NCIS: Los Angeles - Humbug - Review: "A Holiday Gift for the Fans"

17 Dec 2014

Ahhhh, finally. It feels good to end an episode being really excited about what you just watched. And “Humbug” elicited that response. It offered the sweet sounds of a symphony, with all of the different instruments working harmoniously together to create a beautiful piece. This episode really offered something for everyone. Whether you love Kensi and Deeks, Callen and Sam, or Eric and Nell, it was easy to find something to love. The episode utilized all of the main characters and gave fans of each a special treat for the holidays.

There’s no doubt the holiday spirit was in the air – the episode felt like a present wrapped up in a nice little bow. Thankfully, the producers and writers of “NCIS: Los Angeles” were not in a “humbug” mood themselves. They were in a generous, giving spirit – and fans were on the receiving end.

There was so much to be happy about this week. For a long time I have wanted to see a glimpse of the characters’ personal lives. This week I got my wish. We got to see them with their families, their significant others, and together outside of work. It made the episode feel extra special. Having the case of the week revolve around the main characters was also a great move. That made you care more about the outcome and what they were doing along the way. And I loved that the episode dealt with the team members’ holiday plans. Hearing their vacation plans was fun – as if we were getting a peek behind the scenes. Plus, the episode emphasized how much of a family they really are. On top of all that rang the sweet sound of resolution. The Deeks and Kensi limbo has finally been resolved. The show has made a decision about their future instead of wavering back and forth – and it was a gratifying decision for Densi fans. With all that to talk about, beware: This review is a long one!

Callen
I loved how much we got to see of Callen’s relationship with his girlfriend Joelle. It’s about time Callen got a little love in his life! After only seeing their first introduction/date – and later being told they were still dating – it was great fun to see how close they really are. With Callen being such a private person, that inside look was fascinating. It looks like Sam and Michelle’s set-up really panned out.

One of the things I loved was seeing how much Callen wanted to protect Joelle. As soon as he finds out what happened to her, he immediately wants to rush to her side and make sure she’s okay. And at her house he is extremely meticulous (and inventive) in trying to keep her attention away from the windows and what is happening outside. He doesn’t want her to know she’s in any danger.

Callen was also incredibly sweet. When he shows up at her house, he brings groceries and wine, telling her he is going to cook dinner for her. (She is amused since he can’t even fry an egg.) Then he turns on some music so she can’t hear any outside sounds and starts dancing with her to keep her attention focused on him. It was clever and cute. This was a different, loving side of Callen that was nice to see. I don’t imagine Callen liking to dance much, but in this moment he showed a romantic side to keep her mind at ease. All of this showed how much he cared.

But that is complicated by the fact that Joelle doesn’t really know what Callen does for a living. She thinks he is a securities trader. He has a cover to maintain and can’t tell her the truth. This episode made me think how difficult it would be to not be able to tell somebody what you really do. Your job is part of your life and how you spend a large majority of your time. To have to hide that from someone you love would take a toll. You can see its effects on Callen. He feels guilty about having to lie to Joelle. For a closed-off, private person, keeping secrets like this would make a relationship even more challenging. Because of his background and upbringing, Callen is already someone who keeps his distance with people, taking time to trust them and let them close. So keeping secrets could easily be used an excuse not to allow himself to get closer. That’s why I loved that his secret was revealed in the end. It enabled Callen to be able to draw closer to Joelle and move forward with her. This will be a huge burden off his shoulders. Now he can truly let someone into his life and trust them with his secrets.

Of course, Joelle has a hard time trusting Callen after learning the truth and feeling deceived. She feels she doesn’t really know him. And obviously he has lied to her about what he does. Calling him a “humbug” – a fraud, an imposter – is not an easy thing for him to hear. But I love that he didn’t give up. He leaves her a voicemail message reaching out to her. Whatever he says, it works. She shows up at the ice-skating rink and gives him another chance. I loved how he lit up with just a look as he understood her intentions of wanting to get to know the real him. He is thrilled to have that second chance. And he really wants her to meet his “family.” That was a precious moment that brought tears to my eyes. For Callen, his NCIS team is really his family – the people he cares about who always look out for him. You see how much it means to him to introduce Joelle to them. As the two glance over to the group talking and laughing amongst themselves, they really do look like a family. Their bond was undeniable. Even though Joelle isn’t ready for that yet, at least he reached out and asked. And amidst that dramatic moment, I love that the scene (and episode) ended on a comical note as Joelle wants to know his first name. Too bad it’s not that easy for “G.” He can’t help but laugh as he replies, “That is a little bit complicated.”

Woven through Callen’s entire storyline with Joelle was a great theme – that of being “safe” in a relationship, of not taking a step forward and really putting yourself on the line and risking your heart. Joelle couldn’t express her feelings for Callen enough to buy him a personal gift. She wanted something that said, “You’re the most important person in my world,” but instead she bought him something safe, practical and unemotional. She was afraid of taking that next step that would show how much she cared and was invested in their relationship.

But after realizing this, she later does open up and take a risk by telling Callen she loves him for coming to be with her after her scare. Callen doesn’t answer, looking at first a little surprised and then guilty at having to lie about why he was there. I think her openness with him emphasized how he was not returning the favor. But later, with his secret out in the open, he took steps away from the “safe zone” as well. Leaving her a message, asking to introduce her to his “family” and being willing to reveal himself were all pieces of proof that he was willing to take a risk with his heart to try to keep her in his life.

Kensi and Deeks

That is the same issue Kensi and Deeks have been struggling with themselves. They have been playing things “safe” for a while now. They’ve made it very clear they like each other. But they haven’t been willing to take a risk to move forward. After going back and forth between them, Kensi recently has been the one to hold back, flirting with Deeks but not allowing them to really be a couple. (Yes, I now believe these two were not a full-on couple before this moment. This episode made that clear. And I also realized through enlightening comments a couple weeks ago that Kensi’s stealing of Deeks’ breakfast food in “Traitor” likely happened at work, not at home. So it didn’t imply as much as I thought.)

