Scene Of The Week - October 1, 2017 + POLL

1 Oct 2017

A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in past seven days on TV.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: CULT, "11/9", September 26, 2017, Actors: Evan Peters, Billy Eichner
The Scene: Kai convinces Harrison to kill his boss at the gym (picked by DarkUFO)

BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, "The Big House Pt. 1", September 26, 2017, Actors: Andy Samberg, Lou Diamond Phillips, Andre Braugher and more, The Scenes: The ending & Holt tries to cancel Rosa’s cable subscription
Laura:
The ending. Welcome back, fall TV. And that also means I need to give a hearty welcome back to the show of shows, B99. This week really laid on thick the drama and the severity of the situation in prison. Rosa had her own stuff to deal with, but Jake was clearly adjusting better than he was letting on. And when it came to the ending, when he struck deals on both sides (the warden AND Romero), it’s clear he’s in deep trouble. They both threaten him and everything looks horrible for our guy. Worst things worst, he gets to talk to Amy right after, who thinks something’s up. Jake’s response? “Everything’s fine. I’m talking to you.” Absolutely heartbreaking! We all know Andy Samberg is well versed in comedy, but he’s also a severely underrated dramatic actor. And this is precisely why I have nominated him for POTM this month. He knocked it out of the park, committing to the various slapsticky, comedic parts with ease, but also really delivering on the emotional, dramatic front. Can’t wait to see Part 2!
Milo: Holt tries to cancel Rosa’s cable subscription. What seemed like an easy task allowed for some great humour that really worked, as a simple scene like this became one of the more standout scenes of the episode, creating a laugh out loud moment that reminded me how great it was to have Brooklyn Nine-Nine back.

CRIMINAL MINDS, "Wheels Up", September 27, 2017, Actors: Paget Brewster and more, The Scene: “Wheels up” rallying cry
Samantha:
This was a really emotional premiere and I have missed this show so badly. Emily spent the majority of the episode being psychologically tortured by Scratch and given everything they know about him & the way he works, in theory he shouldn't have been able to get to Emily as much as he did. But he did & Emily was able to admit that, give the speech at Stephen's funeral, speak to his wife & then rally the team together. They have been through a lot over the past 13 years, but no matter which team members come in or leave, you can never doubt how much they love and respect each other. It's what got Emily through Scratch's torture & it's what will continue to get them through the most difficult of cases. That "wheels up" rallying cry was the perfect way to end this premiere.
Angela: It’s been a hard year for the BAU and the season premiere made it even tougher for them. And despite having been unit chief for nearly a full year, Emily Prentiss had her confidence in her own abilities tested big time once again this week. But this rallying cry at the end of the episode highlighted so many important aspects to the team dynamics, old and new. It showed the team’s continued trust and confidence in Prentiss and her leadership abilities, it allowed the newest team member, Matt Simmons, a chance to properly state he was all in on working with the team, and it signaled Reid’s official return to the team. Thirteen seasons in, these guys continue to prove they’ll always support each other through thick and thin, and this was a sweet and simple way to make that point.
Dahne: While the best thing that happened in the episode was the death of an overplayed criminal mastermind, the best scene was definitely at the end. This team has gone through so much. It was good to see them recognize that they need some time to process, but also that they are still very much a team. I love the new mantra.

GOTHAM, "The Fear Reaper", September 28, 2017, Actors: Jessica Lucas, Erin Richards, The Scene: Tabitha asks to take Barbara's hand as a gesture of good faith
Jaz:
Tabitha and Barbara meeting again was fueled with some rich conflict of emotions that went well beyond the predictable "revenge" route that Gotham is known to take. The love between these two is still evident despite all that has happened but all is not entirely forgiven. Jessica Lucas shone with her portrayal of Tabitha this episode. It was also cool to see a zen incarnation of Barbara this season. Despite her calm demeanor, I enjoyed seeing Barbara's emotions bubble up to the surface when faced with Tabitha's anger. Her fleeting moments of sadness, desperation and even nervousness was another interesting layer to those scenes. I'm excited to see more this season!

