Scene Of The Week - May 7, 2017 + POLL

7 May 2017

A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in past seven days on TV.

AGENTS OF SHIELD, "Farewell, Cruel World!", May 2, 2017, Actors: Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Henry Simmons, Chloe Bennet and more, The Scenes: Mack chooses to stay in the Framework & Mack returns to Hope & Framework Fitz confronts Simmons
Justyna K:
It was such a brilliant episode. Again. And to be perfectly honest I couldn't quite decide between the three scenes I wanted to highlight the most from the hour: Coulson's leap of faith, Mack choosing to stay with Hope and Radcliffe saving Fitz. Each of these moments had a powerful impact, great performances by the show's incredible cast and emotional meaning I could focus on in the article. In the end, I re-watched all three scenes and decided to choose Mack's goodbye to Daisy. This heartbreaking part hit me more than I expected. While Fitz and Simmons, as well as Coulson and May continue to steal so many moments on the show, this one was certainly one of Mack's best. Him knowing that this world isn't real made his choice so much harder to watch. In the question of living between the real world and a dream, so often asked on many of my shows, he's the one couldn't let go of this alternate reality. It wasn't better in any way, he didn't even try to make a comparison, to think it through, he simply couldn't live in the world without his daughter. Because no matter what happened around them, he couldn't leave her behind. The Framework turned out to be far more real than anyone could have imagined. First for Mace and now for Mack. What they did in this world mattered to them, and Hope remains real to Mack, as much as it must hurt to know the truth. Henry Simmons and Chloe Bennet were absolutely wonderful in this scene. Kudos to the cast & crew for another fantastic episode. Can't believe we're almost at the end of the season.
Milo: This was such a powerful, emotional ending that really paid off. His speech comparing the team’s return to the real world like going back to Kansas was super effective, and was a really great moment for Henry Simmons to shine. Hopefully this isn’t the last we see of him and the others that remained in the alternate reality.
DJRiter: The Fitz and Simmons face off in the warehouse. With tears in her eyes, Jemma begs Fitz to remember, to come with them. She tells him she loves him and he tells her he loves Ophelia and shoots her. Elizabeth Henstridge and Ian De Caestecker... have both been killing it with this storyline and this scene was especially heartbreaking.

AMERICAN GODS, "The Bone Orchard", April 30, 2017, Actors: Ian McShane and more
The Scene: Opening Scene
Milo:
The opening with the Vikings discovering a mysterious new land was actually a really great scene. Visually stylish, it immediately set the tone for the show in delivering a dark, twisted opening that really paid off.

BABY DADDY, "You Cruise, You Lose", May 1, 2017, Actors: Derek Theler, Chelsea Kane and more
The Scene: Danny and Riley marry
Klutzy girl:
I honestly wasn't expecting this to happen until the finale so this was a pleasant surprise, and I love that she initiated this step.

BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, "Moo Moo", May 2, 2017, Actors: Terry Crews, Andre Braugher, The Scene: Terry and Holt’s talk on the couch
Laura:
We are living in the supposed golden, “peak TV” age, and that could not be more true with what I witnessed this week on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. This entire episode, from start to finish, was an absolute masterpiece. There’s no doubt in my mind that if the world was fair and true that these two actors, the writer, and this show, would be earning Emmys for this episode. (Then again, this episode probably wouldn’t need to exist if the world was fair, so there that is.) Anyway, so the meat of the episode lies within Holt’s house, when Terry needs to know why Holt refuses to file his complaint on Officer Maldack, who unjustly gave him a stop-and-frisk within walking distance of his own home. Holt is under the belief that you need to pick your battles carefully when being both black and a police officer. After all, that is exactly how Holt rose through the ranks and was able to make a wide spread difference in the precinct. Terry notes that it would be better to act now and suffer the risks (not getting the liaison position he signed up for) because Maldack is on the streets right now, and he doesn’t know that what he did was wrong, so he would have no qualms about doing it again. He believes that this was part of his job, and though the 99 would never do such a thing, this thing is commonplace in other precincts. Terry fears for his daughters too, and their futures. The best thing about this scene was the absolute raw energy between these two veteran actors. Andre Braugher knew his place, and though he is always fantastic, he knew to let Terry Crews take centre stage here. This was his moment. Though they are both black cops with the highest ranking jobs in the precinct, no one else there knows Terry’s struggle more than Holt. He was there for advice, though he was a bit biased in his thinking, but he meant no harm. He knew right away that what Maldack did was wrong, that was off the table immediately, but it was how exactly to approach the complaint which confused him. Ultimately, Terry decided to file it, and suffer the consequence of not receiving the position, and it was revealed later that Holt supported him 100%. Holt wanted him to wait because that’s exactly what Holt did in his career. Holt is in that place now, and Terry will get there one day. The ending left you with hope for the future - hope that people like Maldack can think twice before ever doing anything like that again. Thank you so much, B99, for tackling such an important issue, and having people like Terry and Andre to combat it head on. And thank you, Phil Jackson, for sharing your voice throughout this masterpiece of an episode.

