Still curious why they decided to jettison Lucy Griffiths after building up a big back story for her. That must be her replacement character in the previews.
It was ok. I was entertained in the beginning, got a little bored in the middle, and interested again at the end. I think the cliffhanger pushed my interest back up. But nonetheless, i'm not ready to give up on this yet, i'll give it my trial run, but the promo for what's to come this season, really made me curious.
The pilot started off slow and picked up about fifteen minutes in but I still don't like it very much. Am definitely going to give the show a few more chances, though but it'd be better suited for cable not NBC.
There were a few genuinely terrifying moments and I can see why the girl didn't click with audiences when the pilot leaked.
The mention of scrying gave me Charmed flashbacks and Enochian just reminded me of SPN. I know this came first (before either of them) with the comics but both shows have done it better.
I liked it, good pairing with Grimm. Wasn't too fond of Liv but it looks like she isn't going to be around. I hope the crazy Professor guy is going to be around during the season, I liked him.
I'm also curious about the angel, he's interesting but his interaction with Constantine wasn't as I expected based on the movie and the WBSDCC panel. However, this is just the pilot so there's plenty of time to develop the relationship.
Was there much changed from the leaked pilot? I was pretty disappointed with it but it had potential. I heard they were gonna change the ending of the episode a bit. That female lead is so terrible though.
I think everything up to the last scene was the exact same.
The changes started after Liz saw the dead boy.. In the original she went to the bar to find Constantine and wanted to work with him. Then the episode ended with John lighting his hands on fire in the alley without the preview or the woman sketching pictures oh Constantine.
I'm a big fan of Hellblazer and absolutely loved the pilot. It's staying pretty loyal to the comics which is nice. Those who haven't read them though are in for one messed-up ride. Hellblazer is dark.... like super dark. This show has the potential to be as dark as Hannibal if they follow the comics, if not darker. And I absolutely look forward to it.
Much better than Grimm. I just hope they resolve the pacing issues... this easily could have been a 90 minute movie, and not added a single thing, just made the scenes the appropriate length. For instance, when Liv is attacked in the parking lot, that scene could have been horror (or at least slightly creepy) if it didn't all go down in less than 70 seconds! One scene to another entirely too fast, like the show itself was on Adderall.
Other than that, all the makings of my new favorite show. Nice bookend to the week, demons on Fridays and demons on Mondays (with Sleepy Hollow).
The pilot was a little bizarre considering that they gave tons of backstory on Liv and then decided to dump her in the end. They should have just re shot the pilot and introduced Zed there, in my opinion. But it was still really enjoyable from beginning to end.
Matt Ryan's Constantine was really awesome and my favorite portrayal of Constantine, hands down. He had that smug look and cynical personality down perfectly.
The makeup and special effects were REALLY great. They were really well done and probably my favorite part of the pilot. The scene with John and Liv and looking at the trapped souls and then the ghost train racing by and with Constantine's doppelganger on the rooftop was really badass.
I'm already loving Chas and hopefully he'll have more scenes in future episodes. I like that he is John's longtime friend and I'm looking forward to learning more about him. Also, does he have supernatural abilities or is immortal?
And I liked the little easter egg when Liv picked up Doctor Fate's helmet in her father's house. Will we be seeing him on the show? :D
It was nice that Liv left John the bloodstained map of the US. So excited for the demon hunting to begin and the introduction of Zed next week!
I watched this when it leaked and liked, but after they dropped Lucy I decided to not watch. Such a waste of time introducing a carácter only to get rid of her after the pilot, they should've just reshoot .
Yeah it makes no sense. Apparently they wanted to go in a different direction with a different character which is why they got rid of her but I don't know why they couldn't have re-shot the pilot with that character.
Hollywood Reporter (I think it was them?) mentioned it was considered but the pilot was far too expensive so reshoot the whole thing (and Liv was in quite a LOT of it).