In fact, I believe the reason viewers were so confused about their status to begin with was because the characters were confused as well. They liked each other but were holding back. They wanted to move forward but yet they were scared. One minute one of them was ready, another minute the other one was. And it became a game. They partly acted like a couple because their feelings led them in that direction, but their heads were telling them to stop. So in essence they were getting their toes wet without jumping into the pool. But they didn’t realize as time went on, they kept wading deeper and deeper into the water. They were trying to stop themselves from having a full-on relationship while in reality they were still naturally heading in that direction. They were getting closer while trying not to be together. The boundaries were constantly being crossed, which left things hazy and murky – for them and us. We didn’t know what was happening because they didn’t know. I must say, I still think it was a great disservice to the viewers to string us along for this amount of time, but at least now I understand why the relationship was so confusing to fans. Kensi and Deeks themselves didn’t know how to define their “thing,” so why would we?

After all of that confusion and wondering what was going on between them, it made it extra sweet to finally see a decision. And it was nice to see Kensi thinking about what she wanted throughout the episode. Of course, we didn’t always know what she was pondering, but the groundwork was laid. Joelle’s thoughts were making Kensi reconsider her situation. Twice Kensi and Deeks talked about Joelle. First they comment on how crazy it is that Joelle can’t tell Callen how she feels about him or give him a gift that says she cares. As they lament the sadness of the situation, it’s very interesting to hear Deeks say, “Life’s a little short for that kind of hopscotch.” I thought that was a great line - and an ironic one. Kensi and Deeks both acknowledge that it makes no sense to jump all over the place without expressing real feelings, yet realistically that is what they are both doing with each other.

Then later when they are in the car together Kensi mentions that their job tends to ruin any chance of having a personal life. She is clearly struggling with the thought. It’s a view she’s expressed before. But Deeks sees things a lot simpler. He believes their upcoming snowboarding trip together is proof of their personal life. But Kensi believes it is simply convenient – they have the same days off and can easily travel together. Doing something with Deeks just because it’s convenient is beginning to bother her. That is not much of a personal life.

By the time she talks to Deeks at the ice-skating rink, Kensi has had time to think about this. And she has realized she doesn’t want things between them to be “safe” any more. She doesn’t want the relationship to be convenient. She doesn’t want them unable to take a risk for each other. She has finally understood that to be together, they need to go “all in.” Otherwise they are doing themselves a disservice. As she points out, if they’re holding back, they are not even fully being themselves with each other. In a great speech, she acknowledges that alone they are individually bold and brash – they can move mountains by themselves. But together they are safe. They don’t put everything on the line and don’t take a risk to let the other know how important they really are, despite the fact they are naturally risk-takers. They have played it safe instead of jumping in. And Kensi is finally ready to jump. As she grabs Deeks’ hand in her own, she tells him she wants to be bold with him. Deeks immediately understands what she is saying. He clarifies that they are agreeing not to play any more games – that they are putting all their chips on the table and going “all in.” And in that moment there is total joy. As they start to talk like a couple mentioning every moment they will be “all in” together, Deeks can’t wait for Kensi to finish her thoughts as he grabs her and kisses her. This is what he has been waiting for and he doesn’t want to wait any longer after knowing she is ready. As they pull apart both of them have huge smiles on their faces and Kensi shows a slight nervousness that reveals her vulnerability. It was great to see this side of Kensi, normally so sure of herself. In that moment she was vulnerable with Deeks, letting him in and risking her heart. This was the scene Densi fans have been waiting for – and though we waited a long time, it paid off! The scene couldn’t have been any better.

I even liked how Deeks tried to skate away from her when she first told him she wanted to talk. The fact that she had to work to gain his full attention made it even more impactful. She had to take a risk just to approach him about the subject. And when she finally had him there, taking the next step was a scary leap. But though she grew more and more nervous, she didn’t chicken out. She expressed her feelings bravely.

It is also interesting to note the place they had this conversation: an ice-skating rink, an important parallel to “The Frozen Lake.” In that episode, Kensi was worried about wanting something so much (a relationship with Deeks) that it destroys you in the end, using a metaphor of a frozen lake. In the metaphor, the desired object was in the middle of a frozen lake you thought you could reach without cracking the ice – but you are so focused on it, you don’t realize the ice is already falling apart around you. In Kensi’s mind it was very dangerous to want something so much it’s all you could see. She feared it would inevitably destroy them. So it’s significant that this new step forward took place on an ice-skating rink, a symbol of abandoning those fears and being willing to stand on the ice, being willing to risk any cracks and being confident they can make it without everything falling apart. Kensi is no longer thinking about all the dangers a relationship could create. She isn’t thinking about cracking the ice. She is willing to go out on the frozen water and take a step toward Deeks and see what happens.

Sam

I was entertained by Sam’s frustration with having to spend Christmas in San Francisco with his wife’s sister and her three cats in a very small place. He wanted time alone with his family, which showed his devotion to them. But when Callen questions him about why he just doesn’t tell his wife Michelle the truth, Sam laughs that Callen doesn’t understand marriage at all. I thought that was amusing considering how true it was.

It was nice to see Sam’s entire family in this episode. In the past it’s been hard to figure out how many kids Sam has because they don’t all live together. His youngest daughter (Kam – we finally heard her name, short for Kamran) lives at home, while his older son Aiden (whom we’ve never seen before) is in military school. In this episode we learn he hasn’t seen his son in three months because he didn’t get to come home for Thanksgiving. He was too busy working hard to become a cadet sergeant. Just like last week, we saw Sam questioning whether a young high school kid should be so serious. But that is clearly what his son wants.

Later when his wife Michelle gets the whole crew together to go ice skating (what a sweet thing for her to do), she gives Sam the best gift possible – bringing his son home for the holidays. Aiden has been promoted to cadet sergeant and his father is very proud of him. It was the perfect gift and a touching moment for Sam. And it was nice to finally see his whole family together.

