Carter also confirmed the addition of the alternate ending:

  1. what, in the alternate finale, does lily leave marshall and she ends up with Ted?

  2. I can't believe he just tried to defend that mess.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Haha. That made me chuckle quite loudly. Thanks!

  4. Yep. https://twitter.com/CarterBays/status/452216880061636608

  5. And apparently we "mean the world" to them.

    OH REALLY? REALLY?

  6. HAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Still think it's ridiculous to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Talk about some cheap tactics! Bays realizes that no one wants the HIMYM finale season DVD set because of the terrible ending. So he goes on Twitter and talks about an alternate ending that didn't air, but it will be on the DVD in an effort to drum up interest along with sales. Sorry Carter, too little ... too late.

I think that the fandom are interpreting the finale wrong...I agree that it could've been better, and I'd prefer if they would've ended it differently. Btw I am a die hard HIMYM fan. I just think some of the fandom our being a bit ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Please don't with the "interpreting the finale wrong".

    ReplyDelete
  11. How are we interpreting that mess wrong? They screwed over every single character (except for maybe Marshall), divorced a couple in ten minutes when we just spent the entire season at their wedding (and they built it up for three years beforehand with the wedding mystery), killed the woman we've been waiting nine years for, and then got back a couple that clearly doesn't work when Ted literally just moved on a few weeks ago and said he didn't love her anymore last week! LAST WEEK.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh come on, Tracy's death wasn't a surprise !

    ReplyDelete
  13. Sure, they alluded to it, but it wasn't set in stone! They could have changed their minds any time.

I was hoping she and Ted would live happily ever after with their kids, but maybe that's just me.

    ReplyDelete
  14. No i was hoping that too but I think the ending wasn't bad. But the season 9 is a shame. They had to do the finale in the whole season.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Wasn't bad? WASN'T BAD. Uh, wow. Think we're going to have to agree to disagree there.

    ReplyDelete
  16. So many ridiculously bitter people here. lmao

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah, forever bitter here. Watched this show for nearly a decade of my life and all they had to do was one thing, and they ruined everything in forty minutes when they didn't have to.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yes the ending was coherent ( at least for the first season ). I understand your feeling but i don't sharing it. ( I'm french so my english is not perfect. )

    ReplyDelete
  19. No guarantee the alternate ending will make fans any happier! XD

From what I read years ago one of their the original plans was to introduce the mother on the series at the very, very end of the series and they were not even sure if she would be named!

OF course that was before the show got extended to a ninth season and the mother actually became a full fledged character on the show.

Frankly I bet they would have been hyping alternate endings no matter if the finale was loved, hated or somewhere in the middle. They always promote the box set!

    ReplyDelete
  20. you guys are mad coz barney&robin's relationship didnt worked out for the second time and also you guys didnt understand what robin said to ted before she got married to barney and not to mention this season really lacked the ted&mother(tracy) development all we got was flashbacks coz she died 6y earlier when ted starting to tell the story to their child and its kinda funny his children knew that ted never was really moved on from robin except y'all who is whining about how they didnt liked the finale

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yeah, it would make sense if it was still 2005. But we had nine years of character development they threw down the drain.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes, but that is the fault of the show...how, exactly? You chose to watch for that many years. How many finales AREN'T divisive among the fanbase? A good writer - even a TV one - tells the story THEY want to tell, and considering several people in various places do like the finale it's not like they let everyone down. If you can't accept that shows are going to make creative decisions that you don't like or even accept that a show will not end how you think it should (because no show ever will) there's really no point in watching TV in the first place. And there's no reason to complain about how long you spent being invested in this show, because did it not entertain you for the majority of that time? If it did then the show's goal is accomplished. Disliking 40 minutes does not negate a decade of entertainment.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You're right... I think Robin and Barney should married in season 5 not season 9 and Ted should met Tracy in the season 8 finale.

    ReplyDelete
  24. And now Craig is trying it. Are we supposed to be happy there was a Plan B?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Finals aren't usually this divisive and hated. I've seen some great finales (Friends for example) and this wasn't one of them.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Eh, season five was really bad all around and not good for them.

    ReplyDelete
  27. This is exactly why I don't "ship." I don't watch show's solely to see if a specific couple will get together. I watch tv for the entertainment and enjoy the ride it takes me on. If you watch expecting something to happen in the end and it doesn't, well then that's your fault in the first place for setting yourself up for disappointment.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't ship but I was majorly disappointed too.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I've seen Ted/Robin shippers who are pissed about what went down. I've seen non-shippers angry about it too.

    ReplyDelete
  30. We are indeed, I thought the finale was one of (or two of) the best episodes of the series!

