Helix - Oubliette - Review/Recap

Last episode saw Peter calling the Ilaria corporation, an insane Hatake, and Julia and Sarah both severely wounded on the ground. This episode was an episode of revelations, there was a lot to digest as so many things that I/We have speculated have now been confirmed to be true.

"Of all my daughters you have always been my favourite" Michael

In a clever twist, the show leads you onto believe throughout the episode that Agnes and Michael had an intimate relationship, and that all the woman on the picture wall are people he has been with, but it turns out they are all his daughters including Agnes. I was shocked when they revealed that as I always thought they were past lovers of Michael. They never actually confirmed that the women on the wall are his daughters, but when Agnes said "When I'm gone I will be nothing more than a picture on a wall" it pretty much confirmed it. I don't think Anne is his daughter though as he definitely treated her as if they were lovers, especially how he was touching her.
We also finally learned that Michael is an immortal, after weeks of speculating it. What was curious though is that Michael neglected to tell his people that he wasn't the only immortal out there after Agnes found out about Sarah being one. I think when Michael came to the island 500 years ago he got given the leader position as the cult must have seen him as a god as he couldn't die. He perhaps showed them his "gift" and then told them that he was the only one of his kind; he basically lied his way into power. So he doesn't lose his control he has over the cult he later kills Agnes. Michael must have assumed that Agnes was the only one that knows, and to prevent his followers starting to question him he killed her. The only problem is Amy knows, but I wonder what she plans to do about it, especially when she learns of Agnes's death.

Michael informs Anne and Amy that the pathogen was transmitted through Honey, she said "that's not possible, we took every possible precaution" this confirms that they created it. This means Michael also knew about what was happening, I honestly thought he was helping the CDC team, and knew nothing about it. At this point I have no idea why they would create something this deadly, what do they plan to achieve. I recently said it was to wipe out the immortals, but that theory was blown out the window this episode. The only reason I can think of why the cult created it is they made it as an experimental fungus, and are trying to cure something/find a cure for a disease?

"Don't leave me here" Peter

We saw Peter and Alan confront each other in the oubliette (dungeon) which Michael kindly tossed them both in, at Peter's request obviously. They tried to work out their issues with one another mainly about Julia. They both loved her which is the main reason they hate eachother. I don't believe for a second Peter exposed Alan to Michael to try to get him to work with them. He has wanted to get rid of Alan for a while now, and wants to continue with Ilaria's plans, whatever they might be. Perhaps Michael was one of the first ever immortals, and was one of the very few who started it all. We hear him say when told about Sarah "She wasn't there". He clearly has been an immortal for sometime, and he could possibly hold the answer to how the immortals became to be in existence. It will be interesting if the writers shed some light on the origin of the immortals at some point during the season. Ilaria might see Michael as a threat and sent Peter there to do some reconnaissance work.

I wonder what made Peter start working for Ilaria. The best outcome is that he got approached by Ilaria, and they threatened to harm Alan or Julia if he didn't help them. If that turned out to be true at least he would've been helping Ilaria to protect the ones he loves. He would've redeemed himself a bit for me, but not entirely. Since it's Helix, and everything is always much more complicated I can see him working for them, because they offered him the gift of immortality. During season 1 he said to the Scythe that he was done helping them, so I'm willing to assume they said he would get the CDC team leader job and the gift of immortality later on if he were to help them. Who knows Peter could already be an immortal right under our noses.

I was glad when Alan decided later to leave Peter in the pit, as it's not the first time he has betrayed them. Peter was the one that got Julia captured in the first place which caused the Paris explosion, which caused them to come to the island. If he wasn't working for Ilaria all these events wouldn't have occurred. In my opinion Peter is an unpredictable person who can't be trusted, and I am certain by the end point of this season one of them will be killed by the other ones hand.

This episode was a real game changer, none of the CDC including Alan trusts one another, and the only one that hasn't been lying about something is Sarah, well not yet. Kyle stupidly confronts Alan about his involvement in the Paris explosion, and the arctic bio labs then handcuffs him to a pole. He exposes his own cover so he can get answers from Alan, which was his original mission. Neither of them now can trust one another, and I'm starting to see why the virus is still spreading 30 years into the future. I don't think they will ever solve it now as the team is broken, no one trusts another member. The only person who stands a chance of holding everything together is knocked out in a bed. Things are not looking good for the team.

Other notes:
- We learn that Sarah's baby is alright, did the stab wound kick-start the growth?
- Is Kyle FBI? Who is he really? He doesn't work for Ilaria or the CDC so who is he with?
- What happened to the Scythe from Season 1?
- Why were the people outside the gate trying to attack Kyle when they didn't seem infected?
- Why does Amy all of a sudden want to get of the island? I think Amy caused the pandemic by bringing the honey of the island
- There is probably more than one hive, which would mean more than one source as Kyle was getting samples from bee's on a roof last episode.
- I was right about Caleb coming to save Julia.
- Caleb seemed awfully interested in Hiroshi's sword. Where did he go after taking the sword?