Nell and Eric

Nell and Eric fans got a treat this week as the two talked about their own holiday plans. I love that they were planning to spend a holiday weekend together watching a Christmas horror movie festival. How unique! I love it when these two share similar quirky interests. So when Nell canceled their plans to go home early to see her family, Eric was disappointed but he understood. He knew what it meant to her to be able to go home. But then comes the big shocker: Nell suggests he come home with her. I was surprised at the offer – meeting the family is a big step. But it was a fun decision. And I loved the hilarious comic timing of Eric almost shocking himself on his electronic equipment as he hears her words.

I also loved his planning for the big trip. Thinking ahead, Eric realizes he will need a cover story since Nell’s family thinks she is a news editor. So he figures he can pose as a photojournalist (by day and a superhero at night. Very funny). Again, the comedic timing was perfect when Nell says his cover story will need to be more believable – and a boyfriend would be even better. Wow – that is bold! And again, Eric inadvertently sets off his camera flash with a nervous jolt at the suggestion. That is one holiday visit I would really like to see. There is no going back from pretending to be a couple in front of your parents. But the fact that Nell was willing to suggest it says volumes about where they stand with each other. (Even though, like Kensi and Deeks, I think these two have been too nervous to take the real jump.) As Eric leaves, it’s hilarious to see how much “Mr. No-Pants” has an aversion to long pants. Even going back East, he thinks all he needs will be a scarf with his shorts. Good old Eric.

Hetty and Granger

Hetty was hilarious in this episode as she helped interrogate the founder of the company whose malware had been stolen. I loved how Hetty sat very close to him on the same side of the table, intimidating him without any words. It amused me how such a small woman he didn’t even know could be that intimidating. But that is Hetty. And then she threatened to drop him in a prison until people found out the mistake. Linda Hunt was great in this scene.

Later we even get to see Granger as he made his way back from the hospital. He and Hetty had a funny conversation about him being a Grinch (perfect description) after he wants to work over the holidays. I loved how when Hetty claimed he must have a heart, he said he wouldn’t tell her where it was for his own personal safety. Knowing their history, I don’t blame him. And Hetty didn’t, either. These two have some nice moments together. This was one of them.

Other thoughts

- Poor Callen would have received a dress shirt and tie for Christmas if he hadn’t been able to tell Joelle the truth. Can you imagine Callen having to pretend he wears a suit every day to work? That made me laugh.

- I was amused by how Deeks just had to get information out of Joelle beyond the facts of the criminal case. He was a little sleuth. And he had a great suggestion for a gift: a leather gym bag for Callen. How perfect!

- I was totally grossed out when one of the Santa suspects offered to give Kensi some “indecent exposure.” Yuck! She handled herself very well, though. Better than I would have!

- I liked the scene where Deeks asks Kensi to go on vacation with him. I thought it was funny that he accidentally insulted her by saying, “There’s a great hotel up there that takes dogs if you want to come,” and then it was cute that he claims he’d discussed it with Monty. But most of all I thought this scene was a perfect example of the partners being “safe” together. After accepting the invitation, they had an adorable awkward moment highlighting the fact that they were purposely trying not to act like a couple. They high-fived each other about making “holiday plans.” Then Kensi deflected to talking about the case. It was pretty amusing – and drove home the point of the strangeness of where they stood with each other.

- Did you notice that Callen has a key to Joelle’s place? And I thought it was pretty funny how she grabbed a vase as a weapon when he came in. How convenient since Callen had brought her flowers!

- It was entertaining and comical to see Callen simultaneously dance and watch Kensi attack the man outside Joelle’s home.

- I actually thought Callen had been shot in the chest when the man shot his gun away. Thank goodness it was only a gash on his hand.

- Watching Deeks hold Kensi’s hand as they skated was a little twitterpating (especially not knowing what else was coming yet). He was quite the skater, going backwards and pretending to be an expert ice skater, wanting to do triple Salchows. Deeks is a definite show-off!

- I look forward to seeing more of Densi going forward. I actually don’t think being a couple will change them too much at work since we’ve already seen them so flirty with each other for a while. But I imagine that snowboarding trip will be a little different now that they are officially together!

I have only seen a dozen episodes of this show, and this was the best I've seen. I can finally watch it now that Blacklist isn't on

I'm glad you liked it. I have to say this episode was the best all season! But definitely worth watching!! :)

  3. I definitely thought this was the best episode the show has had in awhile. I loved that the character's personal lives came front and center. The case being secondary was just fine with me. Its always been the characters that have set this show apart from other crime dramas in my opinion. Having the chance to go inside their personal lives was awesome. Of course, as a Callen fan I found this episode just as squeeworthy as the Densi shippers did. There has been one question I've been wondering about with Callen and Joelle. If their relationship has gone as far as Callen having a key to her place, wouldn't she have seen his bullet scars by now? How did he explain those away? That's a question I would ask the writers about. I know, I think of the most random things sometimes. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this episode and hope we get more like it.

I totally agree about it being the best episode in quite awhile - and loving the chance to go inside their personal lives! And I also think the characters are the best part of the show. You're so right - Callen fans definitely got lots of squeeworthy scenes in this episode!! He was so cute with Joelle, I loved it! I don't know the answer to your good question, though. Haha. I see what you mean. I don't know how he would have explained those bullet scars away. I love random questions. ;) I'm so glad you enjoyed the episode. I hope we get more like it, too!

Haha, I think you're right about that! ;)

  6. Great review. Imo this was one of the best episodes they've done. Everything just clicked. And ofc Densi made it even better.

  7. I loved this episode. it was by far my favorite of the season. I really loved getting a glimpse into the characters personnel lives. it was so nice to see Callen and Joelle together. I hope they keep her around. it will be a lot more interesting to see Callen navigate his job with a relationship with a school teacher rather with someone in his line of work.
I was so so happy to finally find out that Sam has 2 kids. I've been confused about how many he has. references to his kids have been made in many episodes but then you only ever heard about his daughter. nice to finally know there are two.
I too liked the Kensi and Deeks moments. . I know I'm probably the only one that feels this but I dont' see a lot of passion in their kissing scenes. seems like two good friends kissing. I'm not sure if its because I know they are in-laws or because they know they are in-laws but it seems awkward. But in spite of it, I do like them together and was glad to see a resolution.

