Beauty and the Beast - Episode 2.16 - About Last Night - Review

12 Mar 2014

Damn, that was an excellent episode! "About Last Night" fired on every possible cylinder, bringing Catherine and Vincent's long separation to an end while working in a cliffhanger just to keep us in delicious suspense over the next month and a half or so.  In fact, this episode was beautifully structured to feel almost like a season finale, since it tied up so many loose ends from storylines that were ready to be put to bed (teehee).  While I have a few reservations about the "Vincent accused of murder" plot, as well as Gabe's character development (or lack thereof), otherwise it couldn't have been more satisfying.  I mean, we had VinCat reuniting, more Vincent and J.T. bonding, action and adventure as the Sam plotline edged closer to resolution, hilarious shenanigans between our core quartet, and even some sweet JT'nT action.  In short,

I loved that "About Last Night" featured the eternally slinky Alunageorge's gorgeous song "You Know You Like it" during the masquerade party, exquisitely hitting on the sexy chemistry between Vincent and Catherine.  Hence, I'll include some of those lyrics in this week's review.

"Some people want me to be heads or tails
I say no way, try again another day
I should be happy, not tipping the scales
I just won't lay, letting my life get away"*

Indeed, Catherine has been letting herself be an emotional pawn on Gabe's chessboard for too long.  It played into her agenda of repressing her feelings for Vincent out of fear of being hurt again, though she also tried to rationalize it with the repetitive phrase "I can't go backwards" this week.  I think Catherine knows very well that she's never been a damsel in distress in her life, and nor has Vincent ever tried to put her in that position.  The problems between them had nothing to do with their relationship being essentially doomed by his beasthood, and everything to do with life just being crazy and hard.  It's about time Cat put her hangups aside and prioritized her happiness over the words Gabe put in her mouth and the smothering agitations that were fogging up her memory of what being with Vincent was actually like.

I loved the use of the pure white screen to open the episode, emphasizing a fresh start for Vincent and Cat as well as the dreaminess of the flashback scenes of their love.  Wow, what a swoon-worthy clip reel that was! There have been so many stunning romantic moments between these two over the show's run, and more were to come in "About Last Night."  Much as the title suggested, Cat awoke with a splash of cold reality water to the face as she realized she was in bed with Vincent.  She immediately clung onto the idea of "break-up sex" and dismissed her night with Vincent as a mistake, much to his chagrin.

I know Catherine's been a pain sometimes lately, but man, this response on her part, though infuriating, also shows why I love her so much as a character.  She's hilarious and has so many layers.  There's something about her twisted sense of logic that never fails to crack me up and even impress me in its self-deceiving complexity.  First of all, she and Vincent broke up too long ago for this to have been break-up sex.  Secondly, she's already in a new relationship with Gabe, so even though they're not living together, she did pretty much cheat on him.  It's telling that Catherine doesn't even take her relationship with Gabe seriously enough to acknowledge the nature of her transgression...and reflective of the very truth she's skirting here: she was never committed to Gabe and she never let go of Vincent.

"I'm no fool, no, I'm not a follower
I don't take things as they come, if they bring me down
Life can be cruel, if you're a dreamer
I just wanna have some fun, don't tell me what can't be done"*

Vincent sought counsel with J.T., because seriously, who wouldn't?  The guy has the best advice and general wisdom bombs about life ever.  I feel that the humor and the sparkling warmth in the easy, sweet friendships in BatB have come really far this season. Some of the gentle, quietly funny little touches lately have involved poor Vincent trying to find something to eat, from his gummy worms and seemingly doomed frozen dinner attempt, to this week's confused granola bar experiment.  I also loved J.T.'s simple, too-true assessment that break-up sex is the opposite of what Vincent and Catherine had.

Sam broke out of prison, natch, so the gang had to crack down on that sitch despite the inevitability of its throwing them all back together in the midst of some serious personal angst shooting out in every direction.  For example, Gabe's disappointment in Cat's doubts about their relationship (finally she admitted it!  Despite his annoying attempts to guilt her about it) collided uncomfortably with Vincent's plans to interrogate a member of the secret conspiracy club targeted by Sam.  It was so incredibly refreshing to see all of Vincent's over-politeness towards Gabe and eggshell walking with Cat evaporate as he did things the beasty way and got results.  Though, of course, it's always fun to hear Gabe try and discuss legal ramifications as though any plotline in BatB is ever particularly hampered by the technicalities of the law.