    ReplyDelete
  31. A good writer(s) absolutely should tell the story they want to tell. That is their right and their creative vision. However, it's also the audience's right to voice their displeasure in how that story is told.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Bearded Timbino5 April 2014 at 00:48

You're absolutely right. The whiners haven't come close to stopping yet. When people don't get exactly what they want, the childishness shines the brightest. The creators didn't "owe" the fan a damn thing and yet so many people think they were "owed" a specific ending. Ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Not speaking for anybody else but myself when I say this, but it's really difficult to not start "shipping" someone on a show when you're devoted to it. I started watching Under the Dome purely for the Dome, but now, the bigger reasons have become the characters, specifically "shipping" Barbie/Julia and Joe/Norrie and the Dome is just a subplot for me. That's not related to this particular series, though, but I just wanted to give feedback :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Me included. I absolutely love Ted and Robin, but I was still majorly disappointed by the finale and consider it one of the worst, if not the actual worst, series finale I have ever seen. I fully respect that others disagree with me as long as they respect my opinion as well.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Completely agree on both points!

I do draw the line at the fan's anger causing them to say one episode ruined the entire series or that the creators/ writers of the series got it wrong.

They have every right ot not like something but they cross the line if they say they understood the show better than the writers and creators!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yup. Good for Ted/Robin shippers who are happy, but stop throwing it in people's faces and trying to tell us how it all makes sense. It really doesn't.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I am not a B/R shipper, but did you forget about Robin floating away when Ted got over her?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yep, the "you guys are ridiculous for being bitter" comments really get to me.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I have one question for the people who hates the finale : Are you gonna watch the spin off ? At least the pilot ?

    ReplyDelete
  40. You mean when he got over his obsession with her, right?
Because he may have gotten over his obsession, but he always loved her.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I will try out the pilot, mostly because SpoilerTV will get a screener and I wanna review it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Nope. I was going to give HIMYD a shot because it sounded interesting. But now? No chance in hell.

    ReplyDelete
  43. It's OK to disagree with the fans that say the finale ruined the series, but there is no line to be drawn, because this is based on opinions. Do not say fans cross the line when they say they understood the show better than the creators and writers because, guess what, there are some really terrible writers out there and we all have a preference regarding a show's progression and ending. I personally think the finale was trash. No happy ending at all that I was wanting. That doesn't make me right or wrong, so don't say I am. :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. yellowumbrella gal5 April 2014 at 00:56

I'm grateful that they're giving us an alternative ending. They didn't have to do it, and could've just stuck to only having the one ending that aired. That ending was one they wanted all along. I mean it's their show!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Is it me or is Carter Bays a compulsive liar? For years now he has been going back on what he said in interviews.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Also called Internet trolls :) Better to try to ignore them, but I do know how it feels. Having people trash-talk my favorite drama Under the Dome can actually ruin my entire day. Right in da feelz! :P

    ReplyDelete
  47. Many writers are. Shonda Rhimes is an even bigger one.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Obvious troll is obvious. And annoying. Very annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  49. and your point is? and let me remind you Ted was a friend of both of them and im pretty sure he valued their happiness so he stepped back not once but twice, he supported both them so they can be happy together but it didnt worked out so idc why so many ppls was freaking out about this

    ReplyDelete
  50. I can understand hating the finale easily enough, or even hating the final season. I cannot see how disliking either affects how funny the earlier episodes were. Maybe one or two episodes are even slightly effected by the outcome of the series.

I have not enjoyed plenty of finales or had series end without a finally due to cancellation and it never once made me hate the show. Mileage may vary, but it sounds so petty and melodramatic to say one episode retroactively changed previously formed opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Nicolás Festa5 April 2014 at 01:02

Obviously they're gonna do the same thing i did with the episode they aired. Cut the part when Tracy "got sick": you see the photo with her holding the coffe mug and then cut into her at the train station meeting Ted. He says "And kids, this is the story of HIMYM" and cut to black, followed by the HIMYM logo and the credits.

It also gives kind of hope for Barney and Robin for that look they give each other at Ted and Tracy's wedding(my sister pointed that out).

Is funny how the HIMYM Facebook Page is trying really hard to post "video moments" of the series and all the people are cursing in the comments Jajaja

They know they fucked up. It's Writing 101: You can't ignore character development. Yes, the show wasn't supposed to last 9 years, but it did; and you, as the creative mind, need to aknowledge the changes that it brought.

You can't keep your character on stand by for 7 years so that ending works... you must develop them.