DESIGNATED SURVIVOR, "Misalliance", May 3, 2017, Actors: Kiefer Sutherland, Virginia Madsen and more, The Scene: The President names the new Secretary of Education
DJRiter:
You have to love irony. Loved it when Kirkman and Hookstraten out-maneuver the house leaders who wanted Hookstraten out by the President naming her the new Secretary of Education. They have seriously underestimated what a formidable team Hookstraten and Kirkman make as do Virginia Madsen and Kiefer Sutherland. It’s going to be fun watching them moving forward.

ELEMENTARY, "Flying into a Rage, Make a Bad Landing", April 30, 2017, Actors: Jonny Lee Miller, Jon Michael Hill, The Scene: Bell talks to Sherlock about his childhood
Dahne:
I love how this relationship has strengthened over the years. Bell feels comfortable in sharing his past issues with an abusive dad to Sherlock while Sherlock feels comfortable enough to bring it up. This, coming after Sherlock beats up a suspect to keep Bell from doing it and ruining his career, show just how far they have come. Now to get more background on Bell.

FARGO, "The Law of Non-Contradiction", May 3, 2017, Actors: Thomas Mann, Fred Melamed, Carrie Coon and more, The Scenes: Thaddeus Mobley's final confrontation with Howard Zimmerman & Gloria Burgle gets "chatted up" by a police officer
Darth Locke:
This episode is one of those episodes that works better as a whole, then perhaps it does with any individual scene, but I really loved the guest stars and seeing Mobley's story get played out and escalating to such a harrowing conclusion, while witnessing how someone so creative and innocent can be pushed over the brink! Noah Hawley deserves a lot of credit too for adding such great juxtapositions to this season's story, last season's story, and using creative techniques similar to Legion with the very sad story of Minsky the Android in the fictional novel, The Planet Wyh all in one episode!
DarkUFO: Gloria Burgle gets "chatted up" by the local police officer at the bar.