J.T. and Tess got their own little subplot as they worked to track Sam down and ended up discussing their night together a few weeks back.  J.T.'s gruff attitude to Tess's demanding one showed that he was frustrated by her lack of communication about their connection, and the snips being traded between them were downright adorable.  Once J.T. finally confronted Tess about her issues, she gave a beautiful speech explaining that she never expected to be drawn to someone like him and it scares her, because whenever they aren't together, she's thinking about being with him.  True to his wise form, J.T. saw through her confusion and right to the important part: that her feelings for him are real.  The two then shared an awesome kiss.

"You know you like it but it drives you insane
You know you like it but it drives you insane
You know you like it but you're scared of the shame
What you want, what you gonna do?"*

As Sam's plans ramped up to the point of attempting a mass assassination of the conspiracy crew at a masquerade ball, the scene was also set for Vincent and Cat to return to one of their most romantic memories: last year's masked ball and their steamy kiss while also solving a mystery.  As Catherine noted the similarities, she was clearly unable to deal with the intensity of the romantic associations.  Catherine's asking Gabe and Vincent to each pick a number to decide who would be her "date" perfectly showed the ridiculousness that this would-be love triangle has reached.  As chortle-worthy as that moment was, clearly, an end to the madness was needed ASAP if anyone was planning to get anything actually done in the future.

The witty repartee and barbed flirtations between Vincent and Catherine at the party were fabulous.  I especially enjoyed Vincent murmuring "why is she so beautiful?" as Cat walked away after trying to reject him yet again.  It's so fantastic that her sassiness only draws him in more and increases the sparks between them, such as when he tried to help her out in an altercation with a baddie and got rebuffed.  Between Cat insisting on being an independent non-damsel, blah-blah-blah, and Vincent muttering about his ability to change, the laughs and fun, suspenseful moments continued to pile up.

As far as Gabe giving the "stay away from Catherine" speech again, sigh.  The writers need to get Gabe off the broken record he's been stuck on lately.  Surely he has more going on in his life, or should, than basically stalking Cat into being his girlfriend and undermining everything he did to help Vincent earlier this season.  I thought Gabe helped Vincent to make amends for his past actions and out of a respect that eventually developed between them, but everything Gabe's done in the last two episodes has shown an immature and spiteful disrespect for Vincent made even worse by the fact that he once tried to kill the man.  Gabe was enjoyable as either a man seeking redemption in earnest or a conflicted villain, but now he's sadly muddled somewhere in between.

"If you wanna train me, like an animal
Better keep your eye on my every move
There's no need to be so damn cruel
Baby you got nothing to prove"*

Sam actually became genuinely pitiable as he pondered suicide after his brutal attempt to exact revenge for his son's death went awry thanks to our heroes.  It was very interesting to learn that there was always a bigger organization behind Muirfield, one determined to make beasts for selfish reasons and in destructive ways.  Even a villain as conniving and violent as Sam, and even Muirfield itself, pale in comparison to the organization responsible for starting the chaos.  As Vincent tried to talk Sam off a ledge and then saved the man, showing that his beast powers could be used in a calm, measured, heroic way, Catherine was visibly moved by his thoughtful words and his ability to control his beast side while using it to help someone.  Clearly, Vincent has changed simply through growing as a person over his recent journey since getting his memories back.  But all of this "old Vincent, new Vincent" talk has started to get confusing!  I guess now we have a new, new Vincent.  And Cat really likes him.

The final glances between Catherine and Vincent when they were rejoined by Gabe to wrap up the case were priceless.  Her inability to deny what she really wanted was cannily reflected in Vincent's knowing gaze upon departing.  The break-up scene that followed between Catherine and Gabe was really well done. It had all of the emotions in a break-up that ring so true: the awkwardness, the hollowness, the bitterness.  It's hard not to hate Gabe for still trying to manipulate Cat right up until the last breath of their relationship, but he's just getting pathetic now.  Moreover, we can see that Catherine's too smart to let Gabe talk her into anything she doesn't want to do...she's the only one who can do that, and she's done with that hobby now as much as she's done with Gabe.

"You know you like it but it drives you insane
Only 'cause you know that you wanna feel the same
You know you like it but it drives you insane
What you want, what you gonna do?"*

Now that the hard work was over, Cat returned home and walked right into a special treat for nostalgic BatB fans (yeah, we can be nostalgic about 2012!): a certain open window and softly fluttering curtain that indicated Vincent's being up on the roof.  Yes, the roof, the ultimate VinCat date zone.  In a gorgeous scene amid softly falling snow, Vincent and Catherine reaffirmed their love to each other and kissed.