  8. I thought "FINALLY" after the end of this episode, it was brilliant! Finally, Kensi and Deeks are going somewhere, finally, Callen moves on with his life and gets serious in his relationship! He looked so hurt when Joelle called him a fraud!! I hope we see more of them in the future, Callen getting some stability and having relationships outside of work is great!

I think Sam's son is just dropping out of nowhere since I don't remember him ever mentionning him. Just like last week, when Callen didn't know Sam had gone to a military school, they have been partners for years now, it's a thing Callen should have known. I think it's just plain bad writing...

  9. I think it was in Season 2 when Sam was interrogating someone and he mentioned he had kids, yup, plural. At that moment it cut to Callen, Kensi, and Deeks in the outer room watching the interrogation and K&D looked at Callen and said, in essence, kids? And Callen nodded knowingly. So that part was mentioned, once, but every other time it has only been his daughter spoken of. As far as Callen not knowing Sam had gone to military school, yeah, that's bad writing.

  10. So excited for this review. I have been patiently waiting. Time to read it:)

  11. Can I tell you how much I like Joelle with Callen? I really hope they give this relationship a chance to grow. Chris O'donnel is a movie star and that really showed in these scenes with Joelle. I know later in the episodes they are planning on giving Callen someone new but I hope they don't. I really like him with Joelle and I totally understand why she was so upset with him lying to her. Callen and Sam can walk around LA handing out their cards, Deeks and Kensi can go to professional basketball on Television yet Callen can't tell his girlfriend he works for the Government? I kind of don't understand that. Maybe not all the details but I work for NCIS. Don't understand why this is an issue at all. My cousin works for the FBI and she's not a spy.lol but we know about who she works for.

  12. Excellent recap and analysis as always. This was easily the best episode of the season so far. I loved getting to see some more personal stuff about all the team members, and of course all the shippy goodness. Callen and Jo, Kensi and Deeks, Eric and Nell - all so, so adorable. Naturally the Densi kiss put the biggest grin on my face, but there was plenty of "aww"ing at the others. Loved finally getting to see Sam's kids too.
This one is definitely getting a rewatch over the hiatus - or the last 5 minutes, at least. ;)

  13. I am a happy camper that we got to see Deeks and Kensi get together because I was very much ready to stop watching if this scene had not taken place in front of my eyes. I am glad they were not hiding a relationship ( a conclusion I have jumped too but I still believe to be fact)

I also think you hit the nail on the head when you said

"I believe the reason viewers were so confused about their status to begin with was because the characters were confused as well."

If the producers had played it this way all along I might not have been as mad as I have been about the way things were shown to us over the last 10 episodes. It is a brilliant conclusion I expect the producers to adopt as their excuse sometime down the line. You should sue if they do because they totally stole your idea. Really I can't express how much your idea makes perfect sense.

  14. I can't help but thinking about the subtext of the title, "Humbug," and how it applies to all the characters. Impostor, fraud... certainly that applies clearly to Callen's situation with Joelle. He hasn't been open about his real identity, though it appears as if he now wants to be. I have to wonder how often he'll be forced to keep her in the dark. Will he at least be honest enough to tell her openly when there is something that he just can't share?
But the title is more interesting when I think of the other characters. Clearly both Michelle and Sam are frauds, not as they appear to their friends or even their kids, though they presumably are who they seem to be to each other. And Hetty and Granger are certainly the epitome of impostors, fakes with multiple identities, and who knows who they really are.
When it comes to Nell and Eric, obviously they are not the news editor and photo journalist that Nell's family is expecting. And is Eric really Nell's boyfriend, or is that just another case of being an impostor?
That leaves us with Deeks and Kensi. We know from Traitor that Deeks knows many of the superficial details of Kensi's life, but she did not even know about his close friend the basketball star in Reign Fall. What else does she (or the audience) not know about Deeks? The showrunners have been promising us some Deeks backstory for what seems like years now - are we going to find out that he's a fraud, a humbug? I just wonder if there is more to the title than just a holiday reference.

Thanks so much! I also think it was one of the best episodes they've done. Like you say, everything clicked - and Densi added to the enjoyment (lots)! Thanks for the comments!

Thanks, Stephanie. I think it was the best episode of the season, too! All the pairings were so fun. Adorable is a great word for it! Loved it all. And the Densi kiss also put a big grin on my face! But like you point out - plenty to "awww" about with the others because there were so many great moments! Hey, I thought of you when we heard Sam's daughter's name - Cam. I don't know why it took so long to name her but at least we finally got it! It was nice to finally see his kids. That last 5 minutes is definitely worth a re-watch again!!! I think I'll join in. ;)

Hey Ann! Wasn't it fun to have such a great episode?! This was definitely my fave of the season, too! No contest. It's so wonderful when we see their personal lives. I also hope they keep Joelle around. Callen was so cute with her, wasn't he? She really adds a different dimension to him. I love your point that her being a teacher is so much more interesting for him than someone in his line of work. I agree with that. I was thinking that she was a good match for him. Her normalcy will do our Callen good, I think. It will really keep him grounded. I like that dynamic.

It WAS nice to find out for sure that Sam has two kids & actually see them. Others have also expressed confusion on that topic. Someone said he mentioned a son way back in season 2 but then never again. So it's nice to know.

Interesting how you felt about Densi's kiss. I quite liked it myself but those things always work differently for different people. It definitely was nice to finally get a resolution, though. That was a long overdue wait. ;)

You & I had the same thought after the episode! Finally! It's so true. Finally for Kensi & Deeks (wow, really - finally!) & finally for Callen, too. I thought Chris O'Donnell was fantastic in the episode. He did look so hurt by Joelle. COD is great at expressing so much with just a simple look. I love it! I hope we see more of them, too! Stability for him would be such a wonderful thing - and a relationship outside of work!

I didn't know about the son, either. So glad to hear Louise give us some background. :) I also think it's weird when they suddenly come out with important background information that everyone (including the characters) should have known by now. But I'm glad they cleared up the confusion about the son by actually showing him! Thanks for your comments.