iZOMBIE, "Spanking the Zombie", May 2, 2017, Actors: Rose McIver, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley, The Scenes: The ending scene & Liv & Major reminisce over their first kiss
Justyna K:
I had such an impossible time choosing just three scenes to highlight this week but if there's one I knew I couldn't miss in the article it's this ending of iZombie's last hour. After a beautiful exchange and reconciliation between Liv and Major there comes the time when he has to take the Zombie cure to stay alive. Despite knowing exactly what it means for them, Liv and Ravi are quietly saying goodbye to Major as he's preparing to lose all his memories. I remember that once on one of my shows there was a question "how does it feel to watch your life fade away"... And it's impossible to realize the magnitude of such loss. Who you are, who you know, who you care about and love, everything about you disappears and there's nothing you can do, nothing you can keep, just brace for the impact and the emptiness later on. So to knowingly say goodbye to yourself and the people you love, it's as powerful and emotional moment as you could imagine. There's so much heart, but also a bit of humor in the scene where Ravi injects Major with the cure and all three wait to see what's going to happen. I hope there's still a chance Major's memories won't go away but if they will, this scene couldn't have been any better. With a beautiful music in the background, great performances by Rose McIver, Rahul Kohli and Robert Buckley, it's already one of the show's most memorable scenes for me. Kudos to the entire cast & crew for their wonderful work here!
Laura: Once again, the ending scene packed such a punch that I have to give it all the praise. Even in an episode that played a song from my favourite band, it was the conclusion that stole my heart and refused to give it back. After a surprisingly emotional scene carried by Robert and Rose (Major and Liv must say goodbye to each other, spending one last night of passion and a walk down memory lane), it is time for Major to take the cure, memory loss and all. Part of me still believes Blaine has been lying this whole time and has had no memory loss whatsoever, but I digress. This scene was a bit more emotional for me because Ravi had to say goodbye to Major. It really punched me in the gut. To have Major there with Liv and Ravi as the last things he will probably remember, add to that his strained, “I’ll miss you guys”, and you have a beautiful scene. I wish Peyton could’ve been there too though. And I really hope he doesn’t actually lose his memory. This all feels too familiar for me *cough* CHUCK *cough*, but hopefully it’ll all end up okay. With the zombie vs. human war impending, the last thing I need are all these feelings.
Dahne: Major takes the zombie cure at the risk of losing all his memories. What I loved about this scene is how it encompasses all that iZombie is. It was heartfelt but still funny and showcased the close bond between this trio of friends. I am glad that both Ravi and Liv were with Major to give him support instead of him taking the cure on the job. Plus, the music was perfect. "Just Breathe" by Pearl Jam.
Samantha: Liv & Major reminisce over their first kiss.

LUCIFER, "Candy Morningstar", May 1, 2017, Actors: Tom Ellis, Lauren German and more, The Scene: The undercover therapy scene
Aimee:
They might have been undercover in this scene, but every word that was said was from the heart. Chloe was very invested in Lucifer and the bond they share before he took off on her. It’s made all the worse by the fact that he does indeed love her no matter how hard he tries to run from it. In his mind he’s able to justify leaving to protect her from being forced to be with him. But as far as she knows he just reverted back to the old Lucifer and ran off to marry some stripper. She was badly hurt by his actions and since she doesn’t know everything she has every right to be angry. Even if she had known the whole story, no one would have blamed her for being angry with him. He could have found another way to deal with things, but he’s Lucifer and he does the first thing that comes to mind without really thinking about the long term consequences. This scene was very raw and Chloe let out the things she had been trying to hold in. I think she drove home the point and Lucifer began to realize how badly he’d hurt her. Then she delivered a blow of her own as she questioned his honor by stating that she didn’t know if he’d always told her the truth. It was a tough thing for Lucifer to hear, but again, justified given what she knows. They are surely destined to come together eventually, but after all this it’s going to take a good bit of time for them to get back to where they were before he took off. Tom Ellis, as always was brilliant, but this was definitely Lauren German’s scene and she nailed it.

REIGN, "Dead of Night", May 5, 2017, Actors: Adelaide Kane, Will Kemp, The Scene: Mary shoots down Darnley's plea for Crown Matrimonial
Marko:
What a powerful scene! Adelaide knocked it out of the park. This season Reign peaked as their stories are so fast paced and exciting, but the writing for Adelaide's Mary and her brilliant performance is what is setting it apart from anything they've done before. The way Mary shut down Darnley was just emotionally gripping, the marriage as the marriage turned into another battlefront for her.

RIVERDALE, "Chapter Twelve: Anatomy of a Murder", May 4, 2017, Actors: Barclay Hope and more
The Scene: Jason Blossom's killer is revealed
Diana:
Jason Blossom's killer is revealed: his father!

SENSE8, "Obligate Mutualisms", May 5, 2017, Actors: Doona Bae and more
The Scene: Joong's people try to kill Sun in prison
Marko:
My heart really stopped for a minute there. It was early in the season and killing one of the cluster members would be an ideal opportunity to change the whole game. The whole scene was so intense and well executed that I could barely watch it. Phenomenal work.