The morning after, the happy couple enjoyed a few fleeting moments of continued bliss before being rudely interrupted by the aforementioned cliffhanger.  Seems Vincent's been accused of murder, and I highly suspect it's Gabe who has engineered these charges.  If so, Gabe has definitely sunk to a whole new low.  Even though this episode ended on a note of trouble, the fact of Vincent and Catherine's love being stronger than ever seems to negate the severity of any new problem.  I can't wait until May, when we get to see what will happen next for Vincent, Catherine, Tess, and J.T.!

  6. Love your review and loved this episode. It was my favorite episode of the season and it did seem more like a season finale. As long as Vincat are back together and taking on their problems together I'm good.

  7. Loved your review Virginia as always! OMG, this episode was everything I hoped it would be and so much more. I too think Gabe had something to do with Vincent's arrest, especially because he told Catherine that he won't let Vincent hurt her. I really hope we get a season 3. Do you know exactly when in May batb will be back?

  9. Finally, evil Gabe is back! I was so bored with him, but for some reason I just really missed the bad Gabe. This episode was very satisfying in multiple aspects. I was most happy with the fact that we got strong kick-ass Cat back who doesn't let anyone boss her around! I was wondering where the heck she went!

Awesome review. You bring out the symbolic aspect which I always seem to miss.

  12. Thank Virginia. I love reading different perspectives on shows. It makes things really interesting and encompasses everyone's views by being different and what each person sees. I loved the beginning and end as well. I love the SO1 feel to this episode that I have been missing so much this season. It is a bit too bad that Cat didn't really get to evolve her character a bit more, but I agree the VinCat reunion was what was needed and wanted and it was a very romantic way to do it. I really liked the lighting the going from dark to light in their reunion as that is what this season has been about coming out of the darkness and into the light. I love you Stu Gillard for your consistency as you never disappoint me, and you didn't last year either. I am looking forward to May when we see the resolution of the arrest; and I have to agree it does look like Gabe is behind it all. He did a fair amount of setting the stage for that with "I won't let him hurt you!" much like Evan did in Season 1. Hopefully if it is Gabe, he will see the error of his ways and help them. Or it could come full circle and Gabe go back to being a beast rather than Vincent, and he also said that I know I was one, sooner or later he will hurt you-so that could be him too!

  16. What I loved the most about this episode is that the palpable emotions of all characters were back. My two biggest grievances with this season have been character assassinations and the fact that action took priority over emotions. So I was happy to see them being addressed here.

One very glaring thing I noticed in Cat this episode is how she is two different people when with Vincent and when with Gabe. She is more meek and soft and submissive with Gabe, probably trying to make him happy by listening to him to make up for her lack of feelings; while with Vincent she's a firecracker: daring, willing to take risks and step out of her comfort zone. This also bothers me a bit because I am left wondering how the real Catherine Chandler is. I the 'Who am I' arc, I can see where Vincent is but I am still lost on Cat. I guess I would go with the extremely lovable cliche that she is herself with Vincent. And despite her annoyance at him interrupting her kicking ass, which was silly but good to see how she is tired of people taking control from her, I think she realises and appreciates the fact that Vincent will always have her back, which is why she lets herself get reckless around him. She knows that he can right her wrong, a quality I noticed even in S1.
I think if it weren't for Vincent willing to follow her, she wouldn't have gathered the guts to go against Gabe and after Sam in that private elevator.
Cat knows where her heart lies, she is just afraid to follow it because of her fear of getting hurt. She was pretty blunt to Vincent about not being sure if his change will last. I don't know when or how she got convinced that the 'new' Vincent is here to stay (bets on the balcony scene), but I am glad that she got that trust back before she declared her love for him again.

I was a tad bit annoyed that these two barely got back together before Vincent got arrested but I understand that this cliffhanger was necessary to make viewers come back in summer.
I do hope Gabe isn't behind this, at least not to 'protect Cat from Vincent'. That is just too predictable and waste of a brilliant actor on a lousy character. It's too reminiscent of Evan, except his concern for Cat seemed to be coming from the right place.
Please, Gabe saw what a wreck she was when Vincent was missing for three months; and how it shattered her already broken heart when he came back having forgotten her and their entire love story. Don't tell me he doesn't realise that if he stabs Vincent, Catherine will be the one who will bleed to death.