GREY'S ANATOMY, "Get Off on the Pain", September 28, 2017, Actors: Ellen Pompeo, Abigail Spencer
The Scene: Meredith tells Megan the truth
Luana:
I really like Megan (and Abigail Spencer's portrayal), I don't think she'll stick around, but I hope she comes back in the future to stay, after all, I don't see Grey's ending anytime soon. This moment, with both women having an open, honest conversation about the whole drama was certainly refreshing.

HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER, "I'm Going Away", September 28, 2017, Actors: Viola Davis, Aja Naomi King, Matt McGorry, Liza Weil and more, The Scenes: The dinner gathering & Ophelia and Annalise have a heart to heart & Michaela and Asher go into "Beast Mode"
Laura:
The dinner/letter reading scene. Oh, there was a lot in this episode worthy of my praise. I had my doubts about this premiere but they delivered everything I wanted, mostly. But I have to mention the dinner scene as my standout. First off, it was amazing to see that Connor was the nicest one out of everyone to Annalise, who he can’t stand. I know, I know, he finally got his way out and he was so happy about it, but compared to everyone else he handled the news very graciously. I’m surprised Laurel ran the heck out of there. Asher doesn’t surprise me, neither does Michaela. But what really killed me was when Annalise handed Bonnie a letter. Annalise could not even look her in the eye. She had to get up and walk away immediately. This is love, people. Agonizing, painful love. Oh man. And the scene with Viola’s voiceover reading everyone’s letters floored me. This is the show I fell in love with. I cannot wait to see what this season holds.
Justin: Ophelia and Annalise have a heart to heart. Stellar work by Viola Davis and Cicely Tyson.
Marko: Dinner scene. A slightly messy premiere peaked with an incredible scene forcing all the actors to deliver their best work. Aja and Liza delivered exceptional performances, their tears felt like bullets tearing my heart apart.
Angela: The dinner gathering. Bonnie’s heartbreaking reaction to Annalise handing her a letter, the students’ varied responses to Annalise’s shocking news about breaking up the group, the general tension and uncertainty and wondering “what happens now?”... This scene just perfectly highlighted all the aspects that make this show so juicy and intriguing. Also, everyone looked fantastic dressed up all fancy, so there’s that.
Jaz: Michaela and Asher go into "Beast Mode". God, Aja was phenomenal in this scene. If there was a moment that truly exemplified just how powerfully determined Michaela Pratt is, it'd be this scene. I felt truly empowered just from watching her.

LETHAL WEAPON, "El Gringo Loco", September 26, 2017, Actor: Clayne Crawford, The Scene: Riggs says goodbye to Miranda
Jennise:
One of the things that got me hooked on the show was the fact that Riggs’ crushing grief over the loss of his wife wasn’t glossed over and wiped away in the pilot. We spent the season watching moments where Riggs sometimes struggled to find a reason to function for another day. The season opens with him finding the man responsible for the deaths of his wife and child. He’s finally ready to move on, to live. He buries his wedding ring at Miranda’s grave. He tells Miranda about Murtaugh, that he won’t let him die, and that she’d love him. It was a lovely way to show the audience that we’ll see a healthier Riggs in the second season.

ME, MYSELF & I, "Pilot", September 25, 2017, Actors: Bobby Moynihan, Brian Unger, The Scene: Stepdad helps an underconfident Alex
Dahne:
Me, Myself and I did something nothing has done in the last few years for me - given me a new comedy to root for. While it made me laugh, I really enjoyed the heartwarming moments and two of the best came between Alex and his stepdad. I love how they showed this to be a supportive relationship, even in the beginning, instead of going a more stereotypical route. Originally I was going to highlight Alex’s stepdad making the Michael Jordan comparison to help Alex in a stressful situation, but in the end I chose an adult Alex coming to his stepdad because he feels lost in life. Just by reminding him of one of his first inventions, his stepdad gives Alex the confidence he needs to survive post-divorce life.

MODERN FAMILY, "Lake Life", September 27, 2017, Actors: Ed O'Neill, SofĂa Vergara, Eric Stonestreet and more, The Scenes: The sing-along at the end & Gloria and Cam on the boat
Klutzy girl:
The sing-along to "Total Eclipse of the Heart" at the end. It was random but such a sweet moment anyway. And Luke's confusion over whether it was an actual song makes me laugh.
Marine: Gloria and Cam on the boat, his clothes get stuck in the motor, he ends up naked and jumps in the lake - I laughed a lot at that scene.

