MOVIES: Red Notice - Review

11 Nov 2021

Red Notice takes a familiar story about reuniting Cleopatra’s jeweled eggs and turns it into a heist trifecta with a star-studded cast of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds.

Johnson plays FBI Special Agent John Hartley in the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. He is a lone wolf type that had previous run-ins with a criminal Nolan Booth, played by Ryan Reynolds, who is known as the best art thief in the world … or so he thinks. Gal Gadot has an iconic entrance when she interacts with the former two characters that I really enjoyed.

In an effort not to spoil, I should mention that there are some scenes, such as a funny therapy session, rock Jenga, and the second egg location that were truly great and some such as, the third egg location and the fight scenes, that felt like callbacks to the actors former roles in Wonder Woman and Jungle Book.

The film does have a couple surprise twists that left me thrown and scrambling to remember earlier scenes to put all the puzzle pieces together. There is also a surprise cameo from a musician that provides a hilarious outcome to jeweled egg heist which puts the movie and heist in perspective.

Red Notice premieres on Netflix on Friday, November 12th.

Some quotes to hold you over:

“Nobody knew Miley Cyrus was gonna be there. It a was completely unannounced show.”

“This is farm to table, right?”

“Kinda the land due process forgot.”

“No juice boxes for you.”

“As an added bonus, my friend here will give you a lifetime supply of prison.”

“I’ll send you both a sharpened toothbrush.”

“Resting failure face.”
