The Walking Dead – Four Walls and a Roof – Review and Discussion

27 Oct 2014

This week we had confirmed what many had already suspected – Bob had been bitten by a walker when he was under water at the food pantry – which led to a tearful goodbye and a chance for Bob to pass on some final wisdom. This was an emotional episode. It was also one of closure for what feels like a three-episode mini-arc around secrets, sins, and forgiveness.

Lawrence Gilliard Jr., who plays Bob, was given the opportunity to deliver what I imagine will become an iconic line as he hysterically screams, “Tainted meat!” after informing Gareth and the other Termites who are slobbering down his leg meat, that he had been bitten by a walker. The character also had the opportunity to say goodbye to Sasha, Rick, and the others in more somber scenes, during which he tells Rick (another great line): “Nightmares end. They shouldn’t end who you are. And that is just this dead man’s opinion.”

This episode was heavily focused on the topic of forgiveness. Visually, the camera kept finding the image of The Last Supper on the church wall, which was above the couch where Bob died. This symbolism fits as the story of the crucifixion of Jesus is one of forgiveness - Jesus died so that the sins of mankind can be forgiven. In the Biblical tale, and in the artwork, Judas who betrayed Jesus, is present for the last supper. Who would Judas be in this scenario? Father Gabriel for betraying his friends by not granting them sanctuary? Gareth and his group who betrayed their own kind?

The episode had a nice contrast in the framing of scenes from the two groups. In the church, we see broad stained glass windows and alter in the background as Sasha and Rick move in to confront Father Gabriel on their missing friends. With the Terminus group, we also see windows, but behind these are ravenous walkers pushing to get – mirroring the group in their hunger in as Gareth and the others eat Bob’s leg.

A Secret Revealed

In a heavily emotional scene, we learned Father Gabriel’s secret this week. He painfully recounted how after the bombing of Altanta, people from his congregation had come to the church seeking refuge, but he had left the church doors locked. They begged for help – and he had a choice – but he left them outside to be killed by walkers. Was one of those parishioners the walker who bit Bob? Possibly, although we’ll likely never know for certain. Tyreese later talks about choice as he’s telling Sasha she should stay with Bob rather than join the hunt for Gareth.

Seth Gilliam, who plays Father Gabriel, did a great job in making the clergyman’s memories of hearing families being torn apart as they were begging for his help come alive. His recounting of those moments was haunting.

Reflections on the Episode

I thought this was a very strong episode that had its emotional hits. Saying goodbye to Bob was hard. His ending left us with an open question asked by Sasha – “So what is it? The good that comes out of this bad?” The way the question was left unanswered seems to point to it being an individual discovery that Sasha will need to make on her own. My one small criticism is that parts felt a little predictable (the group circling around back on the Termites for example), but other moments were unexpected. I certainly didn’t predict the group would be separated again so soon. While I’m sure Glenn and Maggie will be reunited with the group again in the future, Washington seems so far away right now.

Tyreese had some very nice scenes. He talked about wishing he had final moments with Karen, and warning his sister that she will regret it if she spends Bob’s final moments seeking revenge rather than being with him. It was good to see Tyreese’s emotional strength return. The man who had been reluctant to kill walkers a few episodes ago was now was able to take the knife away from his sister after Bob had passed so that Sasha wouldn’t have to deliver the blow.

When Tyreese was with Rick digging the grave, he says the experience of getting to Terminus had killed him. Rick responds that it didn’t. I believe Rick is correct here. If shutting off your humanity is the equivalent of emotionally dying in this world, Tyreese is among those in the group who are the most alive. This comment from Tyreese felt like a call back to Carol’s comment to Mary in No Sanctuary that neither of them are still there, as we’ve seen that Carol is in a different place emotionally.

In Gareth’s final moments, he tells Rick that he can tell that Rick has never been really hungry. I wonder if this will be an important thread in the next segment of their journey.

Other Thoughts:

- My favorite moment of this episode might just be when Rick shot Gareth – not just because Gareth had it coming and has been the most annoying villain we’ve had so far – but because he was about to do that last minute blackmail posturing that’s such a cliché on so many TV series, saying he was going to shoot through the door to where Carl and the group were hiding if Rick and his group didn’t lower their guns. But Rick just cut him off by shooting off his hand before he could barely finish his thought. This is why this show can get so lost in so much angst but still emerge as one of the best action series on the air. We love a hero who’s also apparently had enough of the villain’s monologuing and proactively takes care of it for us.

