Wynonna Earp - Keep the Home Fires Burning - Review

'Keep the Home Fires Burning' is a strong follow up to the premiere. We are already two episodes in and the chemistry between Dolls and Earp is really on point, largely in part to actress Scrofano. Her facial expressions and one liners are absolutely priceless and it plays well off Anderson's straight-man role as Agent Dolls.

Another positive aspect built upon in this episode are our antagonists, The Revenants, who's leader Bobo we are introduced to. He is a menacing, take no B.S. type of character who all of the redneck vampires practically worship. In 'Keep the Home Fires Burning' he sends out Jim Miller, a "Shadow Assassin" summoned by blood to do his bidding against Wynonna. However, through some mishap Doc Holliday sends the demon to Waverly.

The shadow assassin, who sucks up all energy around him to engulf his victims in darkness, provided quite the intimidating foe for this week and he seemed largely unbeatable, until Wynonna offed him fairly quickly with a couple shots from The Peacemaker.

In terms of our long-term villain, Bobo, who Waverly reveals was once her imaginary friend, he is an exceptionally charismatic leader of the Revenants. The episode ends with a very spine tingling scene where Bobo has Doc prove his loyalty by dragging Levi, the cowardly revenant, outside the circle of their territory, leaving him burning and screaming in agony. Bobo then delivers a rousing Braveheart-esque speech about finding their freedom and letting "the seven" deal with Wynonna Earp. This foe has quite the menacing screen presence, and it'll be fun seeing him go head to head with Wynonna down the road.

The interactions between our protagonists in 'Keep the Home Fires Burning' had its ups and down. Waverly in this episode was a bit irritating as she was over hamming some of her scenes. In small doses she is humorous and her energy, as written in my last review, can be quite infectious. However, too much of it can be overpowering as it was in this episode, especially in her scene with Doc Holliday. In what was her first interaction with the mysterious cowboy, she completely overacted how awkward she is and it just didn't come off as natural.

Speaking of Waverly, we saw the introduction of new character, Officer Nicole Haught (hot). Her first scene teases a possible future relationship with the younger Earp sister - the officer telling Waverly how relationships with boys "are the worst" in an awkward conversation.

My reaction to this character was soon mirrored later in the episode by Agent Dolls who rudely tells Haught to get out of his office. Seriously though, this early in season one let's focus on building the mythology and the relationship between the sisters, as well as the two leads, Dolls and Earp. The mysterious Doc Holliday is a great side character, but the addition of more characters feels unnecessary. We'll see how she develops and how they integrate her into the story as the season progresses, but right she did not leave a good first impression.

Overall, Wynonna Earp has quickly established itself as solid entertainment. Syfy has truly been pulling out all the stops with their programming recently and after two episodes this western, supernatural show is shaping up to be another success on their list.

8/10