OUTLANDER, "All Debts Paid", September 24, 2017, Actors: Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, David Berry and more, The Scenes: Lord John and Jamie discuss their losses and grief & Claire says goodbye to Frank
Darth Locke:
Over dinner, Lord John and Jamie discuss their losses and grief. It might be true that I am a bit biased where Lord John Grey is concerned, as he has become a favorite character after reading two of the Lord John spin-off novels, one taking place intermittently during Voyager and where Gabaldon has made the perfect juxtaposition to counteract the former Jonathan 'Black Jack' Randall. But I chose this scene because of David Berry's acting chops. For being introduced on screen as the older John Grey, he was able to convey the character so perfectly in just few scenes, by showing the right combination of good will, compassion, fairness, but yet strong and concise--a man who has the courage of his convictions, but also a lonely man, plagued by tragedy, that must hide that part of himself, since being gay, a sodomite, is a major crime for Briton at this time. Despite Jamie's disgust and reluctance, Grey still tries to connect and do right by the damned Jacobite.
Marine: Claire sits by Frank's dead body and tells him she did love him and he was her first love.

RAY DONOVAN, "If I Should Fall from Grace with God", September 24, 2017, Actors: Pooch Hall, Michael McGrady, The Scene: Daryll kills Frank
Darth Locke:
One of things that I really love about Ray Donovan is that although it features off-kilter kinds of fish out of water situations, like a Caucasian family of dysfunctional Irish criminals originally from Boston primarily living in flashy LA, it has then so absurdly & beautifully let the one African American character blood-related to the family, be the most level-headed and normal character on the series, despite that he too continues to descend in their ongoing messes. Killing Frank is going to have big consequences for Donovans, no doubt, but struggling with his race in the episode, ultimately to save his father, really the biggest dirtbag of the series, was not only complicated and smart move on the writers' part, but seems like an important turning point should Ray Donovan get another season.

SPEECHLESS, "W-e-We're B-a-Back!", September 27, 2017, Actors: Minnie Driver, Micah Fowler, The Scene: Maya's speech to JJ
Samantha:
I am so glad my second favorite family comedy is back! I've missed Speechless so much & the premiere didn't disappoint, with a number of scenes I could've picked but this stuck out for me. It was perfectly acted by Minnie Driver & Micah Fowler, and is a situation that really resonates with me. We've seen the struggle that the DiMeo's & in particular JJ has with wanting freedom but having limitations, and his family to an extent planning their life around him & coming back from summer camp to see his family has got their act together was a massive shock to JJ, who then started to feel as though they were better without him, and Maya's speech was brilliant and completely true.
Marko: Minnie Driver killed it. The tone of her voice, the insightful look on her face and the words written by show creator Scott Silveri were the perfect combination that left me once again speechless.

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, "The Vulcan Hello" & "Battle at the Binary Stars", September 24, 2017, Actors: Sonequa Martin-Green, Michelle Yeoh and more,The Scenes: Calling the Shenzhou & Michael escapes her cell
Milo:
Calling the Shenzhou. There were so many great moments in this premiere. I loved that opening scene though, with Michael and Philippa wondering around the desert on an alien planet, just before the storm hits, only to find out that rather than simply walking about in a circle, they’re creating a symbol – a symbol to call The USS Shenzhou. The Shenzhou appearing out of nowhere was great and a really inspiring moment that kickstarted Star Trek: Discovery, complete with the soundtrack choice and the ability to showcase some top-tier special effects.
Darth Locke: Michael Escapes Her Cell. Star Trek: Discovery has such an interesting mix of familiar things. It has a bit more action-heavy pizzazz like the blockbuster-ish Kelvinverse, but it also has an edgier and deeper philosophical tone that I would bet is Bryan Fuller's influence, despite walking away from the project before filming began, and yet it retained a hopeful persistent chord underneath it all, which showed in this scene. Michael, like a good Vulcan would, knew how to philosophize with the computer to allow it to believe she needed to escape, in order to live, as parts of the ship were being blasted apart all around her, but it was the Kirk-like determination and a passionate drive to take major risks, that showed the brilliance and first real heartbeat of the series and provides a character that is a wonderful combination of others.

