Shadowhunters - Lost Souls - Review + POLL

It took a while but Shadowhunters is finally back to finish it’s run. This week we saw everyone deal with Clary’s death, along with a totally unnecessary flashback montage. About 5 seconds later we find out that Clary survived, and so did Jonathan (who now has his old face back). Clary tries to run but almost dies from the cold and when she tries to kill him she realizes that they are bound. Anything that happens to him, happens to her. Meanwhile, Magnus is dealing with the loss of his powers. They babysit Madzie but have to fend off Iris who wants her back. Jace keeps throwing himself into danger because he feels guilty. Simon wants to get rid of his Mark because he’s worried he’ll hurt someone else. Luke shares his theory with Jace that Clary could still be alive, and while he sounds completely insane, he’s also absolutely right.

Guilty: There are many ways to handle losing someone you love and feeling guilty seems to be a standard on this show. I guess I should be glad Jace and Simon are blaming themselves and not each other (‘cause that would’ve gotten ugly) but they don’t seem to be dealing with it too well. Jace keeps throwing himself into danger as a way to punish himself (is anyone even surprised?), which of course his siblings aren’t too happy about. But it makes sense, especially since he still has all of the memories of what happened while possessed. He did a lot of bad things and he would’ve felt really guilty even if Clary hadn’t ‘died’. Simon, on the other hand, is hiding away out of fear that he may hurt someone. It makes sense that he’d want to get rid of the Mark. Sure, it’s a great defense from vampires who want to find a way to walk in the sun, but just look at the damage he did in that apartment. Clary could very well have died. Let’s hope it doesn’t take too long until they find out Clary is alive, we only have a limited of episodes left and I’d prefer it if half of them didn’t include these 2 punishing themselves.
No good options: Well, Clary has sure ended up in an impossible situation. She tried running, nearly died. She tried to kill Jonathan, nearly died. So her only real option is to go along with Jonathan’s plan. But I have no doubt she’ll keep resisting behind his back. I still have no idea why the writers decided to give this storyline to her and not Jace (like in the books). I’m assuming there will be some significance. Also, what’s everyone’s take on the new Jonathan. I’m not quite sold on him yet but it’s still early.

Who’s this imposter? Yeah, so I’m not a fan of what the writers have done with Jia Penhallow. Not one bit. I just recently read Queen of Air and Darkness and it’s completely throwing me off. Jia is supposed to be on the side of the good guys, not enabling illegal torture of Downworlders. Guys, what’s going on here? Is she possessed or something? And I’m surprised we haven’t seen more of her daughter Aline, who would have a lot of issues with her mother’s actions.

Fix it: I have to say, I’m not too happy with Magnus’ current storyline. I’ve never been a fan of storylines where characters lose their powers but in this case, I’m a bit worried the writers will make it permanent. I like seeing Magnus use his powers, it’s a part of who he is. I do hope he gets them back eventually, though it’ll be interesting to see him learn to fight. I wonder if this means his immortality is also gone because that would take away a big issue between Magnus and Alec.
Hopes and dreams: Now that we know the show is ending soon, I figured I’d sum up a few things I’d like to see before we say goodbye. For me, it’s mainly certain characters that I would love to see make an appearance, even if it’s just a glimpse. We’ve had a few mentions of Tessa but we haven’t actually gotten to see her (or Jem). We do see her in the final book, so I really hope they didn’t have to cut that out due to lack of time. The same goes for the Blackthorn family (who I’ve grown really attached to). I guess it’s probably unlikely that we’ll see them. It makes sense to cut them out since they could only do a double episode finale for book 6. But still.

Best quotes: Izzy: “I understand the kind of pain you’re in, Jace.” Jace: “No, you don’t. I’m sorry, you don’t.” Izzy: “You’re right. I’ve never loved anyone the way you love Clary. But promise me you’re not going to hurt yourself.” Jace: “I promise.”
Simon: “How do you know this guy actually exists?” Raphael: “Aren’t all the legends true?”
Maia: “So if no one’s ever seen this vampire, how do you know he’s not a myth like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster?” Simon: “What makes you think Bigfoot’s a myth?”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