I'm particulary mad 'cause this was a show i was sure it wouldn't do it wrong... I mean, we always knew the final scene! We knew what the show was about.

Also, if they wanted to kill Tracy like that they shouldn't introduce her as a regular character and make people get fond with her and Ted.

If she was only a 2 minutes cameo then it would be ok to give her a off-camera death and a background on the Finale.

This ending would had been perfect on Season 3... But now? It's just a bunch of crap.

    ReplyDelete
  52. And dating your friends ex-wife is OK, I guess?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Oh interesting. I want to know what ending to the pilot they did.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Because even after he got over her they showed he still loved her. Not to mention that is the theme of the entire fricking series!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I will write a review, IF we get a screener. CBS sent us the screeners of their new shows last year, so I am hoping they do this year too.

    ReplyDelete
  56. coz dating with your friends ex-gf wouldnt be the same thing right?

i suggest rewatch the scene when robin and ted has a talk before she marries to barney and think about it,

    ReplyDelete
  57. I loved the finale as much or more than any episode of the series, but I'm not sure I will watch HIMYD honestly..

I am attracted to and enjoy series because of all the parts and right now I just do not know enough about HIMYD.

Besides, I have loved and hated shows by the same showrunner and creator... My opinion of one show does not influence my opinion of another..

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yes, that is my point. Ted got so mad when Barnet ans Robin slept together, he end his friendship with Barney. So dating your friends ex-wife is much much worse.

    ReplyDelete
  59. It's a rare event when it happens, but it does happen. For example, I hate the second season of THE FOLLOWING, but I loved the first season. I just pretend the 1st season had a happy ending despite its cliffhanger and I can move on happily forgetting season 2. But let's say that UNDER THE DOME ends with the Dome disappearing into thin air and the army declaring the situation normal simply because it's gone; that would change the entire output of the series for me since I am expecting the military to do everything they can to get the Dome away and I am expecting to see what happens with the characters in the end. It's all based on expectations gathered throughout the seasons and yes, opinions change as new storylines come to life, but sometimes the outcome can be so disastrous it can completely change the opinion of the series overall.

    ReplyDelete
  60. OMG thank you!
I have been wondering how people ignore one fact and cling to another!

Plus, let's be honest, ona TV show all the friends typically end up dating and breaking up with one another. Par for the course.

    ReplyDelete
  61. And isn't that sort of a sad storyline? "I've been loving this woman for so long, but I am now beginning to get over her. Oh wait, that's not what happens according to HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. Guess I'm doomed!" Granted, I'm exaggerating, but that's the message that's spread, at least the message I'm getting.

    ReplyDelete
  62. bro, i was talking about when Ted&Robin broke up and Barney&Robin happened the 1st time aka (slep together)
lol since when Ted ended his friendship with Barney show me some proofs

    ReplyDelete
  63. I was talking about the same.
Have you even watched all the episodes. Ted ended his friendship with Barney in 3x17: "The Goat" and they became friends again in the season 3 finale.

    ReplyDelete
  64. "Just a bunch of crap"

And that, kids, is a recap of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER.
    Hahaha :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. I cannot see episodes like "The Final Page" and "Right Place, Right Time" the same way again. Plus episodes in which Barney shows even a little character development because I know that he becomes even more gross later (The Perfect Month, now really?)

    ReplyDelete
  66. Honestly, it is just beyond my ken!

Maybe it's just me, but If I liked an episode before a future episode simply does not and cannot change that opinion. One does not affect the other with me. I may like a series and dislike the finale, but If I liked the series the first time I watched I will always like it.

I can understand sour feelings and hating how they wrap things up, but I just cannot see how that changes how I felt about something int the past.

I guess I'm just glad that my viewing pleasures are not so easily changed! XD

    ReplyDelete
  67. Nicolás Festa5 April 2014 at 01:18

Well, after all the crap they're getting they will not pull another like this one for sure... I will give it a chance.

We know the structure of the show; now we need to see if the characters are interesting. I would hate if they're a copy of the original "GANG"(F**K U ROBIN; I CALL THEM THAT!)..

    ReplyDelete
  68. its been a while since i saw that episode and im not going to rewatch it right now just coz of this, but barney also told him "friendship over" and yet they still were a friend but answer this why ted can not be with robin after she got divorced from barney a several years ago while barney is allowed to be with robin after ted and robin broke up and also since when robin cant be with the person who she wants? if that would mean ted

i suggest rewatch the scene when robin and ted has a talk before she marries to barney and think about it (coz its necessary again i can even give you a yt link coz im sure somebody uploaded that scene too tho)

    ReplyDelete
  69. I just see Barney as finding out that is the real him and there is NOTHING wrong with that in my opinion. People should accept their friends without expecting them to change.