Thank you for that background on Sam's kids. I never remember things past a year ago. Lol. That was very helpful. :)

Hey Owen. Thanks so much for the generous words about my review. That was sure sweet - it made my night. :) Yes, it can be hard to get fired up about ho hum episodes - but thankfully this wasn't one of those! They really did hit it out of the park! Yes, it was nice, as you mention, to have the case revolve around the characters instead of the other way around. It was so much more fun that way. Of course, I realize they can't do that every week. But I wish they could! Like you and me, I think most people watch for the characters, not the cases.

I really liked Callen's chemistry with Joelle, too! They were great together. I haven't heard a negative thing about them yet. (Of course, as soon as I say that, I'll hear something.) I loved Callen as a "domesticated boyfriend." He was a good multi-tasker as he also tried to divert her attention - an unusual trait for a guy. Just kidding, just kidding. ;) But Chris O'Donnell really was wonderful expressing Callen's hurt over Joelle's comments. He didn't even need any lines to show all his feelings. COD is great like that! And I was really glad Joelle showed up at the ice rink!

Barrett's comedic timing was right on target, as usual. He was so funny! I hope to see more of him in the 2nd half of the season. He and Nell do make a cute couple. Oh, and about the interrogation room - you're right, I neglected to mention how intimidating Sam was sitting on the other side of the guy. I love how he "squeezed himself and those big pythons of his" right next to the guy. (I love your phrasing!) And I love seeing the softer side of Sam. They really have been putting an emphasis on that lately, which is great.

Now to Densi. I agree with you that the main reason Densi wasn't going anywhere was likely because the powers that be couldn't decide which direction to take them. Of course, we don't know for sure. But that is my guess. And it created a lot of frustration. I like how you say the people in charge were also playing it safe with Densi. So true. But I'm glad they finally decided to also take a risk and be bold and daring! Bold and daring is GREAT! :) Thanks for the kudos on the Frozen Lake connection. I actually don't think I would have realized it myself if I hadn't run across something that said "Frozen Lake" as I was writing - and it made me think about it. So I was happy about that. :) As for the vacation invitation, I'll have to watch the scene again to catch Deeks' big smile after he says the hotel line. I thought he really meant it about Monty but Kensi took it about her, so it was just a comical mistake. Regardless it was amusing. But I also loved how ECO played the scene. The cough was funny and DR's nervous portrayal was great! It was perfect. I also thought their convo in the car was an important turning point. But I didn't see it as Deeks being upset with her practical take. I took him (& his raised eyebrow) as being confused on why Kensi was acting weird. But I love that people can see different things in these scenes!

As for the kiss - it was too Harrison Ford'ish for you? Hahaha. How funny. Well, Deeks did wait a long time. :) But yes, the kiss/scene was long awaited and very gratifying. And I also loved that smile in between. It was a perfect moment - like they almost wanted to check what the other was thinking - & found it was nothing but good things. :) But the best part is, like you say, there is no turning back from this now. Densi is out of the "boxes" they were in. (I loved that!!) And I don't think Densi will take over the show. I think the show is always best as an ensemble show where all the characters shine. So I personally don't see any dangers of that. And like you say, this episode is a perfect example of the show being able to shine a spotlight on all the members of the team. They did it so well here. I have faith that will continue!

Hello Louise! Thanks for your comments. I do think there have been many past Kensi and Deeks moments that were forced or happened at awkward times ("shoehorned in," like you so perfectly say) so I understand what you mean. I was happy this time it was all so natural! Yay! It was great how it mirrored Callen's situation. It just made it flow so perfectly. I'm glad you enjoyed the episode and all the things you mentioned. Funny that you knew as soon as you heard that a partner relationship was forbidden that it would happen. Good foresight! But like you say, I think they did it in a nice way in this episode.

BTW, I like your point about Deeks' questioning of Joelle being for curiosity's sake and not troublemaking. So true. He genuinely cared about his friend Callen and that came across.

When it comes to the small nuances you mention, you have great points - and great suggestions on what would have worked so well!! Thinking about it now, it was weird to have the gun blown out of Callen's hand with an automatic weapon and only graze his hand! You're so right - it would have been a perfect opportunity for a little hurt/comfort addition. And I absolutely love your idea of Callen having to use the flying back kick move he teased Sam about earlier to save his life. That would have been fantastic. Those little touches indeed do tighten up a script and make it more interesting. You needed to be in the writer's room on this one! Seriously - those were great ideas!

But like you say - this was still a fantastic episode with so much to be thankful for and happy about! It was great fun to watch.

Great insight into how the title could apply to all of the characters. Obviously they all have that side to them as they have to maintain their covers. But since we don't hear about it often, it is kind of weird to think about. (For example, how strange would that be to have your parents think you're a news editor when you actually work in operations for NCIS? I just can't imagine. What if they wanted to visit her news station ever? It's all weird!) You have great thoughts - on Eric posing as Nell's boyfriend and Deeks having a lot we don't know about him and wondering how much Callen will be able to tell Joelle going forward, and all the rest. Perhaps the title is supposed to mean more than the holiday reference, you never know. Thanks for all the interesting suggestions and insight. I enjoyed it.

Hello! Isn't it interesting how we've only seen Joelle once before and yet everyone really seemed to love her! I thought she was a great match for Callen. Being a teacher and having such a normal life could really give him some stability. Plus, they're so cute together! I also hope they give this relationship a chance & don't give him someone different later. Chris O'Donnell really shined in his scenes this week. I just think he is so wonderful at showing emotion without any words.

It did kind of hit me strangely, too, that the team has to be so guarded with their covers - because like you say, a lot of the time they really aren't. (I love you mentioning that Sam and Callen go around LA handing out their cards. Ha ha.) I don't fully understand why working for NCIS would have to be that secret - just don't tell all the details of what you do. But then again, I'm not an expert on this topic by any stretch.

I also would have thought that Michelle had called Joelle to come to the skating rink if Callen hadn't said something to her about her receiving his call. Yes, it was nice that he made an effort and wasn't willing to give up. I was very happy about that, too!

