04:20 - Scalped - Lily Gladstone to Star in WGN America’s DC Comics Pilot

Casting has officially begun on the project that was ordered to pilot nearly a year ago — Lily Gladstone has landed the first series regular role, Variety has learned exclusively.

Based on the western crime comics that were published by DC’s Vertigo imprint in 2007, “Scalped” is described as a modern-day crime story set in the world of a Native American reservation. The project explores power, loyalty, and spirituality in a community led by the ambitious Chief Lincoln Red Crow as he reckons with Dashiell Bad Horse, who has returned home after years away from the reservation.

Gladstone will play Carol Red Crow, the estranged daughter of Chief Red Crow. The former “Rez Princess,” tragic circumstances set her against her father and down a self-destructive spiral meant to punish him as much as herself. Fiercely independent and intelligent, Carol gradually comes to discover the influence she can play on the Rez’s future.

Insiders say that WGN America is looking to find a cast predominately made up of Native American actors for the pilot. Gladstone is Native American, and her great, great grandfather was Red Crow. She grew up in the reservations for the early part of her childhood.

22:40 - The Machine - Bridger Zadina, Malachi Kirby and Olly Rix Join Syfy's AI Pilot

Syfy's The Machine reboot is adding to its ensemble. Bridger Zadina (Better Things), Roots grad Malachi Kirby and Olly Rix (Of Kings and Prophets) have signed on for series regular roles, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Based on the 2013 film, The Machine is set in a world that is being transformed by the emergence of artificial intelligence and explores the epic conflict between man and technology through the lives and motivations of six interwoven characters — each of whom holds the key to humanity’s victory or its destruction.

Zadina will play Santiago, an agoraphobic young hacker who — after uncovering the dangerous truth behind those he believed to be his allies — is cast out into the world he desperately fears. Through his harrowing fight for survival, Santiago begins to emerge as one of humanity's last great hopes in the coming war against rising artificial intelligence.

Kirby is set to play Aaron, a lonely and out-of-place young man who created an A.I. as his best friend — benevolent, brilliant, supportive, and in many ways, his equal. Then recruited by the CIA for his creation, Aaron was placed in their cyber-warfare division. When the government used his work to spearhead a devastating cyberattack, Aaron was forced to destroy his creation and flee. Now in need of resources and money to rebuild, Aaron seeks a trustworthy partner that can fund the re-creation of his A.I. and save humanity, not destroy it.

Rix will portray James, the principal test subject of a secret Ministry of Defense Artificial Intelligence program. A soldier, his badly injured mind and body have been rebuilt using cutting-edge prosthetics and implanted artificial intelligence, elevating him far beyond the limits of normal human capabilities. As James becomes a pivotal player in the looming rise of artificial intelligence, how much humanity remains within him is still unclear. If James is a savior or destroyer is unclear, but the fate of our world may rest in his hands.

06:30 - Power Rangers - Dark Reboot in Development for TV

The showrunner on Netflix’s new Castlevania series, Adi Shankar, is working on an R-rated reboot of Power Rangers series from the ‘90s.

During an interview with Polygon, Shankar said his next big project was a Power Rangers meets Dragon Ball Z type series that would reimagine the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series that ran between 1993 and 1999. The show would be an animated series and Shankar said it would be the most violent version of the show to date.

“It’s a complete retelling of the first three seasons,” Shankar said. “And it’s going to be really fucking dark. Darker than any other Power Rangers series.”

Shankar is already working on the script for the first season and wants to launch the series within the next 18 months, but has yet to sell the series to a network. When asked if there were any potential suitors, Shankar said there were a couple of networks interested but he wanted to bring the show to Netflix. Shankar is currently working with the internet network on the recently announced Castlevania.

19:50 - Trollhunters - Renewed for a 2nd Season by Netflix

Trollhunters comes from Guillermo del Toro and marks both a first for the filmmaker — a bingeable creation for Netflix — and a return to form by way of a long-standing history with DreamWorks Animation, where Del Toro cut his teeth in the medium. EW can exclusively reveal that, following the successful run of the first 26 episodes, a second season of 13 episodes will arrive later this year, with production already long underway for season 2.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: It seems like you have some news to share.

GUILLERMO DEL TORO: Well, we got very good news about how many people were watching the series, but we got confirmation that the next [13] episodes are a go. We’ve been working on a second season for a while now because we knew that if everything went right, we could proceed. We’re going to go ahead and now continue, rather than start, because we’ve been doing it for more than a year. The reality and the beauty of this is that we can continue not only the storyline and the characters, but we have a huge swath of work from Anton that allows us to continue Anton through more than half the season.

How did you approach the show following the loss of Anton?

From the get-go, even in the first season, we knew we wanted to preserve as much of the performance of Anton as possible, both from an artistic and a human point of view, and also simply because I think it’s a tribute to what we think he brings to the role of Jim. From the beginning when we planned the writers’ room, we set out a map of 52 episodes, and created arcs that break every 13, and those were planned four years ago. So we have been recording Kelsey Grammer, Anton, Ron Perlman, Clancy Brown, everybody involved in the series for years and years. And there was a break in the arc in the right episode that allows us to preserve all the work that Anton did that was phenomenal. At the end of recording sessions, Anton did one of the most complex episodes and then he looked at the pilot, complete, and there was a great moment in which he was able to see the work and do a really complicated episode in which he did multiple voices and we were all so proud and so close when we lost him. And now I can tell you, we’re not only going to second season, but we’re going to be able to preserve a really large part of it with Anton’s voice.

04:10 - Castlevania - Given 2 Season Order at Netflix
Thanks to Julio for the heads up.

Part 1 of the Castlevania TV show’s first season will be arriving this year, indicating that similar to other Netflix series like The Crown, Castlevania has been automatically greenlit for at least two seasons (or a first season to be released in two separate chunks). The Belmont family will definitely be making their streaming debut later this year – although likely not in October, when Stranger Things season 2 arrives – and aiming to dominate in all of their vampire-slaying glory.

As noted by io9, the Castlevania TV series is most likely being developed by Adventure Time‘s Frederator Network (who teased his involvement near the end of 2016) and produced by Adi Shankar – known for his Power Rangers fan film that garnered a lot of attention in 2015. Shankar had previously written about his involvement on Castlevania along with Fred Seibert on Facebook with the timestamp “about a year ago”:

“Breaking News: I’m producing a super violent Castlevania mini-series with my homies Fred Seibert and Kevin Klonde. It’s going to be dark, satirical, and after a decade of propaganda it will flip the vampire sub-genre on its head.”

It will be interesting to see if this show focuses on characters featured in Castlevania video games past or a new generation of vampire hunters unique to the series.

04:10 - The Chi - Tiffany Boone & Alex R. Hibbert Join Showtime Drama

The Following alumna Tiffany Boone and Alex R. Hibbert (Moonlight) have been cast as series regulars opposite Jason Mitchell in Showtime’s hourlong drama The Chi, from Lena Waithe, Elwood Reid, Common, Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and Fox 21 TV Studios.

Although she struggles with his mother for acceptance as his girlfriend, she also is wise and helpful in navigating Brandon’s path. A restaurant manager herself, in tough times she works hard to keep Brandon away from street justice and on his own road to being a chef.

Hibbert portrays Kevin, who is street-smart and confident and focuses on the things important to a 13-year-old. He’s infatuated with a girl in his class, has a close group of neighborhood friends and dreams of getting out of the South Side. Unfortunately, being at the wrong place at the wrong time puts him at the scene of a murder, and now Kevin has a new kind of fear — for his life.