- I loved the staging when Rick’s group, in leaving the church, walked away in the dark and Gareth’s group approached. It felt like it was meant to mirror a play: one group exits into the shadows while the other group enters into the spotlight in almost complete silence as they avoid the previous group.

- There was a nice visual parallel drawn between the ravenous walkers at the window and the group of Termites messily eating Bob’s leg. Gareth’s comment to Bob: “I’m being a human being here” had more than a hint of irony.

- We haven’t heard much from Eugene lately, but in a subtle nod to his character, the camera shows a plaque behind him that reads: “Stupidity is also a gift of God but one mustn’t misuse it.”

- Bob’s comment about dreaming about Sasha, and how Sasha was laughing, reminded me of Tyreese telling Carol about the dreams he’d have of Karen, and how in those dreams, the world was like it was before. Tyreese made a comment at that time that the whole world was haunted by the dead. This episode had a slightly haunted feeling to it as the group prepared to say goodbye to one more of their own.

- Gareth draws an “A” on the church as they stalk their prey. So apparently “A” functioned as more than the name of the location of Rick's group at Terminus. It was their brand – as in cattle branding – to the Termites.

- I found the choice to have Maggie deliver the line, saying that the church is “just four walls and a roof” interesting, given that she’s Hershel’s daughter. We see Maggie fingering a Bible early in the episode, probably thinking of Hershel. Apparently Maggie’s becoming somewhat cynical too.

- While the Bob storyline was touching, the piece that stayed with me at the end was the look on Daryl’s face. Something had happened, but his face didn’t have the look of tragedy either. It made me pretty curious to see what happens next – and learn what’s coming out of the bushes.

- Regardless of what happens next week, I feel better now that Michonne has her sword back.

What did you think of the episode? Let me know in the comments.

  1. great review as always chris! It was so sad when they are all in the room saying their goodbye's to bob. He had grown on me as a character.

I did love Rick and gang going all postal on Gareth and his cannibals. That was satisfying.

btw: I love the new grid format of the homepage!

  2. Thanks! I thought it was a good solid episode. It probably won't rank in my favorites for the season just because they set such a high bar, and I'm not as attached to Bob as I am to some other characters, but it was still a good episode.

  3. Great review, Chris! Bob had grown into one of my favorite characters. At first he was portrayed as so shifty and suspicious at the prison -- but then we got his back story, and it was just heartbreaking to see how grateful he was to be taken in by a family he could call his own. He had become one of the most upbeat, encouraging members of the group, and it was so touching that he remained encouraging right up to his final breath. Also touching (I actually teared up) was Tyreese coming in to take the knife from Sasha. Here's the guy who abhors violence and killing, but he'll put down Bob in a heartbeat if it means sparing his sister. I like how that final question from Sasha was left hanging in the air -- and while I don't 100% agree that Tyreese's grueling trip to Terminus fully "killed" him either, I think it destroyed some hopeful, optimistic core inside him. That gives his sister's question some real validity.

I really liked the way they juxtaposed a lot of the "last supper" imagery here too, and I agree that religious cynicism was coming through loud and clear (even from battle-hardened Maggie). I also got a slightly more grisly read from it: the idea of "supper" and what you need to devour in this world to keep going. Your sanity? Your own soul? Other people? None of the answers are very forgiving or redeeming, which turned that image on its head for me.

Finally, I have to admit that the Abraham/Glenn thing was a pretty "WTF" moment for me. Abraham is a strong ally, but he's basing his entire mission on a guy who might be full of it. I've spent a lot of time wishing he would take down his spiel several hundred notches. So for Glenn to jump in, after what they've all gone through to reunite? It just didn't ring all that true for me. Although I can see where splitting up the group does seem to produce better story lines. It just seemed ... kinda soon, maybe?

All in all though, I love the way Gimple is starting to assign familiar comic stuff to different characters, while weaving in totally new story lines like the Beth arc. Makes it almost impossible to guess what's coming next!

  4. Thanks for the comments! Yeah, there's a whole second level to the last supper / "this bread is my body" symbolism with walkers and Termites that I've wanting to avoid. There are so many levels to this show. Love to hear other thoughts though, and your comments are always interesting.

