Blood & Oil - The Birthday Party / Rocks and Hard Places - Double Review

For the last couple of weeks Blood & Oil has been bringing more of the sexy and dramatic vibe that I was expecting. However, it still isn’t enough and unfortunately it’s too late.

The problem with this show is that, typically, not much really happens in each episode (Rocks and Hard Places being a notable exception). It feels like there are a lot of minor story lines and the one major storyline, the oil heist/murder investigation, is running out of steam. I’m surprised it has even gone on this long. Wick isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed and neither is his partner, so I’m surprised they’ve been able get away with it for this long. Now that Wick has gone to the police and Hap knows that the sheriff suspects Wick is involved, this can’t go on for much longer. I think we can all see where this is going, which is probably why I’m not that invested and the stakes don’t feel very high.

The one thing I do love about this show is the chemistry between the couples. When Blood & Oil first started, I thought that Billy and Cody carried the show with their chemistry, but now that we’re a few episodes in, the other pairings have really stepped up. Wick and Jules are very cute together and I like the side that she brings out in him. I think she makes him a better person and I wish that he could be like that all the time. However, I really don’t like that Jules is cheating on him with Hap. I almost like Wick more than Jules because of this. He gave a really adorable and heartfelt speech at her birthday party and I just want her to dump Hap permanently and be with Wick. I also really loved AJ and Lacey. Of course, now that his involvement in corporate espionage and a competing oil company has been revealed, I’m not sure how many more steamy scenes we’ll see between them.

As much as I’m enjoying the other couples on this show, I still really, really, really love Billy and Cody. They are still, by far, my favorite couple on this show and possibly one of my favorite couples ever. Their interactions just feel so natural and I’m actually upset that their relationship has been wasted on this show. I was a bit worried when Finn showed up but now that he’s out of the way and ruining Ada and Kess’ relationship, it seems like Billy and Cody will be okay on that front. I’m still kind of worried about Emma making a move on Billy, however, infidelity is the least of their problems right now. At the end of last week’s episode we saw Gary, Wick’s partner in crime, robbing the pharmacy while Cody was working. When she pushed the silent alarm button he attacked her and it looks really bad. Thankfully, Billy was already on his way to her so he got to her quickly. I was wondering why the pregnancy was introduced so quickly and now it seems like I have my answer. There’s a very good chance that the attack could have hurt the baby as well, so it makes the attack even more terrible and high stakes because it’s not only Cody’s life on the line.

I really enjoyed last week’s episode, Rocks and Hard Places. Everything has been kind of slow and boring up to this point but with the attack at the pharmacy things are looking exciting again. Honestly, that’s one of the only storylines I care about. However, everything seems to be heating up as of last week. There’s been some progress with the investigation, Cody and Billy learned about Hap and Jules’ relationship, and obviously Cody is in a difficult situation fighting for her life. The episode was dramatic and sexy in all the right ways and I really hope that the rest of the season continues this way. This show has been a disappointment from the start so the least it could do is finish strong.

What did you think of these episodes? Let me know in the comments and thanks for reading!
