MOVIES: Suicide Squad - Viola Davis Cast As Amanda Waller

17 Dec 2014

According to sources, the lovely Viola Davis (How To Get Away With Murder) has bagged the role of major DC Comics villain and Prison Warden Amanda Waller in David Ayer's upcoming Suicide Squad. In the comics, Amanda Waller is a former congressional aide and government agent often placed in charge of the Suicide Squad, a semi-secret government-run group of former supervillains working in return for amnesty.

Now, the key here is that the role is hers provided that the filmmakers can work out her TV schedule, which will be no small feat considering how big of a hit How To Get Away With Murder is. If it works out she will be joining Jared Leto as the Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Tom Hardy as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Boomerang (or Captain Boomerang), and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress.

Oprah Winfrey and Octavia Spencer were reported earlier as contenders for the role.

  1. Great news. Well deserved. Shooting thr first part won't be a problem as they have just 16 eps. But for later appearances there might be problems.

  8. Eh, she's a good actress, but I generally don't watch DC films since most of them turn out to be a hot mess.

I LOVE the casting, but I wonder if they're going to put her in a fat suit or not. Viola has Amanda's personality down pat, considering her other work. But part of what made Amanda Waller so unique was how different she looked.

She worked hard to get where she did and she didn't let anyone or anything (like her visual appearance) stop her from getting there. Instead it added into how fearsome she looked.

  13. Most DC shows are good, but their films are not.

    Indeed.
Although ever since Young Justice was canned their animated shows have gone downhill.

Arrow, Flash and the other live action shows are only good adaptions they have now.

  15. The Dark Knigth trilogy and Man of Steel are great. At least I prefer this movies to the cookie cutter Marvel comedies. But to each their own.

  18. Didn't watch Man of Steel, I intend to but didn't had chance. But I'll watch it around the holidays. Heard mixed reviews but I don't like the Marvel verse that much. Xmen and Spidy are good but C America Shield and co are so unappealing!

  19. I'd like to see Oprah playing Amanda, would be interesting, but I'm glad Viola got the role. I think I'm more excited for this movie than for Bat vs Super.

  23. I was hoping for Oprahy for the role, but Viola is going to bring it, she hasn't been confirmed for the role yet has she, it's contingent on her schedule right, so I'll hold my excitement for now!!!

  25. YAY! Go Viola!!!

Having said that... Any of the ladies who were being considered would have been amazing so my reaction would have had the same positive excitement regardless of which one actually won the role.