I have had friends like Barney. Not as prolific maybe,... maybe worse! One won a bet seeing who could sleep with the most men over a summer when she was 21. I enjoyed her friendship, but I would have never dated her! XD

With Barney, I personally always hated how he was the last couple years of the series. I found him half as funny (at best) as he used to be. He was always funniest when alone and on the prowl to me. In the finale I found him the funniest he had been in years!

    Different strokes...

    ReplyDelete
  70. Ted clearly says that he doesn't want to be "bros anymore" with Barney in the episode I mentioned.

And Robin pretty much backtracked to what she said to Ted after she saw Barney before the wedding, I won't accept that excuse.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Joey dated Rachel after Ross and Rachel not only had been married, but also had a kid together.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Firstly, different shows. Secondly, didn't Ross get mad at him?

    ReplyDelete
  73. I know they are different shows, but they are both television sitcoms about friends. Yeah, Ross punched him. But what I mean is, we probably shouldn't be too pissed at the finale for the ted-dating-friends-ex-wife reason because, as i said, it is a sitcom. We do have to apply some suspension of disbelief when it comes to the rules and boundaries of in group dating. (for the record I did think the finale was fine, there are a lo of things I would change about it but it upsets me a little when people are saying they are going to boycott all of the 200+ episodes

    ReplyDelete
  74. Pablo Troncoso5 April 2014 at 01:52

I think we do mean the world to them, after all we gave them 9 seasons of income. But the characters is a different story.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Well said. I liked the finale (for the most part). However I don't think it's fair to say to any fan of the show that they just "didn't get it". This applies to people on both sides of the fence. I don't like it when people who liked the finale tell everyone else that they have "missed the point". I explained the other day why I liked the finale, but that was my own personal view based on things that I took from the final episode. It may not have been the point at all, but I liked it for those reasons. However we all need to stop being such pricks to each other haha. If I have one more person say to me that I'm not a fan of the show because I liked the finale, or that I must be some shipper (which I'm not), or that one guy who said I had a fetish for tragedy or something, I am going to scream haha. This isn't directed at you at all, but I wish anti-finale folks would just let me be happy that I enjoyed the finale and try and understand why I did, instead of just force feeding me all the reasons why I shouldn't like it. I've listened to those reasons and I agree with a lot of them, and my opinion of the last episode has dropped accordingly, but I do still like it. I just wish some anti-finale folks would take a deep breath and try and hear us out too. Misery does love company I suppose.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Pablo Troncoso5 April 2014 at 01:58

I agree with you completely; after calming down these days I came to realize how sad it is that the fandom has been so widely divided. We all cared about the show and followed it for quite some time, we all have our reasons for liking or disliking the finale.
I may think that the writers did a lousy job, but I have nothing against those who liked the ending, they have their reasons for loving it such as I have my reasons to hate it.
I did at some point say that those who liked the finale were probably shippers, but that came out of anger, there are many people who liked the finale for different reasons and I came to respect them. I hope that both side can come to that, no one should feel insulted for what someone else thinks, there can be arguments, but there is no reason for the fight that is going on in this fandom

    ReplyDelete
  77. Pablo Troncoso5 April 2014 at 02:05

So is it ok for Barney to be like a sociopath? Really? He left a girl on tent once, with a bear near by!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Pablo Troncoso5 April 2014 at 02:14

No, it doesn't negate the three years of laugh I had with the show, but it does heavily re-contextualize several episodes and that affects my future enjoyment of the series. It's not that 9 years were lost, it is that the next one to come are.
The thing with HIMYM finale is that the show is about a story being tell, instead of many shows that are linear from present time to future time. If someone disliked the finale of Fringe, for instance, they can still enjoy the past episodes because they mean the same thing they used to. However, with HIMYM, the finale gave the show a completely different meaning than most people gave the show.
There was no "right" point to the show to begin with, some people saw it as how Ted and Robin would end up together, some as how Ted would get to her ultimate true love Tracy, and some others were just in for whatever went along. The finale takes one way to look at the show, and the whole story becomes about that. If the finale was about how Ted and Tracy lived happily ever after I'm sure those who claim who loved the series would be furious and would probably be asking for a different ending (not everyone, but most of them I believe).
I'm not going into details as to why I think the finale was a mistake (I already did it several times), I just think that there is a reason why people think their show is ruined. I watched "Right Place, Right Time" and it wasn't the same as before, I couldn't stop thinking that it was essentially meaningless.
I think some anti-finale are going too far, but the rage is there for a reason

    ReplyDelete
  79. Absolutely agree!

