The CW hit is tackling a major first in Season 10: At the 2014 Summer TCA Press Tour, showrunner Jeremy Carver revealed to E! News that Supernatural's 200th episode will be something of a "musical-ish" episode, which the longrunning series has never done. Feel free to take a moment to bask in the sheer awesomeness of this idea.

"I think it'll be one of the more amusing and engaging episodes we've done in a while. I think we can safely call this a meta episode," Carver previewed of the milestone outing, which will be the fifth episode of the new season. "We're going pretty meta. I would just describe it as something of a love letter to our fans and there will be songs."

Of course, we had some immediate follow-up questions:

Are Jensen and Jared singing? "I cannot comment any further than that. [Laughs.]"
Will there be dancing? "Potentially."
Is it just one song? "There will be more than one song."
Will they be original songs or covers? "There will be a little of both. It's just going to be real fun and it's a real celebration of the show and particularly the fans of the show."

  1. I'm scared.

  2. Me too, I'm not a fan of anything Fan Fiction.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I love fic but when it's the title of the episode? Little worried.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I hate meta episodes with everything I've got. The 200th episode? Really?

    ReplyDelete
  5. This episode will also be 'Musical-ish'.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I like to read (and write) some fan fics based on canon. For the actual show, as Klutzy girl said, "I'm scared".

I HATE episodes based on Meta.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Okay, I'm even more scared now. WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING?

    ReplyDelete
  8. The Jensen Ackles hour great for his fans, likely a waste of an hour for Sam/Jared fans.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Oh God. So much "nope" is happening in my brain right now. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  10. I have a bad feeling about this (said in a Harrison Ford voice). Meta really hasn't gone over well since The French Mistake, and Robbie Thompson is one of my least favorite writers. Maybe the plot will be fans kidnapping Ben Edlund and forcing him to write the episode instead?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I just commented in another thread about how Supernatural should take a pass regarding another meta episode because IMO "The French Mistake" was the worst Supernatural episode to date.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Really? I found it funny, although meta never ranks as high on my list as some of the more serious ones (with the possible exception of the earlier Chuck ones because they had serious plot development as well). But the ones since then have all seemed to take a jab at fans one way or another. Even when I think the joking was well-intentioned, it just sets fans on edge when fans are the target of the joke. And Thompson has a pattern of making the Winchesters (especially Sam) seem like guest stars on the show. That is not acceptable for the 200th episode.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm just happy it's written by Robbie Thompson and not the dreaded duo! But still I hoped Carver himself wrote the 200th, he's a crappy SR, but one of the best writers of the show.

I'm not eager to see another meta, but I guess it's the only way to squeeze musical in SPN. lol (just imagine our fierce hunters jumping around singing and dancing. >_< )
I hope they're at least creative in their new meta-ism!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Apparently Misha can sing as well, so the Dean and Cas hour while Sam remains silent?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Jared can't sing? (not I really need to see any of them sing, unless it's karaoke or off-tune Bon Jovi in the Impala)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh God, I just had a thought. Thompson loves to tease the Destiel shippers, and he's going to use this meta excuse to go nuts with a whole lot of suggestion that they'll argue doesn't really mean anything because it's just in a meta episode. And the fandom will be in an uproar.

    ReplyDelete
  17. That's the impression I've gotten, although I could be wrong. Certainly Jensen has said he was waffling between music and acting as a career. On another board it was mentioned that Misha sings well. I'm hoping Jared can get by for a musicalish episode. I know Alyson Hannigan had one line in Once More With Feeling because she refused to sing onscreen. It's the 200th episode, so I'm pretty sure they won't leave Jared out.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yeah they've gotten increasingly worse when they do it every season. I still don't know if I like all the stuff in season four with the Supernatural books (it's amusing but it takes you out of the show's "reality" and just makes you think that you're watching a fictional show acknowledging it's fictional, and I don't necessarily like that in the long run.)

    ReplyDelete
  19. I don't have a problem with meta episodes in general if they are done cleverly with a wink and nod to the audience. I don't even mind if Supernatural makes well intentioned jabs in the fans' direction. I just thought "The French Mistake" tried way too hard and instead of being light hearted and fun, it was a bit overbearing.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I feel this is a really cheap idea, IMO milestone episodes should be somewhat meaningful. Ah well. Maybe at the 300th. (lol)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Of all the episodes they could choose to turn SPN into Glee...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Chuck and his books were okay. He made me laugh, especially liked him in "The End".

But yeah, things have just gone downhill in taking me out of the show. Meta definitely takes me out of that world.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Whether Jensen can sing or not, it is widely acknowledged that DEAN cannot sing. If he can suddenly sing in this episode, they have some explaining to do.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I really want this to be good. Sounds like a really fun episode on paper. Please be awesome...