Interesting about the ice skating. I bet you're right and ECO skated in his past. (I didn't know he played hockey as a kid. Cool.) Interesting how it can come back to you so quickly. (What a fun pastime as teenagers!) But he really was quite good. You definitely have to have some experience to skate like that. Oh, you made me realize I misspelled salchow. I'm going to change it now. Thanks. :)

I understand where you're coming from with Nell, which could affect your opinion of Eric and Nell together. But they were cute in this episode! (Aside from the nagging, which I noticed and was only slightly bothered by since I could picture Eric really making them miss their flight. Ha ha.) But yes, nagging in general is not good.

Granger and Hetty do work well off each other, don't they? I like Granger much better, in fact, when he's with Hetty. Lol. ;)

I know what you mean about needing to be able to see Deeks and Kensi get together. I am the same way! Isn't it wonderful to finally see it with our own eyes?!! I am thankful it went down this way - better late than never. :)

I also agree with what you say (and think it's a really great point) about the producers not playing Deeks and Kensi like confused characters all along. If they had made it clear that the characters were confused about where they stood and what they wanted the whole time, all of this season & the end of last would have been easier to take - because it would have made more sense. But you're so right in pointing out it wasn't always played like this. And that just made it more confusing. So whether they claim the characters were confused later, it doesn't fully reflect how it came across on TV. (So I'll try to sue for copyright if they go with this excuse. Lol.) BTW, I didn't know Daniela had made a comment about thinking it was a good idea for the producers to confuse the fans. Yikes! I think confusing us on purpose - especially for so long - is a very, very bad idea - and dangerous, too, when it comes to keeping viewers. So I'm glad they're finally, finally off that train!

While I really enjoyed the Densi kiss, you are not the first person to complain about it feeling like they are related (especially since they are - the actors, that is). Well, at least like you say, the thing you really, really needed to see was given to you. So it's a time to celebrate! :)

Oh, one thing - I didn't understand your last part about the producer's twitter comments showing what "it" looked like (what's "it?") and the picture of them on the ice. What did the comments & picture show? A circle??

Thanks so much for your nice words and great comments!

  28. Actually, according to the press release, Cam is short for Camryn (possibly spelled with a K, I can't remember off the top of my head). Anyway, yeah, nice to finally have that little tidbit. :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hi Tonya, I also think Joelle's will keep Callen grounded. Callen doesn't know a whole lot about himself either. it can be an interesting way for both of them together to explore who he really is.

  30. Hi Tonya-Great review! Thank you. So much to comment on which I will do later when I have the time but just to answer your question to 'Anothernewname above in relation to the producer twitter I think she might be referring to a twitt of Andrew Bartels, one of the writers of this episode, which he twitted on December 10 saying: "#ncisla fans: what does an ice rink remind you of?" The it is probably the ice rink. Then there was another similar twitt with a picture which I cannot find now. At any rate they were dropping hints.

  31. we know Sam and Callen handed out cards but we dont' know whose names were on the cards. Callen has to be more guarded and careful with his identity than the others. while they all go under cover, it's Callen that goes deep in. like the Grey man, becoming anyone, anytime.

  32. Ice rink = frozen pond = Frozen Lake Tonya u were right about that metaphor!!! :)

  33. Much as I enjoyed this episode and your recap/review, I am very wary that the writers are going to pull the rug out from under us and return to the COTW being the sole focus and merely providing momentary glimpses of the character's personal lives. I fear that we'll go back to seeing Kensi & Deeks high-fiving because they don't want the rest of the gang to know they're in a relationship and then there will be no time for any intimacy (no, not sex, don't need to see it) because they have to keep the bad guy from blowing up the universe.

While I realize that this show isn't Bones or Castle, I like to know the people I invite into my home, I want to feel like they're my friends (or at least they could be if they weren't TV characters). I must say that this show is not a must-see for me primarily because I don't have a connection to the characters; I don't know them well enough to want to watch them live so I watch when I have the time from my DVR. I didn't even watch this episode live (even though my other Monday 9pm (CST) show was a rerun from last season), I watched it when I had a chance last night.

All in all, though, it was a good episode and I really hope I'm wrong; I'd really like to be.

  34. Thanks for the great write-up Tonya. I'm still feeling all warm and fuzzy from those wonderful Callen scenes. How great to see him happy in a relationship.

You're also spot on about Chris O'Donnell. He's an amazing actor. He does subtle so well. And he looked like his gorgeous heart would break when she called him a humbug and later, for a brief second, when she said she didn't want to meet his "family."

I love that you devoted some time to his story in this episode, and that of the others too. Reading some sites one would think that only Kensi and Deeks were in this episode.

I really like the character of Joelle. I think she'll be great for G. She balances his character perfectly. I'm glad that others here seem to like her too. On some sites she'd be vilified ( and the actress would undoubtedly be flooded with hate mail) for daring to take our G off the market.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Why do people make a deal about them being brother and sister inlaw? They were best friends before she met his brother . He made her life better by hooking her up with his brother and iam sure that family is better off for having her as part of it. They are actors and its only an on screen kiss. I saw an interview with D.R and she said she loved him as a friend and a family member and she would much rather kiss someone she likes than some other actor she doesn't like. The fact they are such great friends off screen is what makes them great on screen. They spend so much time together and are such good friends its likely best for all concerned that she is happily married to his brother. Disaster can happen in life that are not intended when people spend a lot of time together. They are one big happy family and I think that's great.

  36. One of the producers asked what the fans thought of the scene where Kensi and Deeks were standing on the ice and wanted to know what we the fans thought it represented and I guess the ice was supposed to represent the frozen lake metaphor.

Daniela didn't use the word screwing with the fans when she said she liked what the producers were doing going back and forth in the interview but I surely took that way.lol

And your very.welcome regarding my comments on your review! I was pleased to read that they made your night! :)

After reading your comments about the convo between Deeks & Kensi...and rewatching that scene a few dozen times.. ( .purely for research & scientific purposes mind you..cough cough!! ;) ) I agree with you..that Deeks just found Kensi was acting weird....and he perhaps ended up a little perplexed...but he wasn't upset with her.

