19:10 - MOVIES: Laura - Logan Team Working on X-Men Spinoff

The film is continuing to defy expectations. While Logan is the rare superhero project that doesn't exist to help set up a shared universe or sequels, a spinoff is brewing ("We're just working on a script," Mangold says of a film that would center on Dafne Keen's Laura). And it has emerged as a possible awards contender.

As Mangold looks to the future and a possible Laura movie, he touches on the success of Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman this summer and what that means for female-fronted films.

"Patty's success with that film only solidifies more for studios that there's less to fear with a female protagonist," says Mangold. "The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, 'Well, here we are with a female protagonist. That's incredible. And what are we going to do with her?' And that's where we are with that [the Laura script] right now, dreaming."

As Fox gears up to release three X-Men films next year, the studio has signaled interest in exploring the Marvel mutants through different film genres. April's New Mutants is being positioned as a horror film, for example, and a Laura spinoff could potentially branch out from the western-noir-tinged Logan.

MOVIES: Dora the Explorer - Live-Action Adaption in Development

Paramount is saying "Vámos!" to a big-screen version of Dora the Explorer, the popular Nickelodeon children’s series.

Nick Stoller, the writer-director behind films including The Muppets and Neighbors, has been brought on board to work on the script for the project, which will be produced by Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. It hails from Paramount's new Paramount Players division.

The move kick-starts a project that had been inactive for some time. In 2015, Paramount had been developing a movie with Tom Wheeler (Puss in Boots) writing and Mary Parent producing.

Details are being kept under wraps, but the live-action take is said to center on Dora, not as a 7-year-old like on the TV series but now a teenager who moves to the city live with her cousin Diego.

No release date has been set, but the studio is gung ho on Dora and is eying a 2019 bow.

03:20 - Netflix Plans to Release 80 Movies in 2018

Aiming for a level of output not seen since the two-reeler silent movie days, Netflix plans to put out a new original movie on average every four and a half days in 2018, for an eye-popping total of 80 releases, content chief Ted Sarandos said after today’s release of third-quarter earnings.

That level compares with eight in the quarter that ended September 30, Sarandos said. His brief comments came during a 40-minute video conversation between a single analysts and the company’s top executives, aimed at breaking down the quarterly results, which were highlighted by continued subscriber growth and higher net profits.

The films range from the typical “million-dollar Sundance hit,” he continued, “all the way up to something on a much bigger scale such as Bright at the end of this year or The Irishman, which is currently in production.” Bright stars Will Smith and Irishman Robert De Niro, the latest sign that A-list movie talent is giving Netflix a spin. One major question is the viability of traditional wide-release patterns given the wariness shown by many large exhibitors about booking titles that can be streamed at home day and date.

Sarandos cited the strong reviews for Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories, a festival favorite starring Dustin Hoffman and Adam Sandler whose Rotten Tomatoes score of 93% puts it in rare company in the original streaming movie game. Once the current slate rolls out, including The Irishman in early 2019, Sarandos said, “People will start seeing the potential for this big movie initiative.”