TEEN WOLF, "The Wolves of War", September 24, 2017, Actors: Tyler Posey, Dylan O'Brien and more, The Scene: The final fight against Anuk-Ite
Justyna:
The very last episode of Teen Wolf was filled with a number of memorable moments. Whether it was a reunion between characters or individual chance to shine (like Sheriff or the Coach) it was heartwarming to watch and remember all the great scenes we've had with all of them over the years. But the moment that stood out for me the most was the final confrontation with Anuk-Ite. Though most of the pack has turned to stone, Scott remains strong and resists the power of the monster he has to face. In a brilliant twist the creature takes the form of the Nogitsune, the reminder of single best season (and villain) the show has ever done. It was a joy to see Dylan O'Brien and Aaron Hendry back with their fantastic performances and I was glad to get one last mention of Allison before the show is done. Tyler Posey also gets his chance to shine when he shows how much Scott has truly grown over the course of the series. He finds his strength even in his fear and proves to be a good leader of his pack. His choice to take away his own sight was brutal to watch but with Stiles showing up to execute their plan it's fitting to see these two end the fight and defeat the monster together. Though I definitely stand by my statement that season 6A finale would work as a much more emotional and well done ending for the series (especially considering the lack of Stiles and Scott for most of this episode), I'm happy we got a few familiar faces back and this one last reminder of the show's greatest work. Thank you to the entire cast & crew of Teen Wolf for the hundred episodes of the story. You'll be missed!

THE GOOD DOCTOR, "Burnt Food", September 25, 2017, Actors: Freddie Highmore, Dylan Kingwell and more, The Scenes: Shaun's speech to the hospital's board & Steve says he’s proud of Shaun & The final scene & Steve gives Shaun a present
Justyna: This show is already shaping up to be the best new series of the season. With a brilliant idea, the talented cast and great execution it's no wonder that so many people feel already invested in the story. Though there were many memorable scenes in the pilot (the flashbacks!) it's Shaun's speech and reveal what happened to his little brother that hit me the most. Right at the beginning we're introduced to the two young boys, one clearly struggling with his autism and the cruelty of the world (and people), and the other focused on taking care of his brother, supporting him and protecting from any harm. Shaun's little brother is clearly his rock in his early life and you can see how beautiful and special their relationship is. Steve is portrayed as one of the kindest and supportive kid I've ever seen, so the reveal that he died just as his story was only beginning was such a heartbreaking twist. "They should have had children of their own and loved those children and I want to make that possible for other people." Shaun's speech where he talks about his motivations and reason why he wants to become a surgeon is perfectly acted by Freddie Highmore and gives the viewers a chance to learn about and understand the show's main character a little better. His honest words and good heart are clearly seen here, and they make the board finally consider his true potential. It's a powerful beginning to the show and I already can't wait to see where the story goes. Kudos!
Laura: Steve says he’s proud of Shaun. By now I hope you all have read the review of the pilot episode done by me and Marko. And if you have, you know there was one constant theme throughout the pilot that I could not stop praising. It was the flashback scenes. Oh my lord, were they incredible, every single one. There was a lot of cruelty to some of them, mainly involving these boys’ parents, but there was a truly sweet moment when Steve says to Shaun, “Never forget: you’re the smart one. You can do anything.” This is what people who are feeling different, especially neurologically, need to hear! Shaun clearly had an amazing support system from his younger brother, which is already bucking the trend since older siblings seem to be the ones with the stability. But the acting and the dialogue in this scene really impressed me. These two child actors need more work immediately.
Justin: Shaun’s moving speech to the board as to why he wanted to become a surgeon.
Marko: The final scene. The Good Doctor was certainly the MVP of premiere week in my opinion and there were so many scenes that could've qualified for my SotW pick. Still, the final moments of the pilot were a true standout. When something is perfectly written, perfectly set up, with the perfect environment and perfect acting there isn't much more to say.
Angela: Shaun’s speech to the staff regarding why he wants to be a doctor. Such a touching example of what makes this line of work so important, and a great insight into Shaun’s kind, caring nature. And who didn’t want to immediately give him a TV when he mentioned wanting to make enough money to buy one of his own? Highmore has always been so brilliant at knowing how to bring out the poignancy and emotion in any scene he’s in, and finding the humanity in the moment. This scene was no exception.
Luana: Steve gives Shaun a present. Steve was easily my favorite character from this Pilot, and it's not for a lack of good characters, it was rather the opposite. But the way he championed his brother and protected him made it all the more heartbreaking when we learned his fate, I hope we get to see more of him.
Jaz: "The day the rain smelt like ice cream" scene.