Summary
"Oubliette" was this season’s most revealing hour yet, we found out so many things relating to the cult including that Michael was an immortal, and that Agnes was his daughter. We also learned that Kyle was a mole, and that Sarah's baby is healthy. The show continues to surprise me with it's twists, and reveals, and Helix has become one of Syfy's best shows. It's a shame the ratings aren't reflecting how good the show has been this season.

Sorry for the brief review, haven't got a lot of time at the moment. Will discuss the episode further in the comments.

As always, thank you for reading! Let me know in the comments what you thought of the episode!

  1. What did you think of the episode?

I find the discussion much more interesting than reviewing the episode!

  2. Definitely, I don't see halve of them coming, if any. Every episode I'm always wondering what might happen next.

  3. Hi!

I was actually thinking that Anne could be Amy's mother. "My three favorite girls" could also mean lover as well. If she was Amy's mother then it would link in with what I said about them being together at one point. Michael has had all these daughters so he obviously would've been with woman. But I guess the girls might not have been conceived the normal way so he might not have been with a woman.

Obviously it's not the CDC teams fault, they never brought the virus with them since it was already of the island. I reckon that Amy is behind it, and Landry brought the people on the boat Honey when they came to the island, as we know he would do anything for her. The honey could have made them sick, which is where it began. Leyla probably didn't have any, and just went into hiding(Which we know).

Amy did take a sample of Honey. If it does contain the pathogen she probably wants to release it into the world, but who knows what her reasons could be. Amy is the smartest out of all of them, and can easily manipulate people, so it would make sense if she started it all. It seems very sudden that she wants to leave, maybe because the CDC are closing in on the truth, and the truth might uncover what she has been doing (If she is behind it).

They never mentioned anything about what happened to their father, I don't think it's Michael as surely they would remember his face, since he doesn't age. Hopefully we can learn why Peter decided to join Ilaria, there must have been something big in it for him if he has to betray his brother.

Interesting theory about Kyle. I don't really want him to be with Ilaria as then it would be getting a bit ridiculous with Balleseros, Julia, Peter and him working for Ilaria. They can't all be. He is probably FBI investigating Alan, but I wonder if he at least knows what's going on with the immortals.

Ugh, I'm really annoyed as I never saw the promo and can't find it anything online, so not too sure what the bombshell is.

  4. It's not that I don't think that Amy could be Anne's mother and Micheal's daughter at the same time, we gathered from Agnes that they do carry babies to term, but rather it seems like sexual relations is taboo. Even as Amy rewards Laundry, she uses gloves, which despite my dislike of this conversation on that subject, could be a fun pun on sterilization! Somehow the immortal genes have not been passed!

You're right Alan & Peter should recognize Michael (duh on my part :p ), which is why I said he could maybe be another relative (an Uncle or a Great Grandfather) that they never knew they had. I'm just thinking because of the All Access "M." Document, that if that is M for Michael, then he certainly has contact with the outside world (ala Ben Linus) and it wouldn't surprise me if he has taken leave from time to time in order to have everything he needs. He's the one who I thinking is keeping a really big secret.

I'm still hoping that Peter and Alan will reconcile their differences or come to be on the same page again before the season ends. The problem is we also don't know why Alan is here. Part of me thought maybe he was looking for Julia, but so far we don't have any confirmation that she has been on the Island at this time period.--which the synopsis for 2.06 makes things sound tricky:

    SPOILER Warning Episode 2.06 Synopsis
"On the heels of Agnes' death, Amy creates an outbreak of the disease, while Michael torments Peter in the pit. Alan, Jordan and Kyle discover the truth about the Abbey's tainted food chain but Alan is drugged and attacks Jordan. An uprising at the Abbey threatens the safety of the uninfected. Meanwhile, in present-day Paris, Walker summons Balleseros and is guided to meet an unlikely immortal who may hold the key to her mission."

So this mission of that Julia's past or Julia's present? If it's her current time period, then scope of the show is really opened!

  5. The one thing I hope to find out is how the "Immortals" started, their origin. Michael must have been their when everything first started as he says to Agnes when talking about Sarah "She wasn't there" which indicates there was an event that happen, which perhaps tells us that he was one of the people that started it all. How we don't know yet.

Michael probably does have contact on the outside, as when the CDC team arrived he knew all of there names. He couldn't have just got the information, someone must have given it to him. The question is who? It has to be someone in a position of power to obtain information so quickly.

