Principal photography commenced today, February 2, in Bulgaria. Ferrante, who directed the first four films, is back to helm this latest installment, based on a script by Scotty Mullen.

The original 2013 SHARKNADO film, which introduced a cyclone depositing MAN-EATING sharks on the citizens of Los Angeles, became a worldwide phenomenon and spawned a pop culture franchise. In SHARKNADO 2: THE SECOND ONE, New York City was the target of the disaster, and in SHARKNADO 3: OH HELL NO!, a mega-sharknado made its way down the "Feast Coast" from Washington, D.C. to Florida. In the most recent installment, SHARKNADO: THE 4TH AWAKENS, the shark-infested storms went national. The film ended with the Eiffel Tower ripping away from Paris and crashing down on Niagara Falls - a chilling indication that no one in the world is safe!

23:30 - Law & Order: SVU - Season 18 - Roger Ailes-Inspired Episode in the Works

The long-running procedural is developing an episode inspired by ousted CEO Roger Ailes and the scandal that led to his exit last year, sources confirm to THR.

The episode is centered on the powerful head of a news network Howard Coyle with a past, a female anchor at the network who is carrying a dark secret, and a young up-and-coming anchor willing to do anything to get ahead.

NBC declined to comment. TVLine was the first to report the episode.

Longtime Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson famously sued Ailes and Fox News last year, claiming that she was fired after rejecting sexual advances from Ailes. As allegations from other females at the cable news network surfaced, Ailes eventually stepped from his post while Carlson won a huge settlement.

Multiple Ailes-inspired projects have popped up since, most notably a limited series from Blumhouse Productions, Tom McCarthy and Gabriel Sherman, one of the key journalists reporting on the Ailes scandal, as well as a scripted film from the writers behind The Big Short. Earlier this week, THR broke that a docu about Ailes is in the works from Going Clear filmmaker Alex Gibney.

02:50 - Roadside Picnic - Pilot Not Going Forward at WGN America, Being Shopped Elsewhere

WGN America has opted not to proceed with Roadside Picnic, its drama pilot based on the famous novel by top Soviet/Russian science fiction writers Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. I hear the pilot’s producing studio, Sony Pictures TV, already is shopping it to other outlets.

Starring The Good Wife and Downton Abbey alum Matthew Goode, alien saga Roadside Picnic explores a near-future world where aliens have come and gone, leaving humankind to explore the wondrous and dangerous mysteries left behind. The story also explores the social ramifications of their visit, as seen through the eyes of Red (Goode), a veteran “stalker” who has made it his mission to illegally venture into the once-inhabited zone and scavenge the abandoned remains of the alien culture.

The Roadside Picnic pilot was written by Transcendence scribe Jack Paglen and directed by Alan Taylor. Neal Moritz is producing. It is one of two pilots ordered by WGN America last year. The other, Scalped, based on the DC comic, is in pre-production.

Jacob Latimore (Collateral Beauty) and Yolonda Ross (Treme, The Get Down) have been case as series regulars for Showtime’s hourlong drama The Chi, from Lena Waithe, Elwood Reid, Common, Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and Fox 21 TV Studios.

Created/executive produced by Waithe, executive produced/showrun by Reid and executive produced by Common and Kaplan, The Chi is a coming-of-age story that follows a half dozen interrelated characters in the South Side of Chicago.

The recent series pickup of the project was made based on a new pilot script and backup scripts written by a small writers room. As part of the drama’s redevelopment, it is being fully recast, with Rick Famuyiwa set to direct the new opening episode.

Ross will play Jada, a full-time nurse/caregiver and single mother to her reckless, but charming son Emmett, played by Latimore. 06:30 - Highston - Sacha Baron Cohen Comedy Series Scrapped at Amazon
Thanks to johnhelvete for the heads up.

Amazon is no longer moving forward with comedy series Highston.

More than a year after it handed out a six-episode series order to the comedy exec produced by Borat's Sacha Baron Cohen, the streaming service has abandoned the project, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Written by Bob Nelson (Nebraska) and directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine), family comedy Highston centered around 19-year-old Highston Liggetts (Lewis Pullman), who has a number of celebrity friends that only he can see. His parents, played by Mary Lynn Rajskub and Chris Parnell, force him to get psychiatric help, but his uncle Billy (Curtis Armstrong) thinks he's fine. Shaquille O'Neal and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea guest starred in the series that also counted Todd Hoffman (Love Stinks) and Todd Schulman (Bruno) as exec producers.

“We love Bob, Jon and Val, both producers named Todd and the incredibly talented cast," said Joe Lewis, head of comedy and drama development at Amazon Studios. “Unfortunately not every series works out.”

Thanks to FootballfanbutNeutral for the heads up.

Stephen Colbert will host the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, CBS and the Television Academy today announced today. It will be the The Late Show host’s first time hosting this awards ceremony.

That trophy show will be broadcast on Sunday, September 17, and it’s CBS’s turn to host, obviously. Anticipating your next question, it is unusually early to be making this announcement – and comes in marked contrast to the Movie Academy’s unusually late announcement that ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel would be host this year’s Oscars.