They had an 8 year plan that revealed Tracy at the very end and stupidly added that 9th season. The mother was never supposed to be part of the series and introducing her to fans screwed with some fans head!

Personally, I loved a lot of the shenanigans of Season 9 and I loved CM as Tracy. She had great chemistry with Ted. I loved seeing that tiny bit of the Ted and Tracy love story, I just always knew the show was never about that love story in particular and suspected what the endgame was .

Sucks for the people who the series now because of one episode.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Yes, absolutely!

Is it okay for Lily to meddle in everyone's affairs to their faces and behind their backs? Yes! That's who she is.

Anytime in life someone expects someone else to change it is their problem, not the person they expect to change! We can accept people for who they are or not, but we cannot expect them to be the people we want them to be if they do not want to (or are incapable of) being that person!

    ReplyDelete
  81. I have never heard the proper definition, but I see shipping as a very specific thing.

    - It IS NOT wanting two people to get together, stay together or end up together.
    - It is being so blinded by that desire (even if it goes against every theme of the series) that the reality of the series is lost and no other outcome can be appreciated.

And I am not referring just to HIMYM.
According to what I've read here, there are plenty of reasons to not like that finale, and every opinion is correct and on point.... XD

    ReplyDelete
  82. Still love the real ending, and will absolutely buy this box set.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I think people are misinterpreting Robin/Ted. They broke up for an extremely specific reason at the end of season 2--not because they didn't work together as a couple, but because they wanted entirely different things. Ted wanted the family/kids, Robin wanted to travel the world. They got those things and were happy to have gotten those things. But now that they've achieved those things, those things are no longer obstacles to a relationship between them.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I don't really care when people don't see Ted/Robin working, but I've never understood how people think that Barney/Robin works better.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I second that motion.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Pablo Troncoso5 April 2014 at 03:34

People change, Barney changed, and then he reverted.
I'm not the same person who i was 9 years ago and I don't think I'm going to revert to that guy because something happened, if anything I'm going to keep changing, but I'm moving forward not backwards.
I accepted Barney for who he was in season 1, but I think he was a completely different person in season 9. My trouble is not accepting who Barney is, is that he changed and then in a couple of minutes of air time (notice, air time, not the same as chronological time) he changed back to who he was in season 1-3. I thought the whole point of him changing was to humanize him a little bit, I had no trouble when he was somewhat cartoon-ish back in the day because he was still finding that way, but reverting to his old self after getting through so much progression over the years was something I didn't like

    ReplyDelete
  87. You see it as he completely changed and then reverted, but I do not.

I always saw it as everyone around him tried to force him to be something he is not. He tried to go with it since he loved Robin, but ultimately he discovered he simply could not devote his life to a single girlfriend or wife.

To me there is nothing wrong with that. It's who he is. The road he took to discovering that fact WAS his evolution.. So he never regressed.

But, honestly I was waiting for the Barney and Robin thing to end since it began. I liked his character much, much more in the first 3 or 4 seasons and it was inevitable to the endgame.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Yeah, I really don't get where fans feel they are "owed" something when it comes to the outcome of a narrative. Craig and Carter set out to tell a story, and they told that story. They had an ending in mind the entire time, so why would they change that because a certain portion of fans wanted things a certain way? It'd be like going into a novelist's home and insisting they alter a book's conclusion because they wanted a character to have a different fate. Why should it really be that different with such a narrative-driven television show?

    ReplyDelete
  89. THANK YOU. This is the story Carter and Craig wanted to tell. I loved it, others didn't. I haven't necessarily liked the ending of a lot of books I've read, but it doesn't minimize the narrative and the message the narrative was trying to get across.

    ReplyDelete
  90. For real though. I'm not going to sit here and say I haven't wanted Ted/Robin to happen since season 1, because I have, but I didn't hinge the show on it. Same for Barney/Robin, which I've never cared for, or any other relationship in the show. I enjoyed the ride, as you say, despite the parts I didn't like. Frankly, I just liked to see where the adventures took the characters that I'd grown to love. If I liked the outcome, awesome. If I didn't, oh well, still love the characters.

    ReplyDelete
  91. They wouldn't have made it if they thought it was a mess.

Could not agree more. We're all paying for cable but not a single channel, writer, or creator is forcing is to watch a single thing or love everything they're doing. They have a job to entertain and deliver a well thought out narrative. Most shows perform this quite acutely.