On the Abraham part, that bothered me at first, but I'm starting to think of this gung-ho "having a mission" as being his coping mechanism. If he doesn't have the mission, then he needs to face reality. We haven't gotten very deep into the mind of Abraham yet, but I thought back to what Tara said to him initially when she was questioning his motivations and accusing him of lying about them.

I saw Glenn, not as wanting to leave, but as wanting to make sure this group made it through the night. They needed Abraham's help to survive Gareth, and this was a sacrifice to protect the group.

  5. Tara went with Abraham's group? I dind't notice her on the bus...

    ReplyDelete
  6. That's a good question. I thought that was what was agreed to in the deal, but I didn't play much attention to who was on the bus. I'd have to rewatch. Maybe someone else noticed where Tara was?

  7. That's a good point about Abraham -- it probably is a coping mechanism. In fact I think you've put your finger on what's been bugging me: Abraham (actually his whole trio) still seems kind of "comic book" to me, whereas most other characters have been fleshed out as real people. I remember how learning more about Michonne's back story really helped to humanize her (that, and softening the character over time). So maybe this road trip will be a chance to do that for Abraham. He's funny and driven and a great shooter, but so far I'm having trouble connecting with him. I think that's why it was so tough for me to buy Glenn's choice.

Ready to see what's up with Beth and how it plays into Daryl making it out and back in less than a day, and I don't think he had Carol or Beth with him.

    ReplyDelete
  9. That scene played out very mysteriously. Great cliffhanger built out of something that wasn't much more than an expression Daryl's face!

    ReplyDelete
  10. That's true -- and I guess remembering back to his first appearance, Tara even commented that he was smiling/laughing as he made each walker kill. Probably a whole psychological treasure trove there, just waiting for exploration. :)

  11. I thought they cleared up the markings on the trees when Gareth said they had blazed the trail back to Terminus. What I didn't understand was who's grave was Rick digging? Did they really go to the trouble to bury the Termites? I would have left them to rot.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Daryl's face looked like he has found Beth but has now to explain that Carol died before.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm laughing a little at your post because I was also wondering what was going on when Rick started digging several feet away from Tyreese. I'm certain he's not digging a grave for the Termites, so unless he's pulling a Jim, I'd say the intent was to connect the two holes (Tyreese has the head and Rick has the feet).

  14. haha. I like the way you phrased that.

  15. One episode better then the other in this season. Im so happy. Can't wait for the next episode.

  18. Usually all the clocks shown on the walking dead are set to the episode, i.e. 5:04 is season 5 episode 4. This recent episode had an alarm clock behind Sasha that was set to 8:39. I can't help but think that it has something to do with a bible verse. I am not at all knowledgeable about bible verses but maybe someone can shed some light on it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Am I the only one that thinks Morgan is the one behind the bushes w/ Daryl?

    ReplyDelete
  20. You have me Googling 8-39 now, lol. Nothing that fits very well yet, but I'll let you know if I find something ...

    ReplyDelete
  21. It would be cool if it was. I'm having trouble imagining him hiding in the bushes from Michonne though.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Remember how scared and crazy he was when Rick went back? He had all the boobie traps up and stuff written all over the walls... Maybe he was just being cautious before stepping out of the bush to a strong black woman w/ a sword? I can't wait for next Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Acts 8:39 possibly? And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord took Philip away; and the Ethiopian saw him no more, for he went on his way full of joy.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Not disagreeing, but I can't remember...who saw Morgan besides Rick in the last episode Morgan appeared in? Wasn't it just Rick, Michone and Carl? How would Daryl know who Morgan is?

    ReplyDelete
  25. I saw that water one when I googled it but wasn't sure if it was a good fit. There is something behind the time on that clock, Gimple always has a method.

    ReplyDelete
  26. LOL, that's funny. You now have a mission.

  27. I read somewhere that carol dies this season!!! now I think I will wink in every comment like I have turrets syndrome!! TSDF nuts taught me this....how does it feel bitches to not be able to block me???? CAROL IS A FUCKING BABY KILLING BITCH THAT MUST DIE!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. it seems that u dont read the comics Chris, judging the way u write ur reviews...for me, this epi was almost word for word and scene for scene just like the comics...the only main difference was that the Slaughter happened in the Church instead of their camp....

dont get too excited on who's behind Daryl cause it's nobody the anyone knows yet...he is "Noah", the one that tried to help Beth escape the Hospital but failed....he came back with Daryl to get Rick's group to go help Beth & Carol from the Evil Hospital...yes, they caputured Carol also....

we will see in Flashbacks on what happened to Daryl & Carol when they followed the car with the cross in epi 505...this Beth storyline will be a Long one lasting till the mid-season finale....

they needed to seperate the group cause they were too big and AMC needed more storylines in between them...we will see Abe's group in the next couple of epi's until they rejoin Rick....and YES, Tara is with Glenn&Maggie, the show showed a shot of all 3 of them in the Bus....