As for the 1 st Densi kiss being " too Harrison Ford;ish" in nature for my tastes.....I give you exhibit A,,..and B...found on You Tube...for your perusal...showcasing Ford's smooth & debonair smoochin style with the ladies!! :)

  38. J.J....I was on twitter and saw a pinhead actually tweet & ask ECO & DR....how did it feel to kiss their in-law!?!

I thought to myself....what an uncouth idiot......he came across as a real jerk who must have grown up inside an outhouse!!

I gotta admit.. when I heard that DR was dating & then got married to ECO's brother... I was one of those who thought it might become odd to see them kiss...
But..over time... I realized it wasn't them that was doing anything odd...it was me.....I was the one...over thinking things & making that situation weird.

.As you mentioned....there just actors...and that remark from DR about how she would rather kiss somebody she likes ...than someone she doesn't ,,makes complete sense to me,

In our lives..we all know and work with people who perhaps we just tolerant or don't even really like..but... we play along.,.to get along!

So imagine being an actor on a hit show..and having to kiss & pretend your madly in love with someone on the cast...who in real life..you can't stand to be around...
    .
I've read that some people think we won;t see a "real" Densi kiss because there now brother & sister in law....

and......thats one way..to look at their unique circumstances....but if ECO & DR are A- ok with doing those kissing scenes...who are we to complain?

I just re watched Neighborhood Watch last night....and it was even more enjoyable now..knowing that Densi's" thing" that the writers worked on & built up for the past 6 seasons...finally came to fruition & became official on Monday night.

Exhibit A & B totally made me laugh. After seeing those (my, how Harrison Ford looks so young!), I was glad Deeks didn't go full-out Harrison Ford!! Thank God for that.

You (and others) helped change my opinion a couple weeks ago watching the breakfast-stealing scene in "Traitor" so now we've both helped change each others' minds.

Oh, and getting tired from typing and blowdrying your hairpiece and therefore not being able to come up with a witty comeback just cements my hypothesis that men are not good multi-taskers. Hehehe. J/K. ;)

I think that's a legitimate fear about the case of the week being the main focus. I'd like to see more of the character's personal lives on a regular basis. Yes, we get glimpses all along the way, but more of it gives us more of that connection to the characters. While I do actually feel connected to them, when the episodes emphasize the case of the week over the characters themselves, I lose some of that connection. So I totally understand what you're saying. And from past experience, I know all the things that made this episode so great won't happen every single week. But I think and hope the show is realizing that the characters are so much more important than the weekly race against time/the bad guys that we know will turn out fine. I hope you're wrong, too! Thanks for your comments. (And I hope you keep watching the show & feel you have good reasons to as we go forward!)

Hey bj. Thanks for the wonderful comments! Warm and fuzzy is a great way to describe the feeling after watching this episode. I'm also really happy about seeing Callen in a relationship. I love how you say COD "does subtle so well." That's the perfect way to put it. And that takes some great acting to be able to do that! I definitely had to devote time to him in this episode as he was a VERY important part of it! It's fun seeing how many people really liked Joelle! Since we hadn't seen much of her, I didn't know what to expect. Yes, some probably would not love her for taking our G off the market - but when it's so great for the character, we have to want the best for him, right? ;) I appreciate your thoughts. Thanks for weighing in!

  49. "But I think and hope the show is realizing that the characters are so much more important than the weekly race against time/the bad guys that we know will turn out fine"

lol Seems I'm not the only one who knows how to turn a phrase or two around here young lady..cuz I loved & laughed when you wrote.....".the weekly race against time/bad guys that we all know will turn out fine"

That weekly race against time biznizz..has always been a big pet peeve of mine about the show...as practically every single case the team gets....their told by Hetty that they have only a few hours..and sometimes...( cue the dramatic music here ) minutes ..nay...mere nano seconds..
....to race around LA...catch the baddies .... save the city...and get back in time to the office...before the end credits roll....so we can see them all...laughing & and enjoying each others company after another hard work days..and a job well done! :)

Were usually told in promos...if the team.doesn't stop the dastardly villains in the nick of time this week..why...all of LA is doomed I tell you..DOOMED...but what the breathless CBS announcer guy leaves out...thats pretty well...the exact same thing...he breathlessly said about the case....LAST week also!!! lol..

The funny part to me is..I've noticed that usually the villains on NCIS:LA.....prefer launching their killer drones and multiple nuclear tipped warheads at downtown LA....during the daytime!

.After much hemming and hawing and serious deliberation with my crack staff..consisting of me, myself. and I......we have come to the conclusion..that the bad guys like to attack LA ...usually between the hours of 8 AM to 5 PM PST......because they want to beat the rush hour traffic on the 405!!! :)

My best guess is...it's so they can race back home in time to catch the 6 PM newscasts...pop a frozen TV dinner into the microwave....and find out whether their evil early morning plans to destroy Southern California...worked out or not!! lol

Seriously..what gets me is..why do the writers..even bother to come up with these silly "race against time" plots in the first place...when as you say...we all know..the team will save LA...no matter how little time is left on the clock..and everything will work out just fine!!

I understand the writers do it..because they want to add dramatic tension to the episode......but..it rarely and pretty well...never achieves the effect their looking for..this being a major TV network .......
so..why not just drop that clock biznizz.. all together....and come up with fresh and new angles to add dramatic tension.....thats.far more interesting to watch and more realistic to buy into.

Thats why like yourself... I've always enjoyed the smaller type cases..and episodes that focus mainly on the characters.

I frankly find those those over the top cases.involving a ticking doomsday clock ......"Farfetched & Fictitious!" ....a phrase an ex gf of mine used to say to me all the time..whenever she came into a room and saw that I was watching some sci fi show she hated!!

( She also said that to me........whenever I told her over the phone.. that I just fed the dog ..burped the baby & mowed the lawn!" but...I digress!!! lol :)

    .

  50. lol OUCH....or...as our TV pal Deeks is fond of saying..."Touche!!!" :)

Im happy to read that you laughed at those crazy & comical Harrison Ford kissing scenes!