  95. I'm honestly kind of sick of the hate Carter and Craig are getting for the finale. Like or don't like the ending, that's your prerogative. But don't hate on them for telling the story they were always planning to tell. That'd be like hating Shakespeare for having Romeo and Juliet off themselves. Or JK Rowling for killing off so many characters. Or Harper Lee for convicting Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird. Or Ian McEwan for almost the entirety of Atonement being made up. Like these creative decisions or not, the writers made them, and to change them would be to change the story they were trying to tell. I haven't liked every creative decision Carter and Craig have made, but it was theirs to make, because it was THEIR story. I was fortunate enough to love the ending and the message I got from it; sorry if you weren't. But, again, hate the ENDING, not the writers for conceiving it that way.

  96. Honestly, I think that they were quite possibly influenced by the viewers in so far as they decided to make the mother a fully cast character with a name and many scenes. I do not think that was ever part of the original plan.

I think the planned finale for Season 8 was going to be Ted meeting the mother for the first time, maybe just seeing them meeting without any conversation even. Maybe end it with Barney pulling a "Haaaaave you met Ted?" and as the woman turns to Ted we cut to him finishing his story to the kids and the rest of the finale as it aired.

At that point before all of the Season 9 sightings of Tracy she could be a nameless entity that had only seconds on the series and it would have made sense. I think that ending would have worked better personally.

That all changed when the show was extended by a year. At that point they decided to have Barney and Robin's marriage be the location Ted meet the mother of his kids to they already had that plan but thought it would be fun to have the entire season take place there.

  97. They slapped the fans in the face with that finale. Now they suddenly realize, they need to make the fans happy or they won't make any money on the dvd sales. So they throw in the bone of the "alternate ending." No thanks, not buying it. Apologize for that travesty you showed us at last Monday and admit you were wrong.

  98. Yes he's been saying for a while the show is about Ted giving up the wrong girl who is Robin, so he can be with the right girl, Tracy. Liar!

(This is just my opinion) The thing is though that How I met your mother has always been about the journey and they could have stuck to this principle if we just saw Ted and Tracy's first meeting at the end. But they chose to do a spin and kill the mother which had always been planned. Now putting what the fandom wanted aside the main problem with this is how it was done. Everything happened in the last episode where we saw Barney regress back to his old self only to be suddenly propelled back(unnecessary), a divorce which I did understand but came after a whole season dedicated to the couples wedding and a break up of friendships that has alway been an integral part of the show. Also Lilly and Marshall moving out of their apartment after all that drama over living in the suburbs was annoying as it was just skimmed over. Overall it I don't really understand the message that HIMYM was trying to do it didn't seem to be about the journey, friendship or the one. It seem'd to say that you'll never get over the girl that you had unrequited love with…

Yes! A million times yes! I see so many T/R shippers who disregard a normal happily ever after finale as "boring" and "obvious." Yet those make up the best finales in TV history!

A finale isn't about twists. It's about saying goodbye to the audience and leaving them having enjoyed the story. Even for a show that pushes the envelope this is the time to play it safe, because there's no future chance to say any more and right any wrongs.

Don't be silly. She leaves him for Robin. Because if we learned anything, it's that it is always about Robin.

Also good point about that look between B/R at the wedding. I noticed that too and remember having a glimmer of false hope that they weren't dicking up the ending after all.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Which is my point. I am not even a Barney/Robin shipper. But they played the B/R shippers by spending so much time on their relationship and then having them divorce minutes into the finale.

  104. It's not a retelling a Love in the Time of Cholera. The creators just attached an ending similar to Love in the Time of Cholera retconning their own show.

Well, I can understand your point, but you do get why some people didn't like the outcome; we liked the Barney that progressed, because he did say at some point "I slept with over 200 women and that left me feeling nothing but broken", so he wasn't happy being like that, he came a long way, he was so sincerely happy with Robin, and then things ended so abruptly (for the viewers, I know there is a 3 years gap) and he went back to be the person he said made him feel broken. It was sad for me, really sad.
That's why I can't come to like what the finale did to Barney; the thing with his daughter came as forced progression to the reversion I saw in the character, it was weird and out of place for me, but I won't deny that seeing Neil Patrick Harris acting when he held that baby was poignant, and probably the highlight of the finale for me (along with the train station scene). Everything else... well, I have already said it multiple times

  106. Pablo Troncoso5 April 2014 at 12:30

I liked Barney/Robin because it seemed like 2 broken people bringing the best of each other; they were so damaged, but them being together seemed to bring out some of their best qualities, specially for Barney who matured and became a better man for Robin, and when Robin was with Barney it always looked like to me that, despite her doubts, she was able to be more honest with herself and with everyone around her. It was quite lovely for me, I liked them as a couple since day 1.