    ReplyDelete
  25. it's a bad idea.GA also had episode like this, was definitely worst episode of the series!! Just hoping the guys surprise us for this very special episode!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm leery too because 'canonically' Dean and Sam can't sing (Jensen's great singing in S2 Simon Said was apparently forgotten).

The SG1 200th was a "fun and quirky episode" but I did not like it at all.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Great achievement for any TV Show!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Agree. I remember many questions about musical episodes were asked , and JP was always like "nope", and JA kept repeating "Dean CAN'T sing. So the only way it can work if guys somehow got into parallel universe where everyone sings and they like "wtf???""
So I think "musical-ish" would be something like that. I bet Dean and Sam wont be singing, but reacting. It could be hilarious is they do it right :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I bet boys wont be singing at all.

    ReplyDelete
  30. And Thompson has a pattern of making the Winchesters (especially Sam) seem like guest stars on the show. That is not acceptable for the 200th episode.

This X 100! I'm dreading that Charlie will show up to remind 'us' of how 'dumbed down' Sam is around her.

    ReplyDelete
  31. It's Meta and the 'rules' are always thrown into the nearest wormhole in metas. (gloomy in advance : X)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yeah it's been done many times. As long as they pull it off right, i'm for it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes! It's going to be so funny.

    ReplyDelete
  34. That's my big worry. That the 200th episode will become an ode to Charlie because boy does he love her.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I hope not. I'm sick and tired of the writers think they're being hilarious by acknowledging shippers, and the shippers being too uptight to see a joke for what it is.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Travis Crincoli19 July 2014 at 00:53

i hope its a repeat of "Eye of the tiger"

    ReplyDelete
  37. Let her stay in Oz for at least a while, not re-emerge in the 200th episode which should be focused more on the 'brothers' even though Dean will likely stay a uncured demon through at least - conservatively - the first half half dozen episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Dear god why are the comments on here so negative, the fans have been asking for a musical for years now, it's been asked at literally every convention. Plus the writers are not idiots they are supernatural and so they are gona pull this off in supernaturally brilliant way, hve some faith I personally just got giddy from the idea.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Now they do the musical episode. With a title that completely turns me off of watching it. Thanks, SPN.

    ReplyDelete
  40. well then I AM OUT!

    ReplyDelete
  41. well whatever happen's can't be that bad Right? Who am I kidding but if its really funny I watch it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yep, the 100th episode is still a top favorite of mine.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Jensen said he purposely chose to make Dean a bad singer because he didn't think Dean's lifestyle lent itself to any choir/music type experience.

    ReplyDelete
  44. It's Jeremy Carver so the rules are always thrown in the nearest wormhole under any circumstance.

    ReplyDelete
  45. It would defintely be funnier if they were themselves but trapped in some musical like they were trapped in acting world for The French Mistake. Just nothing liek Buffy please. It was hilarious but beyond Tara, Anya, Giles, and sometiem Dawn, none of them had any business singing.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Lol - there's many things I don't intend to forgive Carver for - beyond the Samelia disaster of S8; close to the top of the list is that he allowed the beautiful Reaper canon established in Faith, IMTOD and Death Takes a Holiday and Death's Door to be perverted into the 'Reapers were always Angels' crap, "Rogue Reapers" - post apocalypse, I can accept; Reapers being able to find ANYONE I accept.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Sam didn't look. Jeremy Carver makes up his own canon that that's their rule. Yep I'm done. Didn't know about the reapers though. That sucks out loud too.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Don't mean to nag but the writers haven't really impressed us lately that much.Creativity is at a all time low nowhere near the quality of season 4 and 5!! We all want to get back that quality back, don't we? It's natural to be a bit skeptic about what they are going to present for such a special episode,it's 200 episode after all!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. If anyone but Carver was doing this it might get me excited, but his track record for me has been dismal. I loved the Buffy musical, and of course I will be watching it with high hopes.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I have The French Mistake as one of my top 10 eps, loved them making fun of themselves and the show.

    ReplyDelete
  51. OH PLEASE, don't even think about Charlie. ;) I hope to never see her again.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I was a big Buffy fan but the musical episode was one I never could bring myself to rewatch.

    ReplyDelete
  53. There are a lot of fan requests for things I'd never want to watch. This fits in this category. Sorry but I don't have the same faith in writers that you do.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I don't think it's going to be a musical. I think there will be a lot of fan favorite music in the episode but I'm not calling it a "musical" until I hear more. I do not believe they're going Buffy. There is a reason a question was asked on Twitter about what classic rock songs we would like to see on the show.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I'm on the fence about this...part of me thinks it could be awesome and another part of me is seriously concerned...my only question about the episode is "Is Dean (or Dean's body since Jensen has said that "Dean" is dead) still a demon? I feel like a musical-ish episode could be interesting but I feel like it's bad timing...