I don't know if Harrison ever paid an acting coach to teach that much younger version of himself ..how to kiss women onscreen....but if he did.... he should have definitely asked for his money back!!

And I really liked that phrase you came up with....when you said.that you were glad "Deeks didn't go full-out Harrison Ford!!!" lol

Id say on the Full Out Harrison Ford sliding kiss scale..( or... FOHF for short lol.)...Deeks 1 st kiss..would only merit...a 2... FOHF score!

    ( Course...what we never..ever want to see Deeks receive for a kiss with Kensi..is a 10 score..on the FOHF.....
...because a 10 score...looks something like ...what that creature from the Alien movies did..when it launched itself and got attached to some poor guys face!! lol )

    ReplyDelete
  53. How the hell did I miss this review?? Good grief. Well, I will assume everything has been rehashed here in the comments, but I wanted to weigh in before next week's new ep.*

Okay, first of all, I love Callen and Joelle. I hope they are kept a solid couple after weathering this storm and that they learn to trust each other. The actors have good chemistry (although not as 'caliente' as Densi), and I really enjoyed the glimpse of Callen's softer side. I did notice he had the key to her place, but I have very little desire to see them go beyond PG on camera. I'm happy to have that implied, but I think a sexy scene between them would be uncomfortable for everyone involved--especially me.

I LOVED seeing Sam's wife and hope to see more of her in the future. I just adore their dynamic, and Aunjanue Ellis' portrayal of Michelle is terrific. And Sam is just the best. I want him to be my BFF or my uncle or something.

The Hetty/Granger scene and the Eric/Nell scenes were nice, but since I am more interested in the other characters, I don't have much to expand on there.

So, now the important stuff: Kensi and Deeks. I can agree they weren't in a real relationship until the kiss, and I'm glad that's been clarified. That said, do you not think they had sex after the restaurant scene at the end of "Recovery?" Even though the love scene from that night was deleted, the restaurant scene and pretty much all of "Frozen Lake" tell the story, and that story involves naked people with great hair. If the writers wanted to go in a different direction, they waited a little too long to try and re-bag that cat.**

I'm also still not entirely clear on the bold vs. safe aspect of the Densi relationship. How could anything between them be deemed as safe? Seems to me it's been one thing after another with those two--and that's without considering the fact that they get their asses shot at on a fairly regular basis. The tension created by these two characters makes the idea that theirs is a safe partnership kind of hard to believe. Isn't all that tension and angsty interaction why we love them so much? Am I high?

It may seem overly-critical, but I think the writers struggled to speed things up after going at such a slow pace for so long. They clearly switched gears somewhere along the way, which created kind of a clunky few turns to get us to the scene at the end of "Humbug." The "will they or won't they" dynamic is popular, and personally, I enjoy the tension it creates (to a point). It's hard to gracefully switch gears, and I think it could have been done a little better leading up to this episode.

For me, the weirdness began after "Spoils of War" (which should have been the S5 finale), and then things really went off the rails somewhere around "Three Hearts." I suppose the sudden and somewhat awkward kiss at the skating rink was a reflection of the clusterfuck of bad timing and emotional carnival rides along the way.

I love episodes like this where everything is tied up with a bow, but I felt it was a tiny bit forced. I loved seeing Vulnerable Kensi, but I think the writers have tried to take her there too suddenly after such a long time writing scripts for Titanium Kensi. Even so, "Humbug" was freaking awesome, and I think I've watched that last scene about 87 times. ECO could probably do a little homework on how to believably kiss his sister-in-law, but other than that, the scene was pretty flawless. Their smiles at the end easily made up for any mild shortcomings this season.

*Tonight's NCISLA rerun on CBS is probably my all-time fave -- "Spoils of War"-- yay!

**"Recovery" and "The Frozen Lake" are on USA Channel late tonight. :)

  56. lol Agreed...seeing Deeks attain a rare 10 score from all 3 judges on the dreaded FOHF scale...would probably not only scar Densi fans for life ..but make us all fearful for Kensi;s ability....to move her lips for the next 6 months!! :)

( btw..believe it or not....I actually had to go check Wikipedia.....to re-learn what FOHF meant!! lol )

    Here's wishing you & every NCIS:LA & Densi lovin fan on here.. a very happy & healthy ...2015! :)

Late in responding, but all of this is funny and true, though I never noticed until you mention it that all the bad guys launch their deadly weapons or attack during daytime. Haha. That's hilarious. I agree that the dramatic tension would be better achieved with some fresh new angle instead of the clock "biznizz" we see as "farfetched and fictitious!" :)

  58. Hi Tonya. Thanks so much for your detailed response. I did not expect it due to my latedness (is this a word?) but you are a true journalist and professional. I know it was a different take and was unsure if I should post it at all. So thanks again. Glad you took some time off the internet, every one should do it. I hope you had a great time and have all your batteries freshly charged for the new year :)

You're very welcome! Thank YOU! (And time off the internet definitely helps refresh the batteries!) I hope you had a great New Year, too!

  60. I guess I am the Lone Wolf because nothing you described did I see in the Callen and Joelle scenes. We have seen Callen when someone he cares about reacts – immediate, sometimes irrational, consuming, heated and in action. He showed none of that towards Joelle. He only went to her when he found out The Flash drive was at her house. Everything he did was job related.

I saw two people who don't know each other: Callen's job and life lessons; Joelle for whatever reason lacking in this area(her own comments about being a girlfriend). She allowed Callen to string her along, not asking basic questions Like what is your First name? How many months do you go with someone and don't ask them this question yet you give them a key to your house!

I want Callen to be happy and off the market, I just want the woman to be someone who compliments him; knows herself, smart, strong, and earns his respect.

Also agree with COD's quiet moment and expressions. Which is what I saw lacking in his interactions with Joelle.

It's okay to disagree! Thanks for your perspective. I do understand where you're coming from with "two people who don't know each other." Since Callen wasn't presenting his true (or full) self, that makes sense. They didn't fully know each other. Great point about why she never asked about his first name. You WOULD think that would be a basic question! Thanks for commenting and letting us know how YOU took the scenes and what you'd like to see with a Callen love interest. :)