As for Ted and Robin, it's a completely different story and I already said a few times why I think they don't work; the main issue is that Ted had to try and try and try over and over and over again to get her, he wore her down until she said yes at the end of season 1 (Ted's parents followed that logic and they ended up in divorce). Over the years Ted never let go of her fully, and on some level he would always keep trying, but Robin would keep rejecting him, and as such it never felt quite natural to me.
When Robin and Barney started dating in the season 4 finale and in season 5 it came out more naturally, Barney didn't have to try, Barney only had to try later on. in seasons 7 and 8, to prove to her that he was going to be faithful and he was going to give his best as her partner.

  107. You know Barney's so called growth was something that was unrealistic. Men like Barney don't change because of love. If you have sociopath tendencies, you just don't grow of them. You always have sociopathic tendencies. That is a fact. You won't stop being sociopath.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Pablo Troncoso5 April 2014 at 13:00

I study psychology, sociopaths are really hard to deal with and almost never change, but there is a difference between sociopaths tendencies and being an actual sociopath. Barney has the tendencies, but those can be shut down if he is not screwing around, mostly because he focuses on being better for Robin. You may say it's unlikely, but it's not necessarily unrealistic, I've read about cases of people with sociopaths tendencies that are able to overcome them and become better people. Even some sociopaths are able to change, that's the minority, sure, but it's not impossible

    ReplyDelete
  109. I think Barney was more sociopath than having just sociopathic tendencies. His behviour towards women was always gross, and i had hard time believing he would change because of robin.

  110. Really like the look of this boxset - now to wait and see whether it will include extra stuff to make it worth buying when I already have the separate seasons. I feel like I won't be hard to convince...Really looking forward to seeing any deleted scenes, extras or behind the scenes from the finale - hope they put them in the S9 boxset.

  111. See, I viewed it as almost the opposite. I thought that, although they loved each other, they often brought out the worst in each other. I didn't mind their first try at a relationship--I think that Robin did for Barney what Ted did for Robin, which is to make them realize that they were capable of being in a committed relationship and genuinely loving another person. Robin lost her "L-card" to Ted ("falafel") and Barney lost his to her. I don't think Barney would have been capable of that if it hadn't "snuck up on him" through Robin's friendship, but after that he showed he could commit himself to Nora and then Quinn, even if neither relationship worked out. But I never saw Barney/Robin working out either. Throwing two such fiercely independent people who already had commitment issues...it may be fun to watch for a little while, but their divorce was honestly the first thing I guessed about the finale. I never doubted they loved each other, but that's just not always enough to hang a lasting marriage on.

As for Ted/Robin, as you said, they had a couple of big issues that prevented them from pursuing a relationship longer than they did. And like you said as well, Ted was forced to compare it to his parents, who had the same problem of wanting different things, and it led to divorce. And it's quite probable that Ted and Robin would have met the same fate IF they'd ignored their problems and gotten married anyway. Ted would've likely become bitter that he'd never had children, and Robin would have likely resented Ted for preventing her from pursuing career. They saw this, and cue breakup. The way I see it, Ted ended up deluding himself into thinking that, because he loved Robin so much, he could forget about wanting a family. And we may not get to see much into Robin's thoughts on the matter, but I think she was always the one to know that loving each other just wasn't enough to forget those obstacles, which is why I believe she rejected him when he claimed he didn't care about her infertility--she wasn't going to be the one preventing him from having the family he has wanted since episode 1. But once they got what they wanted (the family, the career), the reasons they broke up and stayed apart weren't there any more. That's the way I see it, at least. And my bad, I wrote a lot!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Although I and everyone else loved the opportunity to meet and get to know Tracy, I can't help but think that might have been the better move too. But then again there would probably be even more people (who always thought the show was about meeting the Mother) who would be FUMING if we only got one scene with her. Since they did alter their plans by continuing the show for a year...well, pretty much the entire season would have needed to be differently executed to appease fans while still keeping the same general ending. (*salute*)

    ReplyDelete
  113. Thank you! Agree 100%. I think that Barney had been told so often that his behavior was socially unacceptable, that he HAD to eventually settle down, that he eventually believed it and wanted to give the marriage thing a try with someone he really loved. He realized that's not what he wanted after all, and that should be okay. Not everyone has to or should follow the "fall in love, get married, have kids" formula. He happens to be one of them.

It's not interpreting the finale wrong. It's a poor decision based on the ending they were railroaded into by filming the scene with the kids back in season 1/2. If it had ended after like season 3 or so, it would have worked fine. It's just that the show kept going and developing away from that ending, forcing the need for a rather severe change to get back to the original plan, and it was badly done.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Except the ending would NOT have worked at the end of Season 3. That is one of the points of the entire series!.Timing.