THE GOOD PLACE, "Dance Dance Resolution", September 28, 2017, Actors: Kristen Bell, William Jackson Harper, Manny Jacinto, Ted Danson and more, The Scenes: The 802 attempts montage & Chidi and Eleanor confess they love each other
Justyna:
As much as I liked the show in season one I feel like it didn't reach its full potential until we learned of the big twist in the finale. Everything that the series has been doing since is absolutely brilliant and hilarious. I loved the entire montage with the 800 attempts of Michael's plan and would love to see more behind at least several of them. Everything we've got was perfectly done, though. From Janet's "not chill" response to Michael rebooting her every time, through all the different soulmates of Eleanor, to all the moments when she figured out the truth. With the exception of that one time that Jason did. Michael's response ("Jason figured it out? Jason?! This is a real low point… Yeah, this one hurts") had me laughing for a while and the actors did such an excellent job in all the scenarios they were thrown in. If things continue to be so entertaining I think this show might just become one of my favorite comedies. It's genuinely funny, heartfelt and clever. Quite a rare combination when it comes to all the shows I've watched. Kudos to cast & crew for all their ideas and the great work!
Klutzy girl: The reveal that Chidi and Eleanor keep finding each during every attempt (over eight hundred times!) and even confessed they loved each other! To me, this proves that they actually are soulmates and belong together. I'm so excited to see what happens between them after this.

THIS IS US, "A Father's Advice", September 26, 2017, Actors: Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore and more, The Scenes: The final reveal & Rebecca comes back for Jack
Klutzy girl: Mandy Moore absolutely knocked it out of the park in the scene where it's revealed that Jack (probably) died in a house fire. Everything in this scene hurt - Kate and Randall falling apart, an oblivious Kevin making out with Sophie, and Rebecca breaking down in the car. It hit me harder than I was expecting.
Samantha: It's pretty incredible for a show I don't even watch (my mum does) to get me in the feels, but boy, did this scene bring me to tears & it was even worse at the end. The way Rebecca kept telling Jack to get in the car, because he is her husband and his problems are her problems, it was just such a fantastic scene. On any other show this scene could've gone a number of different ways, and I doubt it would've brought out the same emotional response, because This Is Us really isn't like any other show. The writers know exactly when to be humorous, go hard & most importantly not overplay.
Justin: Rebecca meeting up with Jack and insisting he gets in the car so they can help treat his alcoholism together.
Marine: Jack admits he is an alcoholic and Rebecca tells him they will face that problem together, "Get in the car." Plus the moment we see the burnt-down house and figure out Jack probably died in the fire.

YOU'RE THE WORST, "Fog of War, Bro", September 27, 2017, Actors: Chris Geere, Aya Cash
The Scene: Gretchen's revenge
Luana:
Both Aya Cash and Chris Geere were awesome here as always, it was very bittersweet though, seeing Jimmy tell her to stay was sweet but we knew there was something odd, and he was oblivious as usual, the journey to forgiveness will be one tough ride.

YOUNG SHELDON, "Pilot", September 25, 2017, Actors: Iain Armitage, Lance Barber, The Scene: Sheldon holds his dad’s hand for the first time
Dahne:
Sheldon holds his dad’s hand for the first time to comfort him. Again, the new comedies really hit for me this week because of their heartwarming elements as much as the laughs. One of the biggest problems with TBBT is that Sheldon can sometimes be too much to take for 30 minutes. Therefore I was leery about a show focused specifically on him. In the end, I found Sheldon easier to take as a child and there were plenty of moments that had me rooting for him. One of the best was his dad explaining that telling the truth can sometimes come back to bite you and Sheldon’s attempt to comfort his dad by finally holding his hand.
