The Vampire Diaries: Season 6 & The Originals: Season 2 - Crossover Episode - Michael Narducci Interview

New details for The Originals' Vampire Diaries crossover have surfaced.

Nina Dobrev heads to The Originals in the Nov. 5 episode as original doppelganger, Tatia, who will be seen in Vikings-era flashbacks. A character previously mentioned during the 13th episode of The Vampire Diaries season three, "Bringing Out the Dead," she will be interacting with Joseph Morgan's Klaus and Daniel Gillies' Elijah. How did the opportunity to have her on The Originals present itself? As the season was being realized, The Originals writers came up with an arc that almost required Dobrev's presence — and it would have likely been scrapped had the Vampire Diaries star not been able to do it.

"We want to have these crossovers take place from a point of story. What makes the most sense for our story? "There's no possible way to tell the story if we didn't get Nina Dobrev," co-executive producer Michael Narducci told a handful of reporters at a recent screening. "We basically got on our knees and begged her."

"She was, to her credit, wonderful," added Narducci. "We tell a story that will make you understand [Tatia's] fate, what happened to her, her relationship with both brothers, and why what happened between her and the two brothers is so beautiful and also tragic."

The writers spent significant time making sure Elijah's dinner scene in Vampire Diaries, when Tatia is first referenced (Elijah called her "an exquisite beauty"), remained intact. (Watch that scene above.) "We studied every word of that to make sure we were honoring that and I think we do," Narducci assured.

In fielding obligatory questions about future Originals-Vampire Diaries crossovers, Narducci admitted, "That's a little bit above my pay grade." The likelihood of stories in Mystic Falls and New Orleans converging, specifically in reference to Klaus and Caroline's courtship, seemed slim. "It doesn't feel like there's an easy way to make people drop what they're doing in Mystic Falls and come to New Orleans, and certainly once our story lines get rolling, it's going to be very obvious that it'll be very impossible for our characters to take a vacation and go to Mystic Falls," he explained. "If anything, the last thing [Klaus] would want is to involve someone else in that. There's a lot of dirty family business to deal with first."

  1. sigh...
that image, while there were so many others...

this crossover will be a Klaus-pitty fest, right?
"Feel bad for Klaus and forgive him all his deeds, all is Elijahs fault for doing smth 2000 years ago"

  2. So know actual vampire diaries characters actually appear then? So not really a crossover?

  4. Well imo this "crossover" was a disappointment one they pretty much said it wasn't really a crossover, just a flashback. Soooo yeah. Anyways, the only thing i hope for is that Nina can make Tatia a complete different character then her 6 other versions. (elena human, Katerina, katherine, Elena as vampire, Amora, No humanity Elena).

  7. I already want to watch the crossover. When the Mikaelson told the story for first time I wanted to know more about it. It's a very interesting storyline and I'm sure Nina will make a great work.

  8. Love how now its a shared universe when last year they were so busy distancing them from tvd by calling it childish and whatnot... and its not a crossover when tatia never appeared on tvd its a flashback. oh and MN that Tyler crossover was horrible.

