Shadowhunters - This World Inverted - Review

This week Clary and Jace traveled through an alternate dimension to find a portal that would lead them to Valentine. Simon helped Luke get rid of the suspicion surrounding him by attacking the guy who’s investigating him. Izzy is arrested for her role in helping Meliorn go free. Alec tries to save her by turning in the Mortal Cup but Jace and Clary have already stolen it leaving Lydia no choice but to go ahead with Izzy’s trial. After a lot of weirdness in the alternate reality, Clary and Jace make it through the portal and find Jace’s dad instead of Valentine.

Favorite relationship: The Lightwoods knocked it out of the park again this week. Even though they’re kind of on opposite sides, they’re still trying to look out for each other. Alec’s first reaction to finding out Izzy was a part of the group that freed Meliorn wasn’t anger but whether or not anyone could link her to it. He even risked sacrificing his parabatai bond with Jace to save her from having to go through a trial. Who even knows what side effects that could’ve caused for him. Frankly, I’m sick of seeing the Lightwood siblings suffer for other people’s mistakes. Yes, Izzy is responsible for her own actions and for what she did to free Meliorn. But would they have even been in this situation if it hadn’t been for Clary and Jace’s recklessness. Or even their parents mistakes when they were a part of the Circle. Alec and Izzy seem to be the only ones who have to face the consequences of their actions when everyone else gets away with it.
Freakiest moment: So the alternate reality gave us a lot of moments that raised some eyebrows (for me anyway) but I think we can all agree that no matter what reality we’re in, we never wanted one where Izzy has a crush on Valentine. Yikes!

Funniest moment: I guess it makes sense that Jace not having been raised as a shadowhunter would be a lot softer than the one we’re used to. But I still laughed so hard when the alternate reality of him had a full blown panic attack when faced with a demon. Magnus’ commercial came in a close second though.

Most adorable dork: Emeraude rocked as a nerdy Izzy. I loved seeing this version of her, it was my favorite part of the alternate reality. It’s a side of her we haven’t really seen but must be there deep down because it’s unlikely that their alternate selves would be completely different. We all know Izzy is smart enough, she probably the smartest out of her, Jace and Alec.

Favorite character: I guess I was mistaken last week when I said we probably wouldn’t be seeing much of Simon for the next few episodes. I’m glad they found a way to keep him in the storylines without it seeming like they’re just trying to squeeze him in somewhere. I very much enjoyed his scenes with Luke. I think most of us forget that since he and Clary have grown up together and Luke has been around practically her entire childhood, Simon and Luke are bound to have bonded over the years. We saw a glimpse of this in the pilot but haven’t seen much of it after that. Thanks to Simon’s new found vampire status they also have a lot in common. They were both turned into a downworlder against their will and had to learn how to deal with it. I did enjoy seeing Simon’s serial killer side, and I love how quickly he went from scary to absolutely adorable when they got him back to the morgue.

Biggest twist: So Michael Wayland is alive. Color me absolutely confused. I’m curious to see what the writers are planning because I have no idea where they are going with this. I do have one theory that it is Valentine somehow magically disguised as Michael. Honestly that is the only thing that would make sense to me. Since we’re nearing the end of the season, I guess we’ll know soon enough.
Honorable mention: As much as I had hoped to see Chairman Meow and most importantly Church as a regular aspect on this show, I’m glad they at least got a cameo this week. Even if it was in an alternate reality. Church was exactly how I imagined him. Even in a world where shadowhunters don't exist, he still hates everyone but his Jem.

Best quotes: Meliorn: “I see Isabelle is the smart one in the family.”
Izzy: “But then we have to fix you and Jace because the two of you not talking really messes with my chi.”
Alaric: “You saved our alpha. The pack’s indebted to you.” Simon: “So I’m thinking Mu Shu pork for life?”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