Because it would have been 1-2 million dollars at least to reshoot it. Without Liv they'd have to have basically rewritten the entire thing, there's only a few scenes that aren't related to her in some way or the story told in the original pilot. Plus it sets up what kind of person John is, and the producers are totally right: he's way too much of a dick to humor some overly serious, super naive girl and become a teacher/father figure...
At least she could come back at some point, maybe after having her own adventures and growing up a little.
I thought it would be a bit odd too, but after watching it I really liked what they did.
They basically turned the entire pilot episode into an introduction to Constantine and his world. In that world some people will not want to be helped and some people will want to run as far away from Constantine as possible. Liz deciding to run to California did not seem very out of place to me.
In fact the managed to use the same closing narration "... I walk my path alone, because let's be honest... Who would be crazy enough to walk it with me?"
That line worked as a perfect explanation for Liz leaning town as well as setting up the new character who as it happens is crazy enough to walk with Constantine! XD
Plus, from what I understand the new costar they showed sketching at the end is an existing character from the comics. Her back story would not have fit in a one-for-one re-shoot of the pilot. They would have needed to write a brand new script and plot out new action, pay for new VFX work etc...
It may work, but I'll skip it anyway. Once it's over I'll download and watch it as a marathon on a lazy weekend. From what I saw on the leaked pilot I'll be surprised if this is renewed, so that way I'll save myself the pain if it turns out I actually like the changes.
Yeah, I read that they wanted to go on different direction, but still, I find it odd. If they had just erased her from the pilot, I'd probably give it chance now, but not like this. Still, I already watch too many shows, so it's a blessing in disguise, the day doesn't have as many hours as it is.
If they want to make it realistic (yeah, yeah, I know realism in a fantasy show) he'd either have to be inhuman or it was a spell or illusion or something. No normal human gets to walk away from a pole in the chest - not without going to the hospital first!
So the show really needs to explain that more instead of just saying "oh he's great at getting out of tough situation
Before the Winchester Brothers there was the HellBlazer..................John Constantine! Excellent start to this new series. 4 A HELLBLAZER NEAR YOU, I am Nobody!!!
did a quick rewatch as I saw the early version a few months ago and wanted to see what changes they would make in order to write out the Liv character.... and thought that the new set up was plenty interesting and liked that they didn't kill the Liv character off just in case they might want to fold her back in later, but I'm curious where they will go from here.... a good pair up with Grimm for Friday nights, just need some tweaking in the pacing a bit but like the characters well enough...
The pilot is one big disappointment to me. I wanted to like it, but I guess I'll save it for later depending on fan reaction. There were loads of information thrown at us in a not so cohesive and interesting way then tptb dropped Liv at the end making most of the backstory irrelevant. Then they present a map to show the episodic structure of "find a demon and kill". I consider that lazy writing.
Great pilot, will miss Liv. But John Constantine was awesome, and I like his lone wolf style. I loved that Helmet of Fate scene. Stuff like that makes a fan happy. I also like the old Taxi and quite pal Chas Chandler. This should be a fun series.
Thing is mythology of the show seems vast and they have to find a balancing act between too little and too much reveal and if they find it it might be a good show because Matt Ryan seems like he can carry it.
Agree, When they "fired" the actress as Liv, so soon after the screeners were sent out, a few critics wondered if they would re-film it. I guess that was too much money so they went with a chopped story instead. There is hope that it will get better so I'm going to give it at least 4 episodes max. Matt Ryan is fun to watch.
Everyone is afraid of something and mine is cockroaches, so they had me right at the start. ;) I loved it and thought the back story was well done. I really liked Liv so sorry to find out she is gone. This is going to be fun.
Yep, the bar scene changed. Liv was at the bar and showed him the map in the pilot. New epi Jazz is the one that shows the map and delivers the news that Liv is not coming back.
Totally agreed, that Liv would not work in the show as a foil to John...as the way they wrote her, made her more powerful and made Constantine a minor character rather then the lead.