Thank You Chris for ur review, great like always...☺...

  29. How about Romans? I saw someone have that as a theory on...er, somewhere. Tumblr? Probably Tumblr.

  30. That was my assumption, too.

  31. im sorry Bruzilla...but BOB was the former Doctor in Woodbury that became the town Drunk and wasnt working any longer...after the Big escape by Rick from Woodbury, he took the town doctor and nurse and after Michonne did a number on the Gov, the only left to cure the Gov was Bob, who fixed him up...but that was the only time we saw him or heard from him in the comics...he was never to be seen again, lol...☺...

  33. @Lostie, I'm with you and I love spoilers, but not everyone does...but if they read your comment, they're gonna be spoiled whether they like it or not! :/ Maybe a spoiler warning next time? Just a suggestion.

  34. Thanks Chris - as always a great review !

I agree w your imagery of the last supper, but also 'saw' it as

Bob WAS the Termites Last Supper.... Ohhhh the irony. I was very happy that Bob didn't get the chance to turn, he died a peaceful death, much like his side of his and Sasha's game.

    * What's Abraham's deal? I believe even his compadres (Eugene & Rosita) are feeling a little pushed in Only The Mission. Leaving was not a priority to them - especially Eugene. I think Abe needs a little distraction !
    * I am NOT happy with the splitting up - we just FOUND each other !! This is not good.
*The smirk on Rick's face when he read the note on Abe's map
    *Michonne is once again a Bada$$ Samurai ! !
*Tyresse and Sasha's conversations, and him taking the knife (and burden) from her.
*Carl and comp ready and waitng !
    *Rick's 'talk' w Gareth ! ...... I'd say that's Just Desserts !
**What AND Who is w Daryl in the woods ..... The look and his actions ...... This is not going to be good !!!

Ummmm - is it Sunday Yet ?!?!

***** Possible Spoiler Alert..... yes apparently... I think and its only my opinion, that it is Beth. I think the shots of her in a hospital are images it is showing us as she tells the others what happened to her after she was "taken" from Daryl. I also think that Carol is with Beth in the trees so she wont have to be alone and scared by herself while Daryl checks to see if it is safe out of the protection of the trees. Like I said that is just my opinion. Chris684???

  39. No spoilers here , just speculation ;-)

I think Lostie is on the right track. While it makes sense to hide Beth from us, to make us wonder, I think if it was either Beth or Carol with Daryl, they would have been by his side when Michonne approached - thinking about what makes sense for the characters. I think it's someone new with an interesting story.

  40. "Bob WAS the Termites Last Supper.... "

NICE!!! But pretty gruesome too. There are too many levels to this eating of flesh!

YES to everything else you said. Except to it being Sunday yet. ;-)

  41. Possibly we're nit-picking here, but I agree these are some pretty crafty writers. :)
Romans 8:39 says: "Neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God." Maybe a shout-out to Hershel and Bob's hopefulness, or a silent answer to Sasha's question?

Then again, there's a more controversial angle which I'm doubting the writers would be calling out (??) -- but I'd taken a world religions class a couple years ago and looked back at some
test notes just for yuks. Chapter 8 of the Quran is on "The Spoils
of War." If you Google Verse 8:39, the wording is kind of a creepy coincidence.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Kathy and Linnea, see my reply to Chris above -- what are your thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hi Mary. I would lean on the side of Romans 8:39. I tend to doubt, as you do, that the writers would reference the Quran. I do believe there is some easter egg that goes with the time on the clock. Maybe a question for Hardwick on Talking Dead...just for shets and giggles.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Totally agreed Kathy. Plus a verse like Romans would be much more consistent with all the religious imagery shown in this episode. I think TD included this as a poll question, so maybe there really is some key significance.I like your idea about throwing it over to Hardwick! :)
