ........ they play our way or we will take it !
    ●SOMETHING is amiss in Alexandria

side note: Rick you sure did clean up Purdy ......... yum yummm

  5. That's an interesting theory about Enid. Maybe this will be related to the event that always comes to break up their happy home.

  6. We know they won't stay there forever, so we'll have to stay tuned on how this all goes down. I'm hoping for a new angle, and that they are being upfront, but that there's some other factor that eventually ruins things - other than this being a trick, or Rick ruining it. Thanks for the comments.

  7. That was pretty scary - especially considering these people wouldn't stand a chance of making it for more than a week outside the walls.

  8. That was weird !
Get back to a normal when you have lived a long time during a zombie apocalypse must be very hard. The transition is very well represented in this episode. I am glad they've learned from their mistakes (Terminus and Woodbury) and don't let their guard down. When Carol was talking about her husband and saying how wonderful he was, she looked so innocent, you'd think butter would not melt in her mouth. If Deane knew she was sitting in front of one of the most dangerous and unpredictable person.
People in Alexandria seems weak, they don't know how the outside world, how dangerous it is.
I've got a feeling that the group is being monitored.

  9. I didn't expect to but I absolutely loved this episode.

  10. Well, in the GN, Rick practically becomes the head of Alexandria. Don't worry though, he won't be taking the head position by force. He will come into it.

  11. REALLY liked this episode from beginning to end. I especially love the title, “Remember,” a sobering nod to the once-upon-a-time identities of certain characters (Carol the dutiful housewife; Rick the noble sheriff) and how thoroughly those identities have been burned away. What an interesting twist if this episode actually IS introducing a new gang of dark and shady characters – and this time, it’s none other than the team we've been following all along! For me, this episode proved the validity of Glenn’s statement that they were “almost out there too long.” Maybe we’re being asked to question that “almost” part, at least in a few cases. Because if, in fact, the people of Alexandria really are just a decent, naïve bunch who’ve simply been lucky so far, then Rick’s final statement is a pretty chilling testament to the kind of man he’s become. Very “Breaking Bad,” if that’s the direction TWD is taking --although Shane would be so “hell yeah.” :)

But IF that’s how things played out, I wonder how it might divide the group. Michonne has already opposed Rick once, and I can’t see her following along if he decided to overthrow a bunch of weak but well-meaning citizens. Given their assigned roles, possibly a good cop/bad cop standoff? That could even lead to the first true rift between our core group. Okay nah, shouldn't try to guess that far out.

p.s. How flipping brilliant the way Carol put on her “weak mousey soccer mom” ruse the minute she cleared the gate, without actually telling anyone. Watching her unstrap that huge gun, and her facial expressions throughout the episode, just awesome. Can’t wait to see where they go with that one.

  12. I really liked Daryl joking about Carol when she cleaned up and came out looking like an old lady...I thought this was gonna be a calm episode but things escalated pretty quickly..As always a very insightful review...

  13. Chris:...im surprised u didnt know bout Daryl keeping Rick's beard in his Freezer, lol...i've known since this epi was Filmed back in Aug 2014...i read all the comics and follow the filming spoilers all Year round, lol... let me answer ur questiosn Chris:
---Yes, i think Enid took the Gun, she's the obvious choice unless it was someone we havent seen yet...
---the mystery is still where did she go?...maybe like another poster said, she is involved with the 3 Exiled?
---but for me, i think AMC will Build her up to be a Re-Mix of Sophia cause right now Sophia's storyline in the comics is very Big with Carl so AMC is thinking ahead...
---the main reason Aaron didnt have any pics of the people is that AMC didnt want him to start talking bout the characters before we got to see them, honestly, lol....

now for the Changes from the Comics:
---Deanna is a female leader unlike as it was Douglas a male leader and his wife was Regina and Deanna's husband name is Reg...
---Douglas son's name was Spencer and he was a Douchebag just like TV Aiden, lol...
---Olivia gave Rick his haircut and Not Jessie in the comics...

Carol, Daryl, Tara, Sasha, Noah are NOT in the comics (Carol had been Long Dead by now) so it's nice to see them now in ASZ especially Carol & Daryl...anf FYI Chris, u think Rick's group wont be in ASZ for long???...Think again cause they are STILL there as of this moment, lol...so get ready for a very Long ride there, lol...☺...

