-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS finished first in the Tuesday overnights, besting No. 2 NBC by 14 percent in households. But the home of “The Voice” will have no trouble winning the evening in adults 18-49 (and all the key young adult demos). “The Voice,” in fact, built by nine percent from one week earlier, with an 8.8 rating/14 share in households. And that gave week three of lead-out “Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris” a minor boost as well, with a 4.0/ 7 at 10 p.m. up by five percent from the 3.8/ 7 in the overnights last week. Comparably, that resulted in 5.91 million viewers and a 2.1 rating/7 share for Neil Patrick Harris based on the Live + Same data (out of 12.35 million viewers and a 3.5/12 in the demo for “The Voice”).
“NCIS” on CBS topped the night in the overnights, as always, with a 10.4/17 at 8 p.m. And that led into an 8.0/13 (#2) for “NCIS: New Orleans” at 9 p.m., followed by week two of drama “Limitless” at a dominant 6.3/11 at 10 p.m. Comparably, “Limitless” dropped by only six percent from its 6.7/12 series-opener last week (which resulted in 9.86 million viewers and a 1.9/ 6 in adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same day data). Anticipate a respectable second-place time period finish in the demo for “Limitless.”
In series-premiere news, there was respectable sampling for Fox sitcoms “Grandfathered” (#4: 4.0/ 6) and “The Grinder” (#3: 3.8/ 6) in the 8 p.m. hour. The two, on average, were 22 percent above the series-debut of “Scream Queens” in the time period last week (3.2/ 5 on Sept/ 22). And the pair outdelivered year-ago colossal flip “Utopia” (1.7/ 3 on 9/30/14) by a considerable 129 percent. Let’s wait and see what the demos look like.
In week two (and episode three) news, Fox’s aforementioned “Scream Queens” dipped to a 2.5/ 4 in the household overnights at 9 p.m. (#4), which was one-tenth of a rating point (or four percent) below the 2.6/ 4 in the hour last week. While the two initial episodes of “Scream Queens” averaged a sluggish 4.04 million viewers and a 1.7/ 6 in adults 18-49 initially, ratings rose to 7.3 million viewers based on the Live + 3 Day data, and there was significant interest in social media. That said, “Scream Queens” is a prime example of how the definition of a “hit” or a “miss” has changed. Based on the initial Twitter usage, this was a winner.
Also in week two news was ABC sitcom “The Muppets,” which dipped by a significant 28 percent with a 4.2/ 7 in the overnights at 8 p.m. (versus a 5.8/10 one week earlier). Comparably, however, this was still 14 percent above short-lived “Selfie” last year (3.7/ 6 on 9/30/14), but a definite disappointment nonetheless. With weaker lead-in support, sophomore “Fresh Off the Boat” slipped to a 3.3/ 5 at 8:30 p.m., which trailed the debut of competing “The Grinder” on Fox by 13 percent. And it led into the third season premiere of “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” at a third-place 3.4/ 5 from 9-10 p.m., which could still ultimately crack a 2-rating in adults 18-49. Stay tuned.
An encore telecast of the pilot episode of Sunday drama “Quantico” capped off the night for ABC with a 3.1/ 6 in the overnights at 10 p.m.
Last, and very least was part one of the “The iHeartRadio Music Festival” at a non-competitive 0.6/ 1 from 8-10 p.m., which was one-tenth of a rating point (or 14 percent) from the 0.7/ 1 one year earlier.