  17. Yes, Virginia yet another awesome review to another awesome episode, boy did you nail it, through you I was able to relive something special, it had everything from humor to getting, the bad guy, an overload of sexy chemistry. And banter from Vincat, and my happy dance award #2 Gabe got the boot!!!!!! Great episode, along wait till we can see BATB, I'll be right here waitng, Thanks for your hard work & dedication to the Beastie nation:)

Nice connections between this episode and getting back to the fairy tale aspects of the show, which I definitely want too. And yeah, Gabe's definitely the 5th wheel. Even when his character was better written, he was always super-awkward :)

  19. Great review; who knew that Vincent was so funny - the conversation he had with JT re determining if they had break up sex was hysterical - when JT asked if it was good or bad, the look and tone of Vincent's "It was great" was hilarious and juxtaposed against Cat & Tess's heart to heart was very clever (like a she said, he said).

Then you finally see Cat admitting to Gabe that she's not certain about being over Vincent - his look was worth the wait to see it finally and then followed by the scene when they are interrogating the judge, Vincent kept giving his feedback that he was lying and Gabe (credit due) says "sidebar" and when Vincent beasts out and they flash to Gabe & Cat's reaction to the man's screams - I tell you I laughed a lot this episode. All Fab 4 were firing on all cylinders and even Gabe had his moments.

I agree that Cat didn't see herself as cheating as she never really loved Gabe, but rather found him supportive and safe and after the traumas of the past few months, and she thought being safe was what she needed and for 5 minutes it was. Cat is too strong to be the submissive woman she seemed to be with Gabe, but perhaps some are also correct in thinking she never cared enough to fight Gabe but with Vincent they're the Bickersons (which is also very funny and shows what chemistry they have on screen).

So great humour, chemistry, suspense, drama and finally the reunion we have all been waiting for - what a great twist at the end with his arrest - please it is so absolutely sore loser Gabe who issued the warrant and his twisted way of protecting Cat and having revenge on Vincent for "stealing" Cat.

I cannot imagine how he's going to get out of this jamb other than to go on the run - he did kill him and there were several witnesses - that is the only thing that creates doubt re Gabe as he was one of the witnesses and how does he get around that he was in fact an accessory by not reporting it, and so is the whole Scooby gang.

How will we get through the hiatus and keep the energy in campaigning for season 3

  20. "Stay away from Catherine"...I feel sorry about that they cut out Vincent's "Then what?" reply...it would have been +1 sparkling one liner for him :) Thanks for the review! Really enjoyed!

  21. I really love this episode....so far the best in season 2...it's a complete package. Love the funny side of VinCat....want more...more..

  22. Totally agree. I always thought Cat came across as submissive with Gabe because she was broken, tired of life and definitely half alive. This all translated into the lukewarm affection. Boggles the mind that Cat didn't seem to care less that she could not come and go as she pleased in Gabe's place. Juxtapose that relationship with the one she has with Vincent and you see how alive she is with him. She fights with him coz she cares and is invested. He completes her. A beautiful episode that had me in stitches.

Great review and great sense of humor too ;) I chuckled at some of your quips and where you placed those song lyrics.....very well done ;) Can't stand waiting till May. I know Gabe is the front runner for putting Vincent in jail - jealous much? but a part of me is wondering if it really is that easy ;) Guess we'll just have to wait to find out. If it was Gabe, I hope Catherine decks him good for it :D lol

  29. Love your review, best clarification of why Cat slept with Vincent on the houseboat. She wasn't committed to Gabe, didn't really take things seriously so in definition it was cheating but you made it easier to understand why she did it. The other little scene I loved was when Vincent & Catherine head into the board room and he looks at her almost for permission to beast out. Her uhh was so cute. Thank you for a great review!

  31. Thanks Virginia ~ your review is worthy of this fun fab ep. I haven't TRULY enjoyed an episode of BatB so much since Episode 4 Hothead ~ yup before Torible who is less so now in retrospect thanks to stupid Gabe whom I have hated since Reunion. Finally our VinCat's sweet reunion ♥ *sigh gush swoon* ♥ which is the only thing that makes this hiatus less agonizing and the trailer for the next episode is confirmation that BatB will be back...! But when?? Grrr.. anyway am so thankful to see the last of the gross Gabe and Cat arc at last! About time!!! After reading your recap and some of the comments below I begin to understand better what Cat thought she saw in Gabe. He was her faux security blanket and you guys are right that she couldn't even be bothered to fight with him. She was just just going through the motions of what she considered a "normal" relationship where she didn't have to worry about beasts.I still don't get why she told Vincent she couldn't go back to the past ~ if by that she meant the time frame of Season 1 where she was more than willing to be with Vincent ~ beast baggage and all~ why did it suddenly become such a burden to her in Season 2? In fact poor Vincent needed her even more because he was brainwashed. I guess that's just Cat's arc for Season 2 and I am happy to let it go now that she is back to being the "old" Cat that I love from Season 1 who would always stand by her man as evidenced in the coming episode's trailer where she says she doesn't want to lose him again! Still smiling from this episode ~ now we just need the good news of Season 3 ~ I can't get enough of this beautiful love story ~ everything crossed!