SPEECHLESS, "P-r-Prom", May 3, 2017, Actors: Micah Fowler and more
The Scene: JJ encourages his new friend to dance
Marko:
JJ turns on his special prom chair and encourages his new friend to dance. The amount of compassion JJ showed in this scene was just heartbreaking. The writers are really doing an amazing job in showing so many sides of JJ and portraying him as such a complex and strong character.

SUPERGIRL, "Alex", May 1, 2017, Actors: Floriana Lima, Chyler Leigh, Melissa Benoist, David Harewood, The Scenes: Maggie refuses to say goodbye to Alex & Kara and J'onn on the balcony & Alex and Maggie Exchange “I Love You’s”
Samantha:
Maggie refuses to say goodbye to Alex.
DJRiter: While I'm sure others will choose the powerful Alex/Maggie "firsts" scene or the long awaited "I love you" scene, this simple, quiet scene between Melissa Benoist and David Harewood was equally impactful to me. Kara, standing alone on the balcony, closes her eyes, listening, desperately trying to hear something, anything, from her missing sister that would help her find Alex. J'onn comes up to join her, not as the head of the DEO but as another member of the family they've formed. I think it's only with him, that Kara can be so vulnerable to admit that as powerful as she is she'd never felt more powerless and she's afraid she's going to lose the person that is most important to her. "To us." J'onn reminds her and as he hugs her, shows his vulnerability as well in admitting he's scared of losing Alex too. They stand there, father and daughter, seeking comfort from one another.
Aimee: Alex and Maggie Exchange “I Love You’s”. This was an intense episode that was full force from the start to the finish. It was a high-stakes episode with Alex being the one everyone was desperate to save. It took some time, but eventually, Maggie and Kara figured out how to work together by combining both of their tactics to find and save her. In the end, Maggie and Alex were reunited and Maggie was not about to leave Alex’s side. So while Alex rested and recovered, Maggie was dutifully standing guard at her side. When Alex woke up it was time to finish the conversation they’d started earlier in the episode. They still have many firsts to share and many big moments to come, but they knocked one off the list by each telling the other they love them. It was the “I love you” scene that everyone has been wanting for this couple. This takes them to that next stage in their relationship and opens them up to many firsts. They also shared a soft kiss that was so full of love. It was nice to see how concerned Maggie was about Alex. She knows her girl is strong and stubborn, but she’s not invincible. When Alex tried to sit up, Maggie was genuinely worried and when they kissed she was very gentle in how she touched Alex. It’s nice that they showed Alex as this fierce survivor then showed this softer side to her. She’s a complex character with so many levels that make her very compelling to watch. It’ll be fun to watch some of those unfold on screen as it seems very evident that this couple isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The acting in this scene was so heartfelt and sincere. Floriana Lima and Chyler Leigh have done such exceptional work bringing to life this couple and giving them phenomenal depth. They are given the lines, but the way they portray those lines and the subtle gestures mixed with the way they have the characters lovingly look at each other really helps to give a nice steady evolution going for the couple. This was such an important scene paving the way for their future. A beautifully written and acted scene that was very highly anticipated and it did not disappoint.