True. I think they wrote Liv into the series as as a tool for exposition honestly. So many series start with some newbie being exposed to the new supernatural world and the viewer gets to learn through their eyes.
I think they attempted to do that, but realized it did not work very well and that fans may not like a character who is not canon being a lead on the series.
It was one of the worst pilots of the season for me, disjointed and scenes rushed followed by far too much exposition. The pacing was off, making it either go so fast as to not make much sense or drag on so that I wanted to play Free Cell. I give up on Grimm ever being followed by a show I'd actually like to watch.
It's just that nowadays so many series get cancelled and one that has problems even before it airs ... lets just say it's not a good omen. I hope I'm wrong for all the people that liked it though.
The premiere of Constantine was alright. It wasn't great but it has potential. Here's the thing though, what I think of the pilot doesn't matter a whole lot as long as it was enough to keep me watching for a few more episodes.
Yanking the female lead and replacing her after the pilot basically turns the premiere episode into a prequel. I'm going to have to treat episode 2 as a second pilot in order to gauge the pace and rhythm between the two leads, which I couldn't do in the premiere knowing that Lucy Griffiths would be gone by the end of the hour. So, in a nutshell, I'm withholding judgment on this show until after the next episode.
Yep. Maybe I did not express it well..... I meant in the original it ended directly after he lit his hands on fire and in the aired pilot they added a new scene when they cut to the mystery woman sketching pictures of Constantine.
no worries! I may have read the initial comment wrong. I am horrible when commenting as I have like fifty windows open....so I sometimes read something then forget. All that to say, I am sure it was me and not you!
I totally forgot about the sketching scene. That was interesting. I feel like I saw a promo about it, where he pokes the eyes out and then holds the sketch to the sun......
I hear what you are saying, and you are totally entitled to your POV....but I don't think that the pilot should be seen as a prequel. All pilots are dodgy to be frank, they are there to really just introduce the characters and the concept of the show....like calling cards....if you like it, come back for more. This pilot was actually pretty top notch in my books. They had to get rid of the made up character as the character took too much focus away from Constantine and made him into a minor character....given that she had powers and could pinpoint and see the dead....the new character actually made no sense....given that the show is named for and is about Constantine....it would have been the Liv show. IMO.
The pilot was actually filmed like a movie....which meant they spent a lot of cash on it....I have seen wayyyyyyyyyyy worse pilots which don't do nearly as much.
I thought it was a great idea to open the pilot in a mental hospital. If you didn't have a preconceived notion of the show it was a pretty interesting turn into...no this guy is actually NOT crazy.
I cannot begin to imagine what kinds of things the ME/Coroner runs into in Atlanta to make that kind of ruckus coming from the back of a van you know ONLY holds a body in a bag on a stretcher...a mild curiosity rather than something to be nervous about. :-)
The demon Constantine was fabulous. Overall the episode was a bit different from my expectations (don't think I've read more than one of the Constantine books and that was so long ago that I'm sure that's what I read) but I really enjoyed it.
I kinda liked Liz to be honest, but I can imagine reasons for writing her out; her character would have been the exposition dump pretty much every week, and the show would have to build her and Constantine at the same time, with the constant that he has to "show her the ropes" as an audience surrogate/pretty powerful individual.
I'm not saying It couldn't have worked, but It would have been harder, and kinda lame to use another character to connect the audience to the world instead of the titular one.
The new ending was pretty awesome, with Zed drawing all ominously, and the thematic difference of Liv and Zed pointed by John's narration fitted actually very well, and you wouldn't know that Liv's departure was a reshoot.
I had to check up the original pilot again, but there was definitely another scene that didn't feel the same! On the rooftop, the demon didn't transform himself to John's visage, and was for the whole scene the security guard.
I liked that change a lot thinking about it, it brings the focus back to Constantine, which is needed more now that Liv is out of the picture.