Thanks Virginia for the great review. I just love this show and each week I have been holding my breath. I also think that Gabe had something to do with Vincent's arrest, but I think that Cat's dad is playing a part also. The funny thing is that Gabe is not innocent in the Windsor death. The difference now that Gabe does not seem to get through his head is that Vincent and Catherine are stronger together, and since they have reconnected, they will be even stronger. Vincent is not the same beast that he was in season 1, he is stronger, plus he doesn't have to hide so that no one can see him, he is out in the open. I look forward to the rest of the season's show and I hope that the CW will wake up and smell the rose that Vincent gave Catherine and renew BATB for a 3rd season.

  34. What a wonderful recap for one of the best episodes ever. We will all miss this great show not being on our TV screens until Summer (that's what the CW said) what ever time frame that means.
I wish that that we would see this show get their season three. The cast, crew, writers, directors producers and the fans really deserve it.

  35. Lovely review Virginia...and as usual:) Most of us felt very uncomfortable with the Gabe and Cat relationship because it just made no sense. I believe there is a reason the writers put these two together and it will make more sense once all is revealed. It appears that Gabe may be working for Murfield, or a Murfield competitor and have bigger plans for The Beast, as in Vincent. He may be protective of Cat because he is aware of whatever plans are in store for Vincent that will take away his humanity and Cat will be in danger, or another theory is he may just need Cat for her family DNA. It's just hard to figure out if he is a good, bad or very bad guy but I don't think we got to meet the real Gabe yet. I have enjoyed season one one two and my only complaints had to do with the pairing of Cat and Gabe because made no sense and then dragging it out forever. Other than that thought the writers did a fine job, O and forgot, the lighting on most of the indoor scenes was way too dark.

Who killed his dad?? Still so many questions!! Jay, wow, as always, he can express so much without saying a word!! Amazing!!

  43. Thank you for another constructive and insightful review!!
It was an amazing episode with all the right ingredients. Absolutely loved it and did not want it to end.
Loved the humor and of course the romance, VinCat moments, breathtaking and so glad we finally had
JT & Tess moment too, plus some great JT & Vincent moments. It was the best episode so far in my eyes.
The only annoying thing was of course Gabe, but at least now Cat ended it with him, so we don't have to
endure Cat-Gabe relationship anymore, thank god. I am sure Gabe will now turn nasty and cause them
problems. I cannot see him walking away & leaving them in peace, but at least our VinCat are back at leas:)t!!!!
We missed them so much. No matter what comes their way, I know they will overcome it cos together they are solid
as a rock. I cannot wait to see what happens next. If only we didn't have this hiatus.... its going to be unbearable!!
    I miss #BATB already.

  44. I love your insight! Your review compared to Lilith's is extremely different! I really like it when an episode evokes different feelings in different critics! That just tells me that the episode was GREAT because not one too many people thought it was just 'average.'

I generally thought this episode had a S1 feel to it... it started with VINCAT and ended with VINCAT--something we haven't seen in a long time. However, I feel like the episodes that didn't start and end with VinCat were fragmented (not in a bad way). It didn't feel right to have the episodes not start and end in VINCAT, and I believe that strategy was brilliant! When Vincent & Catherine were separated, the show definitely did not feel at home (not necessarily a bad thing--just a different atmosphere that needed an acquired taste). Now that VINCAT are apparently back together, the episode was sewn together perfectly like their love for one another. (I hope I am making sense here).

Needless to say, I'm glad some critics actually loved "About Last Night." :) Thank you for the positive review! :) I'm going to follow you on Twitter now!! ^_^

  45. aaaaawwwwww…. reading your recap is just as great as watching the episode myself!! love the episode, love the recap. Tell me again why we shouldn't get S3 right?? I do have my own speculation though - that it's not Gabe behind Vincent's arrest, but that bigger organisation who's controlling Muirfield, now that they know they have a live one roaming the street of NYC

  48. from the spoilers, I would say if he isn't behind this one, he's definitely out to get revenge on Vincent any other way! and hopefully he'll get his ass kicked for that :)