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm currently rewatching all of SPN from the first season and sure season 4 and 5 had top notch quality but that's mainly cuz it was the epitome of the major arc Eric kripke set up for the show, it's expected to have the best plot. Things did go downhill for season 6 and 7 with the leviathans dragged on but 8 and especially 9 I felt gained back the essence of SPN and the writers went places that still shock me. I agree 200 is a big ass number so many expectations but doesn't mean fans should be putt off by the idea, trust the creators and the actors we've come this far with them.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Well it doesn't really say that carver is behind the idea and I just looked it up Robbie Thompson is writing it. I haven't seen that Buffy episode, sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm not going to watch it.

    ReplyDelete
  59. And it's the 200th episode too. I was hoping it would be something epic, but no. It's another embarrassing meta episode. Yeah, thanks a lot SPN. We "normal" fans really appreciate it. I bet the idiots on Tumblr are ecstatic, though. They're probably making some kind of musical gifs as we speak.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Not really. Many are concerned about a musical episode. Some are cautiously hoping it will be good. Others are happy. It's a mixed bag over on Tumblr. Just like here lots of people can see where it can go very, very wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  61. They'll end up being DJs playing bad house music.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Ha! And that will be preferable.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Why do the Spn writers feel the need to give us these types of episodes?

Writers for other shows don't seem to have this weird kink.

There have been rivers of fanfic written about the various StarTreks while they were on the air , but no-one ever felt the need to put out an episode about/called Fan Fiction.
IMO these meta episodes cheapen SPN; this was supposed to be a little horror show not a comedy.
I cringe to think what Thomson will come up with.

They could have given us something epic for the 200th episode.

An episode concentrated on the brothers alone, perhaps a weechester episode, maybe with a guest appearance of John/ Mary.

Something sentimental and nostalgic that could have warmed viewers' hearts before getting back to the reality of the Carver era!

    ReplyDelete
  64. The one that I can't forgive Carver for is the werewolf mythology. 'Heart' was one of my favorite episodes in the entire series. Sam had to kill Madisen because there was absolutely no way for her to control herself. Cut to a few seasons later ('Sharp Teeth') and there are a whole hoard of werewolves sitting around a kitchen table eating hearts of the nice china dishes. WHAT??? This is not okay! As far as I'm concerned The series ended at the end of season 5 ('Swan Song') and the rest of this has all been something along the lines of fan fiction.(No relation to the name of the 200th episode, which looks like it is going to be a disaster... I miss the old supernatural...).

  66. I'd have totally been into a musical episode a few seasons ago. I think some shows have handled the concept very well - Buffy and Xena come to mind here - and it's definitely something SPN could've had fun with. But it's the Carver Era. And it's titled "Fan Fiction" and stated to be one of the meta stories, which I hate with the fiery passion of a million trillion SUNS, so I think I'm being fair with my negativity.

    ReplyDelete
  67. See, I didn't like the 200th ep of SG1 either. I thought it was just stupid and silly and not in a fun way for me. I'd expected more from an otherwise great show with lots of creative writers. I mean, they'd have to be to reinvigorate the show in the NINTH and TENTH seasons and I fell in love with it all over again.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Is that the one where they brought Adam back? I was diggin' it ... until they killed him for real. Real!Adam was pretty awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  69. That was one of the WORST episodes of this series, IMHO. Hated it.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I thought I was firmly in the minority re: SG1's 200th - I loved that show even though I sort of wished the show had ended in S8 - with Carter & O'Neill together and Daniel and Teal'c fishing in the pond where there was supposed to be no fish ... til there was indicating that there were minor changes after their Time Travel.

Not that I minded "Col. Mitchell" and "Vala" joining the team - I loved the actors! - I would have preferred the PTBs to revive "Farscape instead. :((

    ReplyDelete
  71. Not that Jared has described (but neither JA nor JP had read the script yet as of the TCAs) "Fan Fiction" as being similar to The Real Ghostbusters - only a play based on Chuck's books rather than a 'convention' I feel a little better the episode.

Still I have some 'horror' that RT will trot out Charlie.. she might have written the play/musical as the new 'Chuck Shurley' book expert (queue up shower scene in "Psycho" music - eek!)

(And Charlie will get rid of the ghost solo or whatever the MOTW is this time to show her increasingly irritating competence as a hunter - bleech)

    ReplyDelete
  72. Eric Kripke said he'd never do a "Musical" and neither Jared or Jensen - as you said - were enthused either.