I did think demon/John looked somehow "different" to me, but I thought the dialog and actions were about the same as I remembered so I didn't bother to compare to the original pilot.
Knowing that I like the aired pilot even more! XD I thought Constantine looking at "himself" was great! It was like an internal struggle, seeing his future damned soul ad a demon trying to mock him all wrapped up in one!
I actually wouldn't recommend you do that seeing as it's 300 issues (and that's not counting the reboot) and you might spoil yourself for the show depending on how faithful they are.
In the scene on the roof jn the new pilot the demon transforms into John whereas in the original it stayed as the security guard through the whole scene, and in the final scene in the new pilot Liv leaves the show instead of staying.
So sick of people watching SciFi and looking for realism... So sick for people looking for realism in shows. If you want realism, go outside live the real life. I want to enjoy SciFi for being SciFi, I don't want to have another peek of reality when I'm away watching a TV show to escape reality for a few hours.
Agree to disagree. I didn't see Constantine as anything close to a minor character. Not only that, but Liv's replacement will have just as big a role on the show as she did so switching characters won't be changing the allocation of screen time. Just as Liv was envisioned to be, Zed will be a co-lead and the fact that her name isn't in the title makes little difference, just as on Castle, Beckett is a co-lead even though it's Rick's name in the title.
Back to my original point, As with shows like Castle, Elementary, Supernatural, etc., Constantine's structure hinges on the dynamic between the two lead characters and since the original lead has been replaced and is debuting in week 2, the premiere takes on the role of prequel rather than pilot because it wasn't the final, fully-realized version of the show.
Realism (or lack there of) can certainly make or break a series for me!
Any series that has a alternative reality like Sci-Fi or Horror or Fantasy Adventure needs to establish its own reality and adhere to it. If it does not explain aspects that are not possible in our real world, it loses credibility to me.
Usually a lack of realism alone is not enough to make me quit watching if there are other positive aspects such as good writing, fun characters, great acting, or pure entertainment value.
After a while though if my suspension of disbelief is broken too often I will lose interest in a show no matter how much I like the acting, characters, or writing.
I totally feel you about the name of the show and title character. Again, I was hypothesizing as to the rationale behind not using the character. It could simply be that the creators of the show (one of which is the author of the comics) just did not like the direction that the newly devised character was taking them.
I agree we will have to agree to disagree on the main purpose of a pilot. No I don't see this one as a prequel....as we were introduced to the main characters (minus Zed), and I feel like I personally got a sense as to what the point of the show was all about.
Reading your points, does not necessarily negate or refute any of the points I have made. It is all good fodder for the grist mill, so to speak. I am sure it will all become evident in episodes to come, the whys of the decisions made. Perhaps, we will see Liv again. :) (I am sad that the actress playing Liv on the show will not be on week to week, she is pretty amazing! Adored her in Robin Hood and True Blood.)
I will be pissed if Doctor Fate doesn't make at least one appearance lol The moment she picked up the helmet i screamed Smallville in my head and then said quick call Chloe Sullivan and ask her if the helmet is still in her possession lol
Don't suppose CW would try their hand with Doctor Fate or do they prefer a Hero show with a large fan base like Green Arrow and The Flash.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Matt Ryan blew me away.Fantastic Actor!
ReplyDeleteStill curious why they decided to jettison Lucy Griffiths after building up a big back story for her. That must be her replacement character in the previews.

ReplyDeleteThere were a few genuinely terrifying moments and I can see why the girl didn't click with audiences when the pilot leaked.

I watched the pilot months ago and enjoyed it, but I have to say I liked it even more upon second viewing!
ReplyDeleteI think the changes made to the last scene added something.
Was there much changed from the leaked pilot? I was pretty disappointed with it but it had potential. I heard they were gonna change the ending of the episode a bit. That female lead is so terrible though.
ReplyDeletedid they kill her off
ReplyDeleteI believe they got rid of her, I heard that they didn't recast the role they created a new female character.
