The Muppets - Hostile Makeover - Review: "Still not sold on this new version"

The Muppets is back on a weekly basis. Is their fierceness back as well? I am still not sure. Last week I explained why I liked, but I didn’t love the pilot of this new versions of the show. The second episode is called Hostile Makeover and it still suffers of the same problems.

This week’s episode focuses on the new flame of Miss Piggy: Josh Groban. Hoping to improve her mood, Kermit sets a romantic musical moment between these two, and it ends up in the best possible way. But at the end of the episode we find out that Josh himself has ideas for the show. I really loved the ending and how Kermit knew how to get rid of Groban. Fozzie is invited to a party at Jay’s Leno house and he rediscovers a dangerous kleptomania. Laurence Fishburne is another guest star of the episode and his moments are hilarious.

I really like this attempt of rebranding and modernize these characters, but I am still not sure that it’s enough. You can sell a product as a brand, there must be something else in it. The Muppets has always been a safe heaven for television and Cinema, but the writers must find a way to give the show a more definite and unique direction. Jim Henson has created a spectacular universe back in the day, but it can’t stand on his own perpetually. As a matter of fact I wasn’t surprised by the consistent ratings’ drop of the second episode. People love The Muppets, but lately viewers are in search of something more than the usual sit-com. It is still an entertaining and kind of funny show, but it lacks of something.

With all these great guest-stars, I am really waiting to discover who will show up next. Who are you waiting for?

What do you think of Hostile Makeover?