  9. Ok first off nothing that Julie Plec creates has been known to be organic. As the writers it is their sole job to make the story this isn’t real life if Julie and co wanted Caroline on The Originals she would be there. If you can create an entire show based on the premise of a 1000 year hybrid knocking up a 19 year old werewolf and a magical miracle baby that is part witch, part vampire, and part wolf all at the same time, and then turn the child’s mother into a hybrid while conveniently ignoring your own mythology to do it then I’m sure you could create a reason for Caroline to wander down to NOLA. Now moving on I have no problem with Tatia making an appearance on the show, I’ve always been curious about their story and bonus Nina Dobrev has wonderful chemistry with both Joseph Morgan and Daniel Gillies. My issue with this whole idea is that #1 this is not a crossover this is a flashback. A crossover is used to bring these two shows together via the same storyline. The point of a crossover is that the characters that we love from the mother show intermingle with some old and new faces on the new show. That’s not what is happening here at all. No characters from TVD will have been impacted by this episode at all we wont get to see any fallout from this crossover from either show so it’s like what exactly is the point? This was a cheap way of Julie shutting up the fans that have been pandering for a crossover. Caroline didn’t have to be the character that was crossing over, in fact I assumed she wouldn’t be. Would I have liked for Caroline to crossover? Hell yeah but I prepared myself for her not to. This crossover could’ve been anyone Elena, Katherine, Bonnie, Stefan, Damon, shit it could’ve been little Gilbert for all I cared. The fans who have been asking for a crossover were not asking for a character that we weren’t even introduced to on TVD to go to TO because what’s the point? None of the characters are going to benefit from this crossover it has legit no impact on the plot so why? Not to mention that this could be another fuck you to the Klaroline fandom by trying to shoehorn a much awaited Caroline mention into the same episode and making it a vague throwaway that leads to absolutely no reaction from Klaus. The problem isn’t that Tatia is crossing over it’s that Julie is using this crossover in the most idiotic way when she knows this is not what the fans are asking for. Not to mention an even greater fuck you to the KC fandom which is that Julie yelled all last season about how hard crossovers were to do and how it was so strenuous on the actors and what not (even though they’re half an hour away and could probably get their shooting done within a day or two) and how Caroline is such an important character and has so much to do on TVD and yet you could figure out a way to get the lead of your show to crossover when she is contractually obligated to be in every episode of the mother show and we haven’t seen Caroline do anything but make moony eyes at Stefan. Lol if this message was in regards to me poking fun about Julie’s organic crossovers then in all honesty I was joking I’m not angry, I cant be I adopted a “Cocaine is a hell of a drug” stance when it comes to Julie and her writing or logic a long time ago.

  10. I’m so sick of reading that Caroline has no business going to NOLA. Caroline has been focusing on reversing the Travelers spell and bringing Bonnie and Damon back from the dead. You know what she would need for that? Witches. Who does Caroline know who always has powerful witches under is thumb? Klaus. You know who has proven over and over that he would drop everything to help Caroline? Klaus.

It’s actually incredibly OOC for Caroline to NOT go to Klaus for help. She’d go to him for a dress and to cure Damon but not to help her regain her home or bring back her best friend? Yeah, no.

Stans are just trying to oversimplify everything (“but she has no purpose”, “but it’s so harrrrrd” “but she hates Klausssss”) so that they can fuel the excuses of the writers while keeping Caroline away from their faves. It’s a mutually beneficial thing for both sides. The stans (most of the ones I’ve encountered, anyways) are sycophants. It’s part of the reason that that TO fandom is repulsive. The KCers aren’t perfect and I disagree with a huge percent of the most common narratives that come out of the KC fandom, but I legitimately cannot stand it when ass-kissing takes precedence over critical engagement.

  11. I'm happy about flashback and more than happy about slim/no possibility of another crossover.

  12. Sth tells me Tatia commited suicide.Haven't we had enough of this??Funny how even Dobrev can't remember that Amara was the 1st Elena-looking person on th show!
    P.S. I love Narducci!He should do more interviews! :)

  13. Sick of people calling it a crossover cuz it isn't.

  14. Doesn't everybody in the vampire diaries have a purpose to go to new orleans? I mean Mikael is alive and has the wos. Esther is alive and always finds way to hurt klaus. But more importantly. Mikael has the wos. Which means everybody in mystic falls is in serious trouble and they should consider drop college and whatever they doing and help klaus kill mikael and esther in new orleans.

At least send Ric and Caroline there. Ric bcs alaric vs mikael vs esther would be awesome. I could totally see Ric kicking the living shit out of mikael and weaken him so much that klaus just has to deliver the sentence. Or esther pulling a magic trick to awaken Ric's psycho vampire hating self.

caroline should come also because she is the one in mystic falls that klaus is on goods terms with and would consider helping Caroline.