ReplyDeleteNope, she moved to California.

No she left thr city
ReplyDeleteYh I know thank god :P I hope she's a lot better, im gonna give it a chance since they changed stuff later on.
ReplyDeleteI loved the episode! No complaints. I never read the comics (not a comic person) but I really like the lore and characters.
ReplyDeleteIt was good a bit slow but it pick up a great pair for Grimm I'll continue to watch
ReplyDeleteIf they follow the comics, then he's just a human being. Chaz has a way of getting out of deadly situations relatively unscathed.
ReplyDeleteGood pairing with Grimm.

I had to check up the original pilot again, but there was definitely another scene that didn't feel the same! On the rooftop, the demon didn't transform himself to John's visage, and was for the whole scene the security guard.
ReplyDeleteI liked that change a lot thinking about it, it brings the focus back to Constantine, which is needed more now that Liv is out of the picture.
I am with you. Totally, I did look at that. Mind you .... it did make the pilot scarier, because of that affectation of the Demon.
ReplyDeleteI missed that!
ReplyDeleteThanks.
I did think demon/John looked somehow "different" to me, but I thought the dialog and actions were about the same as I remembered so I didn't bother to compare to the original pilot.
Knowing that I like the aired pilot even more! XD
I thought Constantine looking at "himself" was great! It was like an internal struggle, seeing his future damned soul ad a demon trying to mock him all wrapped up in one!
What was different about them?
ReplyDeleteI actually wouldn't recommend you do that seeing as it's 300 issues (and that's not counting the reboot) and you might spoil yourself for the show depending on how faithful they are.
ReplyDeleteWe shall see....I got through Outlander....lol
ReplyDeleteIn the scene on the roof jn the new pilot the demon transforms into John whereas in the original it stayed as the security guard through the whole scene, and in the final scene in the new pilot Liv leaves the show instead of staying.
ReplyDeleteSo sick of people watching SciFi and looking for realism... So sick for people looking for realism in shows. If you want realism, go outside live the real life. I want to enjoy SciFi for being SciFi, I don't want to have another peek of reality when I'm away watching a TV show to escape reality for a few hours.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely!
ReplyDeleteRealism is what separates a poor or mediocre TV series from a great TV series... Especially in the Sci-Fi genre!
Realism is great when done and used correctly but it doesn't make or brake a show.
ReplyDeleteAgree to disagree.
ReplyDeleteBack to my original point, As with shows like Castle, Elementary, Supernatural, etc., Constantine's structure hinges on the dynamic between the two lead characters and since the original lead has been replaced and is debuting in week 2, the premiere takes on the role of prequel rather than pilot because it wasn't the final, fully-realized version of the show.
Realism (or lack there of) can certainly make or break a series for me!
ReplyDeleteAny series that has a alternative reality like Sci-Fi or Horror or Fantasy Adventure needs to establish its own reality and adhere to it.
ReplyDeleteI agree we will have to agree to disagree on the main purpose of a pilot.
Boo hoo. I don't mean realism in real life. I mean a reasonable explanation. A show needs to make sense in some way.
ReplyDeleteI will be pissed if Doctor Fate doesn't make at least one appearance lol The moment she picked up the helmet i screamed Smallville in my head and then said quick call Chloe Sullivan and ask her if the helmet is still in her possession lol
ReplyDeleteDon't suppose CW would try their hand with Doctor Fate or do they prefer a Hero show with a large fan base like Green Arrow and The Flash.
The moment Liv picked up Doctor Fate helmet memories of Chloe Sullivan of Smallville came rushing back to me lol
ReplyDeleteI really liked the pilot :) Matt Ryan acting was amazing!
ReplyDeleteI'm disapointed! I watched the first 10 or 15 min and was so board I gave up. I always say you know a good show after 30sec. of watching.
ReplyDeleteThen you're talking about coherence, not realism.
ReplyDeleteOr realism inside the mythology of the show, but not realism just alone.