I'm not sure why Alan is on the island I too thought he was there for Julia, but like you after reading the synopsis I don't think she ever came to the island during in the past. It has to be the Present day, Alan's timeline is the past. Then again it mentions Paris, and if Alan blew up the building how can they meet there, unless they rebuilt. I'm starting to think also now that Balleseros has become an immortal.

  6. I def think Michael was there in the beginnings of the Immortals, but Ilaria strikes me as a corporation that is full of various black ops "projects" that maybe only certain people have full access to, but they do appear they are not directly apart of it. Maybe "M." will turn out to be Kyle instead of Micheal, because that document that CW obtains mentions Amy, as if this person was just introduced to her...Interestingly the next episode title is "M. Domestica" and I think that is when Kyle's secret is suppose to be revealed...

That synopsis really has me confused LOL! It actually says it's 'Present Day Paris' and I'm assuming that is meant for Balleseros, since we already know he's there at some new head quarters--So like you said, it seems like they rebuilt it!! (I think there is too many documents on the Access Granted site and also Alan seemed to confirm it, so I doubt the bombing could of been fabricated) But the synopsis also says Dr. Walker is "summoned", which may suggest she is not necessarily in Paris. So my thoughts were something like either a piece of technology to communicate, which we know Peter's phone works so there must be a power source on the Island ( and I think I noticed a large screen behind Bellesros in the promo) or something we didn't know immortals in which they can do telepathically?!

The only other thing that would make any sense is if the synopsis is wrong and the Bellesros and Julia part is a flashback prior to the second season and not really present day....but so far, her current story doesn't seem to revolve around finding an immortal, unless Alan becomes one?!

Anyways, as always, nice chatting with you! Who knows how this will play out! With 8 more episodes to go, a lot could still happen! :D

  7. Ha, everybody is working for someone. Even Balleseros

  8. Kyle's true identity will for sure be revealed next episode, and when him and Alan talk it out. Alan wants answers, and Kyle wants answers so it will be interesting to see some scenes between them.

IIaria must be a much more complex company than we first thought they seem to have a lot of influence around the world, and also have a lot of side projects ongoing. I wonder if we will ever see who is actually the real head of Ilaria. I would like to know.

They probably are flashbacks as we have been seeing a lot of them recently during this season. Most likely the time around the finale when we saw Julia at the head of the table in the Ilaria building. Balleseros probably went straight there after the explosion. So there meet could take place straight after events at the arctic.

  9. Thanks for the review, season 2 is on fire right now. For me like your said Robert, I think Agnes, Amy and Anne are related of each other. The community they made clear that women could have sexy with others men, so I think Michael have lovers and not daughters.

  10. It's a shame the ratings are reflecting how good the show has been this season.Did you mean "the ratings are not reflecting"?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yep, I did. Changed.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Well it got confirmed that Agnes was his daughter, but I'm not too sure still about Anne or Amy.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think Agnes, Anne, Amy, and the other ladies are not only Michael's daughters, but also his lovers and they are daughters of the previous lady.

  14. Kyle was my favorite character but now I want to kill him myself. Texas my ass

By the way, I found this at syfy.com/helix/accessgranted:

  15. It's very confusing, hopefully we will come to learn more about his family history and perhaps some solid confirmation about Anne and Amy.

  16. That's very interesting, I saw that earlier. He was sent to investigate, but why whoever he is working for cares so much about the Ilaria bombing makes me curious as to whether he is somehow tied to them (Ilaria) without him knowing.

  17. Wikipedia:M. domestica may refer to:
Malus domestica, the apple tree, a plant species
Monodelphis domestica, the gray short-tailed opossum, a mammal species
Musca domestica, the housefly, a fly species

  18. The synopsis says, "Walker summons Balleseros." Not the other way around.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Because Helix, like many shows have word play such as puns and double entendre...If you see the the Access Granted Helix page, which has an up coming character introduced, there are documents given, including e-mail, communications/messages, and letters to other Ilaria members, and advertizements (like a cruse liner "Avon Mist" that was infected by the fungus, in which Ilaria was able to get one of the bodies), anyways, on of the messages from day 4, which is was commenting on Amy and "seraphim breath", was from someone named "M." --It stands to reason that if it is noe Michael, then it is Kyle, as he is the one that has gotten the closest to Amy and who's cover should be revealed!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Thank you, but not the point I was making, it's about the fact that either one of them can be "summoned" in relation to the time period specified in the synopsis. The synopsis also says that Julia is the one on a mission to find a certain immortal because she is guided (presumably by SB)

  21. I think they are all Micheal's children. He refers to them as "my children" and we never met the boys' fathers.