  15. On you comment about Daryl, I had similar thoughts except that I was thinking it when Glenn got into the fight. What happens if some work out and others don't? Family or no, if this is really their only chance for a safe haven, I could see some not wanting to leave.

  16. I'm curious how much of all of this Deanna is seeing through (Carol's facade and Rick's trouble with adjusting). She made the comment about being able to read people and it may be accurate. That may be why they're still alive.

  17. I'm clinging to the first part of Rick's comment, "if they can't make it," or something like that. In other words, Plan A is to work with them in peace. I don't think I could keep watching this show if Rick turned into the governor. It would be one pretty awesome twist though - maybe better for a movie that ends after a few hours rather than a tv show that still has several years in front of it.

I can definitely see a conflict coming if some fit in and others don't adjust. Maybe that's the season finale. ;).

LOVED Carol's performance. If Deanna saw through it, I'm wondering what she's thinking about all of them right now.

  18. Thanks. The Darl/Carol scene was awesome.

  19. I really hope so too, Chris! I think that with the writing on display this season, a twist like that could take the show to a pretty dark, borderline-brilliant place -- and I keep remembering Kirkman saying he wants to decentralize to the point that Rick himself would be expendable. But shows like "Breaking Bad" and "Sons of Anarchy" showed the devolution of a main character to such a degree that they became (for me) pretty agonizing to watch. I've always felt like TWD writers want to take viewers to a dark place, but maybe not quite *that* dark?? Hopeful ...

  20. Like many, I've also read the comics but keep making myself "forget" when I can, because I've noticed the current TV team has quite a mind of its own when it comes to changing things up. I notice they like to hit familiar beats and then throw in surprising twists ... so I guess we're all gonna see! :)

  21. Argh!! I sincerely apologize.

  22. I'm still trying to figure out how some saw that as romantic.

  23. Want some crackers with that????

  24. Deanna is hiding something and it bugs me that our group can't catch a break. But the episode was very good. To me it seem that is the slowest episode of the entire series. Everything about the episode was just wonderful. But I think that Deanna thanking Glenn for punching Aiden was part of her plan to draw them in even closer. I wonder if they will flash back and show Rick and Carol taking about playing it "dumb" or was her own idea. (she could of talk to someone other then Rick but if I had to guess I'd say Rick or maybe even Michonne since she one who pushed for the to get to ASZ.) I think if she did on her own would be more brilliant. I do think that Daryl playing the "outside" was a bit over the top and might come back to bit him in the ass with the rest of the group but now how you might think, A well put together episode and really, really hope in the next episode or two we can see the rest of the interviews. And the pace of the story is just fine with me because if they had done it right we should have big punch to the gut with the season finale and season six can start of running.

    As always very nice review.

  25. As usual, this episode was awesome! Did anyone else notice the quick image of a person in that abandoned house next to the gate when the group walked through? I think it was Carl who glanced over and looked at the house as he walked through the gate. Not sure if that was some sort of Easter Egg or not.

I think Enid is helping the exiled people and maybe she even took Rick's gun from the blender at the house. Maybe that image of a person at the beginning of the episode was her or one of the exiled people.

Can't believe that the season is almost over once again....:(

  26. WiseOldMother:...u have a good eye...Yes, that was "Enid" at that house that Carl saw, that's why he recognized her when he saw her later and i agree, i feel that she has Rick's gun not sure bout those Exiled people yet...im sad also only 4 epi's left... :-(

here is the Pic of Enid at that House:

  27. I agree with what you said about Deanna. It felt a little political to me. I'm finding it interesting that she made the choice to bring in Rick's group, which was a huge risk for them. She doesn't stike me as naive. There must be a big threat to them that makes taking the chance with Rick's group the better choice. As I think more about Glenn's fight, she probably went into this expecting issues they would need to work through, and is trying to smooth things over.

  28. I also assumed it was Enid. This season seemed to fly by (not that it's over yet, a lot can happen in a few weeks.)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I watch the show with 6 other people and I always find myself explaining the deeper meaning of what is being said. To them Deanna is just a leader of ASZ and is simply looking to add bodies. But we know better. Like you said Rick's group is the better choice. And no to be mess with right now. But at the same time it could be a bad choice because of what Rick & Co. have been though recently. (Doubt they will go in that direction) But it would be nice to see maybe a small coup before Deanna gives up ASZ to Rick. (If they do that) So many what if's. I'll reply more with your review of tonight's episode. :)
