Interviews

The premiere features duel narrators for Adam as well as Jane. When and how did you come up with that idea?

That was a suggestion by one of my brilliant writers in the writers' room. We were trying to figure out how to introduce Adam so that he came in differently than somebody you had just introduced in the middle of a series. This way he came in with enough significance so that you knew right away that he was going to be impacting Jane's story. We're also exploring the theme in this episode about everyone's a hero in their own story. We've all been going along with Jane's narrative and then all of a sudden, she meets someone else who's at a different point in his own journey and what happens when two narrators collide? How do they change each other's stories was one of the themes that we wanted to explore. For all those reasons, once I heard the pitch, I immediately knew that that would be a good way to introduce him and give the premiere that sort of extra premiere feeling that one wants when they start a season.
Will we be seeing Rogelio’s baby this season?

Oh, yes. The baby, the co-parenting, his relationship with Darci. That is a big part of the first six episodes.

Off the bat, Jane’s mother and grandmother don’t seem too keen on Adam. How will that play out?

Xo is a little more neutral. She certainly didn’t want Jane to do something silly and run off and get married when she’s 18. She’s a little more open minded, but Alba [Ivonne Coll] doesn’t like him. That is going to be a complication. Rafael isn’t going to be crazy about him. They have very different vibes and attitudes. As you can see from the first episode, Rafael and Jane end up pretty estranged. Yet, he’s going to be living in their house. We haven’t really seen Jane and Rafael fighting and not getting along and not co-parenting particularly well since the time jump. This is going to explore a new layer of their relationship, and it’s going to be difficult to navigate that because he’s living at the Villanuevas for the foreseeable future until he can figure out his financial standing.

“Chapter Sixty-Six” — (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET) (Content Rating TBD) (HDTV)

TEAMWORK – Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) burgeoning relationship with Adam (guest star Tyler Posey) helps bring out her fun side and reminds her that she isn’t just a mom.  However, when Adam gets a job opportunity, he asks for Jane’s opinion on if he should stay or go.  Rogelio (Jaime Camil) is facing issues with his co-star at work and things are about to get even worse for him.  Xo (Andrea Navedo) is helping to take care of Darci (guest star Justina Machado) to prove that Rogelio is committed to being a father to the baby.  Meanwhile, Petra (Yael Grobglas) and Rafael (Justin Baldoni) are working together to try and buy back the hotel, but are running into trouble, causing tension between them.  Ivonne Coll also stars. Gina Lamar directed the episode written by Valentina Garza & Jessica O’Toole & Amy Rardin (#402).  Original airdate 10/20/2017.