At that period in their lives Robin and Ted were not compatible. Everything on the series after that, their 20 years of life experiences , is what made them compatible later in life.

Robin needed to see the world and establish her career, Ted needed to meet his dream girl and marry her. His time with Tracy and the lessons she taught him are vital in making him the man he is at the end of the show. She taught him there is more than one true love for people and the reality is fantasies do not last forever.

Only after those changes would the two of them be able to make it work. The show is more about the journey than the place you end up.

The creators did what they wanted, but the fans can be frustrated if they don't come to like it. They have their reasons and most of them expressed why they disliked what they thought, that is not childishness at all, the only chidish thing I've seen is the people who outright say "it sucks" and then leave. I, for one, disliked the finale and I said why multiple times, and I think what hurts me the most is that I find the episode disrespectful to the characters in the way that they all seem to regress to their season 1 selves, and as we fans are so invested in these characters we feel disrespected when the charcter work is not right. They may not owe us a good finale, but they owe it to the character, and seeing Barney going back to be a player, Robin drifting apart from the group choosing her career over everything else (including her marriage with Barney), Tracy dying (a character most of us came to love this season) and Ted going after Robin again, even when he claimed multiple times that he got over her, is just too hurtful, it feels like all these characters got poorly treated in the end.

Now, it's my opinion, some other people think this was "a perfect circle" or just "real life is messy" or "good bittersweet ending", but most fans don't see it that way, they see their characters acting as they would do back in season 1 and not in season 9 and that kind of regression hurt us badly.

I respect those who liked the finale, I don't mean to convince them to hate the finale (not at all), I just want them to understand why we're mad, it's coming from somewhere, it has a reason. Also, I don't like those who said "we missed the point" or that "we're not true fans", because we are true fans (we care about the show a lot) and we just saw the show with a different set of eyes (the show was always open to interpretation, which is why a finale like this was such a huge risk to take)

    ReplyDelete
  120. Well, I wouldn't call them losers (although I've been referred to as deluded for liking Ted/Robin, but I digress). Their opinion, their preference, but no need to rub it in. If their divorce is the main reason they hate the finale and now the entire show, that's where I take issue. I didn't like it when Robin and Barney got back together, but I still watched and loved the show.

    ReplyDelete
  121. That is not the story or theme. Not at all.
Not as I see it, or as it was written according to the showrunners.

The story is about Ted and Robin falling in love deeply when they are young, but incompatible. Ted was obsessed with Robin and thought she was his dream girl. They do the get-together and break-up dance numerous times until he accepts they are simply incompatible at that point in their life and he gets over his obsession

She moves on with her career and dates other people, but later discovers she truly loves him and that he is the one that got away. He finds his dream girl and marries her, but when she dies he realizes he still loves Robin, but not only that... now they are at a point in their lives that they are compatible. It was Robin and Ted's love story being told in reverse on the series.

It is a modern re-telling of Ted's favorite book, Love in the Time of Cholera , in many ways!

Some find it frustrating, but it is not their love story - It's Ted's and Robin's love story. In some ways it is even MORE romantic than Ted's love story with Tracy.

  122. this convo is pretty much one sided its like u neglecting what i say but fine, not every ppl thinks the same way like you so w/e

imo writers spent way to much time on Barney&Robin's relationship like spending a entire season on how they get married especially if that was the final and there was barely any Ted&Mother(Tracy) scenes thats the only think which was let down on this season

and if you guys think i was against the Barney&Robin thing y'all wrong (again)

I think the biggest mistakes were that season 9:
    1) Introduced Tracy and made many people care for her.
    2) Spent 21 episodes on a marriage that didn't work.
If Barney and Robin married in 2 episode like Marshall and Lily and then the show actually gave us time to explore their marital issues, then I would have understand the choice to break them up.
And if Tracy stayed as a secret till the final episode, then fans wouldn't be so hurt by her demise.
Then, they would have come to accept the finale better.

I wouldn't have particularly liked it, but I think it would have been better that way. The whole season 9 looks like a mistake now

I can actually see Future Ted and Robin breaking up in a couple of months, then Robin goes for Barney and Ted.... well, hopefully he find his way back to be with Victoria, who I always saw as a perfect match for him. The only reason Ted and Victoria didn't work was because of Robin

    ReplyDelete
  125. How can you tell they are compatible now? If, like you said, it hasn't worked "numerous" times in the past, what makes you so certain it'll work this time just because the show ended this way? It's a "broken" ending - it doesn't guarantee that anything will work. :/