THE 100, "Die All, Die Merrily", May 3, 2017, Actors: Marie Avgeropoulos, Bob Morley, Eliza Taylor and more, The Scenes: Octavia's choice & The final reveal
Justyna K:
This was such a powerful, intense and emotional rollercoaster of an episode. While I certainly expected this hour to be quite memorable given the promos I didn't think it would turn out to be such a true game-changer in the story and the ending chapter for three popular characters. Octavia's fight throughout the episode, as she watches everyone around her dying, is at the centre of the attention during this hour. Her actions and choices show just how strong and well developed character she's become. While the Sky People choose to act on their own, ultimately destroying what Octavia managed to build during the hour, her speech and the victory should not go unnoticed. This was Octavia's hour. As much as I enjoyed a couple of other scenes, especially Bellamy's conversation about his sister with Roan, what I wanted to highlight the most was Octavia's choice after she returns to the Clan leaders. Her admitting she ended up fighting for everyone and calling for the union of all the people into one Clan, just like Lincoln always wanted, was a true testament to the character and it could have been the act that had a power to bring peace to the constant struggles. I would still like to believe there's a chance for that, despite the final reveal, just like I'm hoping there's still a chance for Raven... Marie Avgeropoulos has been absolutely wonderful in her portrayal of Octavia Blake during the show's run but probably never better than in the current season. Octavia's slow breakdown as she's barely holding on to her old life, struggling with the warrior she's become, to this defining moment when she offers the clans the chance to survive together. And it was great to see the response she received, hope and support from everyone gathered and a strong embrace from her mentor, Indra. Whatever happens next, I was glad to see Octavia finding strength in herself and staying to fight for everyone, showing just what kind of person she truly is. Kudos!
Diana: In the final moment of the episode, Bellamy realizes he's been kidnapped by Jaha and Clarke's group; he's horrified because Clarke plans to go without other clans, leaving their friends and Octavia outside with the apocalypse arriving.

The "whoopie" sound Sheldon makes when he's having sex with Amy - while outside Raj, Penny and Leonard are unfortunately listening, lol.

THE LEFTOVERS, "Crazy Whitefella Thinking", April 30, 2017, Actors: Scott Glenn, Lindsay Duncan

Their relationship is one of my favorite aspects of the show, and all these little moments between them continue to kill me.

THE ORIGINALS, "High Water and a Devil's Daughter", May 5, 2017, Actors: Riley Voelkel, Christina Moses, The Scene: Freya and Keelin’s first kiss
Aimee:
This dynamic didn’t have the best start, but through the chaos both Freya and Keelin have come to care deeply for each other. It’s something that Freya isn’t at all familiar with. She’s a fierce witch that people fear so to have someone look at her with love instead of hate was something entirely new for her. She seems to understand the bad things she did to Keelin in the start and was truly apologetic for her actions. That alone is highly unusual for her to apologize and I think that urge caught her off guard. She was finally being open with someone outside of her family. That left her in a bit of a vulnerable spot and as a result, she was briefly killed and Keelin was attacked. By the time they got to this scene, Freya was just trying to distance herself from Keelin to protect them both. At least that’s how it seemed like she was trying to justify it. Throughout their time together, Keelin has gotten Freya to open up and embrace feelings that Freya was likely quite unfamiliar with prior to their meeting. In this scene, Freya regressed to who she was before they met. She was brash and straight forward with her walls firmly in place. She was doing everything in her power to anger Keelin in order to keep her away. Then, Keelin refused to be quiet and gave a passionate from the heart speech to the woman she was falling for, and by the time she was done there were no words. Freya tried, she really did, but Keelin had just demolished all of her protective walls with nothing more than honest words, and the strong and usually stone cold witch was reduced to silence. Freya is a smart woman, she knew that Keelin’s words were true, so she took a leap of faith. She found the only word she could speak, the name of the woman she was falling for and made her move. As Keelin was walking away, Freya took a quick beat to process her thoughts and she made her choice. With tears in her eyes and determination on her face, she strode up to Keelin and delivered a purposeful and intense kiss meant to convey everything that she couldn’t find the right words to say. After the first intensely powerful kiss, Freya pulled back and the two women said so much as they searched each other’s eyes for some sort of understanding of what was happening. Freya must have seen what she was looking for because the next kiss was soft and full of so many emotions. That second kiss showed Freya’s gentler side and solidified that Keelin was the one she was willing to be vulnerable for and with. Both Riley Voelkel and Christina Moses were exceptional in this scene. The line delivery by both of them was on point and the emotion they poured into that kiss was spot on. Riley Voelkel really nailed the moment with the tears that she allowed to fill Freya’s eyes. That stray tear on her cheek as the first kiss ended said way more than any words could have in that moment. Beautifully acted and a great testament to Charles Michael Davis who helped guide this scene in his directorial debut.
